Mr.Knox presents the historical and factual background as to when/why/how Poland successfully entered into the period movements of the West. Usually unknown or ignored by scholars, the wealth of Poland is shown in its architectural expression over the years. Pictures, diagrams and blueprints highlight the author's presentation; and reference to the Polish Nation's historical tragedies exhibit the will of a people to build, create and express themselves in the face of adversity. The author divides the present country into geographic areas in order to orderly present his material. Over 200 pictures are utilized. The only drawback is the failure of a greater recognition to thousands of architectural monuments on the lands of Pre-War Poland - now within the countries of the former USSR.

The Augusta comic strip in the Evening Standard was originally called Clive when it started back in the late 60's. Clive was Augusta's elder brother of A-level age, and Augusta would be, I guess, 4 (not yet at school). I followed the series faithfully until I left London in 1975 and I don't know how long it continued but it has been a real treat to find these back numbers and I would like to collect all of them. The wit is very smarty-smarty, rather twee and more than a little camp, but it's very funny and, better still, very good-humoured. This collection does not have some of my favourites that I remember best like Aunt Philodendron or the prolific painter of fine Mona Lisas Mrs Thelma M Basin, so that is a treat still in store when I can get hold of the rest of the series. For devotees, obviously, but if you missed the series entirely you might enjoy it.

This was among the best of the TIME-LIFE series on World War II aimed at a general readership. The book presents the Battle of the Atlantic in readable detail, with a nice mix of photo's and diagrams. Readers see how Germany's early attempts to close off the British sea lanes were helped by the addition of Atlantic bases after the Fall of France in June of 1940. We see how U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt gave assistance to the British, and how after the U.S. entered the war in Dec. 1941 German successes increased. Those successes were brought home to Americans along the east coast who looked seaward and saw burning U.S. ships that had been torpedoed. We also see how the German successes of 1942 were reversed for good a year later by a combination of improved Allied convoy tactics, growing air and naval power, and scientific advances - leading the German command to wrongly suspect they were betrayed by spies. The authors present convoys, destroyers, air tactics, depth charges, sea lanes, bases, etc., in a book that should please even many military history buffs. Readers might also enjoy many similar TIME-LIFE efforts on other theatres of the war.

The correspondence between Gibran and Haskell was so well documented that you feel a part of their unique relationship. They exchange so many huge ideas and beautiful thoughts. I found myself taking notes when I'd come across these clear, heart-jolting ideas. I felt at times like I was eating my favorite food or drinking my favorite drink. Enriching reading although Gibran's personal beliefs wander farther and farther from my own as his life progresses.

A One-of-a-kind Reference!

This is the first and only book I've ever seen that covers the development of Big Band Jazz, including the multitude of early Territory Bands. McCarthy's efforts to chronicle the regional orchestras that roamed the U.S. during the 20's, 3o's and 40's is monumental in scope. The author's writing style is a good deal more dry than Big Band guru George T. Simon, but that does not diminish the value of this book to somebody who really wants to understand the Big Band Era from its grass roots. When I listen to recordings from various Territory Bands I am constantly pulling my well-worn copy of McCarthy's masterpiece off my shelf. It is a great contextual tool for the serious Big Band fan. Hopefully, some publisher will decide to re-print it. My copy is almost worn out.

This is my favorite general rug book

1971 English edition of the German classic. Hubel is a valuable resource. This is a great classic. A comprehensive general guide to Oriental rugs. This is my favorite general rug book and the one I use first when I am trying to attribute a rug. The only thing I am not crazy about with this book is that knot counts are in Square Decimeters. Use a factor of 16 for approximate knots per square inch. 100 Knots per square inch is about 1600 knots per square decimeter. 3200 knots per square decimeter is about 200 knots per square inch. Hubel gives very good structural descriptions on about 300 rugs and carpet. If you own 5 books on rugs and this should be one of them.

This is an excellent referance book for trivia buffs, and people interested in music of the past, each song has the Artist, songwriter, when it was recorded, how long the song was in the charts ect ect
It helps solve those silly arguments and bets we sometimes get involved in,
