Three Fingers

Review Date: 2003-11-05
Three Fingers appealed to me ever since i first saw it. A book about mountain climbing, and a firelookout on a seemingly unclimbable peak. I opened the book to find out that every time I look out the window and into the mountains, I am looking at Three Fingers itself. That's one of the reasons I decided to climb it. After talking with Malcolm S. Bates in 1st Period english...yes, did I forget to metion that? My 8th grade english teacher is the author, Malcolm Bates. He gave me extra credit for reading the book, and more for climbing the actual mountain. Being able to talk with him about the book, i really got interested in it, and it was surprisingly good. If you like to read up on mountaineering or one group of tough guys, this is a great book.

Massillon story , well told

Review Date: 2007-06-10
Massillon is a city in North Central Ohio. Margy Vogt has written an excellent history from the 1830's to today. She considers all aspects:
interesting people, business, culture, architecture, politics This book features
many great pictures from the 1850's to the present. Towpath to Towpath refers to Massillon's beginnings as a canal town, to the excellent public park system of today that follows the old Towpath.
Massillon was the home of many interesting people from the Gish sisters, to Paul Brown to General Coxey of "Coxey's" army. Vogt tells the stories very, very well.

Excellent "foundations" book!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-23
This book covers wide variety of topics with such educated and organized fashion that the only thing I can say is: "I wish I had books like that when I was in school! " The book does have a "college" feel to it... Each chapter ends with the list of questions, to help you better understand and learn the subject discussed and do it the with maximum effect.
As authors state, "... if you are looking for techno-babble as designed by propeller heads, there are many other books on the market." and "If you want to learn the basics without having a degree in engineering... you came to right place."
The book is definitely not intended to be read from cover to cover. Personally, I obtained the book for the subjects of VoIP, IP Telephony, DSL and SIP - and I am not disappointed! This is a well written and structured book. Other chapters cover: OSI model, regulation in the industry, modulation and multiplexing, wireless communications, catv, and much more!
I would re-arrange some chapters, but this is my personal opinion which does not take away the value of the book.
All in all, this 600+ pages - 19 chapter treasure has found a well deserved place on my bookshelf!

The War Lectures: These are for everyone
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-02
Colonel Bates has developed a narrative style that makes even the uninitiated feel comfortable. You feel like he is in the room with you and some friends, delivering a talk on a subject in which he is an expert.

If you are unfamiliar with the Principles of War or have never been able to follow descriptions of battles, you will be surprised how engrossed you become with this series of lectures.

It's a great way to introduce yourself to the history of American warfare.

This is an excellent overview of steamboat design and construction - a great source for modelers who want to understand how a steamboat was put together and why.

A great companion is Bates' book on enginerooms!

This book was fantastic. My first graders got more info from than any historic book that I have shared with them. They remembered more details. It was great the way the author related the past with the future on their level. This is a most have book.

Review Date: 2008-02-24
Whie Deer, Ghosts of the Forest has some of the best photography you'll ever see that is NOT computer enhanced. The book captures the "Spirit Deer" of Wisconsin for all to see. A local treasure, but also of interest to all animal lovers. You can see why the NA people thought of these deer as being "Spirit Deer", special and sacred.
