Having Fun in a Kinder More Sustainable World
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-20
If you every wondered what it would be like if people really got behind cleaning up our Planet to creat a more just and sustainable world, you should read this book. It's funny but filled with good ideas for positive change, carried out by miraculous folks like you and me. It's not only surprising what can happen with a change of heart and mind, it's humorous and insirational. The characters are suspiciously like folks we all know and some of them are as surprised about the amount of fun it is to live on the Earth well as the reader will be. A must read for anyone who works to get others involved in ecology, conservation or environment justice work. You get a chapter on the real reasons people would not want to join in and good ideas about what to do about that. Have fun with this book and Be Kind.

The thing I like most about this book is Nancy Munger's cheerful and nice art. The story is also entertaining and I liked the characters. In the story "Rob" finds out that working hard and doing a good job can be rewarding, however the story is not "teachy" or overly didactic.

"Strident?" Only if you DISagree

I couldn't agree less that the author is "strident" in her defense of using canned beans. Just yesterday I was sharing a bowl of Hoppin' John soup (based on frozen black-eyed peas) that I'd made for a friend who loved it as much as I did, and I told him how long and how much I've appreciated the author's common sense, forthright defense of the convenience and healthfulness of a product that cuts so many, many hours out of good-food prep time. I've been cooking from this book for years and am on precisely the same flavor wavelength as the author; I've found recipe after recipe to produce food that's fragrant, bright, beautiful, and quick to fix. Even the recipes I've liked the very least have still been good. But the greatest are simply spectacular and many, many are great. Couple favorites: the aforementioned Hoppin' John soup; Fusili with Lentils, Feta & Cilantro; Halibut & Cheese Pie with Rice Crust; Sun-Dried Tomato, Fennel and White Bean Soup; Crab & Rice Gumbo.

Although short and concise, this book captures the essence of the Grand Canyon. Both the writing and the photography are interesting and beautiful. This should be an essential part of anyone's collection who, like me, is truly in love with the Grand Canyon.

This book is great. I think many people avoid discussing death. These epitaphs allow us to enter this topic in a gentle and even humorous way. Many of these epitaphs are very touching. Some are hilariously funny. Now I'm left wondering what my epitaph will be. What kind of message do I want to leave the world? This book acknowledges and respects death which we will all face someday. It also motivates and inspires us to live our lives to the fullest. I recommend it.

THE GREAT AMERICAN AFGHAN has appeared in Knitter's Magazine and has appeared to first-timers as well as those who never thought they could master an involved project as large as an afghan. Here the basic square is used to demonstrate a range of knitting techniques which include incorporating bobbles, applique, lace and more. An important acquisition for any beginning knitting library.

This is such a wonderful series -- for classroom, home fun, or homeschool (I've used it in all 3 settings). Everything you need to help kids really understand science is right here. The authors have made apoint to provide a quality educational experience using only very simple easy to find components. As a result, kids get the real point of the experiment, instead of assuming that the results would only apply in a laboratory setting.
There are great explanations, teachers notes, help with drawing diagrams for kids' notebooks. They also give great advice on scheduling -- even how to handle weekends.

This is a delightful collection of limericks centering around our frail human existence, and it's inevitable end. Life is short and fraught with dangers. Cap'n Bean makes us laugh at this reality. This author writes in perfect metre and with humor that is unsurpassed among limerists. Put this one on your coffee table and watch your friends wince... and then giggle. It is a unique (not for children) collection of five-liners.
