If you intend to study this field, this book will be where you should begin and will always come back. First, put all the perspectives laid out in this comprehensive work into your mind and then work on some other literatures listed on its bibliography, and you will feel that you are learning something systematically. Believe me, this work is a first step for you towards the great understanding of this field.

A excellent small booklet, that describes the Material Culture of the Min speaking people in Papua New Guinea and Papua/Irian Jaya. There are not many publications from that area. Illustrated with many black & white photographs and line drawings of tobacco-pipe, arrow, shield and house-board ornaments.

Developing Your Writing Voice

Suzette Martinez Standring is more than a helpful, how-do book; it can be the start of a new career for many inspiring writers. She starts her book where all with the understanding that "every morning millions of readers turn the to their favorite newspaper columnist." Writers need an audience, they seek it, crave it and survive upon they support from their audience. The very thought of being in the public eye (or eyes) is what most writers seek and this book teaches a writer gives answers for that goal. Standring moves her readers, step by step, up the hill for "telling the story" and give an opportunity to become a successful columnist writer. She reminds writers that not all start out for recognition as a columnist, but often find themselves at that door in their writing career. What a wonderful opportunity for recognition as a writer while developing readership fans, she reminds the reader. Included in her information is, not only her knowledge but also that of great columnist that have been and/or are in the business. She helps to develop one's "voice" with advice from well-known columnist the late great Art Buchwald. Tell your story, write it to fulfill the editor's wants, and make it the right length. How difficult it is to tell a good story in a short amount of space. Standring takes her readers, as a good teacher does, through those steps, while helping them understand their voice. For example, will you be a humor or life-style columnist metro or religious? Blogging and getting on the radio are all included. She talks money, syndications, ethics and all else it takes. What more could a writer want? Her book is a mandatory read at three universities and it only just came out this year. That will speak for its credibility as a superb and educational columnist read.

I bought this book a few years ago, and return to it over and over, not only because of the information there that resonates with my own experiences, but also Patterson's wonderful lyrical writing. A Genius Loci is of course, the particular spirit/intelligence (genius) of a place, that resides or animates that location/land/site (loci). The concept and experience of the Genius Loci is essential to not only my spirituality, but my own work as a landscape architect, landscape historian, and archaeologist.

It is avery usefull book to people involved in litigation agaisnt asbestos companies. It allow you to use the long experience in this subject carried out in USA and other countries and the Companies strategies for avoiding their liabilities.

Still one of the best novels I've read that looks at religion in a fresh, humorous and enlightened way. Skewers the profane, inside and outside the church, with lots of insight into faith. Highly recommended.

Much of what we know about the A.D. 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius - the eruption that sealed Pompeii and Herculaneum in time and volcanic ash - comes from the letters written by Pliny the Younger to his friend Tacitus. Pliny was an eyewitness, and his uncle died in the eruption.<
These texts have been available for a long time. What is new and impressive about this book are its illustrations, relief engravings by artist Berry Moser, Professor in Residence in the Art Department of Smith College in Massachusetts.<
The letters are freshly translated by Benedicte Gilman, who has also provided biographies of Tacitus and Pliny the Younger, as well as an essay describing how it was that the letters themselves came to be preserved into modern times. This is solid, readable, exciting work in and of itself.<
But the real force in this book is the illustrations. Using a technique generally confined to wood engraving, Moser has given us a series of 16 vital illustrations that bring a terrible life to the horrible events of the eruption. As slim as it is, this volume is a literal "must have" for all lovers of art and history.
