Even you are familiar with the principle of flying, the book can provide new insight in every flying aspect. It uses different point of view to elucidate the basic theory. I am sure you can get more understanding about what you have learnt in flying.

Schiff's wisdom and clarity are tough to appreciate when you don't know anything about flying. Save this one until after you've soloed at the very least. Then reread it once per year. And don't forget Volume 2 when you can learn how to fly the North Atlantic and also how to ditch if your flight to Europe doesn't go as planned...

As a physicist and private pilot, having read a few dozens of books on aviation, I find this book (in fact the two volumes I and II) the best aviation reading I have ever come across. Strongly recommended even if you think you have read it all.

Review Date: 2002-04-24
Rick Barry wrote eight books covering eight NBA seasons, basically for general managers and coaches. They provide scouting reports by one of the games 50 greatest players. Written in B-Ball jargon Barry provides readers with a keen insight into athletic talent and its application or mis-application whichever the case.

After perusing all eight books, I looked up the first five players drafted in every year back into the late seventies. Lo, I found that unless your team had one of the first three players taken in the entire draft your team did not win the NBA title. Furthermore I concluded that, after 13 years of holding season tickets for the Bullets, the teams that won most often have 8-9 good players vs those that lose who have only 3-4 good players. But, the pivotal player who carries the team must be present for ultimate success to be realized.

To draw a comparison, I learned years ago that there were one million high school football players. These reduced to 70,000 college players and then condensed further to 1200 NFL players. These remaining players averaged 3-4 years in the league, but the top 100-125 played for 10-15 years. The team who had the most of these head-and-shoulders better players won the championship. I believe this model holds true in all sports at all levels. It fits with a basis tenet of chaos theory and also with Mike Hart's book "the 100: A Ranking of the 100 most influential people in history." Thus I maintain that it's a model for how free markets and their unfettered, spontaneous ordering arrange civilizations. This leads into why western civilization has succeeded in raising living standards more for the common man in contrast to command and control economies.

Too bad Rick B. and Jordan Cohn stopped after the '97 season. It was great stuff for contemplative fans.

Far too many people who know nothing about basketball teams or basketball players write opinions about the game. For serious fans of the game, Rick Barry offers in-depth analysis of every NBA player, all of the college draftees and potential free agents, many CBA types, and a hanful of potential foreign players who might break into the NBA. Certainly nothing compares, either in scope, depth, or accuracy of insight. Where many publications regurgitate last year's statistics, Barry tells you why Gary Payton is such a valuable defensive player or what is missing in Chris Weber's game. With this book, you will have a new appreciation of individual players and a better understanding of the story behind the statistics, the story the statistics do not always tell you. Rick Barry also provides a unique look at player statistics, giving fans the real shooting percentage of each player (a formula that factors in three point shooting) or assist to turnover ratios or blocks per minute. The only thing missing from this book is a player's career statistics and an analysis of the teams. These are hardly reasons to skip this publication, however. In fact, you will want to buy a new copy each year and follow with Rick the improvement and progress of your favorite players

Barry's book is the standard against which we should judge all annual previews. Unlike many of his ilk, Barry doesn't rely on a rehashing of scoring and rebounding averages to articulate a player's strengths and weaknesses, but rather, Barry provides very intelligent insights into almost every player--including CBA and European wannabes--who will play in the upcoming season. I have purchased several of these--granted, I'm a basketball junkie--and enjoy following the career development and decline of various players. I just wish Rick published the book twice a year.

One Hell of a Good Read

What do you get when an atheistic science fiction writer checks himself into a Catholic rehab center? You get St. Mary Blue, one hell of a read. Good drama requires conflict, and Jake, the cynical atheist, adjusting to the St. Mary Rehab Center offers plenty of conflict.

Relying on his wry sardonic wit, he copes with institutional food at the "Constipated Eagle" and fellow patients like Snake, the biker, and Elliot, the sanctimonious Episcopal priest. Along the way the Angela, Jake's head councilor, is transformed from his chief inquisitor to his first real hero.

Tension builds as Jake prepares for family week when his strong yet vulnerable wife, Ann, will confront him with the thoughtless and dangerous behavior that led him to St. Mary's.

Will Jake be among the center's successful graduates or will he succumb to his addictions? I don't want to give the ending away, but the book is somewhat autobiographical and judging from Barry B. Longyear's web site, he and his lovely wife Jean are living happily ever after in Maine. I like happy endings and I like St. Mary Blue.

One author's journey from denial to health.

This is Barry B.'s journey through drug and alcohol detox, thinly disguised as fiction. For anyone who has ever wondered about this process, the personal stories, justifications, and revelations may be more than you bargained for; for those of us who have had some experience with rehab it will probably cause painful memories to resurface. Longyear is a dab hand at breathing life into characters and making situations ring true. You will want to stay with this book to find out who survives, who "re-tread", and who just can't make it without their addictions. It's worth trying to find!

Review Date: 2001-12-03
This book is a chronicle of Barry Longyear's experience in a drug and alchohol rehab, written as a fictional work. It is a gutsy, no-holds-barred account of the roller coaster ride that is detox and recovery. Longyear, a die-hard atheist, writes beautifully of the struggle to find "a power greater than yourself" to make the program work. The characters are hilariously funny and poignant, witty and emotionally wretching at the same time. The plot draws you into their lives so that you root for the ones who make it and cry for the ones who do not. Longyear stresses addiction as a disease, not an easy or popular concept for "normal" people, but a true one nevertheless. This is as real and honest a book about addiction as they come, and I love it. Barry Longyear is a superb science fiction writer (see The God Box and Sea of Glass as examples) but here he shines as his own biographer. Humor and pathos were never so expertly combined.

This book is both powerful and painful to read--but I couldn't stop. This is for anyone who wants insight into the human condition--especially the condition known as addiction. Barry Longyear is perhaps the most under-appreciated writer in SF, maybe because all his works are about people. In this one, there is no science fiction, just people. You don't have to be an addict, in recovery, or any of those things to appreciate this (I'm not) --just being human is sufficient.

When you can't call for help.

I'm not sure what prompted me to read this book. Take a look at that cover art, not very inspirational. But it is written by Longyear and his work is usually good. It's not that this book is full of adventure or has a rich plot line. It doesn't even have exotic locations or lots of sex. What it does have, in truck loads, is empathy for the human condition. The main character is Jacob Randecker. He is a thinly veiled version of the author himself. They say that autobiographies are usually crap but then they also say write what you know. Whatever the case this book is undeniably excellent.

Jacob is an addict. He is addicted to alcohol and prescription medications. But then that's the most common kind. He doesn't think that he needs help but his wife and his friends, (the ones he has left), are adamant that he does. They use all of the pressure that they can, to get him to go to a rehab center called Saint Mary's. This is an actual hospital in the U.S.

The novel takes us through the program with Jacob and his group. We come to love Jake and each of his group. We also fall for the members of the hospital staff that we meet. It is that sort of book. I hope writing this book was cathartic for Longyear because reading it sure was for me.

I want to leave you with a small section from the dust jacket that I think may have helped my decision to read this book:
- One third will make it the first time around.
- One third will have to try again.
- One third are already dead. It just takes them a while to lie down.

This bio gets right down to the heart of the person and what he had to go through. Ryno was an incredable H.S athlete. I liked the fact that he revealed the reason(s) why he retired. The only thing wrong with the book is the fact that a short time after its relese, he came back, leaving the book with an open ending so to speak.

Dear All -
I just inished reading "Shaping A New Image" by Barry Lycka, This is a delightful read that definitely focuses you on a
number of practice development related issues. Although aimed at those developing a cosmetic practice, the practice management pearls would be a benefit to all physicians, not only dermatologiststs, plastic surgeons, facials plastic surgeons and occuloplastic surgeons, though they would probably benefit the most.
A practical down to earth handbook of practice management and development tips, pearls and guidelines, it should be required reading in reidency and fellowship training programs. Well done, Dr. Lycka!

This is a must read at any stage of your career. I was amazed at the depth of coverage and the clarity of Barry's problem solving. After finishing the book I don't know how he found time to put all this sage advice into print. His golden rules in the summary are good reminders and worth the price of the book alone.

Dr. Lycka visits a very important subject either not well taught in medical schools or not taught at all. The business of cosmetic medicine need no longer be learned by innuendo and hearsay. Here, in 304 pages, he spells out information which takes at least ten years off the learning curve. He does this in a clear and precise manner yet includes the humor so often missing in similar texts, if you can find them. I have put into practice some of Dr.Lycka's approaches which have already paid dividends in my office. These more then cover the cost of this reasonably priced book.

One survivor was a close relative of mine... At least one story of WWII survival won't be lost. Dealing with the Japanese who were strafing survivors is enough of an ordeal but to also have to contend with sharks, food and water deprivation, and watching your shipmates perish while waiting to be rescued for several days is more than most of would been able to endure. Well written and factual without a lot of embellishment.

My great Uncle Bob was a wonderful man. His modesty, in life, allowed none of us to know the real tragedy he had faced in his life. He was a true American hero and I'm very proud of him. This book cleared up all the rumors I had ever heard about and the bit's and pieces of history we as kids heard while growing-up, here in the Pacific Northwest. If you like good reading and love our American Navel history, you will love this book. The men, my uncle's friends, should never be forgotten for all they did and how many of their lives ended on this tragic day. This is a good book for all ages to read. Thank You.

This well written easy reading book details how a quiet young man from the farm became one of the most triumphant military heroes, surviving an ordeal that few have experienced. Because of this generation's trademark of getting the job done and not talking about heroic events, I was left wondering how many more tales are left untold? Friedman tells a story that helps those with little knowledge of military craft and world history understand and even become interested in knowing more. He adds an emotional element that may only be told by those who have lived through that time in history.
Not to be missed is the excellent bibliography, including excellent websites for more exploration.

A fascinating account of the crew of the Meredith during WWII who having first picked up survivors from another ship, the Vireo, then endured not only the sinking of their own ship, but the strafing of their liferafts by enemy planes.

One of the most poignant moments in the book was when a wounded officer in one of the rafts became disoriented. He stood up and said, "I'll think I'll go and get some cigarettes." Then he dove into the water, swam away and was never heard of again.

You can't help your amazement at the courage of these brave men. They just did not give up. When they faltered, someone always rose up as a leader to remind them of what they had to do.

For instance, the wounded were given space in the liferafts and the able-bodied men were in the water hanging on to side of the rafts. When a school of sharks began circling them, the terrified men scrambled into the rafts and, overloaded, they began to sink.

"Wes Singletary, the young bosun's mate, yelled for the frantic men to back off. 'Hell,' he shouted, 'They're nothing but sand sharks. They won't hurt you. Watch me get one.' He dove into the pack, kicking and spashing until the sharks dispersed."

We should not ever lose these stories of heroism. They are a valuable heritage for they remind us of what ordinary Americans are capable of when our freedom is threatened. You would think a book about a ship sinking and men enduring incredible hardship would be sad and dark, but instead it is filled with such good will and courage that it is inspiring. It helps us remember who Americans really are.

Ben Geller and Bob Slater are the one and two snipers on a small town Oregon police Special Response Team. They don't get along. The relationship between them deteriorates dangerously. Geller is in a boring marriage. He has a six year old daughter. He seeks excitement in the company of an attractive female officer who has trained under him. The team is called out for a hostage situation where a young father has threatened to kill his infant daughter because he believes that she is the devil. Slater has the opportunity to shoot the father at the critical time and doesn't. Geller does. But his shot passes thru the wife's shoulder on the way to the primary target. Slater tries to cover up his inaction by saying the father had no gun at the time. As the plot continues Slater plans a hostage/ransom caper that will net him $15 million. He seems to have pulled it off. But, Geller puts together all the clues that lead to his nemesis. When Geller tries to tell his superiors his suspicions they think he has gone off the deep end. Slater kidnaps Geller's wife and daughter and leaves them to die in a sewer tunnel. Geller shoots Slater four times causing him to confess as to how he murdered his partner in the $15 million caper, and disclose the location of Geller's family. He then commits suicide. Geller is then put to trial by a liberal prosecutor for torturing the confession out of Slater. Naturally, Geller is not convicted. An auspicious first book from the author.

Author Barry Ozeroff in his debut novel "Sniper Shot" takes the reader for a real thrill ride filled with intrigue and a series of unexpected twists. His book has all the markings of becoming a best seller. It has an intelligent plot and great characters that the author has done a good job fleshing out for the reader. This book is not filled with lots of moral messages but it is full of pure exciting entertainment adventure. This is a man's kind of book that can be read and enjoyed equally by a woman.

My son is a police officer, so I had some idea of what that job is like. However, I did not have a clue as to what it might be like for officers on a special response team such as a sniper. The author writes with much authority and seems to understand the emotional liabilities that occupation might have on men under stress. The dialog is done well and does not feel contrived. This is a good old fashion adventure thriller to read and kill an afternoon or a night. Great suspense novel! A must read book!

I'm guilty...I spent nearly an entire day to read the entire book in one sitting. I just couldn't put the book down. While I was not too surprised by the twists and turns I was captivated by the action and the character development. I was fully engrossed by this book, so much that I had to go hug my wife several times and tell her I loved her afterwards because I felt guilty just reading about Ben's actions in this book. I felt similar to the time I watched two complete seasons of the Sopranos in one setting! Anyway, I definitely can't wait until his next book.

If you ever wanted an education about te craft of being a
sniper this is the book to read.Ozeroff calls upon his experience as a sniper to tell an exciting story.
The sniper squad is based in Portland Oregon.Your two primary characters are Ben Geller and Bob Slater.Geller is the primary sniper despite Slater's being a world class long distance shooter.Slater lacks the discipline and character to be the
primary sniper. They are both members of the Special Response Team. They are bitter rivals as well.
You are taken into several sniper situations involving the two main characters. It makes for an entertaining read. You finally are taken to a showdown between the twi snipers. One of the men is honest while the other man is a theif and basically
dishonest. To say the least this story has an exciting finish
This is a very good book. You will enjoy reading it.
