A review of the great ones - Mahatma Ghandi to Madonna, Jesus Christ to Jimmy Carter from a Non-American and Non-European veiwpoint. Great bits on Australians as Jones is a great Australian thinker, but includes Asia and the Pacific as well. A great reference tool. Do your best to find it.

Hockey + Dinosaurs = GREAT READING for 3-6 year olds

I felt like I won the parenting lottery when I found this book that combined two of my son's favorite topics, hockey and dinosaurs. The story is simple and well written with a great rhythm that makes it fun to read aloud to your child(ren). The pictures are beautiful and very clever, at center ice there is a version of the NHL logo that reads "DHL". All in all, this is a great addition to any young hockey fan's library.

Dippers is a pleasant picturebook for young readers about a hot summer in 1912, when fanciful creatures that author Barbara Nichol calls "dippers" came up from the Don River. The Dippers are most curious beings indeed, at first glance resembling cat-sized shrews with wings. Barry Moser's full-page illustrations in soft tones enhance Nichol's inquisitive prose making Dippers a pleasure for young readers who have just graduated from easy-reader picturebooks and are ready to try something with slightly longer and with more complex sentences.

A great book about the "Greatest Race"
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-10
When two men raced each other from Mill Valley, California to Stinson Beach (then known as Willow Camp) in 1904, they probably never realized that their race would evolve into more than just a race; it would practically become a cult following. While only a little over 7 miles, the Dipsea Race is known for its steep slopes, long stairways, dangerous terrain, and gorgeous scenery, as well as its handicapping system which, in the past, has resulted in 69-year-old men and 9-year-old girls winning the race.

This book, by Barry Spitz, does a wonderful job of chronicling the amazing history of the second oldest race in the United States. While much of the book focuses on the actual races, one of the things I liked the best about the book was the short paragraphs telling interesting, sometimes humorous, stories about each of the races. The book also includes a fold-out, full-color topographical map of the course.

If I could make any improvement to the book, I'd include more photos and make at least some of them in color. While the photos inthe book now are nice, they don't come close to conveying the actual beauty of the race.

This is definitely a book for anyone who knows and loves the Dipsea Race(like me!) or anyone who is interested in the history of cross-country running in the United States.

Great for ALL Writers

I facilitate a writer's group, Deadwood Writers, teach writing, and strive to live a writer's life. Of the many books on writing, this book is a must have if you want to develop or fine-tune your craft. Barry Lane and Bruce Ballenger crafted a book that guides you through 40 days of writing. The techniques used are varied. Setting aside 30 minutes a day, yes you can do that, each day begins with a fastwrite (7-10 minutes), reflection on the writing + examples by the authors, and a final writing activity. The authors open up creative intelligence avenues through webbing, photography, and other strategies that gives the reader-writer varied ways to start and/or deepen their writing.

The book addresses challenges to writing, the inner critic, as does other authors: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamont, Breathing in Breathing Out by Ralph Fletcher. The critical difference for writers is that you write. It's not just philosophy. The book is experiential so that philosophy is put to practice.

I found added value by using one journal to do each day's tasks. This enabled me to review previous work, which the authors have you do.

Get the book, a journal or notebook, or napkin scraps (heavy duty type), a pen and experience a 40 day journey that will have you writing in the moment and beyond day forty-one.

In 141 pages Karen Kreider tells the story of Disney's Aladdin and goes beyond it. Supported by full color images directly taken from the film. A recommendation for any Disney lover. Great way to introduce the story of Aladdin to anyone who wants to learn more about the movie but can't watch it.

Comprehensive manual for getting through a difficult period

Review by William Phenn for Reader Views (3/06)

"The Divorcing Father's Manual" is the latest work by Dr. Barry B. Frieman Ed.D.
Dr. Frieman has been an Educator for over 34 years teaching graduate and undergraduate classes. He is currently both a university professor and a licensed clinical social worker.
In the course of his social work, Dr. Frieman has dealt with many families going through the turmoil of divorce. Among his many prestigious credentials is his doctorate from the Institute for Child Study at the University of Maryland. Dr. Frieman himself is married with two grown daughters. He has spent most of his working life dealing with children and divorce.

"The Divorcing Father's Manual: 8 Steps to Help You Survive and Thrive" does not have all the answers within its 181 pages, just the important ones. This book will help you through the eight most important areas of divorce.

1. Surviving the Initial Assault. How to survive when she walks out. What to do about the guilt, pain and stress, when your wife of many years tells you she wants a divorce.
2. Disengaging From Your Old Love. Here Barry tells you how to let go of the dream. Action steps to starting a new life.
3. Working for a Nonadversarial Divorce. This step describes the process, advantages and disadvantages of a nonadversarial divorce.
4. Assessing Your Role as Father and Making a Fathering Plan. Single Father, what do you have to expect? What kind of Father were you when married, what about your father? These are just some of the questions Dr. Frieman asks in the Father's Inventory.
5. Understanding Children. What do you say when your preschool child says, mommies boyfriend is nicer than you.
6. Doing It All Alone. In this step, Dr. Frieman discusses what your duties are as a single father; cooking, sewing, braiding little girl's hair or getting ready for school.
7. Your Ex-Wife. The business like relationship you should have, how to defuse feelings and learning to interact with your Ex.
8. Starting a Dating Life. Are you ready, meeting people, involving children with the women you are dating, this very important step and many more are discussed here.

My hat is off to Dr. Barry Frieman. He has managed to write a very comprehensive and adult manual for getting through one of the most difficult periods in a man's life.
"The Divorcing Father's Manual" is both informative and very entertaining. It is a must read for all Fathers that are either in the process of divorce or have already been through it. I give it my highest rating, an A+.
