The Stalingrad Move
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-21
Whenever we play this game under the Trumpington Variation rule, my playing partners always insists on making the Stalingrad move. Thus rendering my next move a passive-attacking strategy play of offering 'Pimblico', which always results in the next vocalization of 'Mornington Crescent'. Little did I know, until reading this book, that my move of 'Pimblico' should not be utilised because that station does have staffing level of more than six on any weekday, other than the 3rd Tuesday after Whitsun-the abreached rule is the 24th Andrews Rule, which also allows the player to play out of bounds as long as the ball is square to the center of the station he/she is trying to traverse. I now stand enlightingly corrected and counter my playing partners call of 'Stalingrad' with the counter aggressive call of 'Baker Street'(see the Pollinger 3rd Movement). Which totally floors all my playing partners with its unachieveable brilliance-I can only think of two or three greater plays in the history of the game (Spitak v Tromlins 1925-of course was the true defining moment in the games history, as long as I live I will never forget the day Spitak called out 'Hillingdon' to Tromlins call of 'Aldgate'. Tromlins expression said it all and it was little surprise he was never the same player after that moment).

The only Mornington Crescent Guide you'll ever need! Or get.

Well, I'll start out the game with a bold, unorthodox move: Lancaster Gate. Your turn, and please remember that choosing alternate Sunday-only stations are not valid in the Amazon.com championship versions of the game, that Aldwych Station, though closed, is still a valid choice when backed into one of Mr. Garden's patented cross-hatch ploys, and of course I shouldn't need to remind you that choosing Jubilee Line Extension stations is still regarded as hopelessly amateur; should you choose to counter with Canada Water, you will be met with derisive giggles. Your move.

If the above doesn't mean anything to you, you're not a fan of the bewildering game of Mornington Crescent, and this is not the book for you. Go pick up a Bill Oddie birding book instead. On the other hand, if the above inspired you to snap out "Gants Hill" with authority and a smirk, then sprint, don't crawl, to pick up the only *authorized* Mornington Crescent companion (all others are mere shadows).

Seriously (and at the risk of ruining the joke) this is a humor book based on the popular BBC radio quiz show "I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue." British quiz shows like these, far from being a challenge to ordinary citizens to answer tough trivia, are more frequently a showcase for celebrities to show off their comic skills (think "Whose Line is It Anyway" rather than "Who Want to Be a Millionaire"). By far the most cheer-eliciting segment of ISIHAC is "Mornington Crescent," a round-table game in which the panelists must name London Underground stations, and the first to name Mornington Crescent is the winner. Sound simple? Well, it would be...if there were truly any rules other than to be funny while doing so...

If you're a fan of BBC radio comedy and you're in on the joke, this book is a must have, with Mornington Crescent history, Q&As, recipes, profiles, short stories (Charles Dickens versus Lewis Carroll in an especially ruthless and deadly game of MC)--everything a serious player of the game needs to know.

Except the rules.

Well, you can't expect them to give away *all* the answers, can you?

I just discovered this series and was thrilled with it! Although I am a college student and far older than any of the main characters in this book, I absolutely loved "The Little Colonel" books. The story of "The Three Weavers" that was told in this book was wonderful. Every single girl ought to know that story. I plan to recommend this series, especially this particular book, to my younger sister. I only had one objection to "The Little Colonel" books: the fact that African American's are portrayed as being inferior to the whites. I know that it simply is because of the time period in which it was written, but I could not help being saddened every time I came across an instance of a black person being represented as lower than whites. Other than that, I found the story to be one of the best children's series I have ever read. Very, very wholesome entertainment.

I read this series -- and especially this book -- when I was abuot ten. As an adult, I collected early editions.
The series is politically incorrect and none of the issues would be relevant today.

But there's a real fascination about reading these books as an adult. I like to imagine growing up in that era and the innocent fun they had. We can realize how limited their options were, but some of their core values (integrity, keeping a brave and optimistic outlook) hold today.

The Littlest Tall Fellow not only addresses the concerns of children who may be small in stature, but also hits home for anyone who was the youngest in a family.
It speaks to the human spirit in all of us.

This is the greatest book for encouraging children to dream!

My 'bible'

Review Date: 2000-01-18
I have read many self-help books but this one is by far the most helpful in teaching us to see the real problems behind our struggling with life. Instead of a 'band-aid' approach that focuses on one problem at a time, Barry Ellsworth goes to the causes of our distress and teaches us what we need to do to heal the pain from our pasts. This book has been my 'bible' for the past ten years. I return to it time after time and it always helps.

Barry Ellsworth comes across simple, clear, and direct on the topic of how you can empower and reclaim your life. The focus is like a lot of the self-help books - self-love, having the "right" perspective on life, etc. The difference is that he is down-to-earth, concise, and direct. He relates on a very personal level from events of his own life which makes what he says credible. This book has become a handbook for me in how I can transform my life. The chapters are organized such that I can refer to specific areas that I have questions on plus the index is handy in the back. All the other books give more detail, stories, elaboration, etc. but this book has it all condensed into the essence of how to transform your life

Islanders fans: Here is proof Neil Smith is a phony turd.

Review Date: 2006-12-14
All the reactionary whining when Neil Smith was fired after 40 days by the Islanders means that no "experts" in the media bothered to read or remember this book. Neil Smith is a whiny dork who watched as Mike Keenan underminded him at every opportunity. Read this book and be happy.

A great way to relive the 1993-1994 Stanley Cup Season

A worthy summary of the Rangers cup winning season and subsequent failure. Not quite a behind the scenes look at the team but lots of interesting antecdotes the average fan (like me) would otherwise miss. Great insight into Mike Keenan and why his tactics worked for the Rangers (until game 4 vs the Devils). Also gives insight into why they don't work now. I read it in two days and would recommend it.

The book covers all known Luftwaffe units and the planes that saw service. The book offers very comprehensive and detailed information on codes and markings. Rare pictures are included. To make it the perfect book on the Luftwaffe however it should have been printed in color.

An invaluable reference for a Luftwaffe historian or modeler

This sing along CD is a companion to the book by the same title "Make a Joyful Noise!" The CD features songs to go along with and supplement the Bible stories in the book, which includes fun easy to do creative movement activities. The fourteen songs on the CD combine the musical gifts of Heather and Hannah Robbins. These songs help the child develop listening, language, vocabulary, and memory skills. Using movement activities with the songs helps the child grow in self expression, balance, coordination, problem solving, role playing, and in their motor skills. This is a truly remarkable teaching tool for worship and learning at the child's level.

His poems are intensely personal and clearly honest.

The first time I opened the cover of Manortown I did so with the intention of browsing to get a sense of the work. After reading the first poem, which begins with the line, "Manortown has bells," I was hooked. I read the next poem and the next and the next, savoring each experience, until I had read "At the Beginning of It, At the End of It," ironically the last poem.

The next day I lent the book to a colleague. She called the following day saying that she, too, had read all the poems and had been deeply moved. Since that time I have given this book as gifts to friends and acquaintances, some who are local, some who are transplants from Pennsylvania to other states, and some who are natives of other states. Their responses to the poetry have been very much like mine.

Barry Kukovich weaves threads of history and boyhood visions into a fabric which is narrative in texture but poetic in quality. His poems are intensely personal and clearly honest. Some of his scenes reveal secrets which are emotionally complex, holding the reader in the tension between childhood remembrances and adulthood truths. In Manortown the reader learns about the town, Pennsylvania's coal-mining past, and the author, but most of all, the reader learns about himself.

Endless pleasure
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-20
Like only the finest of art photography -- photography which truly transcends its function as document or record -- Randlett's images make you want to look, and look, and keep looking, in the same way as a fine drawing or painting. There are some pictures here which are all but abstracts, and bear comparison with the finest abstract work in other mediums. However, usually you know what the object is at which she pointed her camera, but you are never its prisoner, never find yourself asking "just where is that island?" Instead you find yourself dwelling on the new thing, the new world, she has made of that object -- whether a tree, or a bird, or light on the sea, or a cloud-blurred mountain -- the world to be explored right there on the paper, within the spaces and shapes there delineated or suggested. You don't say "what a beautiful place, let's go there"; instead you say, "what a beautiful world I am in, just sitting here poring over these shapes and shadows".

At times Randlett's work reminds me of certain Japanese or especially Chinese ink drawings of landscapes, of the kind that employs blurring and suggestion more than precise outlines; it has some of that same mysterious suggestiveness. But not all her images are of that kind; she can capture sharp lines and silhouettes as well. But even then she is creating a new place, not pointing to one somewhere else, on your travel map; and she's inviting you in -- here, right here, on this paper: come in and dwell.

Some of these images were included in her recent show at the Tacoma Art Museum. If that show is still open, I strongly recommend a visit. In any case, I recommend this book and the worlds in it. It opens the way to endless exploration and pleasure.

My husband and I stumbled upon Mary Randlett's photography exhibition at the Tacoma Art Museum. We were immediately awed by the beauty and power of her photography. Then I was stunned to see poems by Denise Levertov scattered among the photographs. I'd discovered and loved Denise's poetry a few years earlier. The powerful combination of these two women's visions brought me to tears in the middle of the exhibition. Mary's unique way of seeing and capturing light as it plays across the landscape is moving, beautiful, haunting. You will never regret purchasing this book.
