A Good Addition to Existing Scholarship

I was most impressed by Michele Bogart's contribution to this exciting catalog and her expansion of the understanding of American artistic understanding of the city. The pictures in this exhibition highlight some very talented but overlooked artists and counteract the understanding that the city was not a popular artistic subject until the late-nineteenth/early-twentieth century by the American Impressionists like Childe Hassam. Bogart explains with depth and great clarity how these American artists saw and depicted New York in their work. This new tension is a great addition to existing scholarship.

A Vastly Underrated Statesman and American

This is a wonderful book by one of the finest American citizens of the 20th Century. From his work in analyzing the effectiveness of bombing campaigns in World War II, through his observations on Stevenson, Kennedy, Johnson, Humphrey, Carter (all of which he knew and served), as well as the opposition (especially Nixon), Ball's observations are essential to anyone who seeks to understand America and the world at mid and late 20th century. Especially telling is his principled opposition to the Vietnam War, and his story - unlike that of McNamara - shines with integrity. He opposed the war, but felt it important to remain in Johnson's cabinet as a lone voice of reason until he could absolutely no longer do so. Would all our leaders be as skilled and principled - and as wonderful writers -as George Ball. This is a wonderful, important and underrated book.

I am a writer by trade and the writing in this book is so fresh and original -- so silly and clever -- that it's one book my sons and I love equally. (Amazon says it's for up to 2nd graders, but my very sophisticated 4th grader also loves it as well as my kindergartner.) Mind you, the art direction is also nothing short of brilliant, full of tactile 3-D appeal, including yarn grass, vintage graph paper backdrops, and real cotton clouds. It's a treat for the eyes and the ears. I'm buying several copies to give to all my son's T-ball friends on their birthdays.

Another fantastic book

My kids love this Pecorino book as well. They want me to read it to them every night, and they just laugh and laugh at all of Pecorino's silliness. We can't wait to read about his next adventure/

Very easy to use reference on PA gardening. Not only includes information on plants that do well in the state, but planting and care instructions. Extensive list of PA gardens to visit will keep you busy for years to come. Detailed zone chart for the state is provided. I would recommended this for the beginner as well as experienced gardener.

After reading this book and putting in practice what I learned, I felt I had to come back here and post a comment on it. Let me tell you that this book became my Bible on golf. I have shown it to some of my golf friends and ALL of them ordered one. Even my brother who is handicap 2 and a golf fanatic ordered one. Mike covers ALL aspects of the golf swing: grip, stance, movement, etc. The comparison of the Classic and Modern swings is very well done and his tips, believe me, help a lot! If you had many golf professionals teaching you different things, you need a reference. I made this book my own.

The best overall golf instruction book I've ever seen!

I've been playing golf for over 25 years and this book has had THE most profound impact on my game. Coverage of the fundamentals is strong, but the parts that really made a difference were the chapters on the short game, including pitching, chipping, putting, and sand. The pitching and chipping techniques presented here are simple to learn and easy to remember. Best of all they helped me shave many strokes from my score!

I have to say that this book started it all with my child. It was given as a gift and we found that no other item would light up her down times. Pickle, in all his simplicity, is the purest form of reading for a 3-6 month old. It has simple pictures and one line reading. My daughter loves books and I attribute that to "Pickle and the ball". (By the way, I bought all 3 of the other Pickle books to add to her collection)

This text gives adults a trip down memory lane to their Little League days. It proves that many lessons were learned there, even though we just thought we were playing a game. Lowe's insight into his parents, coaches and teammates perceptions of the Little League experience provides a unique appreciation for the game of baseball and childhood experiences. Many of the tidbits mentioned here will ring true for baseball fans as well as for lovers of life, kids and memories of smelly socks and dirty uniforms

Useful, meaningful, practical, and pragmatic.

Review Date: 1999-06-01
The first of Reynolds' books, _Playing Ball_ is the gateway book. From one perspective, this book with its emphasis on practical, pragmatic ways of coping with life is all you'll ever need. However, you may find it so useful and meaningful that you will want the rest of his books, too, for exactly the same reasons. They're all useful on a day-to-day basis. The best part of _Playing Ball on Running Water_ is that there is no filler, no b.s.. It is all practical, useful, immediate, sensible advice. No matter what shape your life is in, this book can make it better. And it doesn't hurt that Reynolds is an excellent writer.

Blueprint for a purposeful life

"Playing Ball on Running Water" by David K. Reynolds is a book that advocates conscious living. The subtitle belays that concept, "The Japanese Way to Building a Better Life." Reynolds takes the Morita psychotherapeutic concepts and adapts them to Western life. The whole basis for this Morita approach is to live life by doing it. Doing it conscientious, with full awareness. This approach is based in Zen Buddhism and it is deceptively simple.

It is amazing that so many of us who are not present and get caught up worrying about the future and bemoaning the past. The book's contention is that we paralyze ourselves with thinking and speaking too much. Reynolds contends that we are not acting on life, not doing life, not actively observing where we are now and not noticing what is around us right now. "...every act provides the opportunity for purposeful accomplishment and personal growth. Every act can involve moments of directed attention."

The author's emphasis is on accepting the current state of being, not letting that keep you from moving on in life, and creating purposeful action. The doing is the important process, not the result. Not having your emotional state or your past keep you from going on at this moment is how Morita is applied. To put what Morita is succinctly, "...to teach students to accept feelings as they are, to know their purposes, and to do what needs to be done."

In summary, Reynolds does more than to illustrate what Morita psychotherapy is with client cases, with Zen Buddhist koans (puzzle), parables, and a clear process to follow. Reynolds gives the reader a blueprint to a life without regrets, to a life that you are fully responsible for.

Pakistani cricket may be inconsistent and at times downright fickle but it is also breathtaking, brilliant and passionate. Along with the other cricketing powers from South Asia, Pakistan is the new hub of this glorious sport. And what a histroy it has had. Without a doubt it has produced some of the most talented cricketers over the last five decades and continues to churn them out at a rapid pace. Omar Noman's book brilliantly captures the evolution and the several mini-revolutions of this great cricketing tradition. A harmonious balance has been struck between the communication of facts which would interest the diehard fan and the telling of the tale which would interest even the uninitiated. This book fills the proverbial gap as far as decent books on the subject are concerned. This book is a must for all serious lovers of the game and highly recommended to all others. The writer clearly takes pride in the heroics produced by this cricketing nation and writes about them with passion. His enthusiasm is irresistable and makes the book very special.
