Although a short read,I was amazed how this book helps one understand the stages of grief. Being a skeptical person I was surprised how the book put deep thoughts into words. I even felt better after reading the first 10 pages! Nothing can ever replace a loved one. But, it is better to understand one's own feelings to be able to enjoy life more.

Cheapest and best advice I have ever received.

I've never written a review on a book before, but feel so strongly about this book that I'm taking the time to do so. My father died suddenly last fall and I purchased this book for myself, my mother, sisters and other family members. We all found great comfort in Ms. Kolf's words. It is a book you can pick up and read any chapter at any time. It is an easy read. I found myself reading and re-reading it night after night to get through those most difficult moments. Now, I give this book to others when they suffer a loss, and everyone I've given this to tells me how helpful this book is to them, too, in dealing with their heartache.

Highly Recommend This Book

We lost our beloved 24 year-old son recently. Ms. Kolf's words have provided comfort and understanding where none seems possible. I would highly recommend this book to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one.

When my Mother passed away, a friend gave me this book to read. It was such a help to me, I gave it to my brother to read also. Since then, whenever we know someone who losses a loved one, we send them this book. Everyone has always come back and said what a help it was to them. If someone you know needs comfort, send them this book!

I have been gaming for about eight years now, and have played almost every class available. I was leary about playing psionists until I read this book, and let me tell you it changed my mind completely. This book not only brings to the forefront a class that should, by all rights, have few equals, it also delves into many areas that allow one character to stand out more from the rest of a party. Anybody can play thieves and fighters, and logical people can make a cleric or mage useful, but making a psion a strength to a group while not completely destroying the cohesiveness of the group is the key to gaming. This book allows a psion to be strong with out overpowering the rest of a party. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to allow psions in their campaign.

This is a definite must have for any AD&D gamer who is considering allowing the art of Psionics into their campaign. The powers and proficiencies found within truely set the Psionicist class where they should be on the power scale.

This book is where Psionics gets serious

For those who really want to delve into psionics this book is a must. It clears up most of the confusion that one might feel after reading the Psionics handbook. Expanded rules and examples of empored items, a ton of great new powers, sample NPCs, and a bunch of other cool stuff including High Sciences! The rules that this book sets out for psionic research and improvement are yet another great addition to the Psionicist class. Forget all those stacks of mage books and just get this one. Between this and the psionics players handbook you'll have everything you need.

I've looked for years for a basic book about women explorers and women who have been adventurous through the ages. Finally here is something that is beautiful, readable, and a great introduction to a group that has been overlooked by most historians. A must read especially for young women/teens who are influenced by the social and cultural values still pushed upon them in society. Great illustrations, photos and layout as well.

I have been waiting for a book like this to come along for a very long time. Milbry Polk and Mary Tiegreen's Women of Discovery is truly a celebration of intrepid women down through the ages. Women who conquered fear, resentment, discrimination, finance or lack of education in face of the then prevailing conditions that intimidated and inhibited them from having an unobstructed opportunity to pursue their dreams. Some of these women faced incredible challenges and most of them contributed substantially to our knowledge of the world. . The authors of this book have given us a chance to read about 82 brave but very different women beginning with the early Christian pilgrims in the Middle Ages. Women such as Elizabeth Van Der Woude, Catalina de Erauso, Jeanne Baret and Isabel Grandmaison y Bruno Godin who received no mention during the age of discovery in the 15th to the 18th centuries while their male counterparts, Cortez, Magellan and deGama received fame and glory. The book brings us to the present with the achievement of Louise Hose, an American geologist who, because of her passion for discovery, lead her into the dark, unexplored caves of Mexico and the finding of new life forms.

The book also obviously identifies familiar names like Amelia Mary Earhart, Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Mary Leakey, and Margaret Mead. The written biographies range from 500 to 1500 words and almost virtually "come to life" by the authors' use of photography, cartography, watercolors, and drawings.

After reading this book, one could never forget the story of Sue Henderson, the fossil hunter and explorer, who from a very young age chose the pursuit of outdoor nature. At seventeen, she dropped out of school and made a living by finding incredible things underwater. Many pieces of her amber collection reside in the American Museum of Natural History. She is best remembered as a woman who discovered the fossilized Tyrannosaurus Rex in The Badlands of South Dakota in 1990. Appropriately named "Sue" by her colleagues, this 67 million year old creature is one of the world's best examples of dinosaurs and earned $8.36 million at auction.

Another chapter is devoted to Stephanie Schwabe, a geomicrobiologist who, after losing her world-renowned scientist husband in a diving accident, continued his work of discovery in underwater caves formed some ten million years ago. She wrote that "the human race has forgotten what is valuable in life. That true wealth is not money and material things, but the health of your environment and the understanding of it." In her continuing exploration of underwater caves called Blue Holes or the much deeper Black Holes of the world's oceans, Ms Schwabe is credited as discovering totally new species of bacteria.

This book is the perfect gift for every young woman. It is certainly a well- researched tutorial about the brave women who have paved the way for today's modern woman to pursue and achieve her dreams. .

As an admirer of Christiane Amanpour, a CNN broadcast journalist, I can think of no other woman more qualified to be called upon to provide the foreword to this most remarkable and inspiring book.

This is a terrific book and should be given to all girls over the age of 10. My life could have been different if I'd known there were so many wonderful women over the centuries pushing the limits in a multitude of authentic ways. This book is inspiring, motivating and a tear jerker all at the same time.

My mother used to read this book to "us kids" almost 40 years ago. When my own children were small, I spirited the volume away to my house, to continue the tradition.

Recently I wrote a college paper on fairy tales. Looking for a source to reference the tales themselves, I turned to Young Years. I was amazed at the wealth of information it possesses- apparently overlooked the first two times through.

This book serves as an exceptional reference material for college coursework. Not only will you find the familiar favorites, you will also discover lesser-known tales to support and broaden your thesis.

This was among the very first books I ever read, and I read it cover to cover several times. It is not one story but an all-encompassing collection of fairy tales, poems, bedtime stories and general childhood mythology. If you heard it as a kid, or the Grimm brothers spooked your ancestors with it, or Disney made a warm-n-fuzzy adaptation of it, it's probably in here somewhere.

It was a great kickstart to my own imagination. Every household with a child between the ages of 5 and 12 should have access to something like Young Years.

As a pastor, I enjoyed this commentary very much (I actually read it cover to cover). I thought her arguments were interesting and well-researched and provided helpful insights for preaching and teaching. She does argue, with interesting original research that the Apostle Peter could very well have written the letter, both in terms of the letter's time frame and the way the Greek is written. Additionally, she provides a useful understanding to whom the letter may have been written that explains well what is in the text. I'd highly recommend this commentary to others.

I wish I could put 6 stars!!!!

Karen Jobes (Ph.D. Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia) currently is Gerald F. Hawthorne professor of Greek and New Testament in Wheaton College. When she wrote this commentary, she was still in Westmont College in Santa Barbara as associate professor of New Testament. She has proven her ability as competent exegete and expositor by writing a commentary on Esther for NIVAC series.

I just wonder why there haven't any review for this great commentary. The new volume in the prestigious BECNT by Dr. Jobes is outstanding. Highly readable, clear in reasoning and presented in reader friendly format. She spends 57 pages for introduction and 266 pages for commentary.

I think Dr. Jobes's excursus of the syntax in 1 Peter (325-38) will be her original contribution to researches in the letter. There she proves the assumption for the impossibility to fisherman like Peter wrote such a well written letter untenable. Recent archaeological evidence has indicated that the Greek culture and language may have had more a presence in Galilee. So "corresponding to the debated prevalence of the Greek language in Galilee is the prevalence of the use of the LXX." Yes, Septuagint is her area of expertise. She had written an introduction to the Septuagint with the prominent exegete Moises Silva. Approaching 1 Peter from the LXX point of view, I believe, will take Jobes to the conversant voice among scholars who studied the letter socio-culturally or socio-rhetorically as John H. Eliott and Paul J. Achtemeier.

I do not mean that Jobes' knowledge of the social backgrounds is not as rich as the two scholars. Prove it by coming across her account on the Noah story in Asia Minor and the development of other alternative interpretations when she explores ch. 3.18-22 (245-51).

For busy pastors, who keep the vision of being scholar-pastor, the current volume is a mine of the most recent scholarship as well as rich spirituality. Most of all, Reformed pastor will get the volume quickly. I have one, how about you?

Great Exposition of 1 Peter

Karen Jobes does a great job expounding 1 Peter. She shows that the audience Peter was writing to were Jewish believers in Christ moved to Pontus, Cappadocia, and other parts of Asia Minor by the edicts of Claudius expelling them from Rome. Peter is writing to these "strangers and aliens in the world" by showing them how to live for Christ in a world hostile to Christianity.

She drives this home in our discussion of the roles of citizens, slaves, and spouses in 1 Peter 2:11-3:7. She says that Peter wisely leaves many of the specifics of submission to the spouses while also noting the purpose of submission (1 Peter 3:2, 7).

There are a few places where I wish the exegesis was a tad deeper, say for instance in 1 Peter 3:8-12, where the words "harmony" and "humility" are discussed in detail but there isn't as much discussion about sympathy and compassion.

But Jobes has a great handle on 1 Peter and it is the best commentary on this epistle in print today. She also has appropriate areas of application and challenge, and a lot of thought and hard work went into this book. She knows the scholarly literature very well, and takes on the theories of J.H. Elliott and J.K. Elliott, as well as older interpreters like Selwyn and Best.

A nice job all around!

A neat little book to set on your nightstand, coffee table, or reference shelf 444 Surprising Quotes About Jesus is alive with interesting and devotional material. Divided into nine sections, the quotes look at many facets of our Lord. Between Phillips Brooks "Jesus Christ, the condescension of divinity, and the exaltation of humanity." (9) to A. W. Tozer's "Promoting self under the guise of promoting Christ is currently so common as to excite little notice." (177) you'll bathe your mind in 208 pages of confronting excerpts. To make this book easier to use, the compiler has closed with a Guide to Themes, an Index of Sources, and a bibliography.

Just to whet your interest, here are a few more quotes. Mother Teresa, "Many people mistake our work for our vocation. Our vocation is the love of Jesus." (56) Antony of Padua, "Christ is the dazzling bright sun who covered himself with a cloud in order to be seen." (125) St. Augustine, "Christ is the best husband." (128) Harvey Cox,"There has never been a better raconteur than Jesus of Nazareth." (137) Joni Eareckson Tada, "No other religion or philosophy promises glorified bodies, hearts and minds. Only in the Gospel of Jesus Christ do hurting people find such incredible hope." (165) There are a myriad sources, including: George MacDonald, Eleanor Roosevelt, Luis Palau, Ulrich Zwingli, Calvin Miller, Christina Rossetti, and Paul Bunyon.

The compiler, Dr. Isabella Bunn, is an interesting person - international lawyer, theologian, Christian social ethics specialist, a college associate director. Bunn's vast library has provided many of the citations in 444 Surprising Quotes About Jesus. - Donna Eggett, Christian Book Previews.com

Over many years, Dr. Isabella D. Bunn has compiled a fascinating and memorable collection of quotes about Jesus from philosophers, artists, statesman and writers.

The themes include:

Jesus as God and Man
The Life and Teachings of Jesus
The Love of Jesus
Life in Christ
Jesus as Savior
The Power of the Cross
Images of Jesus
Jesus and History
His Spiritual Legacy

This small book is just the size to toss into your bag and carry it with you to read whenever you have a few spare moments. It is filled with big quotes that will give you a new understanding of Jesus.

There are many quotes that were memorable for me. Some of my favorites:

They should have known that he was God. His patience should have proved that to them. Tertullian (c. 160-225) Church father from Carthage.

A man who was completely innocent offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act. Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) Indian Statesman and Pacifist

My favorite is: To be like Christ is to be a Christian. William Penn (1644-1718) English Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania.

Armchair Interviews says: This book is rich with wonderful thoughts. Those thoughts will give you food for thought and feed you at the same time.

I just bought this book and read first few "ideas" and found the book impressive. You can read sample pages at Amazon, so I am not going to go into details. Book, paper, and print are of very high quality. Material is easy to read and mostly in simple language without much technical talk. Each "idea" (theorm, law, etc.) takes 4 pages and contain related information on the sidebars. For example, in the idea that explains Newton's laws of motion, there is a section describing Newton's life.

In my opinion, one can use this book to refresh their memory of what they have learnt while studying AS WELL AS lean new things that weren't taught in school.

I am happy with the purchase.

Concise overviews
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-11
This book contains 50 concise overviews of important ideas that form the basis of classical and modern physics. They are grouped into five sections, namely:
· Matter in Motion (mostly classical physics, such as Newton's laws of motions and Kepler's laws, but with some more modern ideas such as Chaos theory).
· Beneath the Waves (wave behavior of light, electromagnetic waves and Maxwell's equations).
· Quantum Conundrums (quantum mechanics, including Planck's law of black body radiation, photoelectric effect, Schrodinger's wave equation, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and superconductivity).
· Splitting Atoms (structure of the atom, atomic fission and fusion, the standard model of particle physics and string theory)
· Space and Time (special and general relativity, the big bang theory, black holes, dark matter and dark energy).

The specific topics listed above represent only 20 of the 50 ideas covered in the book, each of which is presented in exactly four pages. Each idea is supplemented with boxes containing some extended discussion of a particular point, some quotations concerning the idea and biographical information about some scientists. Given that only four pages are allotted to each idea, the presentation is necessarily only superficial, but the author did a very good job of compressing the most salient points into a very limited space.

This is a good book for those who only want an general overview of some very important ideas, presented without any math, for a general audience. It is also a useful review book for those who know are better versed in physics. Some very complex ideas (such as Newton's bucket, the difference between Fraunhoffer and Fresnel diffraction, Feynman diagrams and the Anthropic principle) that are often not discussed in basic physics texts are covered. This is thus more than just an elementary overview of physics.

Given that the author has been limited to only 50 ideas (this book is part of a series of 50 idea books) there are those who will quibble about the choices that were made. I for one think that they were reasonably comprehensive (although I would have liked to see more thermodynamics) and I highly recommend this book.

I first read this book about 16 years ago after my Dad gave it to me. I have read it about ten times since and still have it. I honestly do not think I will ever read a book again in my life that will have the same profound effect on me that this book accomplished. Everyone has someone who they look up to, Pat Pattle, to me is that person. If there is anyone who has any photos of Pat Pattle other than the general two published in books I would be most interested in getting a copy from them.

I was pretty familiar with the history of this subject, but was more interested in the archeological finds. For instance, in the world of shooting today the 50-70 is all but forgotten yet there were more 50-70 cases and cartridges found than any other caliber. The thing about some of the long shots the hunters made during the siege is that the authors point out that the hunters had no doubt tested their prowess at different targets at different distances, so had probably already "marked" many of the shots and distances. Good reference for anyone studying the battle, I am going to the site this summer, and read this as a preface...Ivery

I applaud you Charles Noland!!! This book is LONG overdue! I am a mother of 2 boys ages 9 and 11. They both read this book and really enjoyed it. After reading so many "sports" related books with my boys, I found "The Magical Dress" very refreshing for young readers. My boys liked guessing how Drew and Ellie would figure out their dilemma. As a parent; I especially liked the many themes within the story.....the love between Drew and Ellie and their mother, the "Golden Rule" aspect between siblings and the "nothing can stop me" attitude that Drew and Ellie displayed through teamwork and problem solving. My boys (me included) can't wait for the next book!

As a mother of two young boys, this book is a winner in our house! The adventure that Drew and Ellie embark on is full of twists and turns. It certainly keeps my prereader and young reader on the edge of their seats, without being scary (like so many children's adventure books can be). They like the way Drew takes good care of Ellie and how she trusts him, just like they themselves are encouraged (by me!) to always look out for each other. After all, I want them to learn that siblings can -- and should be -- best friends. From a parent's perspective, the book cuts through the clutter of all the popular books out there that use sensationalism to make sales. There are no witches, no monsters, no weird animals and no ill-behaved children -- and I'm thankful for it! It teaches some good solid values, without being corny or too old-fashioned. It makes me think of all the classics and how they have lasted through the ages. In those everlasting books, there is often something magical that makes wishes come true (i.e. Dorothy's ruby slippers, the Beast's rose, etc.) In this book, it's a simple hand-me-down dress (one many spolied children today would turn their noses up at), that brings so much fun and adventure into Drew and Ellie's lives. They learn the importance of working together to solve problems, having faith in their abilities to succeed and always looking after each other. They recognize the importance of home and family and all those things we as parents so desperately cling to in today's permissive society. The kids will think it's a whirlwind of a reading ride; and parents can rest assured that the positive messages that are embedded in all the fun will resonate with children of all ages. The moral of this review: Buy the book! And don't miss all the adventures that have been promised to follow. This is one series that I hope lasts for a good long time.
