This book is fantastic. As a vegetarian, I am delighted at with the plethora of recipes from a variety of cuisines. This book also includes many dishes for meat eaters. It begins by describing each bean and grain, quick ways of cooking them and their nutrition. The pictures are very descriptive and very tempting. I was surprised to see even a baking section- certainly makes me want to try out every new bean and grain I had never heard of before. I stuck to the recipe for wild rice salad and the outcome was simply superb. Even for a person not interested in cooking, the variety should dazzle a food lover.

A Smoothly Written and Often Amusing Policy History
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-05
"In "Big Government and Affirmative Action," Jonathan J. Bean tells the story of the role of small business in the growth of the American state. This compact account is a fine sequel to the author's award winning "Beyond the Broker State: A History of the Federal Government's Policies Toward Small Business, 1936-61" (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1996). It describes the process by which interest-group actors (business groups, congressional committee, and bureaucrats) operate to build nearly indestructible government programs. In addition, the book adds an important dimension to the story of the development of affirmative action. In manifold ways, congressional and bureaucratic policy toward "disadvantaged" businesses adumbrated later policy toward disadvantaged minorities and myriad of other victim groups, and the Small Business Administration (SBA) itself took up minority preferences as its raison d'etre."

Jonathan Bean pulls no punches in this nonpartisan look at an agency notorious for corruption. Republicans, he explains, have supported the Small Business Administration to deflect criticism that they are beholden to "big" business, whereas Democrats have supported it to show that they are not "anti-business."

"Bean has done a model job in producing a smoothly written and often amusing policy history, and the University Press of Kentucky has done excellent work in editing and publishing it."

You will love this book and so will your children. I first came across this book in our local library when my two year old nephew was taken by the picture of the lonely blue bean waving at us from his rocket ship. When we got home, we read it three times right away, and then three times before bed, and then three times again in the morning, before he had to go to school. Even his brother whose five and usually won't read "kid's things" sat through many of the reading. A wonderful book for any child or adult who loves to dream up new things to do with their day.

If you want to sit back and enjoy a few lauchs at life, death and other things we all have to deal with as we continue along our everyday trials of life ;you will find it all in this little book. You gotta admit;it's a real breath of fresh air to get such down to earth humor from ,of all people,--a lawyer.
Here is a fellow who had many struggles in deciding what to do with his life.He ended up as a lawyer;but don't let that fool you.He is realy a humorist at heart and a an observer of life;and more suited at entertaining us than doing his thing in a dreary courtroom.
Canada is not particularly known to Americans for great humor. That could be because of our Socialist tendencies ---it ain't easy to live amongst Socialists and find much humor;but Strigberger is an exception.
Some of Canada's best humor and sarcasm comes out of Montreal.Need I say more than, read Mordecai Richler.Maybe there is something in the water in and around St.Urban Street.
For some irreverent views and observations on Birth,Death,Money,War and Peace,Md's,PHD's,Dentists,Lawers,People, and just about everything we deal with on a daily basis---sit back and enjoy a slightly bent but funny observer of life.

I really enjoyed this book. The Cahuilla Indians led a fascinating existence living in the mountains and deserts of Southern California (near Palm Springs). The book describes the way that they adapted to their environment and live in the mountains in the summer and the desert in the winter. This is a very good educational book.

A friend of mine actually worked with this author procuring fresh ingredients for cooking classes she held in her home which is how I learned of this book and the other book 'Cooking with the Seasons'. The recipes are fabulous but also use heirloom varieties of beans (many new to me) and the author includes background and history about the beans. It's really fascinating and fun. She also lists sources for the beans and I've found online suppliers who sell the more unique varieties. I've re-purchased this book for gifts multiple times. Perfect especially at this time of year!

Life-changing Diet

This has got to be the best diet on earth. The recipes are simple and all dietary aspects and restrictions are explained well. I lost 14 pounds in a relatively easy few weeks. I have recommended this to every woman I know who wants to drop a dress size or two. As a benefit (or maybe this should be the main purpose) I felt healthy for the first time in years. If you buy only one diet book ever, make it this one.

I am the daughter of Ronald G. Bean and I as a young girl when my father published this book in Saginaw, MI. My father put a lot of time and research into this publication, as there was/is little known about this automobile. My father was very fortunate to have had a grandfather employed at this assembly shop back in the early 1900's and was able to contect with living family members of the late Byron J. Carter. [...]. Maybe with enough inquiries we can reproduce this publication in memory of my father, the late Ronald G. Bean. Janet L. (Bean) Lee
