This introductory volume to the Guides to New Testament Exegesis series is a veritable goldmine of useful information on the different genres of interpretation. Short overviews of each genre by well known scholars give you a good grasp of the importance of that particular area of interpretation and the pitfalls and fallacies that present themselves with inaccurate exegesis. While a basic knowledge of Greek is suggested, it is well worth the price of the book for the excellent overview of New Testament background; NT word analysis; sociology and NT exegesis; NT theological analysis; and the function of the OT in the NT - none of which require any Greek. Gets right to the point with meaty information - no throw-away stuff here.

An absolute "must-read" for any male or female visitor to Iran

Patricia Baker is a lecturer, writer and tour leader specializing in Islamic are and having traveled to Iran over 16 times since her first visit in 1971. She draws from his considerable experience and expertise in Iran: The Bradt Travel Guide to provide the tourist, student, or businessman with guidance on cultural awareness, religious sensitivity, and absolute do's and don'ts as well as a region-by-region guideline to getting around in different areas of Iran with black-and-white maps to follow. An absolute "must-read" for any male or female visitor to Iran, as familiarity with rules and customs could spare one from an unhappy detention; for example, the Iranian prohibition against cards, gambling and backgammon extends to such things as fuzzy car dice, woman must not walk unescorted at night or they will be presumed prostitutes, and no visitor should eat, drink, or smoke during the daylight hours of the Ramadan religious holidays regardless of their personal faith, else the repercussions to themselves and their sponsors will be severe. Yet Iran: The Bradt Travel Guide is far more than a list of proscriptions and warnings; it is also a tour of the cultural and historical wonders of Iran, a glimpse into the recent transformations of the society, and an in-depth guide of where to go and what to experience. Now in an updated second edition, Iran: The Bradt Travel Guide is a "must-have" for visitors who want not only to see the sights of this proud nation, but to understand its character as much as possible.

I have thoroughly enjoyed going through this book. I have not been able to try everything, but what I have tried works. The book is written so that it is easy to follow. There are hundreds and hundreds of "recipes" and tips which can be used to remedy any number of situations around the house/yard/garden. The best thing is that most of the ingredients were already in my kitchen cabinet - at least for the things that I've wanted to try so far. I also appreciate that this book provides alternative methods to the use of hazardous chemicals/pesticides. Additionally, this book provides a wonderful offering of recipes for self-care (pampering) such as lotions and tonics, and hair and skin care. Even if you've never even THOUGHT about making your own "stuff," this book will introduce you to any number of concoctions that you can have fun experimenting with. I highly recommend this book... have fun seeing what works for you!

Awesome book! This is one of three texts for my "Discipleship and Evangelism" course at Bible College. I highly recommend reading the three books together (also purchased from Amazon at great prices!). The other two are: "Living Proof: Sharing The Gospel Naturally" by Jim Petersen and "The Master Plan of Evangelism" by Robert E. Coleman. These books totally changed my life relative to discipleship and evangelism - both practically and theoretically!

Zachman does a masterful job of illustrating how Calvin went about the task of "teaching every single man, woman, and child how to read Scripture for themselves, so that they migh apply its genuine meaning to every aspect of their lives" (p. 7; he also demonstrates just how profound was Calvin's theological thought. Calvin exemplified the model of a Reformed Pastor in his desire to see his people formed in the way of Christ as well as "doing theology" in the pastor's study. In an age of "seeker sensitive" churches and man/woman centered lifestyles, Calvin stands out as a beacon for pastors seeking to go deeper. Zachman is to be lauded for presenting Calvin in a clear and accessible manner.

Zachman is to be congratulated for his fine book on John Calvin. It was a pleasure to read and the author clearly knows his material. As a introduction to Calvin in his context and the purpose for his ministry and writing, Zachman cannot be beaten. I loved the book and thought it was a clear and wonderful contribution to understanding the Genevan Reformer, John Calvin. Zachman has left us all in his debt. Particularly those of us who are Presbyterian ministers!

This is by far the most thoughtful presentation I have read about children's spiritual nurture (and I've read most of the titles now available on the market). Fowler's clsssic may be the standard for explaining stages of spiritual formation, but Dr. Stonehouse truly fleshes out children's experience of faith and how parents and educators can most effectively feed children spiritually. She writes from a Christian perspective. Her approach is scholarly and draws from solid research, yet the text is engaging and highly readable with wise suggestions parents will want to implement. It is not a gimmick-filled idea book, but rather a well grounded guide in understanding, encouraging, and joining children on a shared spiritual journey. Dr. Stonehouse shows great insight into children's experience of faith at various stages, and gives parents and the wider church family a solid understanding of how to share a rich, worshipful life with kids. Besides the clear writing, the strength of this book is the wisdom it imparts that nurturing a life of faith is as much about adults growing and maturing as it is about their modeling and encouraging spiritual growth for children. This book will prove valuable to parents, christian educators, Sunday school program directors, and those in relational ministry to children. She includes a great bibliography.

In describing heaven Gerstner quotes Edwards on what it means,by virtue of the Christians union with Christ,to possess all things p.15 "I mean that God,three in one,all that He is,and all that He has and all that He does, and all that He has made or done, the whole universe, bodies and spirits, light, heaven, angels, men and devils,sun,moon,stars,land,sea...are as much the Christians as the money in his pocket, the clothes he wears or the house he dwells in... ." Mr. Gerstner quotes Jonathan Edwards extensively because he believed it helps to capture the very spirit of the man. I agree with Gerstner wholeheartedly which is why I always like to include at least one quote when I review any book because it does give the reader something of the spirit, personality and style of the books authuor when some of their exact written words are given. We learn much about our creator from his written word as well as the human instruments that our Lord was pleased to use giving us His word. Some believe that Edwards was not balanced in that his preaching emphasized hell and comparatively ignored heaven. Edwards preached much on heaven as any reader of this book will see. The Bible speaks more about hell than heaven and so did Jonathan Edwards. His motive for doing this was that his hearers would be sufficiently warned and by God's grace would escape His wrath and judgement. Edwards is throughly Biblical even when it comes to truths that are difficult to speak and as difficult to comprehend. For example the fact that saints will rejoice in the judgement of the damned(even those who they may have known well in this life),not because there is reason to rejoice at others suffering for its own sake, but because the justice and majesty of God will be revealed in their judgement. The description and warnings on hell are numerous and powerful. One example will suffice p.62"The sinner spends all his time here gathering fuel for his own fire there.Every continuance in sin adds to the heat of hell-fire.The longer sinners live, the more wrath they accumulate."Edwards descibes heaven and the fact that the happiness of heaven is progressive. It is so profitable for saints to contemplate on heaven. It helps them to bear the trials and suffering they are called upon to endure in this life. There is a treasure of food for thought on the glories that await the Christian in the life to come and dire warnings to flee from the wrath of the living God.Both will surely be unspeakable.

This may sound strange, but I rank this little book as one of the two greatest paperback books that a man could own. (you'll have to guess the other)
Why the stupendous claim? Edwards was one of the greatest minds ever given to the Christian Church, and he had an amazing way of seeing life, through the lenses of Scripture, and understanding, like a photo-negative, what hell must be like. Hell, like the beauties of Heaven, is unable to be expressed in human language, and therefore, it can only be "seen" through the use of symbolic language. The horror of hell can not be uttered: if a man were to see hell, he could not live. Like Paul in the vision of Heaven, there are no faculties within natural man to express what he experienced. Edwards finds a way to help.

When you read Edwards on Heaven, you feel almost "other-worldly", ("how long have I been sitting here reading this??), and when you read Edwards on Hell, the holy dread that fills your mind and emotions is overwhelming, as well as life-changing. Dr. Gerstner goes for the Truth, which he unashamedly owns, and has a true gift of representing Edwards' sight to anyone who cares to see. Gerstner does not write with "one eye on impressing the scholar", but with a deep care for the reader, almost pleading with us: "Hear Edwards! If you hear him, you will hear Paul, and therefore, you will HEAR CHRIST!".

This one is the introductory but then there is a "guide" for each of the other genre of the NT in the series, all of which are really good. They are a bit "scholarly" but very useful and readable. If you are a Bible teacher of any capacity (from Pastor to SS teacher to Bible Study leader) you really should consider looking in to this series.
