This is by far the most thoughtful presentation I have read about children's spiritual nurture (and I've read most of the titles now available on the market). Fowler's clsssic may be the standard for explaining stages of spiritual formation, but Dr. Stonehouse truly fleshes out children's experience of faith and how parents and educators can most effectively feed children spiritually. She writes from a Christian perspective. Her approach is scholarly and draws from solid research, yet the text is engaging and highly readable with wise suggestions parents will want to implement. It is not a gimmick-filled idea book, but rather a well grounded guide in understanding, encouraging, and joining children on a shared spiritual journey. Dr. Stonehouse shows great insight into children's experience of faith at various stages, and gives parents and the wider church family a solid understanding of how to share a rich, worshipful life with kids. Besides the clear writing, the strength of this book is the wisdom it imparts that nurturing a life of faith is as much about adults growing and maturing as it is about their modeling and encouraging spiritual growth for children. This book will prove valuable to parents, christian educators, Sunday school program directors, and those in relational ministry to children. She includes a great bibliography.

Revealers of God's Character

In describing heaven Gerstner quotes Edwards on what it means,by virtue of the Christians union with Christ,to possess all things p.15 "I mean that God,three in one,all that He is,and all that He has and all that He does, and all that He has made or done, the whole universe, bodies and spirits, light, heaven, angels, men and devils,sun,moon,stars,land,sea...are as much the Christians as the money in his pocket, the clothes he wears or the house he dwells in... ." Mr. Gerstner quotes Jonathan Edwards extensively because he believed it helps to capture the very spirit of the man. I agree with Gerstner wholeheartedly which is why I always like to include at least one quote when I review any book because it does give the reader something of the spirit, personality and style of the books authuor when some of their exact written words are given. We learn much about our creator from his written word as well as the human instruments that our Lord was pleased to use giving us His word. Some believe that Edwards was not balanced in that his preaching emphasized hell and comparatively ignored heaven. Edwards preached much on heaven as any reader of this book will see. The Bible speaks more about hell than heaven and so did Jonathan Edwards. His motive for doing this was that his hearers would be sufficiently warned and by God's grace would escape His wrath and judgement. Edwards is throughly Biblical even when it comes to truths that are difficult to speak and as difficult to comprehend. For example the fact that saints will rejoice in the judgement of the damned(even those who they may have known well in this life),not because there is reason to rejoice at others suffering for its own sake, but because the justice and majesty of God will be revealed in their judgement. The description and warnings on hell are numerous and powerful. One example will suffice p.62"The sinner spends all his time here gathering fuel for his own fire there.Every continuance in sin adds to the heat of hell-fire.The longer sinners live, the more wrath they accumulate."Edwards descibes heaven and the fact that the happiness of heaven is progressive. It is so profitable for saints to contemplate on heaven. It helps them to bear the trials and suffering they are called upon to endure in this life. There is a treasure of food for thought on the glories that await the Christian in the life to come and dire warnings to flee from the wrath of the living God.Both will surely be unspeakable.

One of the greatest summations I have ever read!!

This may sound strange, but I rank this little book as one of the two greatest paperback books that a man could own. (you'll have to guess the other)
Why the stupendous claim? Edwards was one of the greatest minds ever given to the Christian Church, and he had an amazing way of seeing life, through the lenses of Scripture, and understanding, like a photo-negative, what hell must be like. Hell, like the beauties of Heaven, is unable to be expressed in human language, and therefore, it can only be "seen" through the use of symbolic language. The horror of hell can not be uttered: if a man were to see hell, he could not live. Like Paul in the vision of Heaven, there are no faculties within natural man to express what he experienced. Edwards finds a way to help.

When you read Edwards on Heaven, you feel almost "other-worldly", ("how long have I been sitting here reading this??), and when you read Edwards on Hell, the holy dread that fills your mind and emotions is overwhelming, as well as life-changing. Dr. Gerstner goes for the Truth, which he unashamedly owns, and has a true gift of representing Edwards' sight to anyone who cares to see. Gerstner does not write with "one eye on impressing the scholar", but with a deep care for the reader, almost pleading with us: "Hear Edwards! If you hear him, you will hear Paul, and therefore, you will HEAR CHRIST!".

This is one of the most unique books I have ever had the pleasure to read. The powerful storyline weaves suspense and mystery with truths and insights on the human condition. Dr. Baker takes the reader on a spirtual journey which blends teaching with entertainment. After reading Josua's Way, I have gained more understanding into the events which have effected me in my own life.

This book was meticulous researched and thoughtfully executed throughout. I especially found the chapter on the Butcher Bros. scandal captivating. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in East Tennessee judicial and, in fact, cultural history.

More than a history of the US District Court

The subtitle for Dr. Brake's fine book, "A Bicentennial Perspective of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee," does not do full justice to the scope of the book. The Chapters on the Secession Crisis (3) and the Civil War (4) are important enough to warrant five stars. East Tennessee may have been the most equally divided on the question of secession in the nation and maintaining the court system was not easy. The book has excellent Notes, Bibliography and Index for the researcher. Highly recommended.

I am a blood relative of President Jack Kennedy

The Kennedy Mystique is a wonderful book. My 7 year old Daughter likes to look at the pictures. My Exwife gave me heck because at school my 7 year old Daughter said she was a relative of President Kennedy and none of her classmates believed her and told the teacher she was making up stories. I have computer printouts from Ancestry dot com showing the relationship between my Great Great Grandfather David Doughty Morgan 1851 to 1915 and President Jack Kennedy. Like the early Christians were persecuted I was told I was crazy at my Church for saying I was a blood Kennedy realtive until I brought in the Computer printouts proving this to be true. The coauthor of this book mister Dallek makes the writing about the Kennedy family Prestigious. Dont just look at the pictures, read about Americas greatest Family the Kennedys. My prior reviews about President Kennedy being alive have been deleted. Lets see what happens this time. I invoke freedom of speech for keeping this Amazon review on the internet. Write a response to whether you believe Brad Morgan (Kennedy) is the real American Shadow Vice President a tradition that goes back to 1774 and the Continental Congress and is Constitutional.

This book is a Keeper for all J.F.K Fans the world over. I love the excellent visuals and the superb writing from the trendsetters of that era. This book makes you feel as if you are transported back to the early 1960s and you feel as if you are witnessing history from a front seat balcony. Many of the photographs have never been seen before. Pick up this book for your Library today and relive those brief, shining moments in history!

I found this book to be very informative. Anyone that encounters this situation should be well equipped to deal with the Witnesses in a timely and direct manner after reading this book. Knock Knock explains various
aspects of the religion as well as gives several examples of questions and scriptures that one can use when speaking with them so that you can direct the conversation. The book is easy to read and understand. I admit I dreaded it when they came to my door because of not knowing what to say but now I feel I have an opportunity to help someone that has been lead down the wrong path. What a blessing that will be! Praise God!!

Very informative book, and an easy read.

I read this book recently and I found it to be quite informative. It really lays out for the lay person the foundation for addressing topics raised by JW's and for also planting seeds in their minds as to whether their beliefs are Biblically based. It was a relatively easy read, and I enjoyed it. I'll be prepared next time a JW comes to my door, and hopefully I can help them see the light.

In CARTOONIST, Kyle Baker gives his hilarious take on everything from politics, to religion, to love and family life! Like a Robert Benchley essay or Andy Rooney tirade, these cartoons make you think about things you see every day in a fresh and funny way. My favorite part of CARTOONIST is the section on "THE BAKERS," Kyle's cartoons based on his own family life. His cartoons poking fun at his life with a wife and little kids are like a modern-day "FAMILY CIRCUS!" Anyone who has been driven crazy by their family but still loves them to death will get a huge kick out of "THE BAKERS." I hope there will be lots more "BAKERS" cartoons to come!

Political humor, family hijinks, truly exquisite cartooning - if you're ever choking on a chicken bone and there's none about to apply the Heimlich Maneuver, grab this book! The convulsions may save your life.

This book is not only gorgeous to browse through yet exceptionally poetic and useful at the same time. It is a bilingual book- french and english with absolutely fabulous illustrations to aid the imagination. Sucha lovely work and an intriguing way to involve both adults and children into Baudelaire's complex poetry. Well done!

The translation here strays a bit from the original for the sake of making it rhyme. Although this may raise the eyebrows of some purists, I feel that the english version has charms of its own. The design of this book is really outstanding, and the old duo-tone photographs used to illustrate it are quite poetic in their own right, and seem even more so as a result of the way they are combined with the text. The book as a whole evokes images of a lost paradise, which I have never seen expressed so well outside of the writings of Proust. I even like the way it smells! This would make an excellent gift for any lover of poetry or photography.

I'm currently undertaking a major project for a Doctor of Ministry degree on implementing policy governance into the board structure of our church. This book by Malphurs (which he describes as "a seminal work")is the best work I have found on the subject and will be a manual for board governance in this decade, and perhaps the next. He has custom fit John Carver's policy governance model for non-profit organizations to the church, saving church leaders time and effort in the figuring out how to adapt Carver's model to their board form and function. The value-added feature of the book is that almost half is appendices that provide 'templates' for any church seeking to clarify their board-staff relationships, and empower both elders and pastors in their respective roles. The book is groundbreaking and offers a significant boost to any church wanting to get off the ground in organizing and mobilizing their leadership for effective ministry.

A Book Long Overdue!

For the pastors of board-driven churches, this book is long overdue. There is a plethora of Christian leadership titles on the market, but they all are geared towards pastoral or individual roles. In this book, Malphurs focuses on the need for church board members to be well-trained as they lead congregations into the 21st century. With his rock-solid thought processes and meticulous attention to detail, the author presents a volume that is destined to be a God-send to many struggling churches. I've read many church health authors, and Malphurs is one of my favorites. I recommend this book highly.
