My two-year old loves Byron Barton books in general and I bought this one to add to his collection...and of course I expected it to be really great as always. Suffice it to say that I am terribly disappointed! The illustrations are appealing, but the book is so violent...it's all about people and animals hitting and kicking and biting and more or less taking their annoyance/aggression out on unsuspecting victims. I do not consider myself overly "PC" by any means, but I must say that I was very uncomfortable reading this and will not read it to my son-- especially when I'm always trying to explain to him that hitting is wrong! Be warned.

I have known this book since I was a child and when my younger sisters came along (5 of them) I can remember our Mom reading it over & over & over again! Sometimes I would read it when Mom was busy. Two years ago I was blessed with a neice! I bought a copy for her and she absoultly LOVED it. I have read it to her countless times! This is a book that can span generations!
I highly recomend this book!

A man seems to be missing. A headless, handless body turns up hundreds of miles away. Are they the same? This a quite a tale of blind love, trust and betrayal. This is my first foray into this genre and I was hooked right away. Barton takes the facts and weaves a story that keeps you interested from the start. Somehow she is able to take what could be a confusing story, full of disparate parts, and weave them into a very intriguing mystery. In one sense it's a sort of a real life "Who done it". The fact that it is all true, only adds to the drama. It'll keep you guessing till the end.

This is a short, easy to read booklet on that shows that the current doctrine of "separation of church and state" was not the intent of the original Founders and authors of the Constitution. Might be a good booklet to spark the interest of some young person who is not interested in reading a lengthy book on the subject.

Good but too short to justify cost

Purchased this transcript and it is a great overview of the true meaning of "separation of church and state". True meaning in the sense that it is not even written in the constitution! David Barton gives a quick overview of where this statement comes from. Because it's a transcript, its a quick read and great to pass along to those who you would like to enlighten on the subject.

I found Taylor Barton's novel to be thoroughly engaging and difficult to put down. The characters were well-rounded for the most part, with most of them being just despicable enough to seem real. The men in her story were mostly weak and reprehensible, which might put some men off, but in the end there was enough redemption to go around and plenty of hopefulness, leaving me with a good feeling. If Taylor writes a sequel, I would very much look forward to reading it.

Love this hilarious fast- paced read!

I loved this hilarious and heart-warming story of a life in Amagansett, N.Y.! The story is well crafted and the quirky characters memorable. Barton captures all social classes in the Hamptons area not just the usual well-to- do sterotypes. The independent authors can really produce some gems. I recommend this book to anyone and have already passed it on to several friends!!!

Dr.Kunstlers "The Hothouse Effect" reveals the dynamic that I suspect we are seeing in the phenominal developments coming out of China today in their industrial and scienfific push towards world leadership. Reading it reveals clues to what breeds competitiveness and innovation. It may be a wake up call !

If you are searching for a resource to help you generate practical ideas to stimulate creativity and innovation in your organization, look elsewhere. The author is at his best when describing the culture and history of ancient Athens, Renaissance Florence or even the 20th centry Bauhaus. In fact, if you are looking to stimulate your own thoughts by researching these historical periods or locations, you might be better served to read historical works with more depth and then draw your own conclusions to apply to the place where you work.

In the end, this type of work represents the worst in "business research." The CHAI-T process described is a pseudoscientifical worm submerged in tequila-like snakeoil. The plotting of points on graphs and the creation of various geometric shapes smacks of another ancient practice ... smashing a vase on a table and having an expert come over interpret the remaining shards.

If you are looking for a more digestible and applicable resource, that offers no scientific delusion, read Tom Kelley's "The Art of Innovation" or even Seth Godin's "Purple Cow." You'll invest less time and come away with some practical ideas for your team or corporate culture.

Absolutely the "BEST" book I've read in a long time!

With its fantastic cover, electric colors, and jacket heading
which reads "Intensify Creativity in Your Organization Using
Secrets from History's Most Innovative Communities," the
"Hothouse Effect" is nicely packaged as an organizational
self-help book. But it is so much more than that. Although it
succeeds in this regard, it is organized in a way that allows
the reader to absorb practical strategies for innovation and
creativity in the workplace. The "Hothouse Effect" is not about
business as usual. As one reader to another, I suggest that you
follow the hyperlink, highlighted in green on the jacket cover,
and read the book.

Dr Kunstler has written an engaging and transcendent book that
takes the reader on a spectacular journey through and around
time to such places as Athens, Florence, Paris, Boston & New
York. Much of the text reads like a fast moving can't put this
book down novel, but it is pure non-fiction, and the characters,
whether historical or contemporary, are real people who have
successfully intensified creativity through an explosive
interrelationship of individual to group which Dr. Kunstler
calls the "Hothouse Effect." The secrets of this phenomenon are
here for anyone seeking an edge in this highly competitive,
interconnected globe of ours.

This is a ten-star book that should be on every business
manager's desk and made into software for the desktops of every
employee, teacher, student, artist, and musician.
The "Hothouse Effect" is absolute "Hyper-thought."

This book made me realize something that I probably didn't before. That is that an applied approach is just simply skimming. That's what this book does, it skims over the concepts of Algebra. This is definitely not a solid foundation and will not benefit you if you need to take Trig., College Algebra or higher math. For instance, graphing is something you do alot in algebra. This book does not introduce the TI-84 calculator which is essential in today's algebra. I took an intermed. algebra course at one school under this book. Well a few years later I had to retake intermed. algebra because I placed low on the math test and was put back into it at another school. I was surprisingly shocked that I had learned very little with the applied approach. It was as if I was totally new to algebra. If your instructor requests this book for your algebra class, you will not finish that course with a strong enough foundation in intermediate algebra trust me.

I was to start by saying that the seller did specify that this was the instructor's edition of the text and the book was sent timely and in excellent condition. the problem I have is with the book itself. As the teacher's edition it doesn't not meet my needs for the class. The teacher's edition gives the answers but does not break down how they arrived at the solution. Therefore, I have to purchase another textbook.

Strongly Australian readable poet
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-21
Andrew Barton Paterson (more commonly known as `Banjo' Paterson) is probably the loudest voice in late 19th century/early 20th century Australian literature, he certainly contributed more to Australian mythos than any other literary figure.

U.S. readers may recognise the title of this collection from the film which bears a more than passing (yet not terribly accurate) resemblance to Paterson's poem of the same name. Read the poem, it is stronger and the `Man' more mythic in Paterson's verse. You may also recognise "Waltzing Matilda" a poem later set to music that narrowly missed becoming Australia's anthem, certainly more Australians know the words to Waltzing Matilda than our official anthem, `Advance Australia Fair.'

Yet Paterson is more than this. The comedic "Mulga Bill's Bicycle' is perhaps as well known to Australians. The tale of the proud and arrogant Mulga Bill who claims "none can ride like me" and "I'll ride this here two-wheeled concern right straight away at sight." rolls on in an inevitable but rollicking and funny way.

His `Clancy of the Overflow' perfectly captures the Australian mood of living in the city yet eternally drawn to our wide brown land. It's final paragraph sums it superbly.

And I somehow rather fancy that I'd like to change with Clancy,
Like to take a turn at droving where the seasons come and go,
While he faced the round eternal of the cash-book and the journal --
But I doubt he'd suit the office, Clancy, of The Overflow.

I always enjoy reading his verse. It is easily read, quite short and many of them marvelously humourous.

To conclude Paterson is a strongly and uniquely Australian poetic voice. This collection has the best of his verse. I'd recommend it to all who have ever enjoyed one of his verses and to all who might enjoy some simply constructed but strongly evocative Australian poetry. Even fairly young readers would enjoy a lot of the poems in this collection.

What a find--a treasury of Australian poems!

I loved the movie "The Man From Snowy River" and knew it was based on the poetry of A.B. Paterson. I spent the last fifteen years looking for a book of his poems in every library and bookstore I entered. I never found one until now--what a find! The book has 129 poems, including the song "Waltzing Matilda". Many, like "The Man From Snowy River" are exciting. Some are funny ("Mulga Bill's Bicycle"), and some are sad and sentimental ("The Droving Days"). Most are about horses and cowboys, and they take place in Australia. I love this book--Banjo Paterson is a poet who has been ignored too long in the US, and I'm so thankful I found a copy on your site!

A Touching Story That's All About The Human Heart & The Power of Love

Review Date: 2008-01-12
Paul Gallico (mostly known now for The Snow Goose) was known in his own time greatly because of this little wonder of a book. If you ask me, this book is more about love than faith and determination, although all three of those qualities work side by side throughout this story about a little orphaned boy named Pepino who decides to go to any and all means necessary to save the only friend he has in the world, a donkey named Violetta. He tends to her the way any parent would tend for a child, the way any loving sibling would care for an ailing brother or sister, the way any pure-hearted and uncorrupted child would care for another in difficult times. It is also a story about the realities of the world and how even those who make a profession by acknowledging miracles sometimes have to be lovingly shocked into seeing them. It's really a story about the knowledge that if we say we love someone, then we are compelled by that love to make unselfish and ultimate sacrifices for them no matter what obstacles are in our way. It's also about how undeniably powerful seeing someone truly love someone else can be. Although this book has an undeniable Christian context, the lessons learned from this story transcend mere religion. It's about the human heart. And although Bob Barton's retelling is well done and Carolyn Croll's illustrations are beautiful, I much prefer Paul Gallico's own original text and David Knight's illustrations (Michael Joseph publishers, London, 1951, sometimes listed as 1953). But this story is so wonderful, I think any exposure to the story is worth experiencing. I'm glad this edition is available to toddlers and younger readers, especially.

This book was excellent, an insightful novel about a surrealistic health care system that has erie, Kafka-esque characteristics. While we trust this scenario will not happen, it also shows the importance of "high touch" vs. "high tech" in health care.

I've probably read over a thousand books---of many genres---in my lifetime, and "Points" is one I'll never forget. If you think national health care is the way to go, you may think differently after reading this book. Be careful what you wish for!

I like to learn something new in every book I read, and I certainly learned a lot from "Points." Do you know what "marasmus" is, and one of its causes? The author's hypothesis is fascinating in every respect: and it's credible and frightening to contemplate.

David Barton is definitely the next Robin Cook or Michael Palmer. "Points" is truly a book you will always remember.

Though I'm not an avid reader of thrillers, I found this book to be as compelling as Robin Cook's Brain and Dan Brown's Deception Point.

I could hardly put it down and was intrigued by the creative attempt to solve the health care crisis in America. So I'm recommending it to my friends who care about health care issues and anyone who loves a page turner.

Actually, I think it's an important book to read and talk about with others. Besides it's fun.

...and the meek shall inherit the earth...

I picked up this book first and foremost as a Rush fan. It was a very enjoyable read. Mr. Barton weaves an intricate web of plots together nicely while still maintaining suspense for the next 2 volumes in his planned trilogy. The author has also created some interesting characters that made me want to continue reading to see what would happen to them next. I found some characters that seemed to be a little abrasive, but I find a lot of people in the non-fiction world of "real life" to be abrasive as well! I would recommend this novel to sci-fi fans and especially Rush fans. It was very neat how the author was able to take isolated Rush references and include them in the novel in such a way that it seems like Neil, Geddy and Alex meant for them to be connected all along!
