Invaluable assistance for those who spend time praying before Blessed Sacrament

Review Date: 2008-02-11
The re-emergence and spread of regular, if not perpetual, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in recent years is most encouraging sign of hope in the Church today, though as the nuns of Tyburn amongs others would no doubt remind us, it never was abandoned by some!

This booklet, compiled by the Australian lay apostle of Eucharistic Adoration, Christine McCarthy, brings together in a conveniently sized volume a wide selection of prayers, hymns, devotional and liturgical texts (from the traditions of both East and West) and passages from Sacred Scripture to assist those who spend time praying before Blessed Sacrament. Such is the breadth and the wealth of the material put together in this book that one could make a daily holy hour for many years before exhausting its abundance.

For those `new' to Eucharistic Adoration, the booklet provides some simple guidance. It also offers suggestions for preparation and thanksgiving before and after Holy Mass, and includes sections on our Blessed Lady, the priesthood and consecrated life, and one for children. It is richly illustrated throughout. It would make an excellent gift to place in the hands of a devout young person or for someone entering a seminary or religious order.

I The Lord Am With You Always is endorsed by the Archbishops of Sydney and of Perth, and bears the imprimatur of the former. For what it is worth, I add my commendation to theirs: no-one who opens this book in the hope of finding spiritual nourishment shall be disappointed.

I have used this book for Eucharistic Adoration during my Holy Hour and it is a profoundly meditative form of prayer. You are in total communion with Our Lord within one hour. I didn't want to leave the Chapel but I had to return to work. Our Chapel has copies in the pews for parishioners to use. The only way to purchase this book at the present time is to order it from London...I hope that Amazon can make it available for purchase as soon as possible! God bless all who read this!

These are great books. I am really not sure how otherwise to put it. I recently had a friend diagnosed with breast cancer and it's really hard to know what to say or do. Fanny's books are very well done and they are must reads for everyone whose lives have been touched by breast cancer or if you know someone who has breast cancer.

This series ( I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue) is one of the most popular ever broadcast in the United Kingdom. It appeals on many levels -- the quick wits of the panel; the double meanings implied in some of the answers; and in general just unoffensive fun which does not have to be censured for delicate ears. I travel by car frequently and for long mountainous distances, and these guys are my constant companions. I've gotten many curious looks from other travellers as I sat at a red light or a railroad crossing so obviously laughing out loud. If you are a fan of "play on words" and rapid repartee you will love I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, and will lobby the BBC to release more than the 9 programs they have so far shared with us!

What do you expect from a book of Limericks from the long running radio comedy show? Wordsworth?

These constitute the cutting edge of modern limericks from some of the best (or worst, depending whether you like puns etc) wordsmiths in the business. This is the ideal book to set beside your loo.

a riveting and invaluable expose
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.

"The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia" is abrilliant, riveting and invaluable expose that details the CIA's involvement in drug-running. Through McCoy's analysis, one can follow the CIA's drug-running trail from right after WWII, through the French Connection in Marseilles, to the golden triangle in Laos and Burma and on into Afghanistan.

"The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia" reveals the purpose behind the CIA's incolvement in drugs: at least since 1954 in Guatemala, the US has been involved in massive international terrorism throughout Central America. being clandestine, the CIA needed untraceable money and brutal thugs, so the CIA turned to narco-traffickers - like Manuel Noriega (long on the CIA payroll before his demise).

"The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia" remains one of the more important, relevant (in light of US involvement in the euphamism called a drug war in Columbia) yet obscure books of the previous quarter-century - a book that ultimately posits the question of whether the CIA, as an instrument of state policy, reflects the values of the American populace. Fascinating reading.

Academic study exposes CIA's involvement in Laos secret war
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 1997-11-10
This in-depth academic study researches the central role that opium plays in the economy, politics, and wars of the region. It follows the trial from the highlands of Laos, where the opium is grown and harvested by the Hmong tribespeople, to the Golden Triangle, where it is refined into heroin. Published in 1972, this was the first printed account of the USA's massive engagement in a "secret" war in Laos. It documented the use of CIA helicopters to bring Laotian opium to market in Vietnam (where, ironically, it was sold to addicted US soldiers.) This was done to finance weapons for the army of Hmong highlanders, being led by CIA "advisors", who were fighting the Laotian communists.

There was only one edition of this book; immediately after its first printing, the entire publisher was bought by the U.S. government, and all warehoused copies were destroyed. However, with a bit of luck it can still be found in used bookstores.

this is one of the greatest plays i have ever read/seen. i laughed so hard during act II that i almost could not continue. mark twain really hit something brilliant here and it is a shame it is not more well known. i am also a fan of humerous plays such as "the importance of being ernest" so if you like satire such as that, you will absolutely love this. also i greatly recommend seeing this at a playhouse if at all possible, it is spectactular on the stage!

Delightful bit of Fun from Mark Twain!

Review Date: 2004-10-13
I must preface my review with the truth that I am totally and hopelessly Twain obsessed. I won't say that only a Twain lover will "get" this play but it certainly wouldn't hurt! I enjoyed it immensely and laughed out loud many times. Theatre was one of Twain's passions and he struggled all his life to write a successful play with variable results. This effort is delightful!
I found the interactions between the two couples sweet and touching and the comeraderie between the group of artists was good natured and engaging. But the best part was the gender reversal which was the funniest part of the play. It is amazing that Twain wrote this upbeat and optimistic piece as he was clawing his way out of a deep depression after his daughters death. The introduction and afterward are fascinating, both produced by the excellent and much appreciated Bancroft Library Mark Twain Project. I can't wait to see what they publish next!!

If you are looking for lots of suggestions for revising that clearly target the six traits, this is the book for you. I use many of the suggestions in my high school classes, and students eat up the activities while truly improving their writing. Probably the most practical revising resource a teacher can own.

When I found out that Barry Gilmore had written another book, I had to own it. As a teacher, I have four criteria for professional books:
-- Does the author know more about the topic than I do?
-- Does the author have an engaging writing style?
-- Are examples provided?
-- Are there ideas that I can implement in my classroom?
This book meets all four. This is a practical book, but I would have read it for fun.

A MUST OWN dazzler for John Barry music lovers

JOHN BARRY: The Man with the Midas Touch gives the reader exactly what they are looking for! It is handsomely designed and beautifully realized as an informative and revealing musical biography and analysis of what sets this film composer's music above the rest.
Everything a fan could want has been laid out cleverly and with considerable care from never-before-published photos, memorabilia, posters, interviews and insights into what makes JB the gold standard for aural excellence.
Messers Geoff Leonard, Gareth Bramley and Pete Walker know their man!
These are the experts who have penned innumerable liner notes for Barry's CD releases over the years. These are the "go to" guys who not only recite chapter and verse of behind-the-scenes details, but, give an intimate portrait of the genuinely gifted composer at work in cinema.
The previous book: JOHN BARRY: A life in Music (out of print and highly sought-after for many years!) actually pales in comparison to this new career spanning examination of a composer, arranger, conductor, orchestrator and innovator of many trend-setting styles of music.
This in not a fanboy pastiche by any means!
John Barry himself has said that "Geoff Leonard knows my work better than I do." And he does.
Artists and Repetoire, sidemen, friends, directors, critics...all views are explored and examined.
This is no paparazzi tell-all. It is a work of journalistic acumen.
From the John Barry Seven through the dazzling five Academy Awards and concert performances; JOHN BARRY: the Man with the Midas Touch tells the story of a young, sensitive Yorkshire cinema owner's son who set his sights on composing for the silver screen as a small boy running the projectors in his father's cinema chain.
Any and every thing worth asking is covered in depth here.

As George Martin was for Apple, John Barry was for EMI. Alternately grooming talent, doing arrangements for the likes of
Chad and Jeremy, Annie Ross, Adam Faith; John Barry explored various markets and arrangements in search of the way to make a leap into film.
The unique pizzacato and lead guitar stylings which backed the pop star, Adam Faith, led to the golden opportunity: BEAT GIRL. It wasn't much of a film with beatniks and gang toughs posturing about luridly. Yet, as he would prove himself able to do countless times in the future, John Barry found a hook! A melodic central theme to showcase the drama and emotional core of the performances is the Midas Touch!
This opportunity gave JB what he was looking for in spades! A pre echo of the James Bond years can be found in what he produced for BEAT GIRL.
Dr.NO, the first James Bond film, needed a signature theme for the central character of spy, womanizer, snob and brawler. Monty Norman (music hall dandy) had the job already. Yet, the film felt like a "mining disaster" with the theme Norman had penned. John Barry's popular success with BEAT GIRL and his HIT and MISS theme success signalled a way to save the day. The result speaks for itself! Without even having screened the film; working from his familiarlity with the comic strip of James Bond, John Barry fashioned an arrangement and re-imagining of Monty Norman's "dum ditty dum dum" scrawl on a slip of paper! An instantly riveting electric guitar and bebop theme for JAMES BOND launched Sean Connery, a million dollar franchise and John Barry into a wild ride and non-stop career with ZULU, BORN FREE, QUILLER MEMORANDUM, KING RAT, THE KNACK, SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON for riches, applause and quiet celebrity.
Want to know more? READ THE BOOK!
This book tells the whole story from prelude to postlude in a precise, no-nonsense style every fan of John Barry will rush to own before this too goes out of print and into the collector cult status of the previous tome.
Get it while you still can!

John Henry is one of the best Rabbit Ears titles - which is saying a lot. BB King is wonderful; Denzel Washington is wonderful. I'm not writing this for me - but if my 8 year old goes to sleep to it every (I mean, make sure you rewind that tape) night, then it is a wonderful book

Reading with the King

That's Denzel Washington (not Eric Clapton) teaming his prodigious talents with those of blues legend B.B. King in this powerful retelling of the classic American legend. This is another treasure from Rabbit Ear productions: a beautifully illustrated book that can be read on its own, or with the included cassette. Go for the cassette first: You'll be treated to Denzel Washington's warm, rich, folksy, awe-struck, conversational narration.

"So y'all listen up, `cause I'm gonna tell you the guaranteed, gold plated, ninety-nine-point-nice percent truth about John Henry."

Then, enjoy the inimitable riffs of B.B. King, as he and his guitar (presumably "Lucille") sing out with the pure, clear, authenticity of the blues: "My name is John Henry. I'm a born natural man. I was born one morning with a hammer in my hand . . . " This is collector material.

John Henry's triumph defends the dignity and perseverance of human labor against the encroaching machine. In its own small way, with a low-tech assist from the aural majesty of Washington and King, this volume preserves and extends the pleasures of the written page.
