I have just started reading "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", but the more I read the more I want to read. When finished it will be taken to the next reunion of the USS SOLEY (DD707) for use as a raffle item for another Tin Can Sailor to enjoy.

The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors chronicles "The Battle off Samar", possibly the most lopsided battle ever fought by the US Navy. Due to an inexplicable decision by the legendary Admiral Halsey, on October 25, 1944 a small flotilla of Escort Carriers and their escorting squadron of "Tin Cans" (Destroyers, and their little cousins, Destroyer Escorts, the smallest ships in the blue water fleet) were the only thing standing between a powerful fleet of Japanese battleships and the US invasion force sent to liberate the Philippines.

For the Americans, trying to stand up against the heavily armed and armored Japanese behemoths with the minimal forces at their disposal was suicidal. Still they were the only ships available to prevent the Japanese steaming into Leyte Gulf and slaughtering the soldiers and Marines still on the beach, so stand up against them is what they did. Incredibly, the Japanese retreated...but only after blasting two Destroyers a Destroyer Escort and one of the Escort Carriers into oblivion.

It was once said (by William Manchester, I believe) that military history often focuses on battles because, once so much blood has been shed we humans seem compelled to justify all the loss and pain by giving the event meaning. By the time the Battle off Samar took place, the Japanese empire was certainly beaten. Win, lose or draw, on that day in October they were not going to significantly alter the course of the war. And yet the willingness of the outnumbered and out gunned American squadron to stand and fight when they should have had no chance of winning does elevate 3 hours of explosive action to that point where stories and poems will be written about it for decades.

James D. Hornfischer's book captures both the events and emotions of the men who made what they knew would be a suicidal last stand vividly. It is well worth reading for anyone interested in World War II history.

This is an incredible story of true courage by the men of the U.S. Navy fighting in the Pacific during World War II. Words are not equal to the valor shown by the Tin Can Sailors who battled the best ships of the Japanese Navy and turned certain destruction into an unbelieveable victory. I dread to think that our nation may one day forget the courage and sacrifice of these men. The Tin Can Sailors are a shining examples of this nation's best. Highly recommend this book.

As a former Tin Can sailor it brought back a lot of good memories. I was lucky enough to come along after the second World War but as a sailor serving on Destroyers I new I was a member of a very exclusive club. Mr Hornfischer tells this story in such away that you just don't want to put the book down. We have had influx of books written on the "Greatest Generation" and this is a story that belongs with what has been written and what will be written about them.

A couple of years ago, I read "Shattered Sword" (about the Battle of Midway) and proclaimed it the best WWII account of Pacific Theatre Naval history to date. I now have to say THE LAST STAND OF THE TIN CAN SAILORS by James Hornfischer ranks right beside it.

This is a brilliantly presented accounting of Halsey's folly when he let his enormous ego get in the way of following orders. The result is the death of some of the Navy's finest tin can sailors and the birth of legends in Naval history. Had Halsey been in position with the 3rd Fleet to guard San Bernardino Straits, it is quite possible that even more American lives would have been lost in the ensuing battle, but it is also quite probably that the Japanese Center Force would have also been dismantled piecemeal just as the Japanese Southern Force had been destroyed the day before.

But, as history has shown, Halsey couldn't contain his ego and went chasing after his own legacy, leaving the Straits to be guarded by the "little guys" a tiny group of escort carriers and accompanying destroyers and destroyer escorts. Hornfischer deftly tells the tale of the men of these greatly overmatched tin cans who faced down the Imperial giants. Many of them eventually paid the ultimate sacrifice.

This incredibly well researched story will have you glued to every page. The details are accurate to a flaw and riveting like no other account I have ever read. This is superbly written and also includes several pages of photos as well as maps of ship positioning during the battle. This is one of the best Naval warfare history books you will ever read.

The third book in a series of stories involving Duluth police and politicians. The book delivers rapid-fire action from beginning to end. The plotline is a series of different stories or subplots that the author intricately melds together. I especially found it interesting how the author works current events into the book which makes it near impossible to put down. I almost thought I had the ending figured out too...happy to read that I didn't.

Brian Freeman's 3rd outing after last year's Stripped, take Stride and Serena Dial, his paramour from Las Vegas, back to Duluth. Though conflicts of interest prevent Stride from directly investigating the murder of his former partner, he nevertheless becomes involved. Meanwhile, Serena, adjusting to life in the frozen north, has put up her shingle as a PI and is hired to act as an intermediary for a blackmail drop for a prominent local lawyer. What starts as two disparate cases converges into one before diverging into three (or at least it appears to be three).

I enjoyed the interaction and subtlies of the characters, who are well-drawn and interesting, especially the pseudo love-triangle between Stride, Serena and Maggie. This is a well-crafted thriller/mystery with nice twists and surprises. I deducted one star because Freeman tried too hard to make the apparent 3 cases connect. Some of it, especially the "2nd" climax, appears confusing and hard to follow but nonetheless still satisfying and rewarding. Freeman will need to work hard to top this one.

This was my first brian freeman book ,no way will it be the last. It was a very good book filled with many twists and turns. I emailed the author to tell him I loved the book and got a very quick response. He seems very nice and said his new book will be out next feb. Look for it it's called "In the dark"

This is my first and certainly not my last Brian Freeman book. What a great book with many plot twists. I truly enjoyed this book. I am now going to purchase his first two books and be always on the lookout for more books by Brian Freeman. If you like to read Patterson, Cromwell or Hoag you will enjoy this book also.

I agree with the many positive reviews that I read prior to ordering this book: it's amazing. Jamie does a wonderful job of clearly covering the often confusing and intricate details of the art of Feng Shui. I'm only an interested amateur but of the many schools of Feng Shui our there, the one she describes seems to make to most sense to me.

If you are interested in investigating some of the fascinating concepts and principles of Feng Shui but are suspicious of some of the orthodox versions of this ancient Chinese art of "placement" (e.g. strictly following the "Compass" schools), this is an invaluable resource.

"Feng Shui Your Life" is so deeply layered with information that I anticipate being able to use this book for many, many years as I gradually explore this fascinating way of seeing our world and living more fully and successfully in it.

This is a great book not just for Feng Shui principles, but also for decorating.

I love this book.
It takes a complicated and misunderstood topic and makes it clear.

I bought this book for fun. I just bought a new house and wanted to see how I could add a couple simple Feng Shui techniques to enhance it. The book is easy to read and understand. The author provides MANY PRACTICAL tips and ideas on how to enhance certain areas to enhance the energy there or to attract more positive energies. (Because, let's face it: At least in the eyes of a novice, Feng Shui is not always extremely practical.) Anyone looking for something insightful or looking to positively alter your life and surounding energies should take a peek at this book!

This book was so amazing; I loved it! Easy, applicable, and helpful. It was my first time Feng Shui experience, and I feel like it was an excellent introduction.

A good mixture of the practical and the inspirational. Excellent exercises for you to do on your own.

The subtitle says that this is a Guide for Busy Women--true enough, but it works for men too, and
just as well.

Highly recommended.

I could very easily dub this book, the best, however that is to be determined in the eye of the beholder. I can say with much conviction, that it is the book I turn to the most often for advice, straight forward answers and direction as well as a nice glimpse at a reality check.

Any writer will tell you that you don't write a best seller overnight, and this book will tell you that too. Unlike many other writing books available the pages don't contain advice at how to leave your 9 to 5 job and write the world's best novel. Instead the book is filled with useful, real advice for determined writer's to utilize and honestly get their pens on fire.

There are dozens of exercises to get you thinking and writing, with originality and flair. The book is well written and is a very easy book to devour in a short period of time. Except that you will more than likely find yourself reaching for it again and again to participate in the exercises and get you thinking on a more creative level.

A must have book for any would-be writer's bookshelf.

I had originally checked this out from my public library but found the information so useful that I bought a copy for my own personal library. Very good and practical information to inspire and motivate you to write!

I bought this book when it came out, read it, marked the heck out of it, and used its ideas a few times.

Always have, I guess, ever since I was in Elementary School ( early 70's ), then Junior High and High School ( mid/late 70's ), writng book reports, and then letters to the editor of the local paper.

For various reasons none of that ever translated into a career path.

I read somewhere that we are always afraid to start something that we want to make very good, true, and serious.

This book influenced the last 3 years of my blogging, on 2 blogs, and will help anyone who reads it.

This book will help you find the writer within, and find the time to write more as well.

This book offers run-of-the-mill exercises that fail to inspire one to write. If you struggle with the act of sitting down and putting pen to paper, this book will not change that. I would love to see a book out there that offers innovative exercises that not only inspire one to write, but also improves writing along the way. If anyone can recommend such a book, please message me.

As this book states, it is the sayings of Jesus FROM the Diary of St. Faustina - but it is NOT the diary.

The diary itself is the story, as a diary would be, of St. Faustina's life and her interactions with Jesus and His messages throughout her life.

The sayings alone, without knowing the content of what was happening at the time of each saying, can easily make it seem like something totally different then when you combine the whole picture of what had and was happening when Jesus spoke each quote to Faustina.
(it is the same as only getting one side of the conversation, very disjointed and out of contest).

That said, if one knows the whole story and has read Faustina's diary, then this is a nice book just to be able to have the actual sayings of Jesus to St. Faustina in one compact and easily to review book.

The many excellent reviews that have been written about St. Faustina's Diary are correct! I have been reading this for Lent and it is a fascinating book that can be read over and over much like the Bible. Someone once told me this book is really deep; please don't think this book is too deep for you, it's not.

Page after page reaffirms God's great mercy. Reading the words that Jesus actually spoke to St. Faustina is so moving. You will want to meditate upon them. I find it is a great book to take with me to Eucharistic Adoration.

So, if you only have a couple of Catholic books in your home, this should be one of them.

This is a must read for everyone. It assures us of the Divine Mercy of Jesus, especially good if you are going through a difficult time in your life.

I found this book to be a wonderful aid to my spiritual life. At one point in the book Jesus tells Sister Faustina to write in her diary because it will be helpful to souls who would read it later.
I am one of those souls. At times I felt as if Christ was speaking to me through her. This book helped me so much to understand more fully how vast is the love of God. So vast that none of us will ever be able to understand it. Much larger than the worst sins that any of us can ever commit.
This book made me more aware of my own sin on another level than what I was previously aware of. This book has taught me new forms of prayer that have helped draw me closer to Christ.
This book has taught me more about how to love God. It has greatly enriched my interior life. My relationship with God has now moved up to a higher level.
It has also helped me to understand more about the living presence of God in the Eucharist.
I am not Catholic, I am an Episcopalian, (but I am rather Catholic at heart). And although I have always believed in the living presence of Christ in the bread and wine, it has now moved to a higher level of understanding and reverence. I anxiously look forward to every oportunity I have to join with the living Christ in the Eucharistic feast.
The book is a bit long and does repeat a bit, but it is beautiful and well worth the time to read.
My copy is underlined, and marked with sticky notes and folded over pages of places that I have returned to again and again to meditate on.
I have nothing but praise for this book and recommend it to everyone of any religion.

This book is a gem. It covers daily spiritual thoughts. You have something deep and worthwhile every day to read and reflect on, if you read just a little each day. Or you can read the whole book in one sitting, then re-read each day what moves you the most.

This is an awesome book. I laughed and cried. It's heartbreaking and uplifting. I highly reccommend this for all US citizens - whether you are associated with the military or not. It gives an understanding of what the military members and their families deal with, and who they are.

This book was very moving. I laughed and I cried. There were sad stories and poignant stories and many positive stories. I recommend this book to anyone wanting a real look at how the military and their families feel about going through these deployments. I also recomment it for families going through the deployments now. I have learned a lot about what my son may be going through and may not be willing to share with us right now.

This book really gives you a taste for how it is in Iraq...I think everyone should read it...especially Pres. Bush.

I am a military wife. My young daughter and I survived 12 months while my husband served in Iraq. This book was absolutely amazing. I cannot come up with the words to describe how much this book meant to me. I don't know about other spouses, but no matter how much my husband and I talk, it is not easy for him to communicate his thoughts or feelings on his service in Iraq. It was even difficult for him to describe his life over there when asked directly. I think a lot of it is him trying to protect me, but also, his brain does not work that way. He was there, he did what he had to do as a soldier, end of story. This book brought me insight into my husband. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me sick. It made me angry. It made me happy. It made me joyful. It made me all of these things at the same time. I am so thankful to the organization(whose name escapes me right now) that made this book possible. It is a book that touched my heart and soul. I will never be the same, and I am greatful for that. It is in know way a "light" read. I read it quickly, as I do everything, but because I was hungry to read more, to know more, to feel more. Do not read it without a box of tissues next to you.

I am a NCO in the army and have been to Iraq 4 times and this book sent chills through my bodie many times with the pure honest look at war. Most of the stories are reflections of events that any service member will identifie with. Then there are some events told in this book only a select few will truely grasp. This is a must read if you would like a insight into the mind of a Military member who has been deployed. I cant recomend this book more then just get it read it and prepair to get choked up. The identity of each of the family members is written so as to provide an asymmetrical perspective of their joy, hardships, and terror while on the journey. The back story of the family is woven into the narrative in a way that facilitates seamless transitions between the voyage and situations throughout their lives. The external threats--to include open sea thugs and uncharted reefs--create the conditions for an epic tale that ultimately leads to the renewal of a family's relationship with each other and with God. For anyone who loves a great adventure story that is well-told, this book is a must read.

An epic story of hopes, dreams, and the nightmare of survival when things go bad that cannot be forgotten. The device of seeing events through Jeanne then John's eyes forces you to realize athough it's a story of a family, each is an individual with their own vision. All of us dream (I suspect) of chucking all the things we feel we cannot exist without and that trap us in our formatted existences, but this family did it all, and like a phoenix burning in the flames rose and were reborn, stronger and with more behind them than they can imagine.
The description of this family's trials bring to mind the old commercials listing one by one the cost for specific items, then describing a certain unique experience as "priceless". Every moment described, the good, the bad, the losses, and the miracles of survival fit that category "priceless".
Cheers!! for the Silverwood family for taking the jump, surviving and for letting us live through their eyes the candid tale of their amazing real-life adventures. This book is a vividly described experience. It forces me to relook at what is possible to do with life, if you just decide to do it.
A Movie, I'll buy tickets now!

I found the writing vivid and at times poetic. The contrast of writing style and perspective between Jean and John contributes to the reader's imagery and understanding. I enjoyed reading about each new port and island along the way. The candid impressions and experiences of each family member to the different locales added to the richness of the story. Cudos to the family for surviving and staying together through it all. Great summer read!

This book was great from page one to the last final word.

I read it all in less than two days because I could not put it down. The perspective from the wife was absolutely a must read for any woman that is considering living on a boat or cruising the world with their mate and children. Hard to believe she is not an accomplished author of many books. The way she weaved the tragic end of the voyage in clear detail with the total two year journey throughout her part of the book was masterful. She was open and genuine in sharing her most personal thoughts.

As for the husband's part, I really enjoyed the history of a previous wreck that parralleled their's on the same reef 150 years ago. It gives the historical context that transfers a feeling of timelessness to the sea and sailing. The man has a heart as big as the Pacific. These six people are everyday heros to all who dream of adventure and being brave enough to save those they truly love.

In the end, the experience for them as a family was something that cannot be duplicated or would anyone want to go through that ordeal. Still, the joy of seeing the kids both live real life outside of our comfortble California life style and then raise to the occation when called upon was very inspiring. My two sons have it on their summer reading list next. Definitly 5 STARS!!!!!

As a San Diego native I knew the story and the fantastic ending and still could not stop reading. I too am the mother of four children and cannot imagine attempting such a trip. Jean's account of their extraordinary family and adventure was perfect. Not only do you become part of the Emerald Jean family through her great writing but you relate to their strengths, emotions and troubles as a family to your own life. I found myself living the story with my husband and children and wondering if we all could have been so strong and loving. John's storytelling is not only educational it's laced with some fun humor and emotion. Truly a must read not only for adults but for young adults who could learn a lot from these amazing children. Would love to hug Camille and have cookies and milk with her! The movie will be great!!!!!

I bought this book for my son, and he LOVES it. It has so much information and great pictures it keeps him busy for hours!

"National Geographic Dinosaurs" is aimed perfectly at the new student (aged 8-12). It's illustrations are vivid and the information is well-pitched.

At almost 200 pages in length, there are thicker books. However, with 120 pages dedicated to dinosaur profiles, there are enough dinosaurs to satisfy the new student.

Typically, there are a series of chapters that provide a context, followed by the dinosaur profiles. "Nat Geo Dinosaurs" contextual chapters include 'What is a Dinosaur?'; 'The Age of the Dinosaurs' - info on the Mesezoic era and other creatures - marine and flying; 'Dinosaur Sites'- key fossil sites; 'Discovering Dinosaurs'; 'Reconstructing Dinosaurs'; 'Dinosaur biology and behaviour'; 'How they Lived' - maternal instincts, hunting and fighting, arms and armor, diet, size and weight, movement; 'Classification' with flowcharts. Overall, these chapters hold-up reasonably well with other similar books, especially the classification pages. After the profiles there are chapters on extinction and dinosaur films.

The book then goes into genus profiles (usually of one page per dinosaur, sometimes two) of the bird-hipped dinosaurs for 50 pages then the lizard-hipped dinosaurs for another 60 pages. Each of these pages contains a Fact File with a grid showing the size of the dinosaur against a 6 foot man. Included in the Fact File is: Genus; Classification; Length; Weight; (When it) Lived; and where it was found (with a world map). Also included is a colour illustration of the dinosaur in a profile pose. The information is generally 3 to 4 paragraphs long and is very basic science. Normally there is information on distinguishing features and some comparison with cousins. Unfortunately, single dinosaurs are not covered in detail; it is only the genus - so if you are looking on the Tyrannosaurus page, you wont find anything on each of the tyrannosaurs (like Albertosaurus or Tarbosaurus). What you get is pretty much T.rex disguised as a generalised tyrannosaur.

Where I really think the book falls down is in it's interpretations of dinosaur behaviour and adaptations. There is quite a lot of information presented as fact when it is pure speculation. Also, there isn't any balance in arguments. For example, the profile on Carnotaurus states when mentioning its short snout 'that it could have got twisted and bent, particularly in struggles with large animals' suggsting that 'Cartnotaurus did not often attack animals of the same size or larger than itself, as its skull could not withstand such forces'. This is only providing one side of the argument (and the weaker side at that). There is currently strong debate about the diet of Carnotaurus due to the argument of how strong its jaws actually were, and whether it hunted in packs. I prefer information that is more balanced like the more accurate "The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia" by David Burnie. The information in "Nat Geo Dinosaur", however, is way more realistic than Gee and Rays "A Field Guide to Dinosaurs", but not as adequate as Parker's "Dinosaurus" which has individual species profiled.

On the positive side is the artwork of Raul Martin. I love habitat illustrations of dinosaurs that paint a vivid picture of life in the Mesozoic. And there is no better illustrator. As one other reviewer wrote, it is unfortunate that a number of his illustrations appear over two pages, but with 30 of these wonderful pictures on show, it is definately a plus for this book.

Overall, this is one of the best books for new students. It is easier to compare dinosaurs with each other size-wise and genealogy-wise compared with "Dinosaurus". Its illustrations are second to none and its information on dinosaurs is adequate. I do recommend "The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia" by David Burnie over this book, but if you are going to buy two - this is certainly the second choice.

We bought this for my five year old nephew who LOVES dinosaurs. He can read pretty well on his own and has enjoyed flipping through this book, reading and looking at the pictures. My husband also thought this book was awesome and wished he had had more time before Christmas to read this book before wrapping it up for our nephew!

I bought this for my grandchildren for Christmas and they loved looking through it. Beautiful pic's and fun to read together.

Like many other people, I am intrigued by the dinosaurs as well as other
citizens of the "Middle Life" mesozoic era. The book is divided into two sections. The first is general and discusses such areas as what the dinosaurs were, when they lived, what their environment was like and how they related to each other. The other portion deals with a large number of different dinosaur families, from the tiny musasauras(mouse lizard) to the gigantic seismosaurus, which was up to 160 feet long!The specific descriptions provide such information as when they lived, where they were found, and their size(Many times with a dinosaur/human comparison shown!).

Since the National Geographic Society has been a major sponsor of dinosaur research and expeditions, the photographs and technical details are excellent. The artwork by Raul Martin fleshes out the bones and reconstructions to provide insight into what these ancient citizens of earth would have looked like when they were alive and roaming freely.

I reccomend this book for all dinosaur fans from the five year old
on his or her first trip to the Museum to the "fossiles" like me who use their vacations to volunteer and help out on digs!

I've read 50 or more books on MLM and this is the definitive text. Dr. Barrett captures the MLM business as it "feels" to those of us who are involved in it. Self-motivation is often a lonely and depressing venture. Dr. Barrett understands this and speaks to it with more insight than anything else I've ever read.

On a personal note, I was privileged to meet and speak with Dr. Barrett. I found him to be knowledgeable, humble and truly interested in helping others to learn and grow.

This is the book I recommend to my own MLM team as well as the one I go to for inspiration and answers. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.

If you have forgotten where you came from or need direction where to go in your busy life with marketing, this is the book that will shed light into exploding your career into new heights.

If you are a network marketer, this is a must read!
You get a realistic look at the business and what it takes to make it.
The author points out what it takes: consistency, duplication and enough time. Discover the four ingredients for success and the three fuels to get you there. He says you need vision, courage and stamina to make it in this business and I couldn't agree more. This book has helped me to stay positive and stay with it as I built my team from 10 to 590 in under 10 months! It's a must-have! I loved this book. Mindy McCortney

This is terrific book. And, although it's written for Network Marketers in particular (and can truly help both the beginning and veteran Network Marketers to reach significantly higher levels of success within their companies), the wisdom contained in Dr. Barrett's teachings are applicable to any person in any field; assuming the goal of that person is to become a top producer and/or top leader.

While I found myself learning and re-learning ideas throughout the book that held significant value (highlighter and pen were used often and lots of pages are dog-eared - the sure sign of a book I found to be very valuable), there were certain chapters that were of such help, I had to realllllly slow down and be sure to absorb them.

While I won't spoil it here by trying to summarize in just a few sentences what he taught in an entire chapter, I will say that his concept of the "jelly in the donut" brought an entirely new understanding of "belief systems" and how they either help us or hurt us . . . usually, without our even knowing. He then expertly explained how to get the bad jelly out and the new, life-enhancing jelly in. If his explanation and teaching of just this one concept was all you read, it would still be worth many, many times the price of this book.

However . . . don't stop there. There is so much more to read and learn, as well. I tried to read just a bit at a time but couldn't do it; the more I read, the more I wanted to read and the more I looked forward to knowing.

What a great teacher. Thank you, Dr. Barrett. I'll be recommending this book a lot, both to Network Marketers and non-Network Marketers; I guess, then, I'll be recommending it to everyone.

It is refreshing to read a MLM book that actually tells it like it is. Dr Barrett explains in simple detail what steps you must take to win the Network Marketing game. It all starts with your decision. This is a book you will want to keep on your shelf and refer to many times.

Own the book and purchased extra copies as gifts. This book makes making soup quick and easy and I love the idea of fresh ingredients and lower salt.

Great recipes for soups, easy to make, with lovely photos of finished product.

One of my favorite cookbooks. I recommend it.

This is the 5th copy of this book we've bought. We give them as gifts to our busy friends who appreciate good food but don't have much time to cook a delicous, nutritious dinner every night. We especially love the blended soups that use chicken stock. Once blended they taste like a cream based soup without the fat and calories. When we give these as gifts we usually give a good immersion blender along with the book. We have found an immersion blender works so much easier than pouring the blended soups into a blender (less messy too). Our favorites: Potato Leek (blended) and Comfort Chicken Soup (with rice and spinach -- a balanced meal). I especially like the fact that the recipes are so easy to make that my husband loves to fix dinner. We have used the recipes in this cookbook at least once a week since we bought it 5 years ago. It's the best.

this book has a lot of useful information that helps in our fight for good health, fast, easy cooking and time saving. I have used some of the recipes and find them quite satisfactory.

Even though I almost never cook, the soups in this book are *so* simple and *so* tasty that I use it regularly. The format of the book is wonderful and the recipes extremely easy to understand and follow. Oh, and did I mention that they are delicious?! Do yourself a favor and make double quantities and freeze what you can't use right away. That way you can have tasty soup at hand through the winter.
