This is a thorough and readable book designed for the emerging clinician. The author speaks from the point of view of a person who stutters as well as one well read in the research surrounding cause, nature and treatment of stuttering.

I would be interested to hear from families of and people who stutter to see if this book is an appropriate, in-depth, resource for them as well.

A must have surgical anatomy atlas especially for orbital trauma. The illustrations and pictured fresh cadaver specimens completely cover relevant orbital anatomy for surgical approaches involving the orbit. The included disc media is a nice supplement. Agree with other review - highly recommended.

This book is an outstanding surgical anatomy atlas. The fresh-frozen cadavers are beautifully dissected, discussions are thoughtful, illustrations are well used, and the section on blocks is very helpful. The chapters on the lower eyelid and the facial nerve are truly outstanding. Together with the forehead anatomy book by Knize, these two books belong on the shelf of every oculofacial plastic surgeon. The CD with photos and illustrations is a nice bonus. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Holden goes to college and learns more life lessons

This is an amazingly well-written book. The prose flows easily and the main character is very likeable....while he starts out as a very naive wide eyed young genius of 16yrs after being thrown into college and encountering every type of snake one can along the way he matures in many ways and comes out a different man versus the boy he once was. There are many coming of age thoughts and ideals that are expressed well and leave a impression on your mind long after you have read the book. Though some of the characters are presented as archtypes, Targan takes it one step further and has the main character follow up on their lives as well and how their actions at one point have shaped the lives they have gone to live. A great coming of age or into oneself book. I first read it when it came out and parts of it come back to me at times as any good book does.

I had Dr. Kroll for this class at IU, and some of my journal entries are used in his book. This class had a tremendous effect on me, having grown up without any understanding of the Vietnam War. It was one of those classes that has had a lifetime effect on its students. For anyone interested in teaching about Vietnam, Dr. Kroll's approach is a great model

An excellent model for teaching Vietnam War literature

In this book, Dr. Kroll takes us inside his class on Vietnam War literature in order to show how a teacher can use the richness of the material to engage students and to help them develop crucial critical thinking skills. Dr. Kroll gives a useful overview to the structure of his class, whereby the literature and assignments form a meaningful progression that continually challenges students to respond, analyze, rethink, and write. The book includes a detailed list of readings and, most helpfully, models for assignments. What comes through most in this book, however, is Dr. Kroll's commitment to both the material and his students. He pays careful attention to their writing and their responses to material that can be very disturbing on a number of levels. When I was a graduate student at Indiana University, I was fortunate enough to work with Dr. Kroll when he taught this course there. This experience was easily the most significant one I have had in my teaching career; I have never witnessed a higher level of commitment on the part of a teacher nor a more favorable and affectionate response to a teacher from his students. If you are at all interested in using Vietnam War writing in your classroom, you must read this book.

This is a wonderful gift for anyone who has a Tennessee heritage - and will be a treasure to anyone who calls Tennessee home and "lives" there through history, family, memory and spirit. The pictures and words paint a wonderful tapestry that will ring familar with anyone who shares their "roots" with the wonderful people of Tennessee. It was a special gift to me and I have, in turn, given it to many who share a connection to the colorful and distinct culture of this state and its people.

Dr. Horner's very scholarly and readable book explores the issues of John Bunyan's masterpiece from a perspective that would be deeply appreciated by Bunyan himself. Despite its suitability for children, Dr. Horner recognizes that Pilgrim's Progress addresses adult problems with the timeless remedy and hope of the gospel. Pilgrim's Progress is a book for our time and is as fresh and powerful for our generation as it was 300 years ago.

I read Pilgrim's Progress for the first time very recently, and was arrested by the power of the book to conjure up and beautifully render scripture in true context within the allegory of a fantastic story. My version featured Bunyan's marginal notations containing short notes and some scripture references, and these were both helpful and enlightening; but anyone familiar with the Bible will know that almost every line is birthed from scripture! What to do!? How to begin to plumb the depths of Bunyan and Pilgrim's Progress! This book is worthy, worthy of deep study and reflection - and so Dr. Horner gives us Themes and Issues to light the way.

Themes and Issues becomes even more valuable in light of the fact that most modern Bunyan scholarship lacks enthusiasm for the central truths and presuppositions of Pilgrim's Progress. Horner discusses several modern scholars and analyzes their presuppositions with grace and intelligence.

Do you wonder whose life gave Bunyan the example of the despairing reprobate in the iron cage? Was there a friend to Bunyan who inspired the character of Faithful to emerge from the pages of Pilgrim's Progress? Why did Faithful, who is undoubtedly a true pilgrim, fail to accept the invitation of the Porter to enter into the Palace Beautiful? Dr. Horner explores many issues like these.

I was particularly impressed with Dr. Horner's analysis of the modern readers' problems with Pilgrim's Progress. He briefly explores the history of information media and agrees with Neil Postman (Amusing Ourselves to Death) and others that our visually-oriented media is killing our ability to pay attention and think.

Dr. Horner has written a very valuable book. I appreciate his extensive notes, bibliography and study questions at the end of the book. The study questions are broadly written so that some are suitable for elementary-age children while others require more sophistication. Dr. Horner also hosts a website that is devoted to John Bunyan and is an excellent source of study materials and information for those who, like me, have fallen in love with the Bedford tinker.

Dr. Barry Horner received his doctorate (from Westminster Theological Seminary) as a result of years of study on "Pilgrim's Progress". He takes one very deeply into the structure and symbolism of the book. He also offers helpful insights into Bunyan as a preacher, writer and Christian.

Having read "Pilgrim's Progress" a number of times I have been amazed at how much is in there and I did not see it. Bunyan's great tour de force is the most widely published book in the world (apart from the Bible) and it is a goldmine of theological truths concerning the Christian life. The Rev. C. H. Spurgeon considered "PIlgrim's Progress" his favorite book and read it over one hundred times!

Dr. Horner sheds a bright light on the book and helps one navigate through the whole work as a reliable guide. It is a book I will refer to over and over again. Yes, it does have some repetitiveness to it (as all good teaching does) but it is necessary. Dr. Horner is a scholar but don't let that get in the way- he is quite understandable and worth studying.

Straight From The Heart

Being the first book I've ever read on a young Australian's Vietnam War experiences, I was struck by his ability to recount his extraordinary experiences in such an intimate manner. Possessing some back-ground knowledge on the events of the period covered in the book, I felt a particular affinity with the writer. No doubt, a professional "ghost-writer" would have portrayed the experiences differently, however, Barry Petersen's "straight-from-the-heart" approach says it all - and very effectively so.

Barry Petersen is one of the most fascinating people that I have ever met.My Dad (an ex-soldier) and I drank a lot of beer and heard a lot of stories from Baz,as he was our neighbour. All of them check out,in fact Baz was quite modest about his experiences.
In the official history of Australian Special Forces in Vietnam,Barry is the only person with a chapter to himself.Special Forces soldiers that I have met testify to his skill, bravery and compassion for his private Montagnard army.
This is a riveting account of a little-known part of the Vietnam conflict from a tough, intelligent likeable writer and a brave and modest soldier.
Thoroughly recommended to anyone with an interest in the war and the Vietnamese people.

Extremely Well Done

Review Date: 2008-02-08
I am currently writing a novel that includes time-travel, and wanted to get it right. This lead me on a quest to find good books on the subject of time and this turned out to be one of the best. It is a clearly written, well-organized, exhaustively-researched, and deeply thought-out from both the philosophical and scientific points of view. Though Dainton limits himself somewhat (with good reason) it is the most comprehensive and well-explained book of its kind I've found. He uses very little jargon and includes a glossary for those of us who haven't taken the prerequisite courses. It has wide-breath and could be used as a textbook covering the ideas of many thinkers in the field. Somehow, he even made McTaggart comprehensible. I believe one chapter reflects more of Dainton's own research and that is the one that deals with consciousness. I found it so fascinating I ordered Dainton's new book, "Stream of Consciousness."

I didn't buy this book at first because there are no editorial reviews here on Amazon (as of 2/8/08) and no search inside. As it happens though, "Time and Space," was recommended in the forward of another book I was reading, "Travels in Four Dimensions," by Robin Le Poidevin (good but not as clear and comprehensive as this one).

If you'd like to search inside this book, I found you can do it in Google Books and while you're there you can read a peer review on the back jacket.

A comprehensive guide to theories of time and space

Well, fairly comprehensive. There is no mention of the crucial ideas of Henri Bergson (Relativity and Simultaneity, Time and Free Will, etc.), who basically debunked relativity as a merely mathematical tool with no real physical consequences.

But other than that ommission, this is about the most thorough book on the subject of time that I've ever read (and I've read a LOT of books on the subject of time). If you're time-haunted person, then this book is a must-have.

This book made me want to go out and free dolphins!...

Wow, this book is great! All I have to say is, if you are the kind of person who doesn't care if their tuna fish is Dolphin Safe, you might not care enough about dolphins to read the whole book. But if you care about your fellow animals, this is a good book to read. I went out and immediately started freeing dolphins. I have freed only 4 so far, but that was not my fault as my dolphin-freeing career was cut short when one of the buggers bit me in the leg and I had to retire from my Project.

And another thing. Disney makes all these movies about whales, whales, whales. Free Willy. Free Willy 2. Free Willy 33 1/3. Well, don't THEY care about freeing dolphins? NO! Why? Because they're all about making money! And studies show that young kids would rather cuddle a plush killer whale than a plush dolphin! It's the merchandising.

Anyway, after reading this review you should be ready to buy my^D^D the book and free some dolphins. After all, fish are people too!

The author, former trainer for dolphins starring on the much beloved Flipper tv series, details his struggle with big industry while he tries to return dolphins to the wild. There is a big trial in which the author loses a sizable civil fine for his liberation activities. He still has a let's get on with life joie de vivre about him. O'Barry's life is the stuff of drama and he's a modern day David in the eternal struggle with Goliath, in this case the captivity industry.
