What Your Colleagues Are Saying About This New Text!
"Shelley Aley,
James Madison University
"What I find appealing about the book is how it proposes to awaken us to unfamiliar topics that have a tremendous impact on our lives,
and it aims to show us how our own choices impact others.
It takes a great deal of mystery out of the issues and illustrates just how they matter to us. [...]
What I'm seeing here will connect with my students at a time in their lives when they may be most willing/needing to connect.
Johnson's writing is fresh and readable.
The book is simply a good read."
"Farrah Cato
University of Central Florida
"I currently use a global reader in my Comp I course and found it lacking in the topics covered (most deal with the idea of globalization, with few specifics); Global Issues, Local Arguments is precisely what I have hoped to find in a global reader."
"James D'Agostino
Southeast Missouri State University
"I'm immediately impressed with how the text guides students through the readings,
prompting students to focus their analysis on both how an essay's constructed as an argument,
and how it influences a reader's views;
implicit in this line of questioning is the expectation that each argument a student reads deepens and reshapes his or her understanding of an issue.
The discussion questions do that so well throughout."
"Collin Hutchison
San Jacinto College South
"The overall, interdiscuplinary approach to teaching rhetoric and composition will offer students a chance to see arguments in the context of current issues and gives them the opportunity to sense how intimately language shapes thought,
public policy and personal lives,
a form of education that will resonate with them long after the last assignment has been submitted."
[from the book of backcover]
"Why should writing instructors bring global issues into the writing classroom?
Global issues belong in writing courses because we are bumping into these issues more frequently and because global issues spark students' interest in learning and lead them to produce good writing.
Daily,
the media bombard us with stories and images that remind us that our states,
regions,
and country are part of the larger world.
Controversies over free trade,
outsourcing,
immigration,
climate change,
and bird flu increasingly demand our attention.
In my writing classes,
I have found that students welcome the opportunity to study these controversies,
to discuss and write about them.
Some of these issues are new and intriguing to students:
How does our shopping at the local mall affect workers in clothing factories in China?
How does lack of safe water in Africa threaten global security?
Some are immediately relevant:
How will sending businesses and jobs to Mexico and India affect the number of jobs available to young adults in the United States and Canada?
Some have urgency:
Should each country create an emergency plan for containing outbreaks of diseases such as bird flu that can spread in hours around the world and can kill millions?
From working with global issues in my writing and argument classes,
I have discovered that these issues,
connecting "over there" with "home here,"
appeal to today's students,
whose generation has been shaped by media images from around the world.
Global Issues, Local Arguments is based on two main ideas:
first,
seeing how global issues touch us and how our decisions as consumers and voters have far-reaching consequences is very important in today's world,
and
second,
studying the public arguments on these issues in the writing classroom has great value.
Unlike multicultural texts that have for years featured readings about the world,
this text is an argument reader that introduces students to
GLOBAL CONTROVERSIES AND THEIR LOCAL CONNECTIONS.
It helps students think their way through these issues and enter into them in their writing...."

Thoughtful cooking from a master

Kevin Graham was the executive chef at the Windsor Court hotel at the time this book was written, and the chef at Sapphire
when it was published. Under his stewardship, both were among of the best restaurants in New Orleans. His menus were ambitious,
forward thinking, and sophisticated. His thoughtful approach to humble ingredients such as beans and whole grains makes this
relatively short cookbook a classic.
Since the book was published, some ingredients which at the time were difficult to obtain are now more common; think quinoa, for example. There are a few recipes that would be difficult for a novice cook to pull off, but for the most part Graham combines flavors and techniques in very interesting - and useful - ways.
This is one of perhaps 10 cookbooks that I'll bring with me the next time I have to evacuate New Orleans. Partly because it's somewhat rare, but mainly because I enjoy it so much, and consistently find something interesting and diverting inside.

This book's selling point for me is its emphasis on whole foods. It is great for anyone who is trying to de-emphasize meat
in their diets and build up the grains, fruits and vegetables. The recipes are fairly easy to follow--a beginner might be
left guessing how big a "medium" zucchini really is, but technique is explained well. The ingredient list is within reach
of most supermarkets. The recipes themselves are original and come out looking like the pictures. Many are naturally low-fat
and those that are not use the healthiest fats when called for. Butter is scarcely used and I don't think cream is mentioned
anywhere. I enjoy reading and cooking from this. My only criticism is negligible: for far-sighted people, even those assisted
with monovision contacts or bifocals, the type in which ingredient quantities are set, particularly the fractions, is difficult
to read.

It might be clumsy and big, but so were my numerous expeditions into the mighty Grand Canyon. For all who have seen the G.C.
firsthand, the "coined" phrase is: "Pictures don't do it Justice." Which is absolutely true. However, this is the only book
I have found that comes fractionally close to relating the G.C.'s awesome scale & vistas! It makes a perfect book for the
cocktail table. This is the "creme de la creme" of G.C. Pictorial books. Get it! You won't be disappointed.

This is the perfect book for couples who are expecting their second child. The family cat, Hadley, goes through all the angst
and frustration of dealing with a new baby in the house. He experiences the typical hallmarks of sibling rivalry, including
having to give up the spotlight for the new arrival, but finally comes around in the end and decides the new situation isn't
so bad after all. It's a delightful story with fabulous illustrations that any young child would enjoy.

I have been reading the IVY & BEAN series aloud to my 6.5-year-old twins (and their 3-year-old baby sister) and they love
it. We are on book 2 and both the text and illustrations are so well done. Bravo to the publisher, the writer, and the illustrators
for so elegantly interweaving text and art and dialogue and getting the target audience with no talking down, no bad grammar,
no brattiness. . . . Fabulous series. Can't wait for book 4! BRAVO!

This book is fun to read because of the beautiful artwork and rhyming, but is very touching and moving. My first child loved
this book since it first came out and five years later, we fell in love with this book again with my second daughter. Truly
a family favorite and a book you'll never want to get rid of.
It also opens up the discussion of death and heaven, as the grandfather is in heaven, making a beautiful place for his granddaughter to come. It is not clear that the granddaughter died or if she is just visiting him in her dreams. Which leaves it open for interpretation.

Every parent should have this book on hand. Serious situations happen in every families life. Children need to be informed.
This book gently hints at what happens when a loved one dies and goes to heaven. This book, though it's rhyme and illustrations
make heaven (and life for that matter)a wonderful place.

Author J.P Bean is the only person to ever write a career retrospective on the life of british rock legend Joe Cocker. Originally
published in 1990 under the title of "With A Little Help From My Friends", this updated edition adds four extra chapters,
different photo's, and an updated discography. His life is traced from his humble beginnings in sheffield England, and his
rise to fame in the late 60's and early 70's, all the way through is dark days of the late 70's, and his return to popularity
in the following decades. Simply put, the book reads like an episode of VH-1 Behind the Music. Some of the more interesting
topics you will find of interest, is all the turmoil surrounding the "Maddogs And Englishmen" tour of 1970 and of course his
long addiction to drugs and alcohol that nearly killed him. Did you know that there was a second verse to "You Are So Beautiful"?
Joe was too intoxicated in the recording studio to do the second verse. The producer thought Joe singing the same verse twice
was good enough to release. he proved to be right, as the song became a huge hit. After Joe met his wife Pam, his life began
to straighten out, both personally and professionally. With help from Michael Lang[Woodstock producer], he slowly built up
a once lost career, and through hard work and constant touring he was back playing 15-20 thousand seat venues in the early
nineties. Joe cocker has proven that he is indeed a rock n roll survivor, and he continues to record and tour at the age
of 60. The same cannot be said about many of his 1960's contemporaries. He still maintains that magic growl and stage presence
that is unlike any-other. If you are a Joe Cocker Fan, this book is essential reading.

Cocker fans old and new, this is one you won't be able to put
down. J. P. Bean's up to date biography of the legendary Joe Cocker must rank as one of the finest and most vital rock chronicles ever written. From the first pages on, the reader feels as if they are walking right along side the singer and his mates during the early days in Sheffield, England, and travelling on down the road through his rise to fame in the pubs and clubs of Europe. We're then swept off (via imaginary helicopter) through the rock and roll dreamscape of Woodstock, and into the madness of the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour that would leave the artist completely disenchanted and
disenfranchised with the music business. Beyond the abuses, through good times and bad, Joe Cocker emerges as one of the most enduring figures in rock and roll history. This biography does as much or more visually than any film documentary ever could, in delivering a comprehensive and inspired story of one of music's most passionate and powerful voices. Joe Cocker is a true blue survivor, and J. P. Bean's telling of his story is essential rock history!

This book was the best I've read in a long time! The pictures were wonderful and the stories consume you. I felt as if I
were there among these events. Reading Kin Tucky became an addiction, and I had to force myself to take breaks in reading
so I didn't finish the book in one day. This book is great for any reader whether they be from Kentucky and have some knowledge
of these events already or not. A+++ from me and I can't wait to purchase a copy of the next book published by this author!
Thanks for keeping our history alive!

If you think that Dilbert is funny but doesn't go quite far enough, then you'll like this book. If you've ever skulked back
to your cubicle after being dressed down by a boss who is only half as smart as you are, then you'll love this book. It
does a very good job of lampooning many of the parts of corporate America that seem perfectly serious when you're at work
-- and perfectly ridiculous after a couple of beers. Whether you need the Pontius Pilate Finger Bowl or the Organic Seat
Saver (my personal favorite), this is the right catalog for you. There aren't many books that give me belly laughs, but
this is one of them. It would be a perfect gift for your favorite back-stabbing colleague.

say call the family and let's open the book and laissez les bons temps rouler!

This book is as much about the stories of family and friendship as it is about cooking. You can sense the passion for all
things food and fun in the authors words. I know I have lived the story. Brandon Hall, Tim Hall's son.
