Bates Books

I bought this book because I needed it for my english class; however, as I started to read it I really began enjoying it and reading it for fun. The narratives and the essays contain issues relavent to today's reading crisis even though some were written 50 years ago.

I own several microcontroller books, including Bates books about microcontrollers (PICs), the one before this one (the assembler one).

I have a good programming background in assembler for these micros, the mid range and base range (16Fs and 12Fs) so I know the architecture of several micros (including the new 16F887). Actually, if you know a little of PICs architecture you know it's very much the same on all the "product line".

I've programmed in BASIC with PICBASIC PRO, and know how the code generates (32 bytes of RAM just to use the compiler) but lately I wanted to learn another programming language for the Microchip PIC. Since I use 12F, 16F and 18F series I wanted a good compiler and I was between the FED C (from Dogan Ibrahim books) and the CCS (from several forums and the fact it can run in MPLAB). I own Prata's C PRIMER PLUS and "The white book" (K&R second edition) and have read a little, so if I see a program, I think I can understand it.

That been said, let's get to the book:
Bates does a great job of presenting the programming basics (for, while, if, switch, etc) with the CCS compiler, as he presents the program, comments on it (explains how it works) and provides several pointers on each subject. He also proposes several exercices at the end of each chapter.

After the explanation with respect to the programming fundamentals, he goes into the modules of the PIC (again, using CCS) and does a good job of explaining the program and also the inner workings of the modules.

If you have 150 dollars you could get the mechatronics development board from Microchip (I own it), since one of the chapters is devoted to it.

He states that you need almost no programming experience to get results from this book, and he might be right but, I think you must have some.

You could like CCS or not; comming from assembler I want to know where I put every BYTE and every BIT, I can tell you that CCS it's not a very good compiler (for the beginner it might be) because of the definitions but, that does not mean that BATES did not produce a very good book.

Anyone that want's to make the transition from Assamler to C (PICs) should get this book.

"The Works of the Reverend and Learned John Lightfoot" abounds with great history lessons of New Testament times. This book includes a full description of the temple and its service, as they stood in the days when Christ was on earth - complete with a detailed, labelled drawing of the temple, done by the author himself.

Among the many valuable lessons in "The Works of the Judicious and Learned Divine, Dr. Thomas Taylor," is an exposition on Eph. 5:15. The author stresses the importance of the Christian walking circumspectly, demonstrating which areas of life this admonition applies to, and how the Christian is to gain the wisdom he needs in order to obey it. In the words of Dr. Taylor, "A circumspect Christian is not so careful for the... tilling, and sowing of his field, the pruning of his trees, the feeding of his cattle; as in fencing the heart against temptation, in sowing the seed of God's Word, in weeding of sin by the roots out of his soul, in feeding and fostering of grace."

"The Works of the late Reverend and Learned William Bates," contains more than thirty sermons on such practical subjects as forgiveness, the fear of God, and the danger of prosperity. Several of the sermons in this book were preached at the funerals of such eminent and godly men as Thomas Manton, David Clarkson and Richard Baxter.

This is only a glimpse of what is available on these wonderful CDs. I can't recommend them highly enough, to anyone who wants to study Protestant Church History from those who were there.

I was shocked that this book was listed as used...It was in excellent condition for a fraction of the cost. I will be a returning customer.

My 9 year old daughter has read this book and has trouble putting it down. It has tought her alot about horses and things that can happen around horses. This is a book young girls would love. Great story line.

Roger Bate follows in a long line of authors who have written for the London based free market institute, the Institute of Economic Affairs. Capitalism by Arthur Seldon, Education and the State by E. G. West and Working Class Patients by David G. Green have all explored the development of solutions to social and economic problems without the state being involved.

The broader historical context can be found in the writings of the Scottish enlightenment, notably Adam Smith who saw the virtues of the free market and the superiority of men acting together to generate a solution which was not planned. later, hayek through his insight of dispersed knowledge recognised the limits to state action which could be overcome through individual economic actors working in concert together.

In this admirable little book, Roger Bate explores the fight that the (now) Anglers' Conservation Association has fought in cleaning up English and Welsh rivers and streams from pollution and other environmental damage. This voluntary club or society if you like has used the tools provided by the English Common Law to battle against polluters whether they be individual farmers, commercial enterprises, local authorities, government agencies (including environmental ones!) or nationalised industries. They have been remarkably successful in saving our streams and rivers despite being of small membership and limited in funds. Despite those handicaps they have fought against all powerful government and it's statute law to establish the pre-eminence of riparian rights.

Roger Bate sets out with remarkable clarity the history of the Anglers' Conservation Association and the principles upon which it is based. He examines the legal basis of the cases which have set the precedents for later action, landmark cases and shows how they have impacted on British Government policy.

If I have any reservation about this book at all it would be that there is not sufficient consideration of the impact of current European legislation and the possible impact of European policy on this area. However, this may be the subject of another research monograph for another day.

The book provides further support and evidence, if anymore were needed, for the superiority of individual action or individuals acting in concert over the futile although well meaning actions of the state. I commend it to all readers.

Don't be fooled by the title- although it focuses on the dark side of every Wraith, this outstanding book contains tons of important information on all sorts of subjects- from exactly what your Eidolon IS, and when it comes into play, to roleplaying romance and love.

Other important topics covered include exactly how Castigation affects your Shadow- and while your Shadow is by definition your adversary, the isn't always your enemy. There is a lot more to Psyche/Shadow interaction than just "I'm the Good Guy, he's the Bad Guy."

Every Circle of Wraiths should have this one- you owe it to yourselves... and to your Shadows. :)
