The story of Clara Barton, the Angel of the Battlefield
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-29
During the American Civil War two soldiers died of disease for every one killed in battle. Thousands died from scurvy, typhoid, diphtheria, and pneumonia. Boys from farms, crowded together with men from the cities for the fist time in their young lives proved to be especially susceptible to the onslaught of diseases. On both sides of the conflict medical care was, at best, primitive.

When the war began in 1861 Clara Barton was a clerk in the Patent Office at Washington. She started out collecting and distributing brandy, tobacco, lemons, soaps, sewing kits, and homemade jellies to the troops from her native Massachusetts. She was only five feet tall and she was unmarried at the time, which made the nursing work she did during the war an "unnatural" occupation for a woman, but she declared, "while our soldiers stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them." In the bloody aftermath of the First Battle of Bull Run Barton realized that much more was needed and she declared her place was "anywhere between the bullet and the battlefield."

"Compassion: The Story of Clara Barton" by Deborah Woodworth gives evidence of much more than the titular quality. The Barton story begins with Clara's First Patient, her brother David, whom she nursed for two years after falling from a barn roof. She opened up a public school for poor children, exhibiting all of the qualities she would evidence during the Civil War when she insisted on going to the front lines to help. After detailing the fine work she did during that war Woodworth goes on to cover the tour of Europe she took where she found out abut the Red Cross and then her efforts to create the American Red Cross when she returned.

This book is illustrated by Leon Baxter and the part I like the best is how Woodworth provides commentary on Barton's life and quotations from the woman herself. In the back of the book there is a Study Guide that focuses not on the facts of her life but the lessons that can be learned from her achievements and her setbacks. The first question asks what qualities we think are important and the list that is provided are all positive qualities (e.g., kindness, courage, perseverance) and then follows up by asking which qualities were most important to Clara Barton. Woodworth even provides the answers to the Study Guide questions (how many books do not?), although there is not a strict notion of what would be "correct." You will also find a nice photograph of Barton on the last page.

As you might suspect, "Compassion: The Story of Clara Barton" is one of a series of similar volumes that use the biographies of famous people, mostly Americans, to emphasize an important value. Other books include: "A Life of Love: The Story of Elizabeth Barrett Browning," "Forgiveness: The Story of Mahatma Gandhi," "Perseverance: The Story of Thomas Alva Edison," "Bravery: The Story of Sitting Bull," "Curiosity: The Story of Marie Curie," and "Dreams: The Story of Martin Luther King." When you look over this list note that only one of the subjects is one of those Dead White Males that are currently the bane of the study of history.

The "Must Have" Book On Mentoring

If you can afford just one book on mentoring this is the one to
buy. Kathleen Barton shows her readers how to build a powerful
and lasting mentoring network to move their careers forward. I
particularly appreciate the practical aspects of "Connecting
With Success." For example, the section on Finding Mentors & Networking Contacts shows what to look for in a potential mentor, via a mentor assessment worksheet. In addition it
provides some suggested organizations one can get involved in to connect with potential mentors, clients, or employers. Other chapters provide similar helpful tools to greatly assist the reader in the networking process.

As a lifelong networker and mentor I enthusiastically support
the principles shared in this outstanding book. I highly
recommend "Connecting With Success" to anyone desiring to make mentoring and networking an integral part of their lives!

Well written, provocative, compelling. The best read so far.

I read this book because I was appointed to our company's crisis management team. It prepared me to think about the variety of crises that could impact us, including natural disasters, workplace violence and IT threats. The case studies are fascinating and are from a variety of industries, and the sample crisis plan was easy to follow and adapt to our specific needs. I especially liked the interviews with people who have experienced crisis at their company, as well as reporters and trauma specialists. It's an interdisciplinary approach to a subject most people don't want to think about, and yet if a crisis occurs at your plant, no one wants to be surprised. In the process of preparing our employees, we reviewed about a dozen publications on the subject. Far and away, Barton did the best job of capturing the dynamics of what happens during a crisis, how to prepare and minimize damage, and how to recover. I'd recommend the book to those both experienced with risk management, crisis communication and environmental/legal aspects of incident management.

A Beautiful, Sad Book
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

Crawford Barton, (1943-1993) was born in fundamentalist Georgia and spent some time in Atlanta before migrating to the West Coast, where he obviously came into his own, both as an artist and a gay man. In this book of beautiful photographs he captures that halcyon time in San Francisco, never to be repeated, after Stonewall and before the assassination of Harvey Milk and then the plague of AIDS. As the title so aptly says, it was a time of hope, but also of innocent abandon, of a newly won sexual and political freedom when anything was possible. There are photographs here of Harvey Milk, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the young Sal Mineo in a garish 70's coat and wide tie. There are also many photos here of Gay Pride parades, photos of people getting ready for the parade and having a great time afterwards. While there is much laughter here, we cannot forget that many of these individuals, including Barton and his lover Larry Lara, whom he photographed extensively, in a few years would be sick and dying but taking care of their own, showing strength and courage that made us all proud to be gay Americans.

This remains one of my favorite books of photography. If you do not know about it, you owe it to yourself to find a copy somewhere. It's a beautiful, sad book and should always remain in print.

The most comprehensive book on uveitis
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-11
There are shorter and easier books to read than this one. The problem is after reading them you still know very little about uveitis. Foster's book is the most comprehensive review on uveitis today. It should be a required reading for all ophthalmologists planning to specilalize in retina and uveitis. I bought this book on Amazon 3 years ago and come back to it with pleasure every time finding it more useful and practical than any other uveitis literature I have.

This book is entertaining for parents and children. I get a good chuckle out of it everytime we read it. It's a great bedtime book, and is also educational because it introduces the different names of the dinosaurs at the end of the book. Mom now knows the difference between stegasaurus and kentrosaurus!

A Wonderful Book for Educators
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-25
I have used this great book in the San Diego State and Wayne State university teacher education programs. It's a wonderful opening to an active, participatory method in teaching social studies. And it is a good reminder to practitioners about what history is, how it is constructed, and who it serves. Students at all levels enjoyed "Doing History." Those looking for ways to promote social agency along with a good grasp of the theory behind historical work will do well with this fine text.

An excellent companion to Eckhoff
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-06
John Barton has written a very worthwhile reference book on dust explosions. It is not a book to replace Rolf Eckhoff's "Dust Explosions in the Process Industries", rather, it is a companion. Dust explosions are complex and those of us who work in the field would agree that there is much about them that is not well understood. Barton has given the subject a new look and particularly for those of us in the USA, a useful insight into the logic and approach of our European colleagues. The logic diagrams alone are worth the price of the book. There is more meat in his treatment of suppression systems than I have seen anywhere else in print. The discussion of vent sizing is excellent and I happen to agree with Barton that the FMRC model has advantages over the others and should be more widely avialable. In addition to vent sizing there is also a very useful discussion of related supplementary design considerations. Barton also covers propagation between linked vessels in a very thorough manner. The illustrations are clear, the photos support the text well and are very useful. The book is well organized, well researched, and easy to use. Highly recommended.
