Very charming book. Brought back many memories of my old neighborhoods in Chicago. It was an interesting insight into John Wayne Gacys childhood. A good read.

I enjoyed reading this very personal and engaging true-life story about a simpler time in America. It tells of the reality beneath this nostalgic image, shedding light on the question of why, from this seemingly idyllic environment, an innocent child developed to become the unbelievably evil "killer clown".

Quality thinking for Academic Administrators
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-04
It seems some days that there are as many books available on the topic of leadership as there are leaders, all of them covering the same ground with one different twist, leadership from people that like Swiss cheese, or leadership as postulated through the random variables of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. In The Academic Administrator's Guide to Exemplary Leadership, you will find no trendy niche marketing approaches to leadership; it contains straight forward, to-the-point thinking on what works in leadership, placed in the context of higher education.
Kouzes and Posner describe their paperback as a "field guide to take along on your leadership journey." Based on their research begun in 1983, the book boils down the key components of successful leadership in an inspiring, yet levelheaded approach that takes its examples from the day-to-day realities of college administrators. This is a concise, readable, yet thoughtful book that would make an excellent addition to the orientation package of any new administrator. While some experienced readers may hold that the author's approach to these topics seems old hat and possibly even simplistic, this book can provide even experienced administrators a focus for critical self-reflection and renewal, which is crucial to any leader.

Repacking of a leadership classic

Kouzes and Posner are the coauthors of The Leadership Challenge, one of the classic leadership books. In this book, they have repackaged those ideas for an academic audience. While the ideas are not new, this recontextualization is very effective for applying them to the academic setting.

Rabbi Barry Marks gives all of us, Jews and Non-Jews, a wonderful pocketsize book about the Jewish way of life. Presented in a clear, concise manner, this book outlines the rich system of beliefs that compose the fabric of Jewish heritage in an informative, nonpreachy manner. As a practicing Catholic, I particularly enjoyed learning about "The Cycles of Life," chapter eight, in which Rabbi Marks explains the Jewish beliefs about afterlife, both the historical and present views. This tiny tome is quite a feat, summarizing a 6000 year history, provoking thought and understanding.

A rollicking retelling of the classic Brer Rabbit stories. In this adaptation of the Joel Chandler Harris stories, children and their lucky parents can watch the wily Brer Rabbit outsmart time and time again his predatory neighbors and prove that brains really are better than brawn. The difficult dialect of the Chandler Harris originals has been updated and simplified for modern readers, and these beautiful volumes (there are three books in the series) are brilliantly illustrated by award-winning artist Barry Moser. This book is a must-have; I can't imagine why it isn't a best-seller.

Five favorite narratives from the Uncle Remus series have been released in a stunning edition, Jump! The Adventures of Brer Rabbit.

Vigorously whimsical illustrations by master wood engraver Barry Moser decorate the folio size sheets. Happily for all Brer Rabbit continues to outwit Brer Fox, and Brer Terrapin again winds up the winner. Earmarked for all ages.

Having read aloud this series (Jump, Jump on Over, and Jump Again) six or seven years ago to my (then) Kindergarten and second grade children, I asked them recently "what were your favorite books when you were little?" And this book series came up as hands-down "read-aloud" winner. I remember that they were a joy to read aloud, and the children laughed and laughed. They were so sad when the last book was finished that I ended up buying and reading them Julius Lester's book as well. Beyond that, the stories are culturally important literature. Parents can feel good knowing that children are being exposed to a uniquely American folktale series.

This is a very charming book. Not only is there Chekhov's fine story about a lost dog getting involved in a circus act, but the illustrations are wonderful. Surely this is the way 19th Century St. Petersburg looked!

My daughter first found this book in the library when she was six, and it quickly became one of her favorites.

An Author's Perspective

As the author of the book I rather liked it.

I have known hundreds of Larry's and at least as many Barry's in the course of advising and financing companies over the past 40 years. They are the classic Mr. Inside and Mar. Outside partners who so frequently partner in early stage companies.

They are so very human and therefore have predictable reactions to the stimuli of business.

The purpose of using charactures of people I have repetitively encountered in business to convey that which Ihave learned is to make the lessons more understandable and even predictible once the personalities are understood by the reader. A Larry will almost always react as a Larry and the same for Barry.

I hope that many people will buy and benefit from this book. The wisdom offered is real and the lessons to be learned important.

My intent in writing the book was not to warn investors from investing in private companies but rather to help them do so better.

I wish readers well and welcome their input

A very useful guide to the complete works of this important Victorian architect. Particularly strong on his 'grand tour' of Europe in his early years, on the details of the Palace of Westminster and on his character. Nicely disproves the common belief that his works were simply a neo-gothic production line - he was far more thoughtful than that but was very much constrained by the taste of patrons. As far as I can tell this is the only work available on Barry. Please let me know if you know of others. If there are any criticisms of this book it is a lack of impartiality (ok, it is written by his son)and the fact that it is too contemporary - I'd like to read a later book that can set his work in historical context better. (perhaps given how out of fashion he later became that ain't such a good idea ?)

When I finished this lovely little book I sat there under my reading light for several minutes filled with the that rare satisfaction that some pieces of art lend you. These four poets are among my favorites but I learned so much about them in so little space and their poems came alive to me in an extraordinary way. I went back to my dusty shelves and resurrected them. The book rides on the shoulders of the poet who wrote it for she provides the quiet, direct intimacy that binds you to all of them. She does for each of them something that no award, and they all have many, could ever do and that is she brings them into your hearts. Moser's art adds additional beauty to it. Buy it, give it to people you care deeply about. Share with them the light.

Delightful Book

In addition to basic information about each lighthouse (such as when it was built, the location, and the type of equipment it uses) this delightful book presents brief but tantalizing stories about many of the structures. The color photos are also lovely.

Of course a book of this scope cannot present much information about each lighthouse, but the information it does present makes me want to search out more history associated with each one--and visit it!

The lighthouses are aranged by state and province, and even include some from Caribbean islands, which makes it easy for a traveler to add them to a planned trip. Information about the ones I have visited seems accurate, so I will trust this book when planning future trips.

Overall, this book is useful for the traveler and enjoyable for the browser.
