Jonell, Lynne. Emmy and the Home for Troubled Girls. Art by Jonathan Bean. Henry Holt and Company. 2008.

Emmy from "Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat" (Henry Holt, 2007) is back with her best friend Joe and her delightful animal friends in another amusing fantasy adventure. Emmy, Joe, and her new friend Meg get involved in rescuing some kidnapped children who have been shrunk and enslaved by Emmy's former villainous nanny, Miss Barmy. Jonathan Bean decorates the page tops with a recurring closet shelf that hints of the mystery in the story, and cleverly creates an animated mouse figure gradually climbing a rope up to the shelf as the story progresses. Well-written humorous dialogue and engaging characters make this book an appealing read for children, ages 9-12.

Begining Gliding

This book is a well written and easy to understand introduction to the sport of gliding. It explains the basic theory of aircraft manuvering and can be put into use the second you step into the cockpit. My only gripe is that author tends to be a bit teacherish and expects his students to be easily confused and scared durung their first flight.

Where does chocolate come from?

Review Date: 2004-06-05
Has your child ever asked you the question of where chocolate comes from? My kids are full of questions and this book is a great way to answer one of those questions. My second grader was able to read this book with great ease (he's autistic). My 3 year old was amazed at where chocolate came from. The photos are wonderful compliments to the story. There is a table of contents, glossary and index included in the book. This is a great addition to a social studies lesson about Central and South America or food processing. Worth reading at home or in the classroom.

This isn't a new book; it has been around for a while. I discovered it at my local library and had to have a copy. I do not eat meat and also cannot tolerate gluten so this book covers both areas. It has some wonderful gluten free recipes in it. I have tried about a half-dozen so far and all have turned out good.

Optics and electronics on 1 chip?

Review Date: 2004-06-10
There is acute interest in being able to fabricate devices using silicon-germanium compounds or alloys, in the context of conventional silicon production techniques. The authors examine the various materials processing and fundamental properties here.

As they suggest, being able to economically make a direct band gap SiGe alloy layer inside a Si heterostructure sandwich could enable a Si-based device that is sensitive in the visible spectrum. And that hopefully has fair efficiency in converting incoming photons into current. The promise is that a SiGe alloy can be made with similar lattice constants to Si, and similar thermal expansion coefficients. So a device might be easier to make than trying to integrate Si and GaAs/GaAlAs, with their quite disparate properties.

Also, if the above becomes possible, then it might also be economic to build an LED or laser, emitting in this wavelength range, and fully integrated with current Si VLSI.

The book holds out promise for this goal. Though not yet achieved.

A Motivating Book

The book is divided into 3 parts: 1. Inventors and their inventions, 2. How to be an inventor, 3. For futher inspration.

Part 1: There are 20 stories about young female inventors and their inventions are divided into different categories.

Part 2: This part makes it easy for you to start inventing something yourself, which guidelines and tips for every step.

Part 3: This section has lots of good, useful resources, not just for inventing, but also for schoolwork and further reading.

I read this book around 2 years ago when I was younger, and it really motivated me to start seeing things with a new perspective and to be more creative. It's a great book for young people. It encourages one to be innovative.

Excellent writing!

This is the fourth Harry Starbranch mystery and all four are excellent reads. There are several strengths: good mysteries, evocative Wyoming scenery, small town life, and a folksy hero. It would be fun to hang out with Harry, drinking, listening to country music, taking in the vistas, and shooting the breeze. These books deserve more success, and I hope Gregory Bean keeps them coming.

Good regional mystery

Influential Texas rancher Walter Lacy pulls strings to insure the Texas Rangers assign agents from outside his county. He specifically asks for retired Captain Alfred Jenkins. Captain Claude Groves and Alfred's daughter officer Carla Jenkins receive the case involving the hanging of Lacy's son Danny from a tree with red bark that allegedly once flowed with the blood of thirteen lynched souls.

Carla and Claude journey to Presidio County where the weather is torrid and the people are arctic. No one in Marfa cooperates with the law, especially since most locals figure a personal spat ended in a not so important to solve murder. However, after searching the victim's home and finding a drug manufacturing facility there, the two rangers know there is more to this killing than a personal feud.

THE HANGMAN'S TREE is an interesting police procedural starring two wonderful Rangers. The who-done-it with its inquiry is entertaining, but the story line belongs to the two law enforcement officials and the remote Presidio County. Claude is an old fashioned cop who mistrusts electronic gizmos. Carla believes in automated, relational databases. Claude's efforts to bury his attraction to his subordinate add to the tensions supplemented by the local residents who refuse to cooperate. Fans of a modern day Texas Ranger detective tale will enjoy Frederic Bean's novel.

Harry Hoyle's Giant Jumping Bean
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-17
Harry Hoyle collected all sorts of things. If it could be kept in a room, he had it. In fact, he lived in a house with 72 rooms, each filled with a different collection. Harry had everything from string and rocks, to telephones and ice cream. Harry and his cat, Max, would go to a different room each day, but never to the room where the giant jumping bean was kept. The jumping bean was very dangerous and had to be locked in at all times. Then one day, Harry realized that the housed was full. He had no place to put his new collection of old doorknobs. Harry finally decides that the jumping bean must go, even if it means taking it out of the house himself. Will Harry's plan work?
This fun-filled story is easy to read and follow along with. The humorous personality of Harry and the exasperated attitude of his cat, Max, make the comical duo very likable. Although the idea of a giant jumping bean is a little silly, I think it is a great topic for a children's story.
