A historically interesting work on fishes of North America.

In this volume from 1902, Jordan and Evermann synthesize good biology with both US Fish and Wildlife data on commericial catches and advice on fishing for various species. The book contains great artwork by A. Radclyffe Dugmore, including B&W photographs and a number of color plates. A color plate of an Eastern Brook Trout at the start of the book is stunning, to say the least. The book is a fascinating find.

Complete review about creative embroidery
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-11
If I have to keep only one book about embroidery, I'll choose this one !
It supposes though that you know how to make the different stitches, it is not a dictionnary : it is about composition and color, how to prepare original backgrounds, the use of the stitches both hand and machine. Good review of fabrics and threads and how to marry them according to your goal.
Very inspirationnal pictures and close-up.
It opens you the doors of creativity.

Book Inspired Me to Take Care of Myself

The book does not quite make you able to not need an occasional Chiropractic adjustment, but gives some self care tools that release tensions that make vertebra move out of alignment. You can balance both sides of the body and sometimes have the vertebra fall into alignment. Meanwhile, the exercises are safe to do so that you will not get worse (never try to push it). These exercises helped me to form my own set of self care exercises (neural net repatterning). I found Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, Chi Kung, and Gentle Restorative Hatha Yoga also helpful as well as various healing modalities like Cranial Sacral work.

Becoming Women of Purpose

Ruth Barton's study is an excellent resource for Christian women of all ages and stages. She guided me through a personal and scriptural discovery of God's unique purpose for my life using a pleasant variety of old and new testament teachings along with probing questions on my real life experiences, feelings, and beliefs. This study is similar in format to those by author/teacher Cynthia Heald. Unlike other studies of this type, Ms. Barton soaks in scripture passages to communicate her points; I never got the sense that we were skipping around the Bible. I particularly enjoyed the studies of Esther and Moses, developing a personal purpose statement, and discovering the value God sees in my life circumstances.

I did the study on my own, and found many mornings I couldn't wait to get to it! I completed it in less than a month, and plan to use the materials in a group setting this fall. The guide also has a strong Leader's Section in the back that undergirds every chapter with selective "deeper dive" support.

POWERFUL & COMPELLING -- PROMISES KEPT...
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-20
...those promises to which the quality of Marlin Barton's previously-published short fiction (see his short story collection THE DRY WELL) alluded. All of them have been kept, and beautifully, in this, his first novel. A BROKEN THING is the story - stories, actually - of an extended family, the joys and sorrows, pleasures and pains the various members enjoy, endure and inflict upon each other and themselves. What makes it so compelling - and I dare you to turn away from it once you begin - is that, as others have noted elsewhere, one of these people (or ALL of them) could be us. There is an 'everyman' quality to each of the characters so vividly drawn here - and yet at the same time they are each resoundingly individual, painfully and delightfully human. These could be the people next door or down the hall - or across the dinner table.

Barton's vision and experiences of growing up and living in the American South resonate clearly, long after the book is read and put away. The life passages down which these characters walk, the dreams they dare to dream (and ache to let go), the ties that bind them and wedge them apart, the loves that make and break them, are made as real by the author's prose as anyone you can reach out and touch. None of them are perfect souls - they never come across as the false inventions of a writer attempting to please everyone - but there are things about each and every one of them that are admirable, even if they have to wrong others and themselves on the road to finding their way.

As the story progresses, not only are we treated to the exhilarating experience of getting to know these amazing people - we are privileged to see them get to know, to understand, each other, to learn to live with and appreciate their differences, and to come to know themselves as well. All of this 'education' is the stuff of life, of growing older - and, hopefully, wiser - and rarely have I seen it presented in such an intelligent and moving manner. This is the mark of a writer who not only excels at his craft (his use of multiple points-of-view is very skillful, and suits the novel perfectly), but one who cares for the people he grew up with, indeed for all those with whom he shares the world. He respects them - and his characters - for what they are, for what they have to offer each other, for their place in the scheme of things.

Writing like this is a treat - I can't recommend this novel (or his short story collection) highly enough, and I can't wait to read more.

This book is very informative

This book is great because it discusses the family roles at different points in time. It will go from diagnosis, to treatment, remission, and reoccurence and describe the changes of the roles depending on different family structures such as a single parent with an ill child, etc. This book has graphs and genograms that help to illustrate the changes that occur. I think this book is good for people who are giving therapy to a family with cancer involved and for people who are interested in different case studies and family dynamics.
