The documentation states "Contains 10 PVC-free sleeves (20 pages). Holds 4" x 6" photos." What we received will only accept 3.5 x 5 in. prints.

Since first posting this review, I have received an apology about the problem, and given a refund for the item.

My 5 year old son enjoys having this book read to him, especially when he pulls the letters out of the envelopes. He enjoys the characters and illustrations and the story itself. I received this book as a gift for my son, but it must have been opened in the store previously. As a result, one of the letters is missing! On the page where Mr. Jeremy Fisher (the frog) is described, there are 2 envelopes. I have the letter that reads as follows:

Mr. Jeremy Fisher Pond House

Mr. Alderman Ptolemy Tortoise

Requests the pleasure of

Mr. Jeremy Fisher's

Company at Dinner

(there will be a snail)

R.S.V.P.

I am looking for the other letter for Jeremy Fisher. Can anybody help me? I can't find the book anywhere, and I am not going to buy another copy just for one letter. Can somebody respond with the text and describe the picture on the letter that I need. I will recreate it on my computer. Thank you very much.

I am not returning this book as it is innovative in it's artistic approach, but these letters were not sent to children. They are letters, very brief ones, that are between characters and are just unintersting. "Dear Mr Owl" I recal one saying, "Please bring back my tail." and it is signed Squirel Nutkin. Maybe I am missing something, but I cannot fathom why the author would send these to her readers. I had anticipated letters that would illuminate her writings!

I was very disappointed with the audio quality of this cd and that a read along book did not come with the cd. I gave it as a gift to my grandson and just recently had the opportunity to listen to it.
I purchased it because I had bought a cd/book combo of another Potter story in Borders that I was extremely pleased with. I will request a refund of this purchase.

Beatrix Potter's best stories comes to life!

I love these stories because they are extremely soothing to listen to and also extremely exciting, especially in the story "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" where Peter has to escape from Mr. McGregor's garden. I also love Lyle Mays' music as he gives "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" a jazzy feel to the story. Meryl Streep's narration is extremely soothing as she narrates all three stories, which are "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," "The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher," and "The Tailor of Gloucester." Also, in "The Tailor of Gloucester," the Chieftains performs magnificently as they portray an ancient times rhythm to the story.

A Few Thousand Well-Chosen Words

Review Date: 2007-09-16
A French cousin recommended this book for summer reading due to its detailed descriptions of the area of France we both prefer.
It is colorful and an interesting view of the landscape and population of the salt marsh country near St Lazaire where your best sea salt is gathered but the story drags and describes people who seem to spend their time doing nothing of any significance. It is a common failing of 19th century novels in all western countries, I think. They flirt, they picnic, and they talk, talk, talk. The world is changing all around them and their gentile aristocratic culture is marching steadfastly towards a merciful extinction of which they are blissfully unaware. Makes me wonder where we are marching.
I suspect I should read it in French to appreciate his style but the subject is not terribly enlightening. I kept thinking, "Wake Up, People"!

This is my baby's favorite book!

To a grown-up's eye, Benjamin Bunny's colors aren't all accurate. In fact, Peter Rabbits red radishes look a lot like orange carrots. However, this is my 7-month-old's favorite book! It's short, so we actually get through the whole book. It's tough, so she can grab and chew on the pages. But most of all, it's a wonderful size for little baby hands. She carries it all over the house, into the car, and even tries to feed it to the dog. Fortunately, the dog has the sense to simply sniff. You never know what babies are going to like, but she certainly likes this book.

I was surprised to read the other negative reviews... This is a perfect book for young babies. The pictures are simple and bright. I appreciate that there aren't any gimics. There are different objects on each page. My daughter liked the pictures of the rabbits just as much as she liked the watering can and the lettuce. This was my baby's first real favorite book, so I give it 5 stars!

Relevance to Peter Rabbit? And bad chemicals.

Peter Rabbit is on the cover and the first page. Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail appear on the next page. In the remainder of the book, there are no more bunnies...just lettuces, watering can, Mr. McGregor. There is no story, and the pictures, without context, seem useless.

I, like another reviewer, didn't like the chemicals; even the Priddy books smell bad to me, but the Peter Rabbit book was much worse. I ignored the surface-wash-only instructions and put all of our cloth books into the wash and air-dried them. That took care of the chemicals (extra cautious people could do this multiple times) and the books were unharmed.

My seven-month-old daughter didn't really care for this book because it didn't have much substance--too simple and ugly fabric colors. She likes the "Going to Sleep" book or "Dancing with Degas" or "Touch and Feel Animal Farm" better.

Not only dull, but possibly dangerous
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-08
As previous reviewers have mentioned, this book does not contain much substance. It consists of 8 pages. On each page there is simply one character or object from the story and the name of that character/object underneath it. The illustrations are nothing fancy, and considering the other high quality cloth books out there (like all of the Priddy books) it is not worth it.

To be fair, I do not know whether or not my child likes it because I will not let him near it. The book has a very strong odor of whatever chemical they used for the pictures. The book does not come with washing instructions, but since most cloth books are surface wash only, I do not want my child chewing on what could be a potentially dangerous chemical! Beware!

Don't waste your money on this one. It is not interesting at all. Very dull drawings. My eight month is not into this one at all. She likes to chew it and that is all. Buy something else...I definitely recommend "Squishy Turtle and Friends" cloth book--provides hours of entertainment for my little one.

The Tale of Mr. Tod

Review Date: 2001-07-09
Beatrix Potter's tales have often revolved around endearing characters such as Tom Kitten, Jeremy Fisher, or Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Sometimes the main characters have been of the mischievous type like Squirrel Nutkin, Hunca Munca or Samuel Whiskers. Well, in "The Tale of Mr. Tod", the main characters, Mr. Tod and Tommy Brock, are two thoroughly disagreeable and unpleasant creatures. Mr. Tod has foxy whiskers and is of a wandering habit. The other animals either cannot bear him or are frightened of him. He has several different houses but is rarely found home. However, his houses are not always empty, for Tommy Brock is prone to moving in without Mr. Tod's permission. Tommy Brock is a fat, waddling badger with a horrible grinning face and a habit of digging things up. One day he pays a call to old Mr. Bouncer, Benjamin Bunny's father. Today he is in charge of looking after the young, while Benjamin and his wife Flopsy are out. Unfortunately after conversing with the badger and smoking a very strong cabbage leaf cigar, the old rabbit falls asleep and Tommy Brock makes off with the rabbit babies. When Benjamin and Flopsy return they find their young gone and Benjamin at once goes out to track down Tommy Brock. Along the way he enlists the help of his brother-in-law, Peter Rabbit. Of course, they are not the only ones after the terrible badger. It seems that yet again he has set up house in one of Mr. Tod's residences and the fox, who is not in the best of moods this day, discovers the badger asleep in his bed... There are not many color pictures in this book, but there are many black and white illustrations in the style of woodcuts. Of course the story is extremely interesting and suspensful. "The Tale of Mr. Tod" is a longer story than some of the author's other tales. Also, there is more narration than dialogue and the language is early twentieth century, so this story may be more suitable for older children. Parents and children should not pass up this lesser known tale by a very talented storyteller and illustrator.

The only thing I liked about this book was the classic Potter characters. Other than that, this was a long, boring and tedious book for both reader and listenner. The "chubby" aspect of the book made it come apart at the spine much faster than a normal size book. It seemed that someone just wanted to make a dollar off the Beatrix Potter reputation for quality stories, and tarnished it instead.
