Ball Books

Dubow's book is a political history of the ANC from 1912 to 1990. It's concise, analytical, well-written, and never loses sight of the broader South African context. Although there isn't much in it that's new, it's ideal for readers who want an introduction to the freedom struggle in South Africa but don't have time to wade through a multi-hundred page tome. It's a real gem. (I'm an American diplomat stationed in South Africa.)

Breda Sullivan's "After the Ball" is a brilliantcollection of poetry from one of the best - if not the best - Irish poets of the last century. Just breathtaking.

I researched many exercise ball resources on the 'how to' of ball exercises. Creager's 'Airobic Ball Strengthening Workout' was comprehensive, VERY affordable, and full of a wide variety of exercise options. Get it!

This book is well researched, well organized, and well written. It gives a complete view of the facts known about the tragically short life of one of WWI's bravest and best aviators. I recomend it highly.

Written one of the best researchers of Western history, this chronicle of one of the little-known robberies in Arizona history gets more engrossing chapter by chapter. Major Wham escorted an army payroll horseback train that was robbed by locals in southeast Arizona. The locals who were charged were Mormons in an area thick with the LDS, and the region in general was resentful toward the federal government. Local politics and the religious overtones make this a great read.

This is an awesome book for anyone. It's realistic and the dance story is fun. One of the things my child likes most is the different categories of boys....check it out!

Don Ball, Jr., photographer, artist, poet. More photos than in Railroads, as well as more text. Railroads is more of a "coffee table" book, with larger photos and only one per page. This one gives you twice as many photos and more description. The two books complement each other well. About half of the photos in this one are by other train photographers, but since they were chosen by Mr. Ball, you can be sure they're good. Another gorgeous, beautiful book by the master!

This book is a good read. Yes the book has plenty of self congraduations by Albert Spalding. But this was a great athlete who took himself off the field to become a richman in selling sporting goods and to lesser extent in the Chicago White Stockings (later to become known as the Chicago Cubs). Purely slanted to the owners point of view in collective bargaining and the need to keep players honest and the game clean. He believed that the owners kept baseball profitable and enjoyable for the fan. This book tells baseball from the perspective of 1860 to 1910, with no disadvantage of the knowledge of Babe Ruth, black sox scandal, or the million dollar ballplayer. This book will take you back to an earlier time.

This is a very good book for people who like to just look at the pictures. A lot of good pictures of North Americain Railways. Hard cover book. A must for train lovers.

I used this book in a college American literature class. It has tons of short stories and full text of a few novels. I forget which are the full text novels aside from "Huck Finn." One thing I like about this book is that it's diverse: it has the "traditional" American literature, but it also includes Richard Wright, Alice Walker, James Baldwin, etc. There are also really helpful footnotes that aide in understanding.
