Susanna Gregory is the pseudonym of a Cambridge academic who was previously a coroner's officer. Her series of mediaeval mysteries have gained a formidable following. This book is the second in the series and introduces the physician Matthew Bartholomew to the reader. There are now a number of books in the series and they are always eagerly awaited by the author's fans.

Besides practising medicine Matthew is also a teacher at a Cambridge University and his sometimes unorthodox treatment of his patients draws accusations of heresy from his more traditional, but less skilled colleagues.

Intense arguments on the subject of theology appears to be the main motive for a string of brutal murders among the various religious order in Cambridge. But Matthew Bartholomew thinks it is more likely to be the baser instincts of his fellow men that are the more likely cause of the violence. Once again his powers of deduction are called upon to solve the murders himself.

Susanna Gregory's seventh and latest murder mystery - 'An Order for Death' - shows a growing consolidation of the political umbrage that encloses Cambridge. More and more of the previous novels are tied in, evidence and narration from them used to complete this mystery. For now, it does not matter, but should the author continue in this way we may get a new story where reading of earlier installments are a pre-requisite.
This latest has Matthew's latest sleuthing finding him firmly paired with the Senior Proctor, Michael, investigating the multiple deaths of the young but brilliant upand coming nominalist Raricus, Kyrkus, his and his junior proctor Walcote. The mystery uses several potential motives behind the murders, from philosophy to desperation to both insitigate and conclude each death.
Gregory has done a fair amount of research into the patristic debate between nominalism and realism that gripped the universities of Oxford and Cambridge (providing the link to the former with the arrival of Michael's political nemesis and his faithful follower, Richard Stanmore) so that intellectual debate is used as both motive and focus for this excellent novel.
We are introduced to multiple conspiracies in this novel with Walcote's shadier meetings at St Radegast's (a nunnery masquerading as a brothel which provides an excellent additional plotline for Mathilde and Matthew to delve into) revealing a new political powerbase in Cambridge which gives Gregory the chance to truly bring Michael into play as a somewhat different sleuth in his own right. Portrayed as fiercely intellectual, he is somewhat impetuous and still requires Bartholomew's quiet intropsection to solve the murders that begin to pile up. From the initial murder during a riot, all the way to the riot at the nominalist debate where we reach a conclusion, `An Order For Death' is firmly settling Susanna Gregory amongst the elite of murder mystery authors, not the least through her wonderful desciption of life in thirteenth century Cambridge. I look forward to many more installments.

entertaining police procedural romance

Review Date: 2005-05-18
When her spouse of ten years is arrested and convicted of selling illegally obtained movies of naked neighbors, Sophie Mazaretti divorces Nick "the Dick" as the media dubs him and moves from Philadelphia to New Bern, North Carolina to start over. However, peace eludes the kindergarten teacher as people visit her claiming that Nick owed them money or are seeking revenge for having been filmed without permission by the peeping camera tom.

Working in the backyard of her new home, Sophie finds a corpse of a woman with the tattoo hate on her arm. She calls the cops who act nasty to her until her brother Joey arrives to run interference. Soon afterward, Detective Gray "Mr. Wonderful" Evans takes over the investigation. Her husband finds her, followed by the mob and the Feds, with Gray trying to keep her safe while they fall in love. First he must insure she is safe because even if the brave South Philly transplant is tough, Nick's associates are thugs demanding his wife pay his debts.

SOPHIE'S LAST STAND is an entertaining police procedural romance starring a delightful street smart heroine and the cop who not only wants to insure her safety, wants her. The story line is driven by Sophie's struggles to start over after the debacle her ex-spouse caused her, but no one from his past will leave her alone. Fans of romantic suspense will appreciate this fine second chance at love and life, but not necessarily in that order.

"Like A Fish Needs A Bicycle!!!"

"Like A Fish Needs A Bicycle!!!" is the mantra that sassy Sophie Mazzaratti used when it came to men. She is done with men after she get rid of her sleazy ex. Well, at least she thought she was done with men. Her mind is changed though when she makes a move in order to get a fresh start in New Bern, North Carolina. One sexy detective named Gray Evans is making her rethink her stance on men. Will he be around though at the end of her trials and tribulations? See, trouble has followed Sophie to her new home. Dead bodies, exploding cars, drive by shootings, and break-ins, the FBI, and oh yeah...the mob have also arrived. Well, Sophie has had enough and she won't take it any more. With help from her family, her dad's friends, and yummy Gray things will be put to rights...right?

Sophie is a heroine for today's lady!!! She can take on the bullies by herself (and innocent plumbers as well but you have to read the book), but still have the good sense to know a good thing when she sees it. In this case our hero Gray. Gray on the other hand is sexy, strong, but not in an over powering way! In other words a perfect couple. Ms. Bartholomew has added a new twist to the romantic suspense genre. This story is penned in 1st person POV, with laugh out loud moments, quirky secondary characters, and slowly built sensuality that is toe curling. In other words, this is a book you won't want to overlook!

Stella Valoccohi is a great gal, I enjoyed her sass, strong character, and showing woman can do their stuff. I laughed while she kicked butts, or with her smart mouth. I liked the way Nancy Bartholomew writes her stories. I wish she could write them faster, I love her books.

fun private investigative romance

Review Date: 2005-01-11
In Chester County, Pennsylvania, private sleuths Stella Valoccchi and her former fiancé Jake Carpenter lie in a pigsty waiting to reposses a toy Santa, a sleigh and reindeer from drug kingpin Joey "Smack" Spagnazi, the self proclaimed Santa. A shotgun blast sends Stella and Jake fleeing with a partial load that will have to satisfy their client the Lifetime Novelty Company. The toy Santa flies off their truck as there was no time to tie it down causing the vehicle chasing them to crash. Stella takes Jake, who was sho,t to the hospital.

Mia Lange wants Stella and company to find her brother who, like her, was adopted years ago. She explains that her biological sister, adopted by a third family, contacted her with the need of a kidney transplant, but Mia is not a match. Though Jake is ready to go to hell for the beautiful Mia, Stella thinks something just is not right about the case, but the money is good. Meanwhile Joey Smack and his thugs stalk Stella, her family, and Jake.

The sequel to STELLA GET YOUR GUN is a fun private investigative romance that stars a wild dysfunctional but likable cast with Stella thinking she is the lead. The investigation is cleverly handled so that Stella gains an inch but loses a foot with each clue. Jake wants to be more than just her employee as he wants to be her partner in life, but knows Valocchi is suspicious of everyone especially Jake perhaps because she is a former cop. Nancy Bartholomew gets plenty of readers with her Stella Gets New Jersey tales.

Unlike many reference books that cover similar material, this book is not too large, heavy or cumbersome to actually use. The paper quality is nice. I love that I can get it in paperback so it's affordable for a reference book. The maps are excellent - I often scan them to show to my class as they're better than the maps in their textbooks. The text provides a synopsis of the era and is just the right length and detail level. Oh, and it even has a thorough index - a must in a reference book but is often substandard in other works.

I only wish there was a more recent edition!

simple, interesting, useful.

Although this book is currently out of print I wholeheartedly reccomend that you get it if you can find one. For a brief overview of world history one could not find a more useful document. The narrative is at times quite insightful for such a broad range text, and the graphics are invaluable if you ever need to explain these points to anyone (including yourself).

Multivariate Analysis Made Clear
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-18
This is book provides a great introduction to multivariate analysis; including cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling, principal component analysis, and factor analysis. From all the introductory books available, this is by far the clearest and most appropriate for people without strong mathematical or statistical background. However, the examples in the book might be of interest to experienced analysts as well. Chapters start with a theoretical section and contain in-depth examples of multivariate analysis with real data. The examples are fascinating. For instance, by using multivariate methods to analyse different details of persian archers, it may be possible to conclude that they were created by different people.

The first cookbook I ever bought , and still one of the best
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-17
I discovered this cookbook as a teenager, bought it, and have used it ever since. It is a beautiful book, with numerous colored photos, and anecdotes preceding each recipe (each in a different colored text, adding great visual appeal). And some of my all-time favorite and best recipes come from this book -- the strawberry meringue torte (the world's best dacquoise), pecan roll (I usually use toasted filberts), Spanish omelet, ratatouille (better than any other I've tried), broiled stuffed tomatoes, etc. The only caveat is that the author is a professional chef (former chef to Jacqueline Kennedy), so she's not always nit-picking about absolute precision in recipes. Although the baked goods seem fail-safe, I had to double the amount of lentils to get a thick lentil soup. This book is as good for reading (e.g., what the Kennedy children enjoyed from her kitchen, Billy Rose's favorite cheesecake, how the German-born author discovered that even Americans who hate turkey demand it for Thanksgiving, etc.) as for cooking. When it was in print, I gave copies to almost all of my friends; now that it is available used on Amazon, I will have to see who missed out. Everyone, without fail, has loved this book. If you like to cook or read about cooking, this book is definitely for you.

Memoirs of Frank H. Bartholomew

Review Date: 2007-06-23
As reporter, war correspondent and president of United Press International, Frank Bartholomew has covered major news events form the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake through the Pacific battles of World War II to the "fail safe" patrols of modern American Bombers. In his recollections of more than two generations of journalism, the famous figures of the world march through these pages of his Memiors like shadowy giants of the past brought to life ... General Douglas MacArthur, Chiang Kai Shek, Winston Churchill, Omar Bradley, and Duchess of Windsor, William Randolph Hearst, Lord Mountbatten, Ina Clair, Charles Scripps, Roy Howard.

Who else has been on board the USS Missouri to witness the surrender of the Japanese and also written movie captions for Gloria Swanson? Who else has done his part to cool the tempestuous temperament of actress Ina Clair and also received the Roy Howard Award for superlative achievements in journalism? Who else has published his own newspaper in his early teens and gone on to become president of an international news service?

These pages record milestones in journalism from the telegraph key with its Prince Albert can as resonator to the astonishing transmission of news by satellite.
