My daughter loved this book so much when we checked it out at the library, that I decided to buy it for her birthday. Of course, I couldn't just find it at a store. Lucky for her, I found it online and with a cd! We love reading it together- she does the line "Jump frog Jump"

A Fantastic Book for young readers!!!!!!

As a teacher and an aunt I highly recommend this book which is a favorite with the kids! It's easy for them to memorize the lines and follow the words (a great skill to develop while learning how to read). A fantastic addition to any child's library of books!

I was SO glad when this came back in print. This is a cumulative tale a la "House that Jack Built". You can get the children chanting "Jump Frog Jump!" in a few pages. Barton's bright folk-like illustrations fit right in.

The repetition and predictable outcomes were a joy for my 4 year old boy. After 3 readings he enthusiastically read the Jump, Frog, Jump! page by himself! We used green pillows as lily pads and acted out the escaping frog scenes.

Experiencing The Pig in the Pond with preschoolers is a delight. Three to Five year olds will be fully engaged by the rich illustrations and simple text--words full of meaning to young children. My preschool class waited with anxious anticipation to see what that very hot pig would do AND what would happen when Nelligan came home. The end is silly and satisfying and just what the children were waiting for. This has become a much loved favorite in our classroom.

Delightful, Great laughability!

The Pig in the Pond was an instant hit with our son. Having seen the play "Charlotte's Web", he has grown sympathetic to the plight of pigs, and since they are very smart, any book about pigs is a worthy read. Neligan's farm is turned topsy- turvey when his pig chooses to do what a pig wouln't normally do, swim instead of wallow! Wallowing isn't mentioned in the story, but the shallow pond implies that plenty of wallowing could happen if he was not in the mood to swim, if he stirs up the water enough. Instead, Neligan's entire entourage of farm animals follows Neligan as he follows his pig into the cool refreshing water- Some smart pig. The illustrations are humorous and loveable, the animals and Neligan are all portrayed with wonderful expression. Five stars for the many times I am asked to read this book.

Neligan's pig doesn't swim... or does she? Find out in this delightful tale of a pig on a hot summer's day. The illustrations carry this simple story and the pig's discomfort is so genuine, I can't help but long for a paddle in a cool pool myself. It is also entertaining to see the outraged pond dwellers and their barnyard gossip chain portrayed... and the ending in which the tattle-tales join in the fun.

My two-year-old loves this story and it would also make good reading for the pre-school and primary child.

A rip roaring tale of a hot summer day!

Waddell captures the feeling of a hot afternoon in his humerous story "Pig in a Pond." While watching the ducks splash in the farm yard pond, the pig becomes more and more hot, more and more furstrated, because who ever heard of a "Pig in a Pond"? Finally, he give into temptation and dives in! When the farmer sees this, he decides its not a bad idea and joins the animals on his farm for a spash in the old swimming hole! A delight ful story perfect for reading alod on a sticky summer afternoon

This rewiew is based on the DVD rather than the book. If you can't find the DVD here, go to wallbuilders website. This DVD is Strong, documented history. I personally know many good black people who always vote democratic just because they think that they are supposed to. They have (sadly) not taken the time to look into the History of either political party. The same can also be said of many white people as well. History is ALWAYS valuable. When one watches this DVD (or reads the book) he will see which of the two major political parties has done the most to help black folks. Also highly recommended - "Unfounded Loyalty" by Rev Wayne Perryman.

This was an amazing DVD full of primary sources as is the case in all of Barton's works. This may be his best work yet. I appreciate someone who takes the time to research and present the facts. It's difficult to argue with the records of Congress up through the 1960's, which show that Democrats voted against almost every opportunity to provide equal rights for African Americans. You have got to see this for yourself. I'm not a Republican, and I won't pledge my allegiance to that party, although I do agree with most of what it stands for today. I do wish Barton would have spent a little more time on one of my heroes, Martin Luther King, Jr., but there is so much material that is covered (about 2 hours covering the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, Reconstruction, acts of Congress, and the civil rights movement in the 50's and 60's). Hopefully Barton can make a DVD on the life of MLK, who I have found to be a devout man of God and a prophet to our country. Based on my studies of the man, I cannot believe King would be at all happy with the politics and anti-Christian stances of modern Democrats. I loaned this DVD to a couple of friends, who also deeply appreciated the video. An excellent history lesson.

I have collected history books for many years. I have been an avid student of history since I was quite small- collecting books from the 1800's and even 1700's if I could find anything (which I once did but it got lost).

Anyway, I would normally not do this, but I saw this DVD and was so amazed that I sat with my mouth open much of the time. Never have I seen so much valuable information gathered in one place about the REAL history of the US and Black America that is not twisted to manipulate the viewer.

What we saw in this DVD literally changed our lives in a positive way. If I had the ability I would purchase tons of these to distribute to students throughout the US of all races to give hope and pride back to us all. We have been manipulated over the years to believe and feel things that are not entirely true.

This collection of information gives dignity back to both white and black people of the US. It does not hide anything bad, but it shows a lot of good as well. The DVD was exceptional- the real roots of the Democratic and Republican parties (which are well known facts, not contortions of reality) was very well done.

Did you know that there were MANY black men in Congress BEFORE the Civil War? Not just one.

I was astonished at the COMPLETE quotes from Frederick Douglass not just the truncated ones that travel around in the depressing museum displays that we have been inundated with around here.

This book is a must for every US citizen (and anyone else who wants to learn about US history). It unites instead of divides and that is precious these days when everythings seems geared to manipulate division instead of true unity between races in the US.

wallbuilders site is a wonderful resource where you can also see posters and visual aids as well as the media production of this title.

A great deal of information contained in "Setting The record Straight: History In Black and White," I was previously aware of. However, there was plenty I found to be "eye opening." But the most important reason to read this book is, it contains all of the information needed to verify the information it contains.

By citing historical and public records available to anyone, and giving one these resources, this book does more than "open your eyes." It feeds your mind and teaches you to not accept many of the established sources of politically correct messages about the origins of this country, and the self-serving politically slanted "truths" that are 180-degrees from reality. Buy it, read it, and check the resources for yourself - if you dare!

While reading South Station last week, I was repeatedly jarred into
the realization that this novel captured the forgotten essence of war and its cascading effects on those involved, as well as the generations that follow.

It was an enchanting read with magnetic characterizations. The palpable triumphs and losses of these WWII families are presented in a gripping and honest manner. It was extremely difficult to leave the story .

I am looking forward to sharing this great read withmy book club.

South Station is a wonderful book. Barton paints a beautiful picture of the virtue and simplicity of the 1940's. We are introduced to the captivating Honey Lee Murphy. Then we are allowed in to her private world and see her unique perspective of family, the church, WWII, coming of age and falling in love. Barton also includes a huge twist that leads Honey Lee to make a decision that may jeopardize everything she's come to know and love.

Once you enter Honey Lee's world you can't put the book down.

What I liked about this book was the insight into the heart of a faithful Catholic girl and her extended family and friends. Her thoughts and her prayers are delicately imagined. I'm not a Catholic so that view of the daily influence of religion and faith in a Massachusetts milltown after WWII was interesting. It was gripping to see the effect of large institutions of church, family, and war on average people in the mid-1940's. The effect of war on veterans and their families was especially poignant. It's a coming of age story of a courageous, beautiful girl. Read this book if you'd like to understand spirit apart from religious dogma and if you want an insight into small city life, postWWII.

Truck Song by Diane Siebert is a beautifully-written tribute tointerstate-trucking. The colorful verse draws young children into thestory, at the same time that the rhythm of the poem evokes the rhythm of a cross-country haul. The illustrations by Byron Barton vividly illustrate the poem's content, as one trucker sees his load to its destination. My two-year-old loved the easy-paced verse, and enjoyed the pictures of the different trucks. This was one book my husband and I actually enjoyed rereading multiple times in a sitting. Truck Song is sure to become a much-loved classic in our family,

My son, my wife, and I have all enjoyed this book greatly. The pictures are inviting and clean-looking, which is great for a toddler (many books for this age group seem visually cluttered), yet they include sufficient detail to reward close looking. The words, or lyrics, are quite fun to read and hear, making this book at times a welcome relief from the truck picture books with no plot (yes, my son is very interested in trucks!)--and from the many books for this age group that use oversimplified language. The words here are catchy but not sing-songy.

I found this book very interesting. It asks the question: Could a central form of global integration within society avoid the pitfalls of domination by the elites? That is a common fear among those who are against a so-called "New World Order" or a more powerful United Nations.

Mr. Bowen wonders if a global society can be created that respects the rights of all, and clearly adheres to democratic values. Part of his model is based on a United Order, a theological theory. Bowen makes a strong case for his arguments and the book is fascinating to read, mostly because it has such a unique argument.

One shouldn't possess that which is above another.

This book is the first of its kind to address this particular economic model in detail. It is thoroughly fascinating. The points outlined are exciting and fresh. They leave one curious as to what it might actually be like if such a model were implemented. Many will find this motivating and will help in researching such a model. Bowen brings this model to light with faith that it will work and bring a better world. Now with the world in more turmoil than ever, this will indeed be a light to everyone participating. Everyone! It appears that 'better way' Communism has failed and 'beloved' Capitalism has wronged us. What now? A United Order. It's possible for everyone to truly live equally and to live with an abundance of all that is needed, even Peace, Prosperity, and True Joy through Free Choice. Many thoughts have been compiled within about the different angles of a society with this model. It's evident by the author that many activities will take place and many more people will have to make this their focus in order for this model to be the standard. This book is a fantastic start. The author does a good job of helping the reader see what it might be like to live in a society with such a model of economy. He breaks down the positive and the negative points of previous and current models-including his United Order-to help illustrate what we desperately need and then explains how to achieve it. This is a great book and a perfect economic alternative to what the world has hitherto seen. Please pray for the naysayers. Thank you.

I was one of the first people to have had the opportunity to read the entire book. It was fantastic! Ingenious! It was very well written, easy to understand, and very well organized. The contents of the entire book were very analytical yet uplifting, positive, and gave me a feeling of hope for a better future.

The book provides a superstructure or foundation for an entire global system (a New World Order) that could be used to help bring justice, equity, unity, and peace to the world someday. The United Order model presented seemed viable, and it was very interesting. It obviously needs to be tested someday before one can conclude of its plausibility.

I especially enjoyed the literature review in Chapter 2 and the Bill of Rights located in the appendix. Preserving democratic processes using administrative law was new to me. I suppose administrative law could be a way to prevent elitism. I thought the analysis of the possibilities of implementing a money-less type economic system was very thought provoking.

Although the price is a little steep, I recommend this book to everyone. You can learn a lot from it.

Of all the books that I have read in my lifetime, this is one that I wish I never had to. The death of a father is one of the most difficult things that we can ever expererience and one that I went through recently. This book cuts through the trite and simple ("He's in a better place" etc) and offers a viewpoint that is more the way of a fellow traveler along a very difficult passage in life. I left this book knowing that I was not alone or crazy, and with a sense of having my feelings acknowledged as reasonable and necessary components of the healing process. The authors touch a nerve with this work and I would highly recommend it for any man who unfortunately finds himself in need of it.

A Must Read for men of any age, who have experienced their Dad dying.

My daughter bought this book for me while she was home for my father's funeral. It was such a good "source" to help me begin the journey of not having a "living" father. My mother had died 10 years earlier, but it is not the same experience. Since reading this book, I have purchased 4 more, for a brother, my 2 sons, and my late best-friend's son. Whether you are 60 like me, or 30's , it still helps. It is full of "experiences" shared by other men they interviewed.

A great book with a Christian dimension

Review Date: 2007-02-08
In this wonderful book, two Christian authors discuss the subject of the death of a father, and its affects it has on sons. Based on years of working with men, both old and young, this book shows how the death affects men, what they experience and how they deal with it. But, it goes on to discuss how men should face the future, and think about the legacy that they themselves will leave. As an added bonus, each chapter ends with a series of question to make you think about what you are going through.

Overall, I found this to be a great book. Yes, it was written by two conservative Christians, so expect it to have a Christian slant. In fact, I liked the Christian slant, which added a real dimension of spirituality that many books don't bother to discuss.

I am now a son without a father, and it's something that affects me much more than I ever expected. I am glad that I got this book, which really spoke to me. (I never picked up this book without ending up with tears in my eyes.) I think this book is great, and I give it my highest recommendations.

A Woman Born in the Wrong Time

Review Date: 2008-06-17
Stephen Oates is an outstanding narrative historian and a first-rate biographer. In this volume, he explores the life of one of the most remarkable woman in American history. Clara Barton was absolutely unwilling to accept the limited, simplistic role 19th Century society designed for women. Well-educated and dedicated to public service to the detriment of any personal life, she accomplished more in a lifetime than most women would a century later when opportunities were much easier for them to find. One of the finer qualities of Oates' writing is a complete unwillingness to pass judgement. Viewed from the perspective of her time, Clara Barton was pushy, ambitious, and entirely too willing to do things that were inappropriate or "unfeminine" in the pursuit of her goals. Viewed from a more modern time, these qualities are less objectionable, but at times she still seems to be an overpowering force that many men today would find difficult to endure. Oates offers few if any opinions on Clara's personality but gives us a completely honest and utterly objective look at a woman who was absolutely unwilling to conform to society's expectations. One can only wonder to what heights of government service she would have aspired if she were born in the 20th century. I suspect from reading Oates' account of her personality and ingenuity that she would have won my vote.

As a woman, this book gave me great inspiration to do something for anyone in need of moral. A MUST read.

Mr. Oates has done it again. You will know Clara Barton ambitions, downfalls, her emotions as well as her eager drive and personal duty to serve those who suffered so much during the Civil War years. The contents of this book will jump out at you and you'll feel that you're right next to the personalities involved. Oh, what women had to go through to pursue a dream or an ambition to contribute to society. Clara has a heart of gold as her patients in and off the field well knew, yet she was being torn apart on the inside by the constant fear that she wasn't doing enough for "her boys". Her personal life was put on the back shelf as she persued her one desire, to help those who were less fortunate. You'll follow Clara as she goes through the blood, sweat, tears, agony and the horrors of the war. This is a true story of a dark chapter in our american history when brother fought against brother literally. It is also of a dream turned into reality that Clara Barton followed with a sincere robust ambition to pursue the betterment of her fellow man. By caring for the soldiers on the battlefield, she proved to the Union Army that those suffering needed love, compassion and of course medical care where it was most needed - on the front lines of battle. This is a must read book for those interested in hero's, Civil War history or nursing history. Stephen B. Oates is the author of other fine books in history and ranks right up there with the big boys in the writings of history

As a nurse I have heard and read about Clara Barton for years. This book finally reinvents the tired images - melodramatic icon of female self sacrifice and courage, angel on earth and of the battlefield - and offers the reader a compelling, warm and very real picture of the person and personality of this famous individual. We see all aspects of Clara's character and the impact of the many choices she makes. We even get to see a few of the skeletons in her closet. Without this book, I doubt we would know that there were any! The amount of detail - and it is considerable - is so beautifully woven into the historical narrative that the story, like the Civil War, sweeps the reader from one new experience to the next. Read this and you will feel the jolting of army wagons along rutted roads, struggle to rest as the canvas flaps of your tent crack and strain in storms, gallop with joyful abandon along the beaches at Hilton Head - and much more. I purchased my copy at Gettyburg and it is the best "souvenir" purchase I ever made. Bravo to Stephen Oates!

This book is excellent. The anthologies available for the environmental movement in the United States are quite outdated, and we have needed another for a long time. The selections cover the subject matter very well, and keep the reader (and my students) interested--no small feat! His introduction is actually the best brief treatment of the subject I have ever read. I highly recommend this book. While my specialty is the history of fire, I find this book an extremely useful "big picture" for any class on environmentalism.

She then started the Barton Reading and Spelling System which is the perfect system to apply the sounds that she had learned from the FastForWord program!!! I can't say enough about this program!!!!! Get it!!! You won't be sorry!!!!

Absolutely amazing but before you buy

I've been tutoring my dyslexic daughter (age 12) for about a year using this system and she has improved tremendously. She even made honor role this year. You need to be aware of several things:

1) The system has 10 Levels; each level builds on the last one. (I think Susan Barton, the system's developer, estimates that each level takes 3-4 months with regular tutoring, but you can set your own pace)

2) Do not be tempted to skip levels. Level One seems inconsequential, but it is absolutely crucial that the dyslexic student learn how to distinguish sounds by deliberately listening for them. This is the only program of which I'm aware that specifically focuses on helping the student break sounds apart and then blend them back together, a skill that most dyslexic kids do not have.

3) The DVD training tapes are extremely easy to follow; even a novice tutor (i.e. mom) can learn how to effectively teach the system.

4) Each level, when purchased new, comes with only the tiles needed for that specific level. YOU ABSOLUTELY SHOULD HAVE THE TILES TO TEACH THIS PROGRAM!!!

I hope that this is helpful. I know the frustrations of being a parent of a dyslexic child who believes that she is dumb. These kids are not dumb; they are extremely gifted in other areas. I wish all dyslexic kids could get the help that they need. In my opinion, Barton suits this need very well.

You can Google the product name to find the site that sells all the levels of the program. Susan Barton also has very useful information about dyslexia on her site.

You do not need a professional, You may do this at home.

I have used this product at home for my daughter. It has increase her ability to spell, read, and sound out words. Before using the Barton Reading and Spelling program I paid $25.00 /hour for a tutor, if I could get one. This product really works!
