We are 6 kids and 2 dogs and for sure the dogs get treated better than us. This book is so funny and that is because it is so true. My parents seem to love our dogs better than us. They buy them toys, birthday cards, have parties and give them steak when we eat hamburgers. This is a must book for everyone who has a pet of any kind. Loved it.

This is a wonderful book by a British Funeral Director. Even though funerals are serious business, even there you can find moments of mirth that even the deceased would appreciate. I loved this book and highly reccomend it!

Dorothy's Irreverence

I enjoyed reading Dorothy Parker's view of life which was colored by her childhood in New York. It's almost a defense of hers against the lack of love she received and the wrong choices she made during the speakeasy era. My mother was a "flapper" and this book helped me pick up on the spirit of those times. It's hard to tell which words of Dorothy's I should take seriously and which are part of her wonderful sense of humor.

Excellent collection from a superb writer.

"Down Here in the Dream Quarter" contains some of Barry Malzberg's final stories from the period (c.1967-1975) when he was writing some of the most unusual, literate, technically virtuosic and highly personal fiction of the post-war era. Malzberg, who had aspirations (and certainly the talents) for a career in "serious" fiction, turned to science fiction during the mid- to late-60s after numerous rejections from literary magazines. He went on to write over 76 novels and 300 short stories (not all of them SF) in a creative white heat that ended when he realized that, despite this formidable streak of artistry and prolificity, he remained unknown outside SF and maligned and misunderstood within it. What remains is a body of work that is as uncompromising and challenging, but ultimately rewarding, as one is likely to find. That Malzberg had been forced to write paperback originals and fall into obscurity when he had the gifts to be winning National Book Awards and heading PEN is a situation with implications not lost on the author; it is, indeed, downright Malzbergian.

Which brings us to "Down Here in the Dream Quarter." This volume features several late stories and two scathing essays (in addition to an illuminating preface) and is a fine introduction to Malzberg's short fiction. Each story includes a short introduction by the author. "The Best of Barry N. Malzberg" remains his finest collection of short works, but "Dream Quarter" is a more than respectable anthology and demonstrates not only the understandable bitterness the author felt at the end of his SF career, but also the fact that, in terms of ambition and skill, Malzberg was lightyears ahead of all but a handfull of his peers.

Highly recommended.

Barry Minkow--one of my heroes

Barry Minkow is a symbol of hope to me. He has been through it all. He "shot himself in the foot" and brought a lot of pain on himself and his family but was able to turn his life around in an amazing way.

Anything he writes is well worth reading and I will look out for future publications that he authors.

Midnight, not a... never mind! I read this book quite a few years ago, but I read it about fifteen times. I really enjoyed how simple it is. I know I am being childish, but if you compare this book to the Bram Stoker novel, you will see that you don't get any 'big' words in this copy. This copy is of course very short, but expressive! The story is in this book with all of the details (the grisly ones too)! Also, about the book: The big writting makes it easy to read, and the art is amazing. I even asked my grandmother is she could draw the old Count in the second color picture! The images that marked me the most, was Vampire Lucy. It looks so real! Except for the fact that she is a vampire... Anyway, I love it mucho! A must read for those who don't understand Bram and his complications! Check out the other books in this collection too!

Do you want to understand why kids take drugs?

I am studying a Masters Degree and have read this book as part of my research. I am now ordering it because I want my own copy. Though this book is academic in its structure, I found it a thoroughly enjoyable and insightful read. The world of drug taking and adolescents is filled with mythology and fear. For so many parents the ultimate fear is to find out that your child is taking drugs. Reading this book will provide a deeper understanding of this adolescent behavior. It does not discount the risks or discard the validity of parental fear, but rather provides a broad and realistic insight into the young people who take drugs as part of their social world.
