Research on DHA alone makes this a valuable book!

I went on the zone diet for years before going raw....I read this while researching a weight loss book I am writing. I wish I had read it years ago! The valuable insights about how vegans and mothers and AMERICANS in GENERAL are deficient in DHA, a critical fat for memory and eyesight, is astounding! The most fascinating part of the book is how Sears gives credit to fish oil for the evolution of man to Cro-Magnon 40,000 years ago. But now we are DEvolving as we have less DHA than ever in our diet. I am now on a mission to make people aware of this nutrient.
I wish that Barry would give vegan or at least vegetarian options for his meal plans, as eating meat is simply not sustainable for the masses, nor is it necessary. At least he does mention algae as an alternate source for DHA.
As usual, the book is filled with scientific nuggets to educate the reader. I love how he details the importance of getting pharmaceutical grade fish oil as opposed to the kind you might find at a health store or Costco's.

One of the most important Medical finds in Nutrition!

I have survived a most certain terminal cancer. In fact the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston Texas, says that I'm the only one to have survived in the whole world.

But, as an aftermath, I have severe chronic pain because my brain has rewired itself due to the horrible pain I went through fighting the cancer. The condition is referred to as the Gate Theory. It now can be seen on MRI's. It took me 6-months to find the right doctor to treat it. He's been a pain specialist for 17 years and belongs to a group of doctors who rely on "MD Evidenced Nutrition" to understand what "natural" things work.

He put me on a heavy dose of Morphine to counter the pain, but he also put me on Fish Oil, not just any fish oil, but the oil referred to in this book, and I started thinking better and have taken on some minor work as a result. It's almost been a miracle.

Long_chain-fatty-acid-3, pharmaceutical grade, has done wonders. Because of this book I now understand why.

Many doctors assisted Dr. Sears in the writing of this book so that civilians, like me, can understand it. It's not a "fad" book at all. Just look in the back and you will see over 100 pages of clinical references backing up what Dr. Sears states in the book.

It's a must have to stay well and a must have to survive a serious illness.

excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production

The Omega Rx Zone, by Barry Sears is an excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production. Dr. Sears successfully translated volumes of leading edge biochemical research into an explanation non-researchers can comprehend, with some sustained effort.

Other books explain the fundamental Omega 6/Omega 3 essential fatty imbalance, but most fail to explain how increased Eicosapentanoic Acid (EPA) can inhibit excess inflammatory prostaglandin production, by down regulation of the 5 delta desaturase enzyme. In addition Dr. Sears explains how decreasing Arachidonic Acid levels reduces production of numerous inflammatory leukotrienes, produced by LOX 5 and LOX 15.

More importantly, Sears explains how increasing EPA and Decosahexanoic Acid (DHA) can dramatically reduce symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, Depression, Osteoarthritis, Emphysema, Alzheimers Disease, High Blood Pressure, Atherosclerosis and other disorders. Sears provides many anonymous case histories illustrating patient improvements with high dose, pharmaceutically distilled fish oil.

Sears also explains cultural variations in essential fatty acid intake which correlate with depression and suicide rates. The Omega Rx Zone is a surprisingly readable explanation of some complex biochemistry and immunology.

Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil by Barry Sears- A somewhat difficult read (too many medical terms) but there are also visual aids that simplify the message and get right to the point. There are obviously many benefits to Fish Oil- I ordered Dr. Sear's recommended oils in both liquid and gel form and after only 3 weeks have noticed a huge improvement in mood. Am hoping to realize weight loss and other health benefits for my family with continued use. Recommend this book, which was recommended to me by a trusted psychiastrist friend.

Excellent omega-3 research

This book gives a complete and easy to understand of the complex way in which the EPA&DHA long-chain fatty acids influence the hormonal system, and how their lack in the diet affects the body. The author explains why eating fish is not the best way to get omega-3's, mainly because of the heavy chemicals that fish accumulate in their tissues. He describes the differences between different types of fish oil and why (in his opinion) pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is the best way to supplement omega-3. He explains which blood test will tell you how healthy you are.

There is also a very interesting hypothesis on how a diet rich in omega-3 helped the development of the human brain in its early stages of evolution.

There are detalied explanations of how diseases such as cancer and auto-immune illnesses are related to long-chain omega-3's. The author explains how "silent" (cell) inflammation is the cause of many (if not most) major diseases today, especially chronic conditions.

There are explanations of the relationship between omega-3's and emotional well-being, as well as how they improve mental abilities.

As a sidenote, apparently there is currently only one brand on the market that satisfies the author's standards. They have a comparison table on their website showing how their brand offers the most omega-3 per dollar (to convince that it is worth the high price)--but they only compare with certain brands--and I know of at least another highly respected fish oil brand that offers even more omega-3's for half the price. So the only argument left is that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is completely free of contaminants, whereas other types of oil are not. This argument is in my opinion not very strong, because there are enough brands (such as the one I was talking about before) that have levels of contaminants so small that they are not detectable in a lab--therefore which are really of negligible risk (compared for instance with the toxic substances found in our tap water).

Nevertheless, the in-depth analysis on the remarkably positive effects of EPA&DHA's on health is excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

I value a great book on spirituality when it has the essence of Truth, simplicity and clarity. This is the kind of book I wish to give to everyone. Very rare a spiritual book can and should be given to anyone. This one can be easily accepted by avid spiritual seeker and anyone having the desire to evolve by starting with oneself. It give such understanding to all the unanswered questions we have related to the lost of abundant joy,our childhood was so rich once.

If you like this book, I would also recommend Andrew Cohen's book, Embracing heaven & earth for one more easy read, yet, to the point keys to Truth.

Enjoy!

This is probably one of the best books by Barry Long I have read, it makes you start thinking about the nature of you, and how much we are programmed by soceity. Maybe think is not a good word to use because barry long thinks that thinking is a psychological disease. So read this book, start to meditate and stop to think, that the way to penetrate into your own being.

Enjoy the journey

Barry Long relentlessly hammers you with Truth. When I read this book, I periodically flipped as he pointed out the obvious to the oblivious with deadly accuracy. From guiding us not to tell our sad story, through the crazed media minefields, to the slithering souls waiting to incarnate, Master Long will do something to you. It is up to you to find out what....

No compromise in Truth

I haven't finished this book yet but am blown away by Barry's directness, integrity and the deep resonance of Truth in his words. This truly is Wisdom for the Western mind. No gurus, no mantras, no spiritual baggage - just the Truth, straight and simple. How the world needs this now....

But Barry's message is only for those who are ready to hear it. I imagine his uncompromising directness and 'zero tolerance' spirituality will deter those who are not prepared for it. Not many people seem ready to hear that they've no right to be unhappy, or that they're entirely responsible for their unhappiness.

A brilliant book. Thank you so much Barry Long.

Barry Long's words have got a quality that penetrated me deeply. i found that even when i had finished this book, I kept going over what he had said and saw that it was all the truth. I've never heard anyone talk about the personality like this before, at first i was intrigued. After a while it actually gets a little uncomfortable, it made me look at myself so deeply, more deeply than i ever have before. It gave me insight to how my emotions really work and after reading this I no longer feel as though there is some force beyond me that controls my life and makes me unhappy. This book changed me! d I'm amazed by how much freer i am, it really works! Who doesn't want to be happier? Everyone should read this book, it's absolutely brilliant. Barry must be either totally enlightened or a genius.

I have read lots and lots of books by awakened spiritual masters, but Barry Long reveals original thought I have not found written anywhere else. He began writing a book about the origins of all the martial arts but soon abandoned it because the information revealed took him on a journey into the origins of man and the universe. I could not put this book down. It held me spellbound to the end. Read it and believe it..... or not.

It is a difficult book to read. It is complex. It deals with many fundamental issues and provide views and explanations which are often far away from our (at least my) understanding and experience.
Still I found many responses which are relevant to me and I bet that, if we would make an interview to 1000 readers, everyone would reply he/she has got insights on different aspects: basically on what was relevant to him/her.
So that if you want to figure everything out cognitively of what Barry Long is telling you....no hope.
It is not a book for understanding, it is an exploration of a space of possibilities: an amazing and fascinating journey...which is going to tickle something within you, whatever it will be.

A Modern Spiritual Masterpiece

Review Date: 2005-01-09
In what is, for me, the most profound book ever written, Barry Long tackles the question of our origins from the vantage point of the spiritual master and has produced what many regard as this influential spiritual teacher's finest work.

After quickly dispatching scientifc speculation and religious exegis as failed attempts at explaining our origins, Barry turns to traverse ground sign posted by the creation myths of many cultures before he shifts into gear and takes the reader on a journey through creation and beyond the universe.

With a sure hand, Barry leads the reader in stillness and nothingness deep within the layers of mind or the unconscious. There, the reality of external space or the sense perceived world and the present purpose of life on earth are encountered in all their transcendent beauty and magnificence.

Compelling and energetically powerful, any attempt to summarise this book is hopeless, conceptualising and destroying. This is a life-changing book.

The only way to comprehend this book is to accept it as a myth, like you would perhaps read the story of Atlantis. It will take much time to absorb what is said, so read with patience and in small doses if it overwhelms you. The book presents the myth of the origins on the universe and mankind, and is the cornerstone of Barry Long's mystical teachings. Barry takes us on a journey through the mist of time (and before time) deep into our own consciousness, and gives us a glimpse into the mind of God. Having read piles and piles of books on theoretical physics, psychology, religion, spirituality and philosophy, I was surprised at how remarkable and refreshing the book was in its view of the human condition. Recommended for everyone to read.

The Cosmic Myth

Whether or not I "liked" this book is irrelevant! The fact is that it is helping to awaken me from the self-ish ignorance of my mind, our society, our culture, and our evolutionary history. Having already read it several times through, with a still mind, it has en-lightened several spirit-ual Ideas in my consciousness. This work is nothing less than the mythic revelation of the cosmos in contemporary scientific language. It is the timeless LOGOS in the language of our times; A psycho-spiritual Master-piece; The Word of God written through man the master.

Mr. Long's words guide the still mind and present consciousness on an inward mytho-scientific journey through the habitual ignorance of the selfish psyche back to its divine origins. I have not yet completed this journey and will continue to read it until I do, but I have realized the Idea of what Mr. Long is doing. From this place of love and truth I commend this book to you. You may not "like" it, but if you are ready it will help to enlighten your consciousness and reveal some original truth to you.

This is the definitive book regarding John Lennon. He reviews almost every song he wrote with or without Paul McCartney, which alone is worth the price of admission. In addition to that, he provides insights into his personal philosophies and world views. One could call it the perfect companion to the recent Beatles Anthology book. Crucial reading. How sad he had to die a little over 2 months after these interviews were conducted. Unfortunately out of print, do yourself a favor and try an out of print book search; you won't regret it.

I first read this book back in 1983, to gain a little insight of John...and it quickly became my favourite book. Although I don't think Yoko was or is everything he thought, this was a man who truly loved his wife, and believed with his whole heart and soul in their marriage and life together. He was enjoying making music again, so much (this interview was done in September of 1980) and was looking forward to the future...hoping he'd be there with us. His love for his music, his wife, his sons, and even the Beatles are all there. He gives his opinions on every subject he can think of, both positive and negative, in his usual witty, straight-to-the-point manner that we all know him for. The interviewer did a great job, and was clearly a man who admired John Lennon as much as I do. He did a great job in this book, and it is my absolute favourite, out of all of my collection. Anyone who wants a peek into what John thought and felt and wanted you to know, should read this book...you will treasure it as I do.

The stories in the book aren't anything "Special" As some might say but they are extremely entertaining. If you seen the first movie with Dutch as the main character you'll get to know his brother. I won't spoil anymore but the fight between him and Predators is quite entertaining and for years ago the art is quite good.

For this price you get so much is worth it. This is for both comic fans and predator fans alike!

This book is a strong compliment to Lane's earlier book, AFTER THE END. I highly recomend both, but this title will be less useful to those who have not read the earlier book. While AFTER THE END contained theory, activity suggestions, and limited samples, the Tool Box is largely activities. It contains many useful ideas, most applicable accross grade levels 2-12, addressing the difficult problem of teaching genuine REVISION , rather than simply re-typing or editing for conventions.

As a Middle School Language Arts teacher, I use several of the activities suggested in this volume to expand my kids work and our vocabulary for talking about writing. I hope to use more activities next year, as there are too many to take on all at once. Some are so simple that my students could teach them.

This is not a 'work sheet' book. These are activities that you will need to do with your kids as part of your writing program.

The book is full of wonderful mini-lessons which can be adapted to many different levels. I teach 6th grade, but have recommended it to many younger grade teachers in my building and they love it too. These teachers have not read After the End, but they still able to use the activities with their children and see progress.

A paradigm for free markets and assembling winning teams

Review Date: 2002-04-24
Rick Barry wrote eight books covering eight NBA seasons, basically for general managers and coaches. They provide scouting reports by one of the games 50 greatest players. Written in B-Ball jargon Barry provides readers with a keen insight into athletic talent and its application or mis-application whichever the case.

After perusing all eight books, I looked up the first five players drafted in every year back into the late seventies. Lo, I found that unless your team had one of the first three players taken in the entire draft your team did not win the NBA title. Furthermore I concluded that, after 13 years of holding season tickets for the Bullets, the teams that won most often have 8-9 good players vs those that lose who have only 3-4 good players. But, the pivotal player who carries the team must be present for ultimate success to be realized.

To draw a comparison, I learned years ago that there were one million high school football players. These reduced to 70,000 college players and then condensed further to 1200 NFL players. These remaining players averaged 3-4 years in the league, but the top 100-125 played for 10-15 years. The team who had the most of these head-and-shoulders better players won the championship. I believe this model holds true in all sports at all levels. It fits with a basis tenet of chaos theory and also with Mike Hart's book "the 100: A Ranking of the 100 most influential people in history." Thus I maintain that it's a model for how free markets and their unfettered, spontaneous ordering arrange civilizations. This leads into why western civilization has succeeded in raising living standards more for the common man in contrast to command and control economies.

Too bad Rick B. and Jordan Cohn stopped after the '97 season. It was great stuff for contemplative fans.

A must have book.

Far too many people who know nothing about basketball teams or basketball players write opinions about the game. For serious fans of the game, Rick Barry offers in-depth analysis of every NBA player, all of the college draftees and potential free agents, many CBA types, and a hanful of potential foreign players who might break into the NBA. Certainly nothing compares, either in scope, depth, or accuracy of insight. Where many publications regurgitate last year's statistics, Barry tells you why Gary Payton is such a valuable defensive player or what is missing in Chris Weber's game. With this book, you will have a new appreciation of individual players and a better understanding of the story behind the statistics, the story the statistics do not always tell you. Rick Barry also provides a unique look at player statistics, giving fans the real shooting percentage of each player (a formula that factors in three point shooting) or assist to turnover ratios or blocks per minute. The only thing missing from this book is a player's career statistics and an analysis of the teams. These are hardly reasons to skip this publication, however. In fact, you will want to buy a new copy each year and follow with Rick the improvement and progress of your favorite players

This is another in a continuation of books on all the available players between the NBA and the developmental league one-step below. As always, it's excellent.

A paradigm for free markets and assembling winning teams

Good stuff.

Offers the depth about the players in the NBA no other book does. Every year completely updated ratings on almost every NBA players' game. If you are interested in the NBA this is an annual must-buy.

The best book on NBA basketball players ever.

Barry's book is the standard against which we should judge all annual previews. Unlike many of his ilk, Barry doesn't rely on a rehashing of scoring and rebounding averages to articulate a player's strengths and weaknesses, but rather, Barry provides very intelligent insights into almost every player--including CBA and European wannabes--who will play in the upcoming season. I have purchased several of these--granted, I'm a basketball junkie--and enjoy following the career development and decline of various players. I just wish Rick published the book twice a year.

One Hell of a Good Read

What do you get when an atheistic science fiction writer checks himself into a Catholic rehab center? You get St. Mary Blue, one hell of a read. Good drama requires conflict, and Jake, the cynical atheist, adjusting to the St. Mary Rehab Center offers plenty of conflict.

Relying on his wry sardonic wit, he copes with institutional food at the "Constipated Eagle" and fellow patients like Snake, the biker, and Elliot, the sanctimonious Episcopal priest. Along the way the Angela, Jake's head councilor, is transformed from his chief inquisitor to his first real hero.

Tension builds as Jake prepares for family week when his strong yet vulnerable wife, Ann, will confront him with the thoughtless and dangerous behavior that led him to St. Mary's.

Will Jake be among the center's successful graduates or will he succumb to his addictions? I don't want to give the ending away, but the book is somewhat autobiographical and judging from Barry B. Longyear's web site, he and his lovely wife Jean are living happily ever after in Maine. I like happy endings and I like St. Mary Blue.

This book is a chronicle of Barry Longyear's experience in a drug and alchohol rehab, written as a fictional work. It is a gutsy, no-holds-barred account of the roller coaster ride that is detox and recovery. Longyear, a die-hard atheist, writes beautifully of the struggle to find "a power greater than yourself" to make the program work. The characters are hilariously funny and poignant, witty and emotionally wretching at the same time. The plot draws you into their lives so that you root for the ones who make it and cry for the ones who do not. Longyear stresses addiction as a disease, not an easy or popular concept for "normal" people, but a true one nevertheless. This is as real and honest a book about addiction as they come, and I love it. Barry Longyear is a superb science fiction writer (see The God Box and Sea of Glass as examples) but here he shines as his own biographer. Humor and pathos were never so expertly combined.

Powerful and painful page-turner

This book is both powerful and painful to read--but I couldn't stop. This is for anyone who wants insight into the human condition--especially the condition known as addiction. Barry Longyear is perhaps the most under-appreciated writer in SF, maybe because all his works are about people. In this one, there is no science fiction, just people. You don't have to be an addict, in recovery, or any of those things to appreciate this (I'm not) --just being human is sufficient.

I'm not sure what prompted me to read this book. Take a look at that cover art, not very inspirational. But it is written by Longyear and his work is usually good. It's not that this book is full of adventure or has a rich plot line. It doesn't even have exotic locations or lots of sex. What it does have, in truck loads, is empathy for the human condition. The main character is Jacob Randecker. He is a thinly veiled version of the author himself. They say that autobiographies are usually crap but then they also say write what you know. Whatever the case this book is undeniably excellent.

Jacob is an addict. He is addicted to alcohol and prescription medications. But then that's the most common kind. He doesn't think that he needs help but his wife and his friends, (the ones he has left), are adamant that he does. They use all of the pressure that they can, to get him to go to a rehab center called Saint Mary's. This is an actual hospital in the U.S.

The novel takes us through the program with Jacob and his group. We come to love Jake and each of his group. We also fall for the members of the hospital staff that we meet. It is that sort of book. I hope writing this book was cathartic for Longyear because reading it sure was for me.

I want to leave you with a small section from the dust jacket that I think may have helped my decision to read this book:
- One third will make it the first time around.
- One third will have to try again.
- One third are already dead. It just takes them a while to lie down.

One author's journey from denial to health.

This is Barry B.'s journey through drug and alcohol detox, thinly disguised as fiction. For anyone who has ever wondered about this process, the personal stories, justifications, and revelations may be more than you bargained for; for those of us who have had some experience with rehab it will probably cause painful memories to resurface. Longyear is a dab hand at breathing life into characters and making situations ring true. You will want to stay with this book to find out who survives, who "re-tread", and who just can't make it without their addictions. It's worth trying to find!
