"Beady Bear" was one of my favorite books when I was a little girl. Now that I am an auntie I have re-discovered it and purchased copies as gifts for my nephews and the children of my friends. I need Beady! Corduroy, too. This is a charming book, and with its easy-to-memorize verse employing "small" words it is great for beginning (or aspiring!) readers.

A terrific rhyming book for pre-schoolers

A Pointer to Christ
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-30
Christ is the heart of the Christian faith. He is also the centerpiece of both the Old and New Testament Scriptures. Yet many believers neglect the Old Testament limiting their study of the Scriptures to the New Testament. Dr. Michael Barrett masterfully removes all the typical excuses for neglecting the pursuit of the knowledge of Christ in the Old Testament. He shows where and how to look for Christ. This book is a must for those who pursue the knowlege of Christ but have neglected the pursuit of that knowledge in the Old Testament.

Please, suggest to your church leadership that your church use this book as a textbook for an adult Sunday school elective on studying the Old Testament. It would be a wonderful elective because this is a wonderful book!

Appropriately titled, Beginning at Moses: A Guide to Finding Christ in the Old Testament gives opportunity for students, pastors and laymen to develop the proper tools necessary for finding Christ in the Old Testament. Barrett indeed guides the reader through the maze of Hebrew, Greek, and theological terminology with such simplicity and clarity that most anyone with some exposure to the Old Testament may follow with ease. The constant encouragement and brief pause to define terms makes this a priceless resource to any student of the Scripture. The author's love for the Old Testament is infectious. He warns, however, that without Christ it is impossible to comprehend truly the Old Testament; so he propounds: "Seeing Christ is the key to unlocking the message of Scripture," and in this book, specifically the Old Testament (14).
The first part of the book is concerned with identifying "who we are looking for." Christ or messiah is the term for an anointed one. Anyone anointed. The individual is chosen, accredited, and empowered. This understanding allows the reader to identify not only certain individuals with these particular qualifications within the Old Testament (e.g. Jeremiah, Jer. 1; Aaron, Ps. 106:16, and Zechariah, 2 Chron. 24:20), but also Jesus the Messiah. Furthermore, the three distinct duties of the messianic office (Prophet, Priest and King) are demonstrated to be fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah.
Best seen where Barrett's clarity cuts through the complex is chapter two: the Person of Christ. He makes five statements, based on the Westminster Confession of Faith (also sprinkled throughout the book), that explain the hypostatic union. Of course he quickly defines this term: "Hypostasis is just a Greek word meaning essence or substance that has been used to describe this otherwise inexplicable union of a perfect human nature with the eternal divine nature in the Second Person of the Trinity." Referring to Christ's divine nature, Barrett explores His perfections of Deity, works of Deity, and the worship ascribed to Him. And the section on Christ's humanity addresses head-on the relationship of Christ to sin.
The balance of Part One is an explanation of Christ's work. It is expedient that the reader understand the works of Jesus Christ as one would study art, so that the beholder may correctly identify His person (79). First, discussion is given to Christ's first advent. His thoughts on 2 Corinthians 5:21 are "By God's legal transaction, the life that Christ earned becomes ours and the death that we earned became His" (88). Further down the page, he argues for the eternally sure purpose of Christ's work, which defies the postponement theory. Second, His prophetic and kingly administration and priestly intercession demonstrate His present work. Last, Christ is described as Judge and Ruler in His Second Advent.
At this point you are 100 pages into the book. In the next 200 pages Barrett masterfully guides the reader "where to look" in the Scripture to find Christ. Chapters 4-10 deal with Christ in the covenants, in persons, in His names, in word prophecy, in picture prophecy, and in song.
Barrett gives a colorful synopsis of the covenant development from Adam to David (120-21). He spends considerable time with the first, particularly with reference to Gen. 3:15. Barrett believes that the phrase "bruise thy head" describes the crucifixion, while "bruise thy heel" "suggests the ineffectiveness of the serpent to frustrate or alter the mission of Christ" (127). Also he translates Genesis 4:1 "I have acquired a man, even Jehovah" (128). This indicates that Eve anticipated her first child to be the direct fulfillment of Genesis 3:15.
Christ in person steers the reader through a discussion about Christophanies. In Micah 5:2-3a, Barrett sees an indirect reference to eternal generation of the Son and a direct reference to the pre-incarnate appearances of Christ. The appearances of Christ as the Angel of the LORD (taken appositionally) are a foretaste of Christ's prophetic, priestly and kingly mission. A chart including 24 passages revealing Christophanies allows the reader to get a jump start in his personal study.
Barrett gives the most pages in this second half of the book to Christ in His names (42 pages). He organizes the names in relationship to Christ's person and work. Although the list is not exhaustive, he chooses some names which may not be as familiar: Nail, Battle Bow, Thou God seest me, and Shiloh.
Christ in prophecy is broken up into chapters discussing verbal prophecy and typology from a premillennial standpoint (213). Barrett notes that verbal prophecy indicates that God is in control, inspires, confidence, and increases expectant hope. Using three "C's" as guidelines (messianic clues, Scriptural confirmation, and context), the reader explores Old Testament prophecies from the virgin birth to the resurrection. In the chapter on picture prophecy, the reader is walked through the gallery of various passages. The final chapter of part two identifies Christ in Song or Psalm, which points to His person and work. A helpful chart lists the Messianic Psalms, New Testament confirmation, and topics addressed in the Psalm.
Barrett's over twenty-five years of classroom experience radiates in his ability to draw attention with introductory humor and personal illustration as well as spread passion to the reader for his topic. One unfortunate aspect of the book is that there is no Scriptural index. Because of the gold-mine of exegesis on major passages, I seriously thought about making one myself. The conclusion and summary, which encapsulates the entire book in six pages, is written to the curious fellow that reads conclusions first (the author admits this tendency himself).
Overall the book is truly a masterful work that is Christ-honoring. Upon reading this book, not only will your appetite be whetted and ready for another reading of the Old Testament, but also your senses will be sharpened to see Christ! No doubt this is a must for every serious Bible reader.

I had the privilege of sitting under the instruction of Dr. Barrett in seminary. His courses were always inspiring and life-changing.

I remember in one class a student asked Dr. Barrett why he always found Christ when studying the Old Testament. Dr. Barrett replied that when reading the Bible you find what you are looking for. I have had few statements in my life that have stayed with me through the years as that statement has stayed with me. If you are looking for information about the Bible, that is what you will find. If you are looking for daily inspiritation, that is what you will find. However, that is not why God gave us His written Word. God gave us the Bible that we might know Christ. No book, other than God's inspired Word, can teach us of Christ: His Person and His Work.

This book is for any Christian who is serious about their Old Testament study. This book is a manual for unlocking the depths of the Old Testament and its riches in Christ. Furthermore, Dr. Barrett's style is very readable and not overly technical--it is written for the student and the scholar.

I am currently using this book as the textbook for a Sunday School class in our church. I want my students to learn what I have learned, and continue to learn: that the Old Testament is full of Christ, His person, and His work. No other message is as needed for mankind.

I highly recommend this book to any and all.

Benjamin discovers joy in ordinary things

Benjamin, a boy-like dog, celebrates his ninth birthday with a party for his friends. He receives many presents and loves tearing the wrappings from the packages and discovering the wonderful gifts inside. Once the party is over, Benjamin remembers how happy he felt opening the presents, and feels sad because he won't experience this joy again for another year. He therefore decides to rewrap one of his presents each evening and open it the next morning. When he runs out of presents, he decides to wrap other items in his home, and this is where the book gets really interesting. The narrative vanishes, and the reader, through a series of detailed illustrations, sees how Benjamin's appreciation of ordinary household items is renewed when he is deprived of their use during the short time they are wrapped. For example, he can't cook when his stove is wrapped, reads by candle light when the lamp is wrapped, and sits on the floor when his favorite armchair is wrapped. Then the reader sees Benjamin's joy as each item is unwrapped. This activity continues until the following year, when Benjamin's friends arrive for his tenth birthday party and discover that he has wrapped his entire home! The story ends with Benjamin feeling that he will never want another birthday present again, because everything around him is a gift and will always be. With a positive message and detailed illustrations, this book is real gem.

This book is special to me because my son's name in Benjamin. But that isn't what makes it a well written book. I like the imagination and problem solving Benjamin has. He knows how to fix a problem and does it in creative ways. The best part, however, is at the end. The ending leads us to a life lesson - that we should appreciaite everything and everyone around us and to let them know it.

Despite the bias that might come with having Judi Barrett as a childhood art teacher, I can say honestly, that this is my favorite book. Even as an adult, I often refer this book to all my friends. The simplicity of how to regain that feeling of anticipation, surprise, happiness and every joyous feeling associated with birthdays, is refreshing to the adult mind. This book gave me the innitiative to leave money in my pockets, and hide letters in old books, for it rediscovers the idea of rediscovery.

A really fine fairytale set in Hong Kong in which children of the land learn to accept children who are different from them. This is a very readable tale for children, probably from 7 to 12, depending on which country, etc., and the moral is excellent. The author's details on the boat people "fisherfolk" are often excellent and really bring the story to life. Both the writing and the theme are excellent.

The Body's Map of Consciousness, Book I is the story of Integrated Awareness, a healing modality that is based on discovering for oneself that we can take responsiblity for our own health. The book guides one through certain movements that helped me discover feelings, beliefs and attitudes I was not conscous of holding. I have re-experienced body memories of my childhood that helped me remember what I really felt as a kid about my family, about the death of my grandmother and about the decisons I made as a kid. This helped me reassess beliefs I had about my childhood. Maybe my childhood wasn't as bad as I thought it was! Anyway, I really liked the book and I hope you will too. - Mary Caldwell

Every day, or so it seems, another 20 or so "Self-Help" books hit the shelves, reminding us that we are quite a bit less perfect than we would like to be, or at least think we should be. What fuels this river of words, pictures and techniques for making us more acceptable is nothing less than that voice from somewhere inside us telling us we're still not 'good enough', 'smart enough', 'thin enough', 'rich enough' or 'loved enough'. We have no clear notion of whose voice this is, how it came to occupy a place of such prominence within us, why it is so easy to hear and hard to ignore, and worst of all, what might actually constitute "enough" of anything.

The simple truth, according to one of the author's insightful models, is that:

"In relation to emotional history, the mind predicts and projects that if you behave a certain way...people are going to respond to you in a predicted manner...If you violate a "known" rule, behave non-habitually, allow yourself to be seen or your feelings to be known, a previously felt "negative" will be repeated." (p. 71 The Body's Map of Consciousness.)

We all know the variety of ways our own caregivers defined and expressed their "negative" messages to us, and learned that the easier way to not have to feel them again was to anticipate their judgments and apply them inwardly, before they did.

Our perception of judgments from without, coupled with the emotional pain we self-inflict when distancing ourselves from the nurturing we so desperately needed from our caregivers, translates unintentionally ands reflexively to physical patterns of defensive posturing. These postures (like cringing, ducking or hunching the shoulders) can quickly become habitual and unconscious defenses that insure that we don't allocate more energy or attention to potential hurts than is absolutely necessary. Consciousness IS an efficient, if occasionally short-sighted ally.

Integrated Awareness® is a gentle, non-invasive method for helping us to become more neutral and objective observers of our own non-conscious, defensive habits so that we may opt to drop some of them, or at least make adjustments to them that more appropriately reflect current, adult circumstances. "The Body's Map of Consciousness, Vol. 1" distinguishes itself from most other mind/body/emotion self-help books by clearly and coherently describing both how the various interwoven Physical, Mental, Emotional and Energetic systems constituting Consciousness interface and influence each other, and how we can help 'ourselves' by making better choices about how those systems might work more effectively for us in the days ahead.

The authors have taken great care to make the information in this book easily approachable to a wide audience. The movement sequences are extremely user-friendly and clear and all requirements for practicing some disciplined set of exercises "correctly" (like yoga or tai-chi for example) in order to succeed are thankfully absent here. This is an exceptional introduction to 'mapping' Consciousness, compassionately prepared and coherently presented, in a tone that encourages us to see ourselves more positively and to "be" who we are, instead of that person we thought we were "supposed" to be. This is a large order for a small (100 pp.) book, but it more than accomplishes its mission and whets our appetities for the next two projected volumes.

Richard Barrett again does an outstanding job of clearly stating his main points, then building on them with facts and good examples. He is able to expertly blend some of the key principles of other authors -- Ken Wilbur and Don Beck -- with some of his material. The text provides some excellent evaluation tools, both for individuals and organizations. He references a number of websites for additional clarity of some of his points. He has an excellent reference list at the end of the book. Anyone who is looking at leadership and organizational values/vision/mission will do well to read this timely book.

Richard does another excellent job describing the seven levels of consciousness model and how this framework can be used to effectively measure an organization's culture. This process provides a values-based approach within a whole system perspective. Regardless of the status of an organziation's cultural health, this whole system approach provides the opportunity to integrate where an organization is (its current strengths, opportunities, systems and resources) and provides a map to get to where the organization wants to be. A great book that helps make sense of the complexity of organizational culture and how to improve it. Nice work!

Many of us read Richard Barrett's best-selling book, Liberating the Corporate Soul, and admired his visionary and soul nurturing approaches to building sustainable and enduring organisations. Now he has given birth to another major leap forward in how to develop and sustain values-based organisations. In this new book, Richard demonstrates again his genius at delivering clear conceptual and experience-based thinking on organisation culture as a new frontier of competitive advantage. Building on his experience in carrying out over 600 cultural values assessments in 35 countries, he shows how to build full-spectrum consciousness in leaders and organizations and how to carry out whole-system change to meet the challenges of accelerating change, deepening complexity and growing systemic risks.

M Simandle teaches you really how to capture light and how important it is to use, as she calls it, "broken color" - many, many fragments of bright pigment, sparkling and contrasting with the white of the paper. A book that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

The 2006 D.B. Hardeman Prize for the best book on Congress published in
2005 has been awarded to "The CIA and Congress". Don Bacon, a member of
the award committee, says: "David Barrett has given us an engrossing
account of the highly secret, often contentious relationship between
Congress and its post-World War II creation, the Central Intelligence
Agency. Thoroughly researched, rich in fascinating detail, 'The CIA and
Congress' focuses on the spy agency's early years, when the Cold War was
at its peak. The author relies heavily on previously hidden official
records and his own insightful interviews to show that our lawmakers
worried more about the new agency's potential for mischief and kept it
on a shorter leash than has been previously known."

This book is a necessary read if you are into the history and political analysis of the American government from the 1940s through the 60s. It's a fascinating read. Dr. Barrett has gone to incredible lengths of archival research to write a book that is a truly original voice on the period. As someone who came across the book looking for material on Joe McCarthy, I was amazed at how enjoyable the book was to read just in general. Dr. Barrett has found material to support stories that were merely rumors before. For example, letters from a military officer who was "propositioned" by Senator McCarthy and memos supporting the fact that meetings occurred between the CIA Director and a Congressional subcommittee prior to the Bay of Pigs invasion. This is truly a groundbreaking book that should be required reading for anyone interested in the CIA or Congress.

Barrett's /The CIA and Congress/ is a triumph of research. Writing any history of the CIA is problematic because the documentation will never be close to complete; some official and private papers have been destroyed or "misplaced," others remain classified 50 years or more after being written, and many important discussions and decisions were never committed to paper. Faced with such endemic incompleteness, Barrett, a political scientist at Villanova University, persevered, found widely dispersed research materials and displayed sound analytic sense and balance in their use. Having done so much fine detective work, Barrett can present not only a gripping review of leadership dynamics among the CIA, the White House and Congress but also a coherent view of the development and oversight of the CIA's budgets (a notoriously hard target) from 1947 to 1961. His research is made more impressive by his frankness in admitting on several occasions that he cannot tell the whole story because the documents are not available.

Barrett's analysis of the relationship between the long-established Congress and the infant CIA (founded only in 1947) turns not only on documents but also on his superb portraits and assessments of the key players: The thoughts, actions and characters of senators, congressmen, presidents and CIA officials are front and center in the book. The human pageant Barrett presents is not all that different from that which exists today.

...I bought it a few years ago when I found out that I had high cholesterol and needed to change my eating habits. Being rather passionate about my Italian cooking, I was determined to eat traditional Italian meals. This book allowed me to do that. The recipes are *very* simple and delectable. For example, the white onions in balsamic vinegar takes nearly 0 preparation time but the taste is just incredible. The more rigorous recipes such as veggie broth and the *reason* to make it - risotto, will take some time to prepare, but the steps are clearly laid out, and open to a little interpretation so you can make some of your own choices. Every time I make the wild mushroom risotto (actually, many mushroom risotto) my guests fall in love with it and come back for more. It contains very descriptive methods and the reasoning behind some of the choices of ingredients as well as some anecdotal information on how she discovered some of the recipes. I have truly enjoyed this book, and now I'm worried about what I'm going to do when the book wears out!

This book reveals the greatness of this plane that was developed before the war and the amazing feats that was accomplished with it and the men who flew them.Often used successfully as a fighter against the Japanese Air Force. This plane built by Douglas Aviation Co along with the Grumman F4F Wild cat kept us in the battle the 1st year of the war until more modern planes were produced, Having flown many hours of patroling as a crew member in this plane I can vouch for it's authenticity. An excellent and well written book.

This book does not attempt to astound the reader with lots of hyperbole. Instead it takes a simple, down to earth approach to to the history of an airplane, and it's pilots who did astounding things. The book is not dry, nor is it filled with exaggeration: it is not too hot, or too cold. "The Dauntless Dive Bomber of World War II" is just right.

This book is THE be all/end all source for the Dauntless. Mr. Tillman has once again put together an outstanding historical tribute to this fascinating war machine and the crews that operated her. I cannot express enough how important this book is on a very important player in the history of aviation and one's bravery.
