A fast moving murder mystery, which is set in 57AD and involves a second, fictitious plot to kill the apostle Paul by the same forty involved in the true Biblical incident (Acts 23:12-14).

The mixture between an event set in Paul's time and our modern conveniences, such as sports cars and luxurious yachts, works well and is a lot of fun.

On the quest to find the murderous assassinn, the "Falcon", we will be taken around some of the restaurants such as the "Burnt offering" and "Naboth's Vineyard", venues with, at times, very spicy reputations throughout all Judea.

well i thought that the book was good, and even though it was introduced to me in high school, i think that maybe it is for the more mature crowd. if you can get passed the text then you will really enjoy the book. it is best to read the book along with its footnotes. not only is it a little easier on the reader, but it is also more enjoyable when you can actually understand what it is you are reading. but over all the book was excellent. i think of it as one of marlowe's greatest works.

I originally read this book 30 years ago when it first was published in paperback. At that time I was a teenager and bought it at the local grocery store!!! I read the cover about Barbara Quinn's struggle with heroin addiction and prostitution and was intruiged. Boy, what I read was beyong shocking, especially for a virginal teenage girl in 1972 or '73.

The story, of a young, troubled Jewish woman in the 1950's who gets caught up in drugs, prostitution, violent lesbian relationships was pretty heady stuff. Barbara Quinn wrote this book with unflinching honesty, leaving no stone unturned she tells of robbing people and assaulting people to get money for her drug habit. How she leaves her young son with her parents while she goes to have lesbian sex and get stoned. Her multiple stints in prison are detailed as her ultimate victory over her drug dependency. At the end of the book "Cookie" aka Barbara Quinn seemed to have conquer her demons and was working to help other drug addicts in New York City. I would love to know whatever ultimately became of her and her young son, I hope she continued to do well and I hope she is alive and well somewhere with lots of grandkids.

I lost this book years ago and looked for it forever and was happy to find it once again on Amazon. This book is very graphic in it's decription of sexual situations and drug use, and is not for children!!!

DEATH OF A JOYCE SCHOLAR, A PETER McGARR MYSTERY.|THE

The best of the Peter McGarr series.

If you don't know Irish detective Peter McGarr, this terrific novel from 1989 is a great introduction! Where else but Dublin might you find a James Joyce scholar dead, and McGarr and the Murder Squad of the Garda Siochana reading Ulysses, and occasionally Samuel Beckett in an effort to understand what led to his death? Including brief quotations from Ulysses in this novel, Gill locates the action in places which are significant in Ulysses, talks about Finnegans Wake (Penguin Modern Classics), and even discusses "the novel of competence," represented by Joyce, as opposed to "the novel of incompetence," represented by Samuel Beckett, making these esoteric subjects comprehensible and intriguing.

Dublin throbs with life here, in the pubs, on the streets, in the university, and at galleries, the Shelbourne Hotel, and St. Michan's church. The action is robust, with many fights, fractures, and a few hospitalizations, as McGarr and his detectives concentrate more on justice than on the niceties of procedure. The characters we know from earlier novels are further developed here (and continue into later novels).

As always, Gill includes lively and wonderfully droll conversations--the teasing and byplay one expects of close and caring relationships--both at home and at the Garda station. And when Det. Hugh Ward and Det. Ruthie Bresnahan finally discover each other, one of the highlights of this novel, their scenes become both hilarious and steamy. Gill's excellent satire (the Beautiful People at a book-launching), his wonderful sense of the absurd (the murder victim's wife bringing the victim home, laying him in bed, and contacting McGarr only after he starts to "go off"), and his uncanny ability to create quirky and likable characters make this one of the all-time best novels in this remarkable series.

This book has a realistic view of depression and can help anyone who has a variety of symptoms from low self-esteem to not having a desire to eat. It makes one think highly of oneself as a person and human being. This is the best self-help book I have ever read!

If you like mysteries, you'll love this book

I've been reading Sally Gunning's Peter Bartholomew mysteries from the beginning with "Hot Water". From the start this book draws you in. Once I started I couldn't put it down. Once again Peter is married to his former ex-wife Connie. It doesn't take long before they're embroiled in yet another murder, this time involving someone near and very dear to both their hearts. Sarah Abrew, who is 88 years old, claims she committed the crime, but Peter has plenty of doubts. He thinks he knows who did it, but it's how to prove it. All the evidence points to Sarah. This book, as well as the other Peter Bartholomew books, are set on a "Nantuckett" type island. If you like your mysteries set on Cape Cod, you might also like a series of books written many years ago, but still in print, by Phoebe Atwood Taylor called "The Asey Mayo" books. These are also excellent and readily available. I say read this book, soon.

All Jo Berry's books are awesome. They break down children's dilemmas and challenges into bite-sized steps and help them understand what's going on even if the solution takes time to begin working completely in their lives.
