Humphrey Goes to the BallReview Date: 2003-09-01
In this one, Humphrey is overjoyed to be invited to the Mayor's Fancy Dress Ball. As it is a Fancy Dress Ball, Humphrey and Bird (Humphrey's faithful sidekick) must find something to dress up as. They decide to dress Humphrey up as a pirate, and Bird gets to be his parrot.
At the ball, Humphrey has a wonderful time dancing, especially when another hippo shows up. Humphrey gets exited, and dances wildly with the hippo. When the dance ends, Humphrey throws the hippo up in the air, and accidentally drops it! The hippo's head comes off, revealing the Mayor sitting in the rest of his costume.
Humphrey apologizes for dropping him on the floor, and the mayor responds " `No harm done, but I want you to do something for me.' `What's that' asked Humphrey. `Take some dancing lessons before next year's Ball!' "
This book is absolutely wonderful. Its style is straightforward and endearing. The pictures are bold, colorful and funny. This one is not my favorite in the series, but it is still wonderful. It is a big shame that this series is out of print.

Readable Literary Theory?!Review Date: 2005-01-15
The introduction provides an excellent survey of the development of postcolonialism. Ball discusses many of the major trends and theorists, and how their works fit into the new directions postcolonial theory is taking.
The remainder of the book is a carefully detailed examination of the position of London--actual or symbolic--in postcolonial literature, and the implications of London in a transnational framework.
Any student of recent trends in postcolonial theory should check this book out. Anyone else who is interested in seeing what the field is about will welcome the unpretentious language and the fact that Ball takes the time to define whatever jargon he uses in clear terms.

Inflation and the Theory of MoneyReview Date: 2006-05-11
The first part of the book reviews neo-classical and "Keynesian" type models of the closed macro-economy, analyzes determination of the general price level, and introduces a restatement of conventional employment theory with emphasis on the general price level.
The second part considers the problems of price and wage determinations and the demend for money in more detail, synthesizing the analyses into a model of the macro-economy and discussing the implications of this model and the preceding analysis for economic policy. Describing alternative approaches to the theory of inflation, each of which has resulted in partial theories, the book avoids fragmentary explanations by setting the entire discussion in the context of a macro-economic general equilibrium framework.
