Beautiful Coffee Table Book

If you're looking for an art piece, this is the book for you. I was hoping for a little more instruction. It is a beautiful book and I would probably buy it anyway even if I had known how little practical knowledge is actually offered. Most of the instruments could probably be figured out by a fairly competent ceramist, but a beginner would be completely lost.

I was disappointed not to be given cross-section diagrams of some of the wind instruments; I would have liked some more and more specific technical info on creating a clay xylophone and/or marimba; I'd like to know more about stretching drum heads and stringing/playing the bowed instruments and harps. That said, I can probably figure it out, but that's why I bought this book. To help me figure it out.

Conversely, in the section in which Hall does give step by step procedures, he includes simple steps that even the 6-year-olds in my pottery classes know how to do. Nothing about firing techniques or the rest of the stuff ceramists seem to feel obligated to include in a book written for beginners, though, for which I am grateful. Any beginning potter needs a general instruction text (or a good class), so I'm not sure why specialty authors feel it necessary to include basic steps and then, for want of space, leave out stuff you'd really like to know.

Sorry for whining so much. I really love the book and have been reading it word for word (some of it is pretty silly kind of psycho-babble, so you've been warned) to glean every bit of info. It's spangled with little stars of knowledge and I don't want to miss any of them.

As others have said, this isn't really a studio book. It's too nice, and hasn't got all that much practical information anyway, unless you've never made an ocarina or can't figure out on your own how to make a goblet drum. (Thanks for the instructions on fitting the head, though.) It will give you loads of inspiration, and if you understand the different ways of making a sound, which are really explained quite adequately, you'll be able to figure out at least a rudimentary model of most of the instruments shown.

I'm facinated by ceramic music and this book had instruments that I didn't know existed. It is well written and very informative. I also enjoyed listening to the music CD. If you're into ceramics, this book is a good buy!

I first made my purchase because I had a couple of my photos included in the book. But when I opened it up, it took my breath away! Not only are the photos well done and well laid out, but there is historical information about clay instruments, as well as information about currently made clay instruments. There are also pages of 'how to' for those so inclined. There is information about various artists. I thought it was of such value that I have purchased a copy for the Bethany College Art Department's ceramic instructor. There is a wealth of knowledge in this one book! I highly recommend owning one! Kudo's to Barry Hall!

This book is to own. It's at home in the studio, on the coffee table or in the historian's library. It's well written, informative (with some how make ceramic instrument techniques), exhaustivly researched with magnificient photographs of clay instruments, both ancient and new, of every type. I would never loan my copy for fear of not seeing it again.

It won't take you long to finish this book of vignettes that weave together into a complete story. Yet, it is a book of incredible wisdom and courage, seen through the eyes of a young girl who lives in a neighborhood that is settling in after "white flight." Through the narrator's perspective, Lynda Barry palpably demonstrates the impact of racial integration and tension via the friendship between a young white girl and young black girl. Is such a friendship possible, when you have a "no Negroes allowed inside" rule at your house? Or when you visit the projects with your friend, and a boy calls her "Unca Tom" merely for being with a white girl? And what happens when girls grow up and graduate out of grade school?

Lynda Barry has the voice of the young girl down perfectly, expressing the things that young girls think and worry about, including the angst and dreams of fitting in and belonging. Bittersweet and compelling, I highly recommend this simple coming-of-age tale.

Book is great. But Lynda Barry's looks are killing me.

I teach a course on teaching music for children (at the college level). I use this book to get students thinking about the deep ways that music impacts our lives. Situations from family to school music, private to public, and informal to formal are all present, and Barry's wonderful attention to detail brings each to life in a way that make my students talkative.

Of course, I wouldn't use it if it weren't a wonderful novel as well. It is. The story that is told is gripping, and my students love reading it.

Barry just knows how to get into the psyche of kids, adolescents, anyone under the age of 17, it seems. This book is a quick read, but a delicious one. Barry writes her characters' voices in as understated and realistic pieces of life, and she does what she's so good at doing: she puts readers in a space in which they're none too comfortable, and yet they can't seem to shake the familiar feelings of their own childhood horrors and experiences. This book is unsettling and slightly worrisome, and also truthful and wonderful, just as children often are.

A must-read.

This is the book that got me started on my Lynda Barry addiction. I stumbled on to this book by fortuitous accident. It's brilliant. It is simple in its style with a reach deep into the heart of complex feelings and issues. While not as riveting as Cruddy, it is more moving and realistic. I hope Lynda Barry continues to produce work of this quality. One Hundred Demons is also extremely good. Her fiction is great literature on a transcendent level.

I lucked into this book when it came out in 1999; my editor asked me to review it. I was previously unfamilliar with Farrell's work; now I am thrilled to see this book is still in print.

Farrell is a writer's journalist. This is not the sensationalist, info-tainment, "if-it-bleeds-it-leads" garbage you see on Fox News. He goes deep beneath the surface of his story, looking for the larger truths as much as the simple truth. Many of these truths hurt as much as they enlighten. He covers topics ranging from kite-flying to the Hillside Strangler with insight and style. His pieces on serial killers and rape victims are sensitive, yet they pack a serious punch.

This book is much more than a collection of amazing snapshots of recent American history -- it's also literature. No matter what the subject matter, his passion for writing shines through; no matter how gruesome a scene he describes, his style leaves you jubilant.

Barry Farrell died too young, in 1984. This book will keep his memory alive for those who learned from his lapidary prose. I wish I could have been one of his students--but in a way, having read his work, I feel that in a way, I am.

I've been reading with enormous delight this collection of articles by Barry Farrell. It's a posthumous collection by a brilliant writer who died in 1984. What an unexpected thrill it was to discover this book's existence. It helps bring back to life an unfortunately neglected writer. I knew him briefly (too briefly) -- a fine guy. Barry Farrell's bracing journalistic style and humanity take the reader back to a better time in journalism when writers cared deeply about their subject matter.

Immersion journalism at its finest.

Barry Farrell is a name I didn't know before two weeks ago. Barrey Farrell is now a name I won't forget. As a young journalist, I think this book is an essential read for anyone considering a career in the field. But anyone interested in reading great stories that take a smart, comprehensive view of a subject will find just that in this little green book. Farrell is an angel of a writer. But what I admire more is his hard-nosed reporting. After reading some of these stories, for instance "Stalking the Hillside Strangler," it awed me knowing how much footwork had to go into such exquisite work. This book is a clinic on how to report and write, and I will turn to it often for inspiration.

Certainly I'm not an objective reviewer. I attended Barry Farrell's classes at UC Santa Barbara in the 1970s -- and was, I believe, rather a disappointment to him -- but he nonetheless became one of my most important role models as a writer. What I've long regretted, however, was not having more of his writing on my bookshelf. Barry mostly published in magazines, and so it's been hard even for those of us who are devoted to his work to find and collect any significant fraction of his lifetime output. I own and cherish a few aging magazines featuring his writing, but these bits and pieces barely scratch the surface of his 30 fruitful years of shoe-leather journalism. This book, then, is a wonderful and long-overdue development. I had read perhaps a third of these pieces, and was delighted to discover them anew. The other two-thirds of the book was an absolute delight, each page a treasure of flowing language and unerring eye for detail. Of course, it also brought back to my ear Barry's voice, and images of him I'll always carry with me: coffe at the outdoor cafe in front of the library at UC Santa Barbara after class, or the time he cajoled Joan Dideon and John Gregory Dunne into visiting our small class of 12 or 15 students in the English Department's spartan conference room. So, take it from a blatantly partisan -- but completely sincere -- reviewer: buy this book! For heaven's sake, if you love great non-fiction writing -- if you are devoted to writers like Joan Dideon, John McPhee, the non-fiction of Wallance Stegner, and other master wordsmiths of our age -- you will not be disappointed.

I've read this book through and the poetry was perfectly crafted. Dante gives us numerous details of his own imaginative encounter led by Virgil, into the afterlife of man. But I hate where Virgil says "I'll quarrel with you" Virgil!! You don't make threats like that, you miserable wretch!! *Hits Virgil on the face* You ever say that to him again, I'll quarrel with you!!! *Virgil looks with an apology*

I have been put off reading The Divine Comedy for a long while before I finally picked it up off my shelf. I wish that I did not wait so long to take up this work.

The true beauty of the Inferno is the fact that it is both entertaining and intellectually fulfilling. The text has a history of mythology, history, and theology behind it that gives it such depth that the mind is entranced by the thought provoked by its words. Even though such weighty material lies behind Dante's work, it is also very much so entertaining, as it is ultimately an epic which tells a great tale. Because of both of these, the reader is engrossed in a tale which is truly edifying. It is difficult to put the work down because it is such a grand epic, and yet it is also very difficult to read it with out reflecting upon the nature of man.

For those who like me aren't as well versed in history and mythology as a translator like Mandelbaum, the endnotes are especially helpful. Armed with these, the reader is able to embark on a trip which is most fulfilling. I suggest this text to all.

One Of The Better Translations

Dante's Inferno is a truly magnificent piece of art that is deserving of an equally magnificent translation. For those of us who are unable to translate on our own, Allen Mandelbaum does a superb job of it on his own. Having both languages set side by side gives the reader a unique perspective and allows the reader to get a better feel for the flow of the poem.

The notes and asides that are provided are helpful but the essays at the end of each chapter leave something to be desired. If you are simply reading The Inferno for the pleasure of it then this is the version to get. If you are a scholar who is attempting to get a better understanding of Dante and his works than you may be better off finding a different version.

I've read a couple of editions of Dante's "The Divine Comedy," but as far as the "Inferno/Hell" part of the trilogy is concerned, this is the only one I've read for the last half decade.

Alex Mandelbaum, then of the City University of New York, has given us a translation in English that is modern, yet retains the structure that lends the regal, somewhat alien feel of Alighieri's poetry. He sets the stage nicely in his introduction in which he reviews the person of Dante Alighieri and the work about to be presented. Next, Mandelbaum provides us the Cantos from "Inferno" with Alighieri's Italian on the left and his translation on the right. The text is annotated with references to endnotes for those interested. The haunting artwork of Barry Moser accompanies us, along with Dante and Virgil, on our trip through the rings of hell.

At the end of the translation are two articles, "Dante in His Age," a sort of contextual biography, and a critical article entitled "Dante as Ancient and Modern." Finally, there is the endnote material with useful expository information for those inclined to understand Dante's "Inferno" better.

A great translation, but disappointing essays

Let's get to the meat of this book, first: Dante's epic tale of a man's journey through the levels of hell. Mandelbaum's translation is brisk and entertaining--he keeps the translation simple, making this book perfect for students and teachers alike. The great translation helps keep readers in suspense and enthralled.

I was a bit disappointed by the essays, though. I am not an academic--if you are, then good for you. I'm sure you'll make more sense out of Mandelbaum's writing than I did. Me, I'm a student, and I'm looking at this through a student's perspective. The essays were unreadable. Putting it in layman's terms would've been made this book a great asset to have--not only would we have the translated tale, but we'd also have some information on Dante himself, and a couple dissections of his work. Instead, we have the translation, and three other pieces of writing that we can't decipher.

That makes this edition of Dante's "Inferno" a hit-and-miss. If you're in it for the entertainment factor, or want to do your own analysis of his work, then this is for you. If you want to read what Mandelbaum thought about it...then, unless you have the patience and vocabulary of a Foreign Literature professor, you're out of luck.

As of 13 May 2008 I was told by the Revere Academy that it will be another two years before the next edition of this wonderful book will be available....sigh. I worked from this book at a jewelry school in Manhattan and have been searching for it ever since. Another two years for the next edition is going to be way too long for this budding jeweler! I wish Alan would put it out to a bigger printing firm as I am convinced any amount of stock would fly off the shelf in no time at all as there is no other book of this calibre worth buying!

This is a well written project book in jewellery. The projects are detailed and well photographed, but not a book for the beginner. If you require books on methods and technical information I recommend 'Jewelry Concepts & Technology' by Oppi Untracht and 'Theory and Practice of Goldsmithing (Jewelry Crafts)'by Erhard Brepohl, which are better value for money.

1st off a new edition is on the way with lots of new photos and 5 new chapers so don't get fleeced buying an over priced used copy.

Meanwhile, This is the single best choice for the intermediate to advanced jewler and even a beginner can learn much. Great step by step that is written so one can jump in a process and glean a specific skill without making the entire piece.

I've been making jewelry such as featured in this book for over 17 years and am a book hound. All the others are fighting it out for 2nd place as this rules the roost!

Can't wait for the new edition. Hurry up Alan!

Toxic Fat Is All About The Inflammation, Stupid!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-17
The most cutting-edge nutrition expert of our day has got to be Zone Diet creator Dr. Barry Sears. Long before anyone was talking about inflammation as a root cause in heart disease and other health issues, he was coming up with solutions to the problem that now is becoming more and more evident is the primary reason why people are suffering from heart attacks, cardiovascular issues, and even death.

Don't be fooled by the title, though. Dr. Sears is NOT describing dietary fat that you consume in your daily meals, but rather that fat that just sits there in your abdomen and never goes away. He believes that fat is "toxic" because it is a sign of the untreated inflammation that can and will lead to greater health problems down the road.

Attacking it with an aggressive specialized fish oil treatment along with the Zone dietary approach can "reverse toxic fat syndrome in 30 days." That's what Dr. Sears says will happen and has the case studies of real people who have done it to prove his point. Whether you buy into the Zone diet or not, this book is well worth it just for the information on reducing inflammation to slow down the aging process, improve heart health, and restore your overall health to where it needs to be. That's something you can trust Dr. Sears will watch out for. He always has!

Good news! It's not your fault you're fat, it's good to be a bit fat (if not inflamed) and overweight people often outlive normal people.

This is the best book I have read so far that explains that it's not really about the fat; it's about the inflammation (and how to get rid of it).

Using the metaphor "The Perfect Nutritional Storm," Sears guides us through the history of how cheap food became available in the USA: not the good fruits and vegetables, but rather the cheap omega-6 fats and high glycemic carb foods. He points specifically to three factors that have created this health disaster in the USA.

The nice thing about Dr. Sears' books is that you don't have to read the previous ones to understand the material because he always has nice summaries of his prior discoveries---so this book includes info on not only the inflammation issue, but also the Zone diet and fish oil.

If you've ever been envious of someone who can eat all they want and not gain weight, you won't be after reading this book. It's not only the overweight who are susceptible to toxic problems. And an overweight person can even be healthy. Sears claims that the heaviest man in the world went on this diet and lost 400 pounds (at the time of the writing) and even long before reaching his ideal weight, achieved very ideal blood chemistry.

Sears takes us on a tour of the hormones of hunger. You will better understand the delicate balance of what causes hunger when you read this.
I wonder if someone could come up with a raw food vegetarian zone diet. That would be the Perfect Antidote to the Perfect Nutritional Storm.

Book Review: Toxic Fat: When Good Fat Turns Bad (Thomas Nelson, 2008)
by Barry Sears

"If you have a chronic disease (diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, or a neurological disorder), it's quite likely that a major underlying cause of your current condition comes from seemingly well-meaning governmental agricultural programs initiated more than 30 years ago."--Dr.Barry Sears

Dr. Sears spent two years researching Toxic Fat. This new book may be a bit controversial, but it may also be groundbreaking as the general public begins to read about why our country's citizens have physically changed during the last 25 years.

Dr. Sears mapped out Toxic Fat in 13 chapters covering: the obesity epidemic, nutrition, inflammation, good and toxic fat, toxic fat syndrome, his Zone plan, fish oil benefits, anti-inflammatory meals and recipes.

The Toxic Fat Syndrome--What is it?

Dr. Sears writes that the condition occurs when obesity is viewed as inflammation-induced and is either benign or malignant. As malignant, the fat acts like a tumor, it quickly spreads to every organ in the body. The process begins with excess body fat, spreading through the blood, resulting with chronic disease--Alzheimer's, allergies, asthma, Type-2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease. Signs of the silent inflammation are high triglycerides, low HDL, and high insulin.

Toxic Fat also includes several appendixes which should NOT be skipped over, but read thoroughly as they provide explanations from a doctor-researcher's understanding, made comprehensible to the general public.

* Blood Testing For Silent Inflammation--an important section about what you need to do for yourself.
* Hormones--"While some hormones, such as estrogen, testosterone, and growth hormone, do decrease with age, others--such as insulin and pro-inflammatory eicosanoids--increase with age....Ultimately by controlling both insulin and eicosanoids, you will achieve the fountain of youth (improved wellness) by reversing Toxic Fat Syndrome."
* Fish Oil--Covers usage, history of fish oil, problems with eating contaminated fish.
* Insulin Resistance--author explains that the problem begins in adipose tissue.
* Nutrigenomics--the diet affects the genes, mentions reservatrol (a wellness buzzword), fruits and vegetables as a necessity, aspirin usage.
* Zone Food Blocks--this idea is revisited from prior published books.

Key Points of Toxic Fat:

* Being overweight or obese is not necessarily your fault, but rather is a reflection of "adverse interaction of your genes with radical changes that have taken place in the American diet over the past 25 years."
* "Everything you have heard about the `cause' and the `cure' for the current obesity epidemic is probably dead wrong."
* Obesity is a form of cancer driven by inflammation.
* Some extra body fat can be good.
* Lean doesn't always mean a person is healthy.
* Eating less and exercising more may not work.
* Toxic Fat Syndrome is caused by diet.
* Results from a changed diet will occur within 30 days.
* Diet must include low fat protein, low glycemic carbohydrates, and high dose fish oil.
* Super fish oil contains GLA and will slow the rate of aging.

Another buzzword in the weight loss and wellness community is fish oil. Dr. Sears, a researcher in the dietary control of inflammation, has included an entire chapter and an Appendix devoted to the subject in Toxic Fat.

Toxic Fat's recipes are simple to prepare and utilize common ingredients--lean meats, low-fat dairy, beans, spices, herbs, vegetables, fruits. Each recipe is divided into a man's or woman's portion requirement. Examples:

* Crab Bisque--uses skim or 1% milk
* Taco Burger--bun free, prepared with 90% fat-free ground beef
* Apple and Cheese Melt--uses low-fat mozzarella

Key to this book, is the Bibliography, where Dr. Sears notes his numerous pages of research.

Toxic Fat is written from a doctor's medical viewpoint, so that the typical reader can understand what the new research means, how it can be applied, and how weight can be lost. A controversial book, Dr. Sears writes that our obesity epidemic's roots were planted back in the 1980s when refined carbohydrates (pop/soda, candy, processed foods), and some oils (soy, corn) became cheap. This paired with our dramatic decrease in the consumption of fish oil created what he calls the Perfect Nutritional Storm. Toxic Fat builds upon Dr. Sears's past books--The Zone, Omega Rx Zone. Not just a do this and lose weight book, Toxic Fat follows the modern scope of wellness for the whole body--which includes weight loss as prevention of further disease. Toxic Fat puts real-time information in the hands of its readers and sets them on the road to recovery and wellness.

A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Barry Sears is the author of several health books, selling more than 5 million copies. He continues his research into the dietary control of inflammation at his non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation.

Wow.....amazing. I laughed, I cried, I yelled...the emotions just fluctuated while reading this book. I stopped reading Sylvia Plath to finish this book and I was NOT disappointed! I wasn't fully prepared for what I read......but...I can safely say, that what I read was nothing short of an amazing piece of literature. I could picture each character so perfectly, their facial expressions, their emotions, it's just..wow...the book has left me almost speechless. I was always intrigued to find out what was going to happen next. Regardless of my desensitization to the abuse, having seen and read cases about it, I was still disgusted by what was happening, so much that I had to keep reminding myself it wasn't true, just to be able to keep reading it. Mr. Clark has really outdone himself in this work, and I look forward to reading a lot more from him. Thank you....you have contributed something absolutely wonderful into the world of literature. Well done!

I could not put this book down, which is saying alot for me. I rarely get caught up in a book like I did this one. I was sent on a roller coaster of emotions; I laughed, I cried, I got mad.
The detail was excellent and I had no problems picturing in my mind the events that happened and the emotions that the characters felt. Although the book is fiction, it saddens me to know that children really do go through the kind of abuse Kevin and his sister went through and people choose not to acknowledge it. It grieves me that while I kiss and hug my kids throughout the day, every day, that some children live in those horrifying conditions. I agree with other that it would make a great movie.
I am looking forward to seeing future works by this captivating author.

This book is pritty good but its not one of the best wolf books out there. It has alot of pictures and some useful information but it can have a whole lot more like other wolf books that i have read, but all in all if you are looking to learn about them this book does teach you information about them.

I have a deep fascination with wolves and I'm always on the lookout for more to read about them. This book was a gift from my husband, and it didn't disappoint. Barry's writing is friendly, informal, and informative. He is clearly in awe of his subjects and treats them with respect, but also has a sense of humor that makes his text and his photography equally engaging. If you skip over the text, that's fine, because the main attraction is the photography. Barry captures some truly intimate pictures of wolves. They are at once as familiar as domestic dogs and as fierce and mysterious as folklore has always depicted them. The elaborate rankings and rituals of wolf society are depicted and helpfully explained, but what really interested me were the shots that showed the individual personalities that make up a pack, and the pictures of wolves' faces that were so expressive. The stark black and white tones allow you to focus fully on the wolves, but Barry's descriptions of a wolf's eyes or the subtle shading of color in its fur made me wish at least a few pictures had been in color.
