I saw this book reviewed here on Amazon. I then went to the public library to review one of his other books. I liked what I saw. Then I bought this book based on the previous reviews and I'm very glad I did. It's definitely worth a 5 out of 5!

This book hits the sweet spot of what I'm trying to accomplish as a tutor to some junior high school students. Barry Lane's exercises and theories fit what I've learned so far in this fun, and sometimes hilarious, quest.

The book is easy to read, yet loaded with useful advice. Now that I've finished this book, I'll be getting his other books and most importantly: I'll be starting to implement his recommendations on teaching writing to children.

The author is a writing in instructor in New Hampshire/Vermont. The book has a useful bibliography and he often comments on important books throughout his chapters.

For so long, I have found revision difficult to teach for primary students. This book is a wealth of information. The vignettes given as examples are entertaining and are the basis for numerous mini-lessons to guide students through revision painlessly and effectively. This book will remain on my desk throughout the year. I highly recommend it.

Tired of trying to browbeat your students into revising their writing? Afraid you might scream if you have to slog through The Writing Process one more time? Try this welcome antedote. Humorously written but based on sound theory, Mr. Lane's book is chock-full of exercises that are fun, practical, easy to modify, and based on classroom experience. I've used them with third and fourth graders, high school students, and even teachers!
The book's first chapter, "Good Writing is Good Questions," is reason enough to buy the book. When we (or our students)
respond to a student's writing with questions about what we want to know more about, revision happens naturally.
"A large part of writing is simply trusting your own instincts and asking questions that will help you dig deep enough," Mr. Lane writes. Dig deep into this book. There's gold here.

Oh, the ideas!

Mr. Lane's book is packed full of ideas for those who wish to find a way to make writing (especially revision) fun for students. The book addresses everything from voice and tone to conferencing and questioning in an effort to make writing truly a student's own (not just what a teacher wants). I find it to be an excellant resource as a new teacher.

Yes for anyone who does glass painting, especially faux stained glass, this is a MUST HAVE for glass painting reference libraries. This is the only cfraft I do and I was amazed at the number of things I learned from these guys. Also the problems I've had in the past were resolved in such a way that went away thinking "Why didn't I think of that?"...because I didn't have this book! I'm on the hunt for more from these same artists/authors.

We have been so excited with the continued success of this, our first book. Worldwide sales of this title have now exceeded 50,000 which we think makes it the best selling book on glass painting. Don't miss our other books and our new book, The Complete Guide to Stamping is published in March 2004. If you have access to broadband internet, you can see our regular TV show, Alan & Barry's Craft Choice and a host of other shows on www.createandcraft.tv. Since I am a beginner to glass painting and have one book on the subject I was looking for something more comprehensive that covered other techniques. After reading the review and previewing from amazon's "look inside", I had to buy the book. "The Complete Guide to Glass Painting, is just what it says, it is a good start for beginners and and provides lots of projects, techniques and motifts for the more advanced glass painter. There are so many techniques I never though of that was not covered in my one glass book. When the book first arrived in the mail, I glanced through it quickly; now I am reading the book word for word so as not to miss a great tip. Each page is well designed and layed out for easy reading and understanding with visual direction. You can't go wrong. For those who have more knowedge, this book has 400 motifs to use or combine to create fantastic glass paintings and projects that spark ideas. If you must have a glass painting book, this will be the only one you will need. Allan and Barry, thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience, this is a great book. If the authors ever collaborated to produce anther book; I will be looking out for more of them.

If you just are getting one book about glass painting to try the hobby out then this is a good choice. It has a good overview of the materials available, step by step instructions for different techniques and templates to trace over (glass is perfect for tracing ;-) so you can get started on some small projects. The color pictures are plentiful and pretty, and the price is not too high as one might expect with color pics. Even if you are just into crafts and later find that glass painting isn't your thing the templates and pics can carry over into other crafts.

This is a good book if you know you want to try glass painting out.

The techniques presented in this book is good enough for a beginner like me to get started. However, the projects given in this book was not enough to motivate me to try them. I've found that the book was not organised enough for a beginner to go through the projects and progress from there.

Having said all this though, I still think that the book is a good reference to have and coupled with other books like Glass Painting (The Art of Crafts series) by Naazish Chouglay, you could learn more and appreciate the art as well as the techniques behind glass painting.

A wonderful chronicle of a Jewish family in Belarus beginning in the early 20 th century and culminating in its destruction in Hitlers holocaust A cast of remarkable characters illuminates this novel The fiery Rachel and soft spoken husband Yacov Ivanovsky,Rachels father the respected and tough Abraham Rakhlenko, the colourful Chaim Yagudin. The Ivanovsky children includin the narrator,Boris and the beautiful Dina to name only a few of the cast of characters We grow to know and love the people in this book And it with a profound sense of horror and tragedy that we see their crule destruction at the hands of the Nazis

It is however through the few survivors such as Boris Ivanovskyand his sister Lyuda and the young Olya that we find hope

What took away from the book was as one previous reviewer points out the ommission of the horror of the Bolshevik Revolution Stalin years but due to censorship in the Soviet Union when the book was written in the 1970's the writer could only hint at these things

This novel is based on my grandmother's family history. Anatoly Rybakov was my second cousin. He interviewed my grandmotehr several times, taperecorded her stories, baed the novel on our family's history. This book was published in Russia in 1979 (the year I emigrated from the Soviet Union), and it was the first legally available publication to mention the figure 6 million (estimated number of Jews perished in the Holocaust).
The story is not necessarily girm or frightening, there is quite a bit of humor, a very romantic love story and a pretty uplifitng ending despite all tagedies.

Where was THIS book hiding? There are very few books that I truly enjoy, but this is one of them. I first read Mr. Rybakov's "Children of the Arbat" and "Fear", books about young adults in 1930s Moscow, and enjoyed both very much. Because I could not immediately find the third book of his trilogy ("Dust and Ashes"), I read "Heavy Sand", which my library just happened to have.

This book about Jews living in the Ukraine from 1910s to 1940s is a great read. The book is more a story about how forthrightness and integrity meant something in the days of yore, rather than a treatise about Soviet Judaism, therefore, it is totally accessable to the gentile, American reader. "Heavy Sand" also does not have the superfluous, melodramatic verbage that plagues much of Russian/Soviet literature, verbage that often obstructs the point being made and makes much of Russian/Soviet literature unpalatable to most Americans.

The one knock on "Heavy Sand" is that it was obviously tailored to pass the censors in 1970 USSR. It doesn't dwell on Stalinist purges or pervasive anti-Semitism, which were more than prevalent at the time. However, knowing this going in, it is an amazing, warm and inspiring book. Find it, get it, read it. I cannot recommend "Heavy Sand" highly enough.

A generational saga told simply and movingly

You know, I say this all the time, but I have really got to learn Russian one of these days. This time the reason I wish I knew the language is because I'd like to see if the original of Heavy Sand has the same plainspoken, conversational tone which makes the English translation so engaging. It doesn't take long to get [wrapped up] into the story of the Rakhlenko family and to fall in love with all the characters, from the noble to the scoundrels, with all shades of messy humanity in between. At times you don't even feel as if you're reading a novel but hearing a good friend masterfully tell his story and those of his parents and grandparents. This is perhaps the most unpretentious great novel I've ever read.

The small events of the novel's first half blend seamlessly into the world events of the war and the destruction of the entire village, and in both times and places you feel utterly transfixed by what is happening to the people of this family and their village. And despite its depressing setting, Heavy Sand ends on a relatively uplifting note. There is plenty of horror in the book, but also plenty of hope.

I didn't want this book to be over. Highly recommended!

If you can overlook certain things that I find a bit grating--especially the author's touting companies like Microsoft and Amway as exemplars of the new "win/win" economy (I prefer to see them as the WORST examples of the exploitative Industrial Age economy)--you will realize this is an important and timely book. The author has created an inspiring and stimulating collage--his work itself an example of the infinite possibilities for creativity that the Information Age offers.

I regularly scour library catalogs for new books in subjects like "Information Society" and "Knowledge Management." This is one of the few that I've read from cover to cover.

I wish I had this book at my disposal when I started to change the management system at my own company. I begun a bold and seemingly insane program to get our employees more interested and involved in the company's future for the same reason Barry Carter decided to write this book. We both realized that today's big corporations are nothing more than mini Soviet Unions, controlled and socialized economies, where wealth creation is inefficient, the people are unmotivated and unhappy. (When I first got in contact with him, he thought I read his book). With this book I could have explained to my partners and the employees why I thought we needed to change and avoid the traditional pyramid structure in our company and create a self-managed environment.

The author provides a clear historical and organizational analysis of our current corporate environment through his personal experience and skillful inclusion of other modern thinkers on the subject. I started my movement from a gut feel, and was doing it by the seat of my pants, while feeling like an idiot sometimes, not being able clearly define the final structure, and at the same time, I felt very lonely in the wilderness. After reading his book, everyone at my company would have clearly seen the advantages and reasons for abandoning the old management structure and creating a modern organization that could have thrived in the Information Age. I highly recommend this book and the WEB site to anyone who is aware of our changing world, who wants to survive in business, and who cares about the customers and employees by creating or changing a company to the new way of doing business, where wealth creation is maximized, while people are creative and happy.

First off, this book made the cut above another ten or so options on the fringes (the amazon reviews helped). It was a good choice. The author captures the essence of many other books as well as real-world experience with two fundamental points that every manager and every employee--including fast-food employees and others in "drone" jobs--needs to absorb: first, that the existing bureaucratization of the economy at every level is costing so much as to place those companies in jeopardy during the forthcoming economic shake-out, and second, that the sooner every individual begins the process of inventorying their personal capabilities and creating the networks for offering their personal services and knowledge via the Internet to all comers, the sooner they will be able to share in the profits associated with their direct individual contributions to the new economy.

The Department of Defense acquisition and contracting examples are especially shocking because they show, so credibly and in detail, how we have institutionalized multi-billion dollar waste.

This is a special book. It is by a practical man who has drawn very personal and transformative lessons from the school of hard knocks, and whose recounting of those lessons have value for anyone who expects to work for a living today and in the future. This is not a "get rich quick" book as much as it is a "get rich together or get left behind" book.

Assuming that Futurists do their homework right, one should be able to act on their insights with a fair degree of confidence. With "Infinite Wealth" the same trending snapshots caught by noted futurists such as Faith Popcorn, Alvin Toffler and John Naisbitt take on more personalized dimensions. Barry Carter opens up before his readers doors to personal fulfillment, inviting them to join the driving forces of 21st Century new economies. If ever there was insider information worth its weight in gold, this is it.

Whether or not you are already a pioneer of the emerging Free Agent Nation, this book is a must read! If you are one of tens-of-millions sensing that the world you thought you knew is changing, not certain where you might fit in, I highly recommend "Infinite Wealth" as a beginner's guide to learning. But be forewarned! "Infinite Wealth" is not really about material wealth - per say, and if that is what you seek...well then maybe you should read the book. Otherwise, you may never know what hit you.

Understanding the coming Future

With the publication of Infinite Wealth, Barry Carter has established himself as a voice on the leading edge of the synergic paradigm.

The synergic paradigm is a place where you and I can be much more by working together than we could ever be by working separately. It is a place where we both can win. It is a place where we can create a win-win world in contrast to our present win/lose and often lose/lose world.

To solve the problems facing us (humanity) at the beginning of the 21st Century will require nothing less than our learning to work together. We must learn to Co-Operate. As Barry Carter explains in his Conclusion to Infinite Wealth:

"Our social institutions are dying. The pain we feel is the pain of death and birth simultaneously, the death of one civilization and the birth of a new one. We have entered a period in which the conservative person who does not take risks and needs stability has become the risk taker, the radical, and the gambler. It is a period in which the one who refuses to change will surely be the one who will lose the most in the coming years. There is no going back to the way things used to be. Back to the basics is a failed policy. The future has already begun, and the trend is clear.

"Starting today you must have a completely new outlook on life. You must be responsible. You can no longer depend on employers, unions, or governments to look out for your economic well-being, to provide you with a job, retirement, social security, health care, or a safety net.

"From this day forward you and your global network of partners are responsible for creating work and wealth for yourselves. If you have no network you have no security. All of the rules have changed. The guarantees and promises made to you by Industrial Age society are null and void and will be breached.

"The government and controlled economies have no choice. The power bestowed on them in the Industrial Age is slipping away--to you the individual supplier and customer. You the individual supplier and customer have no choice about accepting this responsibility. Mass victimization is no longer an option.

"Because most companies and employees are not seriously preparing, the number of companies that fail to make the transition could be extremely high. And there likely will be no unemployment benefits, no welfare, and no Social Security safety nets to catch those who fall. Your network is your security. As we stand poised on the edge of the greatest advancement and growth boom in history, we may stumble. Many may lose life, fortune, and standard of living and suffer tremendous hardship.

"We the individuals are the only ones who can make the change. Our corporate and political leaders do not have the power, vision, or intelligence to address the root causes. We the people must wake up from the Industrial Age sleep into which our factory-style schools, jobs, and governing system have lulled us. We must come out of our defined compartments and take responsibility. Our leaders cannot do what has to be done to correct our problems; this responsibility does not lie in their bureaus of specialty. It is not in their job descriptions.

"History has shown that real change usually comes only through crisis. The evidence shows that the crisis has begun. Tens of thousands are dead from the transition. We can possibly lessen or prevent the crisis if we align ourselves with the change. Today we have the technology, knowledge, power, ability, intelligence, and willingness to move faster toward win-win wealth creation.

"We must use intelligence to recognize what is occurring and move with the natural flow of things and with all deliberate speed. Either way, we have to make the transition. Meandering along simply means that we will pay a higher price in life, death, suffering, standard of living, and debt for our children. Meandering also risks complete collapse and possibly a dark millennium.

"The universe does not guarantee our standard of living or our survival. Perhaps our ancestors had to meander during periods of social transition because there was little or no precedent and little knowledge to use the precedents there were. We are fortunate because we can learn from their mistakes. As the late Carl Sagan said, "we see further because we stand on their shoulders" (1980).

"Becoming aligned with the coming change will allow us to avoid pain and to prosper. Let's get on with it. Let's stop the bleeding and start the fun, passion, and living! This will be the most fun and exciting time of our lives!"

Barry Carter has discovered one of the biggest secrets of science: "When you read and understand the work of a world's leading expert, you can become the world's second leading expert."

Carter spent 12 years of his life studying the world's leading experts in the synergic paradigm. In Infinite Wealth, he shares what he has learned and interprets his new understanding from his unique perspective developed from working as a cog in the wheel of our present Industrial Civilization. With this interpretation he has expanded the paradigm. As a synergic scientist working in the field for 27 years, I was surprised and delighted to learn more. Infinite Wealth has much to offer to both novice and expert.

This is an important book that explains the shape of the coming future. I recommend that every thinking human read it!

If one is a previously biased reader, this book will doubtlessly contain some documents that are upsetting to read on grounds of including inciteful material. However, the only real criticism that I have is that the 3rd edition has several documents that are of interest to those seeking to research the early Mandatory period, such as documents by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the Revisionist Zionist and ideological founder of the Irgun Zvai Leumi. It is understanable though, that as future editions come out the length could get phrohibitively long without pruning some data. As a basic and intermediate level documentary text it is one of the best I have come across.

I will not spend a lot of time writing about how valuable a reference this is - the other reviewers on this site have already more than done it justice. Aside from the relative lack of material on early Zionism (also pointed out by one of the other reviewers), this book has most if not all of the relevant documents. I have only one major criticism (the reason I gave the book four stars instead of 5): the almost complete lack of information about the original sources. Apart from a one-liner preceding each document, no information is given regarding 1) the citation of the original work, including page numbers, where appropriate; 2) the language in which the original work was written; 3) if the work was not written in English, credit for the translation, the date thereof, etc. While these may not be of interest to the casual reader, to anyone doing research in the field, if only for a college paper, these details are critical. Furthermore, in an area as controversial as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the ability to trace documents back to the original and verify translations is everything.

Essential reference to the whole Arab-Israeli issue.

I write in relation to the sixth revised and updated version of this work. My purchase was based upon the recommendations of others here and I was certainly not disappointed with my acquisition of this book.

It really is a priceless reference and guide to the way in which the Middle East has taken shape and how the whole Arab-Israeli issue has developed since it's inception. Indeed, references are quoted with effect from 1882 through until the present day.

We are treated to a seemingly endless accurate list of letters, speeches, reports and articles from a considerable cross section of sources, both in the international arena and in the region itself. This latest version even contains sections on the Camp David negotiations and their subsequent failure in 2000/2001.

One is able to see from the direct quotes of the parties concerned, exactly what was said, and moreover in it's true context, making this an indisputably essential asset to understanding the conflicts and `peace-making' in the region. This level of understanding is made accessible not only to the Camp David talks but also to virtually every other episode of significance relative to this ongoing issue throughout the many decades.

A highly recommended read.

The book is simply a collection of documents on the Arab-Israeli conflict, dating back to the British Mandate in Palestine. The editors included all the important papers such as the Balflour Declaration, the "White Paper," various UN declarations, and speeches made by both Arab and Israeli leaders. The latest documents it contains are those covering the Camp David meetings between President Clinton, barak, and Arafat near the end of Clinton's presidency. While it is not a history of the conflict (merely a collection of historical documents), it certainly can provide you with plenty of info on the subject.

This book is like a personal trainer for inline (roller skating). I started reading this book in July 2006 and by August 2006 I was so much faster in inline skating. This is from someone who has never taken any lessons and started to skate on his own. I did the Northshore Inline (Duluth) half marathon later in Sept 2006 in 1 hour 6 mts (pretty impressive by my own standards). I keep referrring to it once in a while to keep up my training and speed.

From the background I had during my competitive years in the sport of inline speedskating, I believe the book is a complete and technical guide to the basic terminology, strategy, and mechanics that are involved with speedskating; both on ice and inline skates. There is heavy usage on photographs to show you the correct way to skate to reach your potential but to achieve what is seen in the picture typically takes years of training with coaches to show you the ways to train your body to achieve the form and stride of an effecient inline skater.

I also believe that some of the material is dated regarding the current face of the sport but the book is a staple in the sport and is a worthy look for outsiders and internally at the facets of the sport of inline and ice speedskating. For anyone interested in speedskating either on ice skates or inline skates, this book is the most comprehensive guide from a champion speedskater that covers most facets of the sport.

"Unraveled" is a pleasant romance novel set in a space-faring future. T is a young lady who has been raised in isolation at a scientific community. Eager to complete a research project, T leaves the research center and hires R, a ship's pilot, to engage in a fast paced whirlwind tour of planets to prove her theory. T is naive and white collar; R worldly and blue collar. R despises scientists in general and T in particular, but finds her irresistable and enchanting.

The personalities and attraction were well portrayed. The action was fun and fast paced. This novel was more Romance than SciFi, though there were certainly elements of both. There is an author's message that its okay for individuals to make a modest profit, but horridly immoral for companies to make a profit. This is annoying but only overplayed in the Epilog, which I recommend you skip.

This wasn't "keep forever & re-read" material, but it was entertaining and fun. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.

Five roses! Enter the exciting world created by Ms. Barry, as Tru and Rayce travel from galaxy to galaxy in search of a lost treasure. You'll enjoy how these two loveble space travelers get in and out of trouble, not to mention in and out of each other's hair, until they find what they are searching for, and discover a treasure greater than they imagined. The story is not only creative and humorous but its hotter than a "Rostron" mud bog! And, you'll find yourself wishing we did have VirtuWav machines! If you like Joanna Lindsey's futuristic novels, you'll be delighted in this one. Ms. Barry has landed a winner!

Wow, is all I can say!! I started this book and did not put it down until I finished it at 1:00 am. This book has all of the qualities I love in a great story. My two favorite genres are science fiction and romance. C. J. Barry combines the best of both in Unraveled.

I was intrigued by the story that spanned different planets and involved solving the puzzle of the location of the legendary Curzon Collection. In the story, Barry tied in the ancient Egyptian pyramids on Earth. The search for The Curzon Collection involved finding similar pyramids on different planets. Tru and Rayce are both likeable and easy to relate to. Both face their own moral dilemas on their journey. They also discover more than just passion exists between them.

I know I will be reading all of C. J. Barry's books.

Tru Van Dye grew up on an insular colony of Majj scientists. To prove themselves worthy, each member must succeed in a project, invention, or some type of major scientific break through before age thirty. Tru is now twenty-nine. She has less than a year to earn her Charter or she would be disassociated from her home planet. Tru decides to locate the legendary lost Curzon Collection. She has only a small plate to help her. But the plate is a key. She needs to locate three unknown pyramids, built centuries ago, on three unknown planets. The plate must be set on top of each pyramid in order to complete the plate's map. Then she must use the plate to locate and retrieve the Collection. However, the Majj are not allowed to leave their planet. Their own administrators keep them grounded. With the help of her mentor and only real friend, Noa, Tru gets off world and goes to hire the man best suited for the retrieval job.

Rayce Coburne is building a deluxe spaceport, due for its grand opening in less than three months. Due to lack of funds, things are not going well. Then Tru shows up and offers him all the funds he would ever need, for a simple mission. Rayce would have refused instantly if his partner, Gil, had not forced him to be realistic. Rayce hates all Majj, for very personal reasons. He agrees to Tru's mission, but only if Tru agrees to also include a kiss each day.

***** A stellar romance with action that Indian Jones would envy. Author C.J. Barry is quickly becoming famous in the sci-fi/romance genre and for good reason. Few in today's market can match Barry's intense action and suspense while keeping the romance alive as well. C.J. Barry is an outstanding author. Do not believe me? Simply read this novel. You will. *****

Twenty-nine years old Tru Van Dye, works and lives at the Koameron Institute. Tru's mother died when she was only six years old and had known only the unloving control of your father, who died a year ago. Tru is now a cold, and some say, frigid woman. The Majj, who are like the elders of this highly intelligent based group, run the institute. The Majj control all the workers, who must by the age of thirty, have obtained a Charter. A Charter being, types of discoveries---fines of highly cultural or medical importance, will only be worthy. In reality, only a selected few with enough money will ever receive the benefit of these Charters. If you fail to achieve your Charter, you are stripped of all titles, and forced to leave the institute in disgrace. It is a cold and unloving environment, with analytical thinking the only objective. Tru's only real friend, Noa Leeberfinger, is her cohort and confidante in this story. Together Tru and Noa mastermind a plan to achieve her Charter. It all revolves around a metal plate, no bigger than her hand. Tru found it after her father death. It is Tru's theory that this strange plate holds the clues to the lost art and treasures of Curzon forgotten culture. With the help of Rayce Coburne, she hopes to find and prove her theory...

Rayce Coburne is a specialist at getting or retrieving whatever you desire. If you can afford it, he can get it. He has a perfect record and doesn't mind telling you so. Rayce, also has a reputation as a ladies man. His dark rouge good looks and his blue-green eyes, could stop traffic at midday in Time Square! He has to keep that hard muscled body ready for anything, if you know what I mean . Rayce would never do business with or for a Majj, but he needs the credits to finish his dream...A luxurious space station. When he meets Tru, Rayce dislikes her cool demeanor at once. You see, Rayce lost a loved one because of the greedy Majj. His dislike is apparent to Tru, which is just find with her. The more distance between them, the better. Rayce and Tru will have to overcome their differences and band together to survive in, at times, dangerous and unexpected, planetary adventure. Along the way, Rayce can no longer stop his sexual urges toward Tru. Tru, needs to know what it is like to be desired by a real man. Together, they melt the frigid wall of ice Tru has built up, and the fog of anger Rayce has been in, to find a desire so strong, it might ignite their whole universe...

This is the second in C. J. Barry's series, the first being Unearthed, with is sold-out at this time. Unraveled is sure to follow in the footsteps of Unearthed, faster than you can say planetary travel! I would buy more than one, because you will wear out your first copy *G*. Unraveled is another jewel in C. J. Barry's crown, with this sexually charged futuristic hit, that is...UNRAVELED...

I like this story. Vikings sail across the Atlantic centuries before Columbus and encounter Teotecs. Casca is taken prisoner and sacrificed to the Teotec gods but his immortality convinces the natives he is a god and Casca runs the show. With help from the Vikings they destroy an invasion from their enemy the Olmecs. I love the description of the fat Olmec king Teypetel. Sounds like he ate too many burgers. At the end of it Casca leaves with the Vikings back to their ships.

Classic Casca!

This series belongs to those classics such as Robert E. Howard's Conan saga, or Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan. Casca is both memorable and one of a kind anti-hero.

God of Death proves that. High octane action and aventure on a cinematic scale seldom seen. A must read for anyone, both male or female.

EXCELLENT CONTINUATION OF THE STORY

This is the second book of Sadler's Casca Series. As with several of the other books in this series, it is not in absolute chronological order. You have to keep reading the series and put the chronology in order yourself. This is okay though and does not distract from the story one bit. This is classical Sadler stuff. The story line hold true and Casca remains Casca. The story concerns his voyage to the new world with members of his Norse group. Each page is filled with typical Sadler action and can truely be classified as a page turner. I am a Sadler fan and do feel this was one of the better stories in the servies...everyone has their favorite though. Recommend this one highly.

The second book of the series, but oddly the third chronologically, follows on from the Barbarian and tells of the voyage of Casca and his vikings across the ocean to Central America where Casca becomes at first a captive of the ancient Teotec peoples.

After surviving a sacrifice he becomes revered as a god and helps win his people a war, but at a cost. For those who wish to find out more, please read this book as its one of the best in the series.

As with most of the early Sadler books, this one is a great story of adventure and war. The main premise here is that a band of vikings, led by the main character, reached Central America long before Cortes, and become embroiled in a petty war. Casca's immortality helps him win over the people who regard him as a god but there is a price to pay, as Casca finds out in the end.

Barry's oxymoronic view of the aesthetic atmosphere drives liberally in a radical world of writing. His poignant and precise touch on the nebulous line that divides and encompasses the writing and visual arts and poetry, is a phenomenal explication on the spirit and presence that can strike us all dumbfounded when gawking and drooling at colorful oprah. He takes a painting and expounds on it thoroughly enough to encapsulate even the ignorant, and even his tone and rhythm musically provide a contextual creation. His work, in itself, is a piece of art.

Fr. Barry has provided so many insights into ways to further friendship with God especially by asking the reader to pause, imagine, and reflect on a scriptural experience. His encouragement to "talk" with God about any situation is particularly helpful to this reader.

Fr. Barry has done it again. I fell in love with his writing in his book
God and You and it has proved to be a constant source of spiritual refreshment. Now A Friendship Like No Other rests on my night table and offers peace and new insight every evening. His fine mind asks us to tackle the most provocative questions honestly: why God allows bad things to happen; where are the "thin places" in your world, places where the Irish say the border between heaven and earth is thinner, more porous, and God is able to "leak through." His allusions to victims of the Holocaust are especially poignant. Another beautiful, accessible book from Fr. Barry. Mary Claire Richardson PS I have sent it to my 88 year old Aunt and my 40 year old friend suffering from a brain tumor.

Good - But Not What I Expected

This was a helpful book, but I guess I expected it to be more "warm and fuzzy" in terms of developing a friendship with the Lord. The book was more theological, focusing on Bible passages, etc. I did find these scripture verses to be helpful, but the book has a much more serious tone than I was expecting. I am not against this kind of tone for a religious book, but for a book focusing on FRIENDSHIP, I did expect a little more warmth. I'm not disappointed in my purchase as there was much wonderful content in this book and it did help my friendship with the Lord grow. Just not as much as I was hoping.

Hard to Resist

Friendship with God seemed to be a lofty ideal until I read this book. Fr. Barry's work reveals an abiding friendship with God so true as to evoke, in the reader, Jesus' prayer to His father, "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done." Infused with passages from Scripture and excerpts from gorgeous poetry throughout, Fr. Barry shares the insights and wisdom of his own deeply-lived faith. There is a sense of urgency about this book, as there is much to be done in the face of the many harsh realities of everyday life. Exercises sprinkled throughout the book invite the reader into companionship with God: that we all might become contemplatives in action. The invitation is hard to resist.

Simple and compelling metaphor

Review Date: 2008-05-13
It is easy to get lost or confused when trying to love God or feel loved by God. Religions provide so many rules. Father Barry gives us a simple metaphor, a loving relationship. He asks us to consider how much we live as if God is out to punish us; he urges us toward a new understanding of God and Jesus. The path to a closer relationship with God is the same as the path to a closer relationship with another person. In thinking this way, I can come up with all kinds of ways of loving God more and feeling more loved by God. This book is also a modern interpretation of the Ignatius Spiritual Exercises. Almost all 21st century Christians will find Ignatius's 16th century exercises daunting and altogether politically incorrect. Barry's exercises blend imagination and scripture reading in a most Ignatian way. Although specifically Christian in some chapters, the book is written in an open way to invite anyone who believes in God to build a closer relationship with their higher power.
