Everything you need to know to turn a penReview Date: 2005-11-13
The book begins by explaining which lathe (in case you don't have one) to buy for they type of project you plan to turn. Lathes can be used for turning other projects than just pens and the author provided that information as well. He continues with which tools and materials are good to work with and he even explains how to "approach" the wood with the tool while it is on the lathe.
He has a section on stains and finishes which I plan to try. I knew about dyes but not which one(s) to try. The author cleaned that up for me for which I am grateful. Then we come to the first project, a Slimline pen. While the photos were very good in showing what was being explained in words, this project didn't explain how the bushings were used or even what they were for. Never having turned a pen, I was lost but I kept reading.
In Project Two, in Step Six, how to place the bushings on the mandrel was finally explained. Yippie, now I can give turning a pen a try because I know how to "load" the mandrel. Maybe putting this explanation in Project One might be a good idea when the book gets a rewrite.
There are nine projects and six material types shown so I shouldn't run out of ideas on what materials to use or what style of pens to turn. He even provides a section on how to market what you turn.
This book was everything I was looking for in a pen turning tutorial book. If you are planning to turn pens, I would definitely recommend this easy to read and easy to understand book.

STUNNINGLY GOOD!! In One Little Book, Everything You Need to KnowReview Date: 2008-08-19
You can join 100 guru marketing groups. You can buy 100 Get Rich books. You can attend 100 marketing seminars.
Add them all up, and you may have a condensed version in this little book for under $10. It's craziness. For under 10, Barry Callen gives you ALL the tools you need to sell and promote successfully.
The price is priceless... the brevity is key, the knowledge is prodigious, the presention simple, the direction straight forward, no nonsense and to the point.
It's more than just phases. It's a super comprehensive Cliff's Notes of steps to take to sell your product. Just do every chapter, and that will be that - Success City! Wow... I bet some people will think I'm a bit over the top on that one... but, oh no! : )
Each chapter is clear and concise, brief yet detailed. He writes in a very conversational style - easy-easy to read. Chock FULL of info in every nicely worded sentence.
Some goodies:
8 Principles for More Effective Communication
"Look through your customer's eyes, not your own..."
23 Creative Approaches to Naming a Business
"Your single most important word and phrase is your name."
18 Approaches to Writing a Headline
"What's your most important point?"
Tactics for Print and Display Media
9 Steps to Creating a Print Ad - the best photo to choose
And a whole plethora more. Like, Tactics for Website Advertising. Very condensed - yikees, add effort (Do-ism), stir and serve! Fabulous!
I don't know about you, but when someone condenses (crams) a lifetime of incredible marketing "secrets" into one little extremely readable (he follows his own advice - "Write to express, not impress") how-to manual, you got to have it. And the author, Barry Callen, is TRULY an industry great having worked with Ogilvy & Mather, Nabisco, Coca Cola, United Way, etc.
I wish Barry Callen was my Dad. Oh, but then I'd be really rich and successful, and I'd be on some wonderful tropical island, or the top of Mt. Everest, or going to an Ivy League school thinking about running the world. And then, I wouldn't have written this little review to you from my humble little heart! : )
This book is more than a book. It is a TREASURE.

The Piagetian Approach even works on LeadershipReview Date: 2008-06-02
When one as a leader start to view workers or groups as needing instructions much like young students, two main findings will emerge. First, no longer will leaders underestimated as to what followers know or why they do a task a certain way. Nor will the leader fail to spend a fair amount of training. Secondly, there will be one dominant way to expose, correct and teach them if one analyzes them first. No question leaders will lead differently, but more importantly, they will do it more effectively. This in short is the Piaget's theory.
While Piagetian theory has been used in child development and education for decades, I started using it as a basis for teaching the principles of leadership in 1995. With executive training, there is backround literature lecture given first and mini case studies later. But in the classroom,I require my students to explore, study and discuss the literature. This expose them to how leadership evolved over time by culture, religion, etc ..(This is Piaget's principle in believing the way to understand anything is to understand how it evolves). I start off with Gilgamesh epic of Homer to the teaching of leadership from a host of thinkers (such as Erasmaus,Tyndale, Shakespeare, to Caryle's heroes essay as well as Max Weber's model of charismatic leadership). Then my students are able to discuss how one become a leader or a hero and why they fail ... using myths, fables and legends of well know leaders. Then we apply the modern theories of emotional intelligence(Goleman et al)to classic leadership models, wow what a difference.
This book on Piaget Theories taught us that when humans are learning something new, they tend to divide the task or experience into one of two schemes- assimilate it based on old experiences or create an entirely new scheme to deal with it. Piaget suggests that all new tasks have some emotional aspects to them and they are divided up in the mind of a follower/worker. Thus, the leader must learn to educate his subjects either by using acts of training, rewarding or inspiring his/her followers around these emotional realtiies. Once the leader/teacher understand the range of emotions a new direction or a change will cause, and they go from fear, distrust to reckless acceptance. For example, an emotion (hope, trust) may assist in the follower learning something new or if there is a negative emotion (fear, distrust, anger, etc), it becomes a barrier. Situationally, leaders must know, anticipate and act accordingly. If one practices that we humans are life long active builders of knowledge rather than just receivers of information then, it can be incorporated into techniques for mastering the concepts of group leadership.

The best break down of political economy ever!Review Date: 2008-02-11
Easy to read one does not need a college degree to understand the concepts in this book. The author breaks down these complex ideologies and theories into simple to understand descriptions. Important for all to read, and even the layman can understand fully the key terms that are being thrown around on the nightly news.
An excellent introduction to political economyReview Date: 2001-07-24
The 1st 2 chapters read very much like a text book and may be difficult to wade through for those with minimal backgrounds in economics and political science. But this should not discourage readers as Clark's discission of the 4 major schools of political economic thought--Classical Liberalism, Radicalism, Classical Conservatism, and Modern Liberalism--is excellent. Though relatively succinct and written at an "introductory" level, Clark does an excellent job of laying out the fundamentals of each of the 4 schools of thought as well as the evolution of thinking within each school through summary discussions of the "architects" of each school. He then offers a brief and very fair critique or each school of thought. For those unfamiliar with the diversity of political-economic thought, which is most people (and, sadly, certainly includes virtually everyone who majored or minored in "business school" economics in college), these 4 chapters alone make the book worthwhile reading .
But for most readers, the real forte of the book comes in Part III in which Clark examines the major issues in political economy today; such as, inflation, unemployment, poverty, inequality, labor, minorities (to include women within the political-economic arena), education, culture, the enviornment, and international trade. Within each of these areas, Clark identifies the arguments of each of the 4 schools of political economic thought in terms of what each sees as the roots of the issue, the nature of the issue today, and what should and/or should not be done about it.
For someone looking for a relatively brief examination of these issues, which gives a genuinely fair presentation of diverse and competing views, there simply is no other book published today. One important strenght of Clark's work is it does explode the myth of economics as a "science", as well as the myths of the discipline of economics being value free and not grounded in ideology, and the myth there is some kind of general consensus among economists.
Regardless of a person's political-economic ideological orientation, readers will become more aware and more appreciative of alternative and competing points of view. And they will be able to see more easily what passes for "economic" reporting and analysis in the news media and by government officials is little more than propaganda--the promulgation of the favored econmic world view as truth. This is extremely important because, even (especially) for those who agree with "mainstream" economic analysis, there are numerous dangerers in falling into the trap of believing the fundamental ideological/value questions of economics and the relationship between the economic and political system have been asked, answered, and agreed upon. Such tunnel vision is a prescription for disaster which Clark's book can help us avoid. So put on the hip boots; wade through the 1st two chapters (heavy but necessary); and then enjoy.
