Just You and Me .... What a fabulous book

My son and I have enjoyed this book countless time. He's a middle child, two siblings, all very close together in age. There are not many times that he and I have alone together. This book has brought a smile to his face EVERY SINGLE TIME we have read it together, from age three until now, he's almost five. We only read it when it's just the two of us. I can't recommend it highly enough. The story is sweet, the pictures are marvelous, and just wait till your child looks at you with adoring eyes when you read "Just you and me". It's a keeper.

A sweet story with beautiful illustrations

I really love the illustrations in this book. It is a very nice story for a father to read to a child. It addresses fear of rain storms in a very gentle way. It is sure to result in "again again" from your child, as it did mine.

profoundly important mathematics

This book (originally published in French and improved here) is a fundamentally important book opening up an entire field of mathematics. For a textbook based on this material and related topics try Burago-Burago-Ivanov's textbook on the subject which can be taught to first year graduate students. For mathematicians and advanced graduate students, Gromov's book is a masterpiece.

The nature of high dimensions: a geometric insight
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-26
Formally speaking, this is the second edition of a set of Paris lecture notes published by Gromov two decades ago in the French language. However, such a wealth of entirely new material has been added that in essence we are talking of a new book.

Among the additions, the bulky new chapter 3 1/2+ stands out, dealing with the phenomenon of concentration of measure on high-dimensional structures. This is a relatively recent discovery of modern analysis and geometry, tracing its origin to the work of Paul Levy and especially Vitali Milman. The essence of the phenomenon is that on many multidimensional structures, every `nice' function is constant with high probability. The manifestations of the phenomenon are many - from geometric functional analysis (Dvoretzky theorem) through information theory (blowing-up lemma) and probability (law of large numbers) to graph theory (superconcentrators) and topological dynamics. As Gromov stresses in his book, even deeper aspects of the concentration phenomenon have been long since discovered and are constantly explored in statistical physics in the context of phase transitions of various kind, and some of the first known examples where phase transitions appear in the context of geometry have been discovered by Gromov himself, e.g. for hyperbolic groups. Finding and exploring more instances of phase transitions in mathematics might well become a unifying heuristic principle across a large number of disciplines.

The mathematical setting for dealing with concentration and related issues is the concept of a metric space equipped with finite measure, what Gromov calls an mm-space. Apart from concrete objects (such as for instance spheres and cubes), there are `higher-level' examples of mm-spaces, for instance those whose elements are isomorphism classes of mathematical objects themselves (e.g. Riemanning manifolds or finitely generated groups). This leads to a probabilistic treatment of such objects. Of course Gromov's strength is that his treatment is always concrete and he never theorizes without having particular objects and applications in mind.

It is quite safe to claim that the full range and power of applications of the interaction between metric and measure are yet to be discovered, which is what makes this book so important. It is rich in open questions and suggested new research directions, but more than that, it helps the reader to develop a good intuitive feeling of where things are going these days, what things ought to be done, and what constitutes proper mathematics.

Even though I unexpectedly found myself among the privileged ones who received a copy of the book as a gift from the author, I would have certainly purchased it otherwise, as I firmly believe that every mathematical library in the world, be it that of a top-class University or just a modest, lovingly selected office collection of a humble mathematician, will be wanting without a copy of the monograph under review, which might well become one of the most important books in mathematical sciences for the early XXIst century.

Witty, sexy, adventurous, fast-paced, RIVETING! Like a breath of fresh air. It isn't merely literature. It goes beyond literature. It is hard to believe that something as exciting and full of life and humor as this, something historical, no less, could be written by a contemporary author. A jewel!

I agree completely with what the previous reviewer [Parhat] said and will not bore you with variations on a theme . I have all the books on Financial Astrology that have been published and this together with the books by David Williams and Louise McWhirter are the best around . Those who know French should read also G.L. Brahy .

Cycles and Stock Maket

I purchased this book a long time ago and did not realized itsimportance. Apparently the book keeps the good stuff later in the book, prefering to teach the reader with the basics of astrology. The technique is very valuable even for those who do not believe in astrology, which is the method of averaging GDP, Stock market indexes in relation to the cycles of the planets. Of course the techniques can be applied to cycles where it can be 1 year, 1.5 year, 4 year. Once you averaged them out , then using the bradley model, you can predict the stocks - non-linearly, with a VERY GOOD predictive accuracy! Softwares are critical for you to explore and can be obtained at Alphee.com or other books by Rob Merridian or David Williams in case this book is no longer available. I have explored every technologies known in the stock markets from chaos theory, neural networks, moon tides, technical analysis, fundamental analysis, cycle analysis, EMH, factoring analysis, value line, multiple linear regression, visual recurrence analysis, etc. etc. etc. and I can say with great confidence that there is something to astrology their timing can be deadly accurate! W.D. Gann predicted the stock market crash in 1929 to the very month, missing by only a couple of days. Two British astrologers actually predicted the stock market Crash of 1987 to the very day before the crash by one year in advanced. These are all documented and are reported to newspaper before it actually occurred. You will find the details how they managed to predict them. David Williams made a million in the stock market using his astrological techniques. One astrology fund outperformed the stock markets averages in 5 out of 7 years. You will find this and other information in this book, It will change how you view the markets. It totally changed me! All these amazing fact is well worth the reading. Use it along with your fundamental and technical indicators, it is indispensible! END

This book is great to make moving to a new house, school, or city easier. It isn't one that we read again and again but it did give a great opening for conversations of topics related to the move. It is one that I will share with friends when moving. But I've never found a Usborne book that wasn't super.

We purchased this book to assist our son, who is almost 3, with our upcoming overseas move. While this book is not geared towards overseas moves, the pictures of the parents sorting their belongings, items going into a moving truck, and items being unloaded into a new home are wonderful. Our son has requested that we read this book many times -- it is in his "favorites" rotation.

An amazingly detailed chronicle of the 1 Suffolk infantry
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-08
A dual language book with its text in both English and French, Normandy: The Search For Sidney by Thomas J. Bates and Eric Lummis is an extensively, meticulously researched history and vividly presented narrative journey, which reveals the authors' search for the battle site in Normandy where one man, Corporal Sidney Bates, held back a force of panzer-grenadiers almost singlehandedly and paid for his valor with his life. Normandy: The Search For Sidney also reveals the courage of a French woman and her family in the tumultuous events up to and surrounding D-Day, and an amazingly detailed chronicle of the 1 Suffolk infantry during the D-Day battles that changed history. Black-and-white photography enhances this vivid, visceral narrative which is an especially recommended contribution to Military History collections in general, and World War II European Theatre military buff in particular.

An Outstanding Addition to any Library

Many of us dream of visiting the sites of great battles of WWII or Korea. That is, indeed, the reason KilroyWasHere.org was started. See the Foreword (Volume 2). Tom has actually done it and written a gripping, historic book about his adventure. We have read a lot about the landings at Omaha (USA 1st Div.), at Utah, (USA 4th Div.), but little about the landings at Gold (British 50th Div.), Juno (Canadian 3rd Div.), or Sword (British 4rd Div.) This great book changes that about Sword in an up close and personal way.

It is really three books. Each could be a book by itself and well worth the read! The first is Tom's own. He discovered and was intrigued by Corporal Sidney Bates (same last name but not related) whose single-handed efforts, firing a Bren gun from the hip, stopped an attack by panzer grenadiers after D-day. For this he won The Victoria Cross, ". . . his sovereign's highest decoration for valour . . . " Tom's search is for the exact place where Sidney gave his all. Tom, himself a WWII veteran in Burma, was helped by two Sword survivors and many French locals who ". . . gladly gave their liberators the 'freedom of their fields' in return for the blood their comrades had spilt there."

An interesting aside is that the book is written in English and French side by side in two columns per page. It is done this way as a tribute to a very brave French woman, Madam Lenauld whose story is told in the second book. Her father was the gallant French mayor maligned in the Movie "The Longest Day."

The third book is a detailed battlefield account of the 1st Battalion, The Suffolk Regiment who, having survived Dunkirk, landed at Sword.

All three are worthy of being stand alone books but together, they make an outstanding addition to any library.

This book is well-written and covers a vast scope. Contrary to what the title might lead you to believe, this book covers a lot more than just plain mediums. In fact, it offeres detailed information on just about any faction in the Skinlands that might interact with the Restless Dead: "Boardwalk mediums" found at carnivals and circuses the ruthless Giovanni vampires, even charlatans and frauds who possess no real talent, but manage to offend wraiths with their very presumption and chicanery.

This book is definitely worth the purchase price- it will enrich virtually any Wraith chronicle.

This is a fine resource for mediums, much better than the Quick and the Dead. The systems stuff is vastly improved, with a battery of new merits and flaws for mediums that I actually found useful (and can be used to supplement or replace the hedge magic paths for interacting with wraiths). There is some good stuff on summoning, a large section on Native American medicine men and shamanic dealings with the dead, a fresh look at many of the old ghost-dealing groups, and a new ability for those people who have had enough with wraiths shouting in their ears.
