· articles on all but the smallest countries of the world, including former communist states that have gained their independence since 1989;
· the latest, best statistical information, compiled by David B. Barrett, on the religious affiliation and ecclesiastical breakdown of each country and continent;
· the addition of over seventy biographical articles on prominent figures throughout church history; and
· many expanded or entirely new articles that address topics of particular interest to English-speaking readers. Unparalleled in scholarship and breadth of content, the Encyclopedia of Christianity will long serve as the standard reference work for the study of Christianity in the past and the present-and its trajectory into the twenty-first century.

A True American HeroReview Date: 2004-09-23
His son is to be profusely thanked for releasing this correspondence of a man - yes, a Leftist, but whose Jewish background, perhaps even more so than his CP affiliation, made this man - a decision to fight evil and oppression and believe in the unity of all mankind. Cane writes movingly of the D-Day Battle, of coming across emanciated Jewish concentration camp survivors in Germany, of his pride in America, of being a Jew, and yes, of being a Communist and pride in the Soviet Union as the ally that it was (of course then being unaware of what a murderous fascist Joe Stalin really was). He writes of the common soldiers that he served alongside with, and there is correspondence from some of them that attest to Cane's own bravery in battle. And he writes of his love of his family and of the baby son who now has been able to bring this unique correspondence to publication.
Larry Cane earned the Silver Star and a Battlefield Commission to the rank of Captain in the United States Army for his heroism on the battlefields of France after D-Day, and for his role in helping to smash the Hitlerian evil. A worthy read for all Americans interested in our "Greatest Generation" - and in the unique experiences of those who bravely chose to fight Hitlerism in Spain before the world recognized what was at stake for all mankind.

Susan flies to the Caribbean island of St. Stephens. However, Susan's idyll vacation goes astray when she becomes lost while parasailing. However, worse yet is that she crash lands near where the local drug lord, Crimson, is taking care of business. Feeling that she is a witness to a murder, he plans to kill her, but she is rescued before he can carry out the deed. Susan leaves paradise for the safe environs of Manhattan, not knowing that Crimson plans to follow her in order to silence the only person he believes who can destroy his empire.
GIVEN THE EVIDENCE, with the second appearance of Susan Given, is an exciting tale that blends elements from the legal procedural with that of a thriller. The story line is fast-paced on both islands and the support cast has fully developed characters. However, Susan is the show as her fears and motivations propel the novel forward in a jocular but dire manner. Margaret Barrett and Charles Dennis have the beginnings of what is hopefully a long running series.

Stories of the Bravest of the Brave!Review Date: 2008-05-01
The Medal of Honor story is fascinating not only for heroic deeds but also the somewhat tortured development of the Medal itself. The Medal of Honor dates from Civil War times. In separate chapters Tillman relates representative MoH actions from the Civil War, the Indian campaigns, the Spanish-American War and other 'wars of expansion,' World War I, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and recent conflicts in Somalia and Afghanistan. Over 2,300 men received the MoH; Tillman chronicles 100 of that total. He deliberately focuses on lesser-known recipients while briefly touching on Alvin York, Audie Murphy, etc.
Yet the backstory of the Medal is just as fascinating. Over the years the criteria for being awarded the Medal has evolved. Some early awards, such as those given to an entire Union Army regiment for extending their enlistment, were patently undeserved. Others, such as that given to Douglas MacArthur, were political in nature. Still others, such as those awarded to Teddy Roosevelt in 1898 and, 45 years later, to his son for his actions on D-Day, are questionable. Their actions objectively don't fulfill the 'Above and Beyond' criteria of the Medal. Rather both men's actions reflect Commanding Officers doing what they are paid to do.
Tillman does a marvelous job of weaving the combat narratives and beyond-the-scenes machinations into a smooth-flowing narrative. Reading HEROES leaves one with feelings of amazement, sometimes sadness and pride. HEROES is a must-read for all Americans.

The Reality of War.Review Date: 2006-10-17
This is war.
Not like you have seen on television, or any movie (not even Platoon). To read page after page of one paragraph descriptions of mortal combat is a very chilling experience. Mens lives reduced to a few words by the sheer number of MOH recipients. A common theme is revealed. Men fight for their fellow men. And they surrender their lives for them. The author documents that depending on war and theater, between 1/2 and 2/3 of recipeints who recieved the MOH did so postumously.
In Tillman's book, the MOH recipients are divided by theater of operation and war. Yet they are remarkably similar men.
The hand grenade plays an important part in this story. Many men were so close to the enemy that they exchanged not gun shots but grenades. A chilling book that will bring the reality of close quarters combat into your living room.
