Excellent View of the Railroad Era

Review Date: 2007-02-13
This is an informative and well-photographed look at U.S. railroads during the war decade of the 1940's. Authors Don Ball and Rogers Whitaker provide an excellent view of this once-mighty industry. Readers see what it was like to be a railroad engineer ("hogger") at the controls of a powerful steam engine on a mile-long freight train. We see the coal-shoveling fireman and ever-watchful brakeman that joined him up front, plus the rear brakeman and the conductor ("old man") in the copula. The book also teaches about passenger train crews, plus ancillary personnel such as switchmen, station masters, porters, roundhouse workers, rail crews, and telegraph operators. This superbly photographed book shows how vital railroads once were to the nation's economy and how much work it took to run one. We also sense the pride that rail workers feel about their craft, although their number has dwindled from nearly 1.5 million in 1945 to perhaps 250,000 at this writing.

This book should be of interest to both rail buffs and casual observers. You can read it straight through or merely peruse the photographs for reference. Either way you'll sense what transport was like in the years before jet travel and interstate highways, and you'll know why so many youngsters (and others) dreamed of being railroaders.

This book has excellent colour photographs of historic and modern glassware painting from teapots to champagne glasses to windows ; a comprehensive guide to materials and techniques - all accompanied by photographs. The step by step instructions for projects are easy to follow - again, photos all the way plus templates. The projects involve readily available items - bottles, jars, mirrors, glasses, small windows, photo frames, baubles, boxes, candlesticks. Simple to do and impressive when finished. I am always going back to this book.

The Little King is looking for his ball. Can you help him find it?

This sweet little board book takes us into the world of the Little King, a very popular character in German children's literature. In this book, he wants to play ball, but he has misplaced it somewhere. The reader is encouraged to help the Little King find his missing ball so he can go outside and play. The elusive ball is eventually found and the Little King can enjoy his playtime outside. When he is done, the Little King needs to come in and take a bath.

But now where is the Little King's missing rubber duckie?

This book clearly shows Ms. Balls' knowledge and experience in this field, and unlike many other titles, is written absolutely with the parent/carer in mind. There is no jargon, just pages of common sense approaches that apply not just to children who fall within the diagnosis of DCD, but for many other children who struggle to concentrate, sit still or just take part with their peers. It should be read, not just by parents, but by all child carers who are interested in providing the best possible care for the children they work with.

The BEST reference on the subject...

This book is a fabulous reference, especially to those of us who have a requirement to identify disease and recommend solutions to address/avoid further disease of herbaceous ornamentals. Almost too much information - which is never enough! Not as basic as the Rodale or Ortho books on the subject - this book has many levels of detail. Differentiation is the set of look-alike keys. Well worth the price as THE reference on the topic.

This is a classic story, richly illustrated by the masters at Disney. We bought the hardcover that comes with a clock. It's one of our daughter's favorite stories. You really can't go wrong with any of the Disney books.

From Furiiza To Vejitto

Fair warning - This book is written in Japanese! Just to prevent any confusion. Now on to the actual contents. Dragonball Daizenshyuu #5: TV Animation Part 2 is a great book to consider if you don't know Japanese but would like some great eyecandy, as well as a nice purchase if you do know Japanese and would like to fully research the series. While Book 2: Story Guide focuses mainly on the original manga of Dragonball, books 3 and 5 are based around the anime counterpart. It begins with a full summary of the Furiiza saga as well as the original airdates which serve as a link into pages full of images and information detailing the saga in "Acts". This section has some GREAT images, some of which are a full page. This section continues all the way through the Furiiza, Garlic Jr, Android, and Cell sagas before we are presented with a nice section on how scenes were handled in the anime as compared to the manga. Following the manga/anime comparison guide, we are treated to a multitude of short bios and sketches for many of the characters in the series from Gokuu to Majin Buu. Next we are treated to the Super Battle Scene pages we saw earlier in the book for Heaven's Tournament through the creation of Vejitto. Finishing off TV Animation Part 2 is lyrics for the two later Dragonball Z theme songs and a look into the "future" of DB (at the time, the "future" was the final battle with Majin Buu and Dragonball GT). Once again, the "last" pages contain an interview with Toriyama Akira himself, except this time after the interview are titles and summaries for Dragonball Z episodes 75-268. I definitely recommend the book to anyone who has basic knowledge of Japanese and wants to learn more about the series, or just anyone who wants to see some great images from the series and some that never made it in.

People might wonder how this book went by so fast. Alot of people just love it so much they read it in 15 minutes. I am one of those people. I really enjoyed this manga. I would also get Volumes 19 and 17 just to kind of get more info and finish a great chapter. This book you read pretty fast, but it is very action packed. This basically is a fine work of literary work and the pictures are great! It is Just plain old good!

Gohan goes to High School

Review Date: 2007-06-12
Dragon Ball Z Vol. 20 takes place 7 years after Vol. 19. Goku died fighting Cell, and Hercule (Mr. Satan in the Uncut Anime) took all the credit. This particular volume involves Gohan going to High School in Herculopolis, Meeting Hercule's daughter, becoming a superhero, and entering the Tenka'ichi Budokai. I don't wanna give away too much, so i'll just tell you to read it. It's a lot better than the Anime, trust me.
