We're A Better Company Because Of This Book

I own my own business and was encouraged by one of our bankers to read Barton's book. The work is easy to read, well organized and pretty amazingly accurate. In my nine years of running a fairly large company, I've dealt with irate customers, earthquakes, contractors who filed for bankruptcy (mid project!), two serious cases of workplace violence, and assorted other not-so-mild incidents. This book spells out not only what could happen to your company, but what i REALLY loved was reading how other owners and CEO's got their companies out of trouble...and sometimes, how their mistakes made them considerably worse. Barton uses humor, fact, and practical insight to drive home the case for preparedness. I wish there were more photos in the book- those would have made the reading more enjoyable. Yet the case studies and interviews spice the work up very well, and this may be one of the single best books on management I've ever read.

When I saw the author on The Today Show a decade ago, I rushed to buy his book, and I've referred to it dozens of times each year at my job in Los Angeles, CA. To my delight, Dr. Barton has completely updated this book, and it's a joy to read. He examines why corporations in various industries face serious crises more than others, and then supports his arguments with credible, well written analysis. I learned much from the lessons of Coca-Cola's recall last year in Europe; even great brands can misjudge public opinion- and lose hundreds of millions of dollars as a result. I would say the best features of Barton's book are those that reflect on "best practices" in leading companies worldwide. And his new chapters on workplace violence, natural disasters and how to write a crisis management and communication plan all easy to apply, whether you work in public relations, security, human resources or in any position where you supervise people. Since Barton's first edition, he served as Vice President of Communication for Motorola, and I must say that his experience there boosts the practical value of this edition immensely. It's less theory this time, and more "here's the way it is" in writing: I valued his candor about managing downsizing, environmental spills and other serious incidents in the workplace. Barton's bibliography is thinner this time, as he has placed those resources on his web site. But that's a small point. Overall, this remains the single best book on crisis management I've read in a 30 year career spanning the industry. It's a must-read if you are interested in why companies get into serious trouble with the media, stockholders, employees and the public. His book is simply an outstanding read.

This book is one of the best medical school texts out there period. It covers all the major hormone pathways and associated disorders in a clear manner intended for the 2nd year medical student. Discussions of disease process are case-based. Outlines of all endocrine pathways are shown in figures to cater to those who learn by visualization. Tables of disorders are also plentiful. Simple explanations of biochemical and molecular pathophysiology are given whereever it's necessary to understand the disease process. Diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders is presented in an intuitive fashion. Also, multiple-choice review questions testing highlights are included at the end of each chapter. The one drawback to this book is that it is in black&white, with gray-scale images. Nevertheless, this is a minor demerit in a huge host of merits. I highly recommend this to all.

Review of set more than specific volume
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-06
Let me start by saying that I have owned the full 12-volume set for about a year and use it quite frequently as a resource. To be fair, I have only used this particular volume a few times. However, as there seem to be no competent reviews on the set as a whole, I did want to add my impressions of this terrific resource.

I can say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the 12 volumes in this set. Every portion has been quite helpful, and this is an amazingly simple and inexpensive way to assemble a good library of commentaries on the entire Bible. Obviously the commentaries are not as thorough as one may find in other series, such as the excellent (although not yet quite complete) "New International Commentary on the New Testament" or a similar series. However, for most Christians who teach or lead small groups in their churches, this set can serve as a great resource to get started with, and one that can easily be supplimented with specific volumes that treat a book of the Bible in greater depth as those books are needed. Additionally, this resource can be more useful than a larger volume in situations where one is interested in looking at a few chapters of scripture at a time, or where one just needs to understand what a verse or two might mean. Thanks to the very clear and practical verse by verse organization, it's a terrific tool to do just that.

Also, I will add that (at the time of this writing) it should be possible to buy the entire set for around $150 or less, so I would suggest shopping a bit if you plan to purchase all 12 volumes.

Strongly recommended.

Based on the New International Version, this detailed commentary includes analysis of the major interpretations of each passage. Hebrew knowledge not necessary, but helpful. Language notes are separated. Each 'book' includes Introduction and Outline, NIV Text, Commentary Discussion including all major views, and Language notes. Emphasis is on what text meant to the people it was originally written for. Does not include practical application, as the primary goal is to fully understand what the text says and means. College and Graduate Level Reading.

To comment the the words of another reviewer (" In a way it is a condensed version of Max Heindel's Rosicrucian Cosmo Conception.") This is because Max Heindel relied primarily on the workd of Rudolf Steiner in formulating his Rosicrucian teachings, but without any attribution. This was known even in Steiner's day.

This is an excellent little book. In a way it is a condensed version of Max Heindel's Rosicrucian Cosmo Conception. If you want a book that will give you a measuring stick to judge other books in the new age movement this is it. It will not insult your intelligence either. In the back is guidelines to develope yourself spiritual, but you will have to rely upon Steiner's longer works to fill you in on the details. Unlike Steiner's other works it is straight forward and easy to understand. Great little book.

Gila Monsters at the Airport is a great book (even for older children up to age 10) because it discusses how kids think about different parts of the country and how they think people live. It's a nice effort at trying to explain how people (Westerners and Easterns) describe each other in backward ways. This teaches kids that they have more in common with people in new places that they move to than they think. A nice lesson that can be learned at any age.

A great book to help kids adjust to moving to the other coast of the United States and realize that alligators really don't live in the Eastern city sewers and that the West isn't just a dessert cactus village.

I loved this book on Reading Rainbow with good old Levar Burton. I still remember the song they sang with this book on the show. It was really cute. Enjoy this one with your kids!! They will love the illustrations and the way it is written (from a kid's vocabulary and point of view).

"Gila Monsters" has to be one of my favorite children's books. It addresses the fear of a young boy from New York, whos "parents are moving out west." His friend told him that "Gila Monsters Meet You at the Airport," and he knows it's true, because he read it in a book.

When he finally arrives at the airport, he meets another young boy who is moving to New York and filled with fears, because there are alligators in the sewers. He knows it's true, because he read it in a book.

This book is a great way to defuse a child's fear of an upcoming move. And it's a fun read for adults as well!

All is right with the world

How many times I read this book to my children! The very youngest child can understand the story line and appreciate the repetetive text (which you can edit easily for your own sanity, if necessary). We are introduced to the little chick, his mother, and his home. Danger enters the chick's world in the form of a black, hissing cat, but Mom shields the chick with her big brown wing, and clucks the cat out of the picture. The chick meets a big frog and even falls into the pond and gets wet -- which little children think is terrifically funny. The bright, colorful pictures appeal to the very young and are easy on the adult eye. It doesn't sound like much, but it ends up being a very rich, warm experience to share this book with a little one. My 13 year old saw it today, and went through it with a bg grin on his face; which is why I checked to see if it was still in print. Thankfully, you can enjoy it with children you love, too.

This is a wonderful book for small children. They will love the main character, the chick, and his adventures. The reader will also enjoy the book and the reaction of the child listening to the story. Very cute and easy to understand. A wonderful introduction to learning about chicks and their mothers.

A Great Time is a bilingual compendium of children's poems in both English and Russian, by Russian-born author Masha Shurin. Playful color illustrations highlight the enthusiastic verse sprinkled with positive, character-building messages. A read-aloud treat for young people ages 2-8. "The Snail's House": The snail's house has no doors / So her friends can't come in. All day long she dreams and thinks, / Of how to visit them. // She can't invite the other bugs / To tea or for a snack, / Because her little doorless house, / She carries on her back!

- The text is beautifully written
- The story is simple and easy to follow
- Children like to participate by making the various sounds

Hedgehogs Inspire Daily Drumming

Review Date: 2000-07-31
Inspired by Harry's enthusiastic drumming and his band's musical merryment, my seventeen-month-old son and I now daily pound out joyous tunes on a collection of old coffee cans and wooden spoons. The repetitive tum-tum-te-tum and diddle-diddle-dum of the hedgehogs' drums moves us to dance, hum, and drum in different ways at every reading. My son loves to match the soothingly rendered animals to their contributed sounds as I ask "Who says 'Pweee', 'chkka chkka', or 'pop pop'?" And what toddler can resist accompanying the resounding BOOM! that ends this tale with his own whack on the can!

Best book written on the founder of the interpersonal school
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.

I've read all the major books written on Harry Stack Sullivan and this one is by far the clearest, most comprehensive, and easy to understand. I can think of no better introduction to the interpersonal school of psychiatry. Sullivan is one of those seminal thinkers who was ignored for years because he was so critical of psychoanalysis and because his ideas were so radical. Only now, fifty years after his death are the implications of his work beginning to be grappled with by the field of psychiatry. If you want to understand Sullivan, before you read Sullivan, read this book. This is the book to start with.

It was a fascinating and understandable read. I especially enjoyed the chapter on his personal history. It was a wonderful case formulation and gave greater depth and understanding towards learning about his theory and how it came about. I had no idea he was so influential and yet so overlooked. The author did an excellent job explaining possible reasons for this. I would recommend this book as required reading for counseling and psych students.
