Scholarly treatment of a controversial issue
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-19
Since the nineteeenth century, the absolute integrity of the text of the Pentateuch as the letter-for -letter accurate revelatory message of the Divine to Moses on Mount Sinai has been an article of faith for Orthodox Judaism. Prof. Levy shows with meticulous scholarship that from early Rabbinic times onwards, through the Middle Ages and even into more modern times many rabbinic scholars acknowledged and discussed the variations in the Masoretic and other texts of the 5 Books ( particularly in the context of the accuracy of the Scrolls used in synagogue). What was commonplace discussion in early times turned into sensation in our own times; what was never at issue turned into heresy, and, conversely, a view that was never espoused turned into an article of faith. The book is a superbly documented window onto the history of Judaism, and on to the history of the transmission of texts, with restrained but pointed relevance to some contemporary causes celebre - eg Bible Codes, whose basic premise this books elegantly demolishes. Should be in every theological and Jewish library!

An actor's life

Genre: Autobiography

Are you interested in the real life stories of real live actors? If you are and are particularly interested in British actors, you'll certainly enjoy David's story. It is a book about significant events and people in his acting career of almost fifty years including theatre, film and television.

The basic format of this autobiography is somewhat of a journal which he started in 1998 when he agreed to be in the Bill Kenwright production of Funny Money which toured for 16 weeks and is described as "The Tour from Hell." Scattered throughout this journal are flashbacks about his childhood experiences while touring Europe in the play Titus Andronicus with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. David was fourteen at the time, and it was the summer of 1957 when Peter Brook's bloody production had people fainting in their seats.

David starred as Frankie Abbott in the hit television sitcoms Please, Sir! and Fenn Street Gang in his early twenties. If I were a theatre goer and more familiar with British entertainment, I'm sure this book would have been more meaningful to me. As I am familiar with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, I found the flashbacks about the group's tour through Europe to be of particular interest.

David Barry is a very talented man and his writing is a natural extension of his talents. The autobiography is well-written, entertaining and I'm certain will appeal to his fans. I do hope he will write another book with more personal information about himself-his talents, how he studied and prepared, his goals, his family, the problems and realities of living an actor's life, and how one finds the faith that there will be another play . . . when the tour has finished.

In addition to Flashback, the author has written Each Man Kills. Thank you, David, for sharing part of your life with us.

No need for words...

Having seen most of the photoessay/story/travel fly fishing books of the past 10-15 years, I have to say that this one is by far the best. The book is filled with world-class photos from some of the most beautiful fly fishing locations, both freshwater and salwater. When reading this book, you are not longing for any long fishing stories (most of which are published earlier somewhere else anyway) and you don't want to see a list of guides or lodges (you can find them easily from the web). The pictures with short comments are enough. I have seen some books that have five excellent shots from a particular place, but this one has tens for each of the destinations. Unbelievable book. I have to buy a bunch of these as gifts for my friends, for fly fishermen and for non-fly fishermen alike. Then I will pay a visit to my bank manager and hope that he will still loan my some money, because after getting this book, I have already started to pack my rods and reels...

I am a police officer in the crime scene area and this book impressed me. It was recently published so the material is not outdated and it is VERY well written. I have much more expensive books written by Barry Fisher, this is an affordable, current well done book on how crime scene works.

The best book on ontology - ever
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-26
With the promise of the impending, "Semantic Web", the word "ontology" has been bandied about quite a bit by people who really have no idea what it means. The dictionary is of no help here, as it typically defines ontology as something like, "a theory of being". For those who know, and more importantly for those who *think* they know, the word has experienced a bizarre duality and evolution of meaning as the progenators of web-based information system have used and abused the term. This book contains a collection of articles by experts - scholars and practitioners in philosophy, linguistics and computer science - that address the real meaning of ontology, what it means to specify and use ontologies, the promise of ontology-enabled information interchange, and the influence 2000 years of analytic metaphysics can have on real world engineering problems.

This book is quite unique in that the collection of authors, such as Barry Smith, Sergei Nirenburg, and Nicola Guarino, to name but a few, run the gamut from philosophers to engineers; such a diverse collection of researchers are rarely seen together, and the mix yields a fascinating range of ideas.
