This fourth issue of Asimov's long-running magazine has some great stories like "Heretic In A Balloon" by L. Sprague de Camp. Other authors include Asimov himself, F.M. Busby, Randall Garrett, and Barry Malzberg. This magazine was launched the same year Star Wars was released, and this is the first issue to mention the classic film, as it's reviewed by Charles N. Brown, with 3 black & white stills.

Takes the guesswork out of astrophotography
Helpful Votes: 40 out of 40 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-22
This book is really a gem. While it covers all aspects of astrophotography, including equipment, film, etc..., its real strength and main focus is determining exposure. Most other books I've examined are weak on this point. They give fairly vague rules of thumb and tell you to bracket exposures to make sure you get a good result. This book doesn't do that.

Gordon has developed an extremely precise system for determining what exposure time is required for a given lens, a given aperture (f-stop), and a given astronomical object. I've used the system several times and it has always produced a perfect exposure the FIRST time, with no bracketing required (at first, I did bracket -- being a suspicious type, but the suggested exposure was always the best of the bracketed group, so I stopped).

The easiest and best way to use the book's system is to check with your lens manufacturer to see at what aperture it gives the best optical performance (i.e. least chromatic aberration, least distortion, and best resolution), then use the fx system to determine, for the magnitude of the object you want to photograph, what the proper exposure time is for that aperture.

If you're serious about astrophotography, and especially if you're just starting out and don't want to learn "rules of thumb" the hard way (by trial and lots of error), buy this book! It'll save you lots of wasted film and missed shots.

This book is the most valuable single US text in my collection. Used every day for both measurements and technique and it seems to cover just about everything! Now we just need an on line version for PACS workstations. I have purchased three copies so far..... bsg

I love reading books about archaeology becuase, I myself being one, they are so full of history and methods of being a good archaeologist. So when I saw this book with all it's descriptions and wonder pictures, I knew I had to buy it. It talked about how archaeoloists excavate and where they do it. It is a wonderful book that is very interesting and fun to read.

I actually read the story before I let my son read it, making sure it was at his reading level, which it is. I knew instantly that he would enjoy it. The characters in the book all have unusual and funny names and they do some pretty crazy stuff, stuff I know my son would enjoy reading about. This book has got him wanting to read more which is always a huge plus in my book!

This book is nothing short of spectacular! I am fully impressed by the photography, the artistic layouts, color schemes, map layouts, attention to detail and overall balance betweena art and science. Notwithstanding, the scientific text and information presented in this beautiful monograph is cutting edge, but the overall impression given to the reader is that you're looking at the finest work ever published and dedicated to this paricular subject. Shell collecting, in and of itself, represents a very small microcosm in zoology, but Australia's Spectacular Cowries has elevated this science to a great new and higher level. Mr. Jackson should be commended for an excellent job, and I believe that this work has raised the bar for all other publishers attempting to capture the essence and soul of shell collecting. This book is truly a piece of art! I have never seen any work on the subject that even compares to this effort. Many others I know will want to share and appreciate the pleasure of owning this top of the line jewel for decades to come.

I have recently adopted this text for my courses and would recommend it without hesitation. I simply haven't seen any cd-based training tutorials or books on this or similar topics that are as comprehensive in material coverage that are also as logically formatted and as easy to use. This training package is a winner.

This book is great! A must read for anyone who has a disability and needs personal assistance. The book is very practical and useful June tells it like it is. She doesn't sugarcoat what it is like to use personal assistance. She uses a combination of humor, honesty, self responsibility, and common sense to tell us how to effectively manage our personal attendants. This book is the first realistic view of personal assistance I've read. The book is mostly about using live in attendants, but I think the material can be applied in other personal assistance arrangements as well.

Delightful Farm Story

Review Date: 2005-04-28
Baby's in the Doghouse is a sweet story that will appeal to young children who love animals and think of them as people. It is perfect as a read-aloud book that will hold children spellbound as the animals on the little farm struggle with their problems. Their problems are problems many of us have encountered in our own lives and watching them struggle with and solve them is as interesting and involving as a real life situation. Children especially, we see how life's little problems are solved.
The names of the characters are especially significant and will remain in the minds of the readers for a long time.
Baby's in the Doghouse is a story well worth the time to read and is a wonderful bargain. Your children will thank you for bringing such delightful characters into their lives.

Bacon's Eye-the closest focal point through his instincts
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-16
This soft cover book is the best collection to date of Bacon's instinct's on photo's as "a record" for motion and emotion, which led, as far as I am concerned, to his "violent colours and form's" that produce an "incredible, emotional charge which is "an impressive sort of violence".People often speak of Bacon's work's as violent, but Bacon said himself that he never saw any violence(in terms of a negative, painful meaning) in his work's.Bacon did see a violent execution in Picasso's work's through colour and form.
Bacon did state his work's were positively charged with incredible emotion's through his colours and forms which might be veiwed as violent ,but in the positive.I also feel, as Bacon did, that word's diminish an artist's work's, so that is why I am qouting him so often from the book "Francis Bacon In conversation with Michel Archimbaud".Bacon's Eye is full of photo's, some of his early unseen work's, and his use of colour and form after veiwing the photo's in the book. There is also an interview with Barry Joule, a close friend of Bacon, at the end of the book.
Bacon gave Joule a thousand never seen work's on paper before his death. This book has only some of them, and I would love to see the remainder if ever published some day, but you will get a much indepth look at Bacon's work from the one's supplied. This book is not to be passed by if you want something rare and intimate of the artist. If you were to compare this book to the one other book featuring Bacon's drawing's, which name I can not recall right now, Bacon's Eye is ten times better. It also has different textured paper for the plates and the interview section.
