Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-05
Highly experienced -- and very wise -- child and family psychologist Barry G. Ginsberg, Ph.D., has written a short book that covers a vast territory. Any single parent who is struggling with the burden of childrearing all alone, whether new to the role or not, would pick up insights here. There are really more than "50 wonderful ways" described clearly and realistically in these pages. What parent couldn't benefit from being reminded of what matters and what can be let go of in the interests of a more positive and happy family life? Ginsberg has left nothing important out -- and has included many anecdotes, specific suggestions, and more. Busy parents will particularly relax in the presence of Ginsberg's warm and supportive tone.

The Combat Engineers served a dual role in the army. While fighting with the infantry, they also performed vital functions such as building bridges, clearing minefields, and keeping the roads open as the US Army advanced. "The 51st Again!, An Engineer Combat Battalion In World War II" provides a rare insight into the lives of American soldiers serving in the Combat Engineers during the second world war. Authors Barry Fowle and Floyd Wright bring to life the heroic role of these men through first person accounts, official records and a wealth of photographs detailing the history of this typical engineer battalion as they fought the war in Europe. The 51st's story is filled with moments of the intense emotions of men at war, touching personal insights and even a few humorous antics. "The 51st Again!" rewards it's reader with an absobing narrative as well as all the detailed facts an historian demands.

Delicious recipes

This is a great book for anyone who loves Italian food. The low-fat recipes are delicious, use mostly common ingredients and are easy to make. The only illustrations are a small selection of photos in the middle.

The book starts out with a brief description of the ingredients and some suggested menus. Fat & calories are listed for each dish. Each recipe has a sidebar with severing suggestions, recipe variations, or background on the ingredients.

Recipes include appetizers, soups, breads, fresh pastas, sauces, polenta, salads, pizzas, desserts, and liqueurs. There are also many main dishes with vegetables, seafood, meat, and poultry.

Some of my favorite dishes include the spinach calzone, lemon risotto and chicken piccata. My friends loved the ricotta & basil tortellini. The chocolate and raisin biscotti served with coffee is also divine.

A Transformative Book

Is it true that the first Spanish grammar was intended as an agent of state control? Is it true that all writing up until Aquinas was dictation plucked from the air, without opportunity or perceived need for revision? Is it true that the priest reading the written Latin words in Spain, France, Burgundy and throughout Europe pronounced the words in a way that the worshippers understood? I don't know if these and other surprising assertions in the book are true, but having believed them I have found that this book has had a transformative effect on my experience of worship, language and oratory. I hightly recommend this book to priests, educators, and language professionals, and to any one interested in Christianity, language and schooling.

The authors (Bruce Malamud, Don Turcotte, and John Pelletier) should be congratulated on their clear exposition of this important subject. A more readable treatment of 'memory' in time series is not to be found.

Arguably, society supports geophysicists to tease apart the complex processes responsible for present and past geophysical phenomena in order to predict future events --and in the case of natural hazards (floods, climate change, sea level, earthquakes, asteroid impacts, etc.) to help mitigate their effects. To this end, geophysicists must first discriminate between the signal and the noise in their observations (data). This volume addresses this age-old requirement.

The book to own for anyone wanting a smaller home with big appeal

After looking and buying a stack of home design books, we became discouraged. Every book had repeat plans and nothing seemed unique at all, mass produced home ideas.Book after book were added to the stack with no luck at finding a plan to our liking.
We were so excited over Donald A. Gardner's unique style. The first book we found by him had larger homes but his style was like no other. Needless to say when we found "Affordable Homes for Every Stage of Life" we were thrilled. After a two year search,we are now getting things in order to build our home, thanks to this book. I recommend it to anyone wanting a smaller but still beautiful home.
Not only are the plans, in this book, full of character but the book itself is very nicely made with nice photos and an all around quality book.

The book, Beauty Bound, written by Rita Freedman is a novel that will not only raise your self esteem, but also help to see life from another point of view. A lot of people can relate to this book because it deals with the number one issue in woman's lives. This issue is the constant obsession with trying to be beautiful and perfect.
Beauty Bound gives a variety of real life stores from real women who have had problems with themselves. If you were a woman reading this book, it could really help you get over trying to be beautiful and trying to impress others and make you feel like you're not the only one. It will help you to realize that all the material things and looking like models isn't the only thing that matters in life.
This book shows you the reality of all the beautiful woman on TV and in magazines. They aren't as perfect in the pictures and movies as they are in real life. The book makes you realize how dumb it is to care what others think of you when all you really should be doing is caring how you feel about your self.
The majority of all women have once in their life faced the issue of wanting to be beautiful. Whether you think you have or not, believe me, you have. The question is why? Why do women everyday spend hours upon hours putting on make up and doing there hair? To impress people that they don't even know? To impress people that they do know and who already love them for who they are? The answers to these questions are in this book.

Great motivational memoir!

Barry Krauss' memoir captured and held my attention throughout. I wouldn't compare Krauss in either the areas of memoir writing or sports writing to Mitch Albom, but I doubt Mr. Albom could participate head-on in a goal line stand and live to tell about it--much less write a book about it. So, after we take the likes of Mitch Albom out of the equation and look at Ain't Nothin' But a Winner on its own merit, I can easily say that I found it to be a well-written, compelling memoir. After all, it's not every football player (turned writer) who can come up with descriptions such as "Alabama again came within one single puff of Coach Bryant's unfiltered Chesterfield cigarette of winning two national championships...." That's nice imagery. That's writing that keeps me reading.

Beyond looking at the book from a literary standpoint, the story and the message within the story make this book stand out. Krauss recounts his career in football with humor, with touching sensitivity, and with frank honesty. From high school through his years in professional football, Krauss gives the reader a rare inside view of that world. As he says, he lived the life many dream about and he's appreciative of the experience.

I'm not an avid football fan, but this book pulled me into this life devoted to the team and the game. I felt the tug of the ups and downs players and fans rejoice in and suffer from. The highlight of the book, of course, is Krauss' recounting of his years playing for Paul "Bear" Bryant on the University of Alabama football team. The climax is the one play-- the Goal Line Stand, on January 1, 1979, in the Sugar Bowl game against Penn State--where Krauss stopped Penn State's Mike Gunman from scoring. Football enthusiasts will enjoy Krauss' description of the play that stopped time. While reading that section, I felt the crack of helmets and came away with a better understanding of football fanatics.... (reviewed by Lou Belcher, freelance writer and editor)
