The fact that everyone uses the web in some way or another, this is a good book to have. I am a computer junkie and this book definitely kept my head afloat. But I highly recommend you read "A Branded World" by Michael Levine. This author really knows what he's talking about. The next time a company hands out memos to its employees, make sure "A Branded World" is on the top of the page!

The Internet offers a lot of "get rich quick" schemes, and advice based on 20th-century advertising techniques. However, what worked in the past century and before the Internet, is not working now. From "Cluetrain" to "Gonzo Marketing," there's ample proof of that.

But, if you're self-employed and/or building your online identity... how do you start? And, if you've been online for awhile but you're somehow missing the boat--or at least your audience--what do you do without a corporate advertising budget and webmaster/advisors to help you?

The answer is simple: You get this book. And read it. I've read Chapter Two at least ten times, and I'm still making notes about what I'm changing on my own website (online since 1995, and boy-oh-boy have I made mistakes! *sigh*).

Baker's books are not for wimps. And, they're not the sitcom version of business, where you spend a few days creating a by-the-numbers clone of others' websites, and then sit back expecting income to flood in like clockwork.

Instead of being a book that you read, say, "Oh, that made some good points," and then put on a shelf to collect dust, this is a book that you'll read, re-read, and keep close to hand. Baker's book is information-packed. There is no way that you'll learn it all in one reading, or even two.

This is easily in the top five books that everyone who is (or wants to be) in business online MUST own. Sure, you can read the sample chapters at Baker's website, or take this book out of the library, but it contains too much important advice for that. And, you'll refer to it often, as well.

Buy this book. Roll up your sleeves and do what he says. It's how to succeed on- and offline, in the 21st century. It's not your parents' business era anymore. Learn the new rules in this book, and give yourself a genuine chance for success.

Baker's information would be cheap at ten times the price; it's already helped me to increase the daily hits at one of my websites from 500/day to over 800/day. And, I'm still on Chapter Three!

Bob has an abundance of ideas to get you started and to keep you going as you explore the ways to market yourself online. Bob has a very witty and humorous way to keep you interested in what he has to say. I think Mr. Baker is on the cutting edge of where the future of online marketing is headed. I highly recommend this book.

Pink really lays down the bones of the christian faith in a way that will make you search your soul. Through the prayerful reading of this book you will have to chose to either put it down or conform your life as the Holy Spirit will convict. I have grown tremendously both spiritually and practically through the reading of this book.

How to rightly apply the truths of Scripture in our lives is the essence of practical christianity. Pink gives us a Biblical perspective on how to view Christian doctrine on p.135,"There is no doctrine revealed in Scripture for a merely speculative knowledge, but all is to exert a powerful influence upon conduct. God's design in all that he has revealed to us is to the purefying of our affections and the transforming of our characters." The Christian ought always to have this in view, that my desire to know more of God's truth is that by His grace I may walk in the light of it. Some of the most helpful things Mr.Pink has written on experimental christianity are found in this book. The keeping of the heart is rightly set forth as the great concern that it ought to be in the life of every believer. Pink gives some very helpful definitions as to what the keeping of the heart is. For example on p.100 "To keep the heart means striving to shut out from it all that is opposed to God...God is a jealous God and will brook no rival; He claims the throne of our hearts, and requires to be loved by us supremely." This book will be of immense help to anyone who would like to know how they may so live,as to increasingly honour God in their daily lives.

GOD measured much light to A. W. Pink. Chapter 13 of this book is the substance pointed to by the previous 12 chapters. In it, Pink compares and contrasts GOD's decretive and preceptive wills, His foreordination and providences, and the relationship between these concepts and His sovereign decrees and His Divine governmental ways over His creation. He makes a strong case throughout both administrations of the covenant of grace for the providences of GOD being regulated by the righteous conduct, or lack thereof, of His peculiar people (not towards merit but to the reception of blessing or chastisement). It is a masterpiece on the doctrine of the obedience of faith. Increasing in holy conduct is not an option for the people called by His Name, and Pink drives this concept home.

Arthur W. Pink's unique ability to bring God's Word to practical application for the Christian believer is best described in one word, "conviction." Practical Christianity starts with the process of salvation and walks you through how to live a God pleasing life. Pink's Calvinistic theology will drive you to your knees in prayer and repentance and then show you the blessings God has for you in this life and the next. This is a must read for every Christian.

Practical Says it All

I used (an earlier edition of) this book in an English composition class at the University of Kansas in the late 70's and have kept it with me ever since.

This book has so much to recommend it, it's hard to pick out one thing to emphasize, but the best advise I came away from the book with was Baker's admonition to give your writing the "Argumentative Edge." Like so many students, I found writing exceedingly painful: to sit down with a blank sheet of paper and begin writing inspired me not at all. I thought that I had to sound like Encyclopedia Britannica to write well.

Sheridan Baker slaps you around good to get that notion out of your head. To make your writing interesting (and as a bonus easier), he insists that your writing take a position, express an opinion, argue a point of view. Ditch "fairness" and objectivity--at least to get you started--and all of a sudden, writing becomes pleasurable.

I've never read this advice anywhere else (not even in Stunk and White), and it, along with many other jewels of wisdom have stuck with me for 20 years, making my writing life so much more fun than it otherwise would have been.

Goog work, Sheridan.

This is an excellent volume for teaching quality literary
criticism to collegiate-level students. In primary and
secondary school, the emphasis is on sentence construct.
i.e. A good sentence must have a subject, verb and object.
Although students may learn the mechanics of writing,
they do not pick up fine nuances in literary expression.
This work forces the student to develop a basic idea or theme.
Once developed the point of view must be defended persuasively.
The thesis of the work is contained somewhere in the first
paragraph. Sentences should be simple and stated actively.
Finally, each work should be developed in successive drafts
from the first to the final draft. I've found that students
have a problem differentiating literary criticism from a
simple regurgitation of what they read. The Practical Stylist
helps to focus each student's attention on enunciating
criticism of a person nature or within the experiential
domain of a first hand knowledge. It's painful to learn to
develop quality literary criticism because the primary and
secondary education simply does not focus on this aspect
in any meaningful depth.

I first used this book in 1967 when I was aboard ship taking a course in Expository English offered by The Harvard-M.I.T. Commission on Extension Courses. It has everything one needs to know to become a clear, concise writer. Easy to understand and enjoyable. I used it for many years, then it was stolen. I have been looking for another copy ever since and was afraid it was out of print. I'm about to order my second copy.

Too late for the 1979 Book of Common Prayer

This is truly a work in the tradition of the Great Bible of 1549 and the King James Version. It's unfortunate that the British monarch no longer gives royal authorization to Bible translations, because the REB is much more suitable for church use than the NRSV and whatever translation was chosen for the 1979 Book of Common Prayer Psalter. The Psalms match the dignity and poetry of the Coverdale Psalms that were abandoned in the BCP after 400 years. Truly a translation for the ages.

Beautiful translation

I agree with most of the reviews below: This is a majestic, beautifully worded translation of the Bible. I have been using it extensively for devotional reading or as a secondary bible. It does tend to paraphrase a bit from time to time. This translation is new and different, yet does not change the meaning of the scriptures, just words them differently from those in the KJV/RSV tradition. It is more elegant and dignified in language than the NIV but roughly the same as far as literalness as a translation goes. (Neither excessively literal or overly dynamic)

One reviewer below commented about how the "woman taken in adultry" part in the book of John is regulated to the end of the book. This was done for "textual criticism" reasons, which I don't agree with, but the missing segment is eventually included and not completely deleted. I would rather it be left as it has originally been. Other than that, I really like this translation.

REB: A Good Modern Bible

The Revised English Bible is a 1989 revision of the big selling New English Bible. Whereas the New English Bible kept some archaic language, the REB revision is entirely in modern language. The REB is generally reliable too, the only whiff of religious bias coming in the translators' decision to drop the name "Jehovah" from the handful of places the NEB uses it in Exodus. It is also a shame that the fine illustrations some editions of the NEB used have not been carried over to the REB. The quality of the printed product is excellent though.

Excellent translation that needs more publicity!

I love the REB translation as an alternate to the very popular NRSV. Faithful with a rendering of English that makes one see things differently, this translation is not as appreciated and widly known as it deserves to be!

REB: Accuracy and beauty combined.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-27
There is little I can add to the other comments here, but as someone who works in Christian education, and daily with the Greek and Hebrew texts, I can affirm unhesitatingly that the REB is an incredibly good translation. It is not as literal as the NRSV--there is some paraphrase. Yet it is as accurate. The NRSV is the best translation and the one accepted by scholars, but the REB is easier to read. And this ease does not sacrifice anything, save what can be a sometimes wooden translation on the NRSV's part. Readable accuracy: this is the REB.

Another point of excellence for this Bible is its sheer beauty. There is no other Bible I love to read or listen to more than this one. It is quite musical, yet it is neither wordy nor choppy. The sentences are to the point, yet one feels one is reading a truly modern King James Version. The language sounds lofty, but not over one's head. I have recommended it to scholars and laypersons alike. Poets could make good use of it.

The REB is a Bible that is accurate, readable, and beautiful. If one is looking for one Bible to read alongside the NRSV, or even on its own, this is the Bible to own when one wants a combination of accuracy and beauty. It is a shame that this British translation it is not to well known in America.

Review Date: 2006-06-13
As a pastor who is studying and preaching from the Greek text through Revelation, and who audited Beale at Wheaton on Revelation, I find that this commentary is used on every sermon.
It's a first rate commentary with opinions that true scholars and regular pastors learn to respect even if they do not agree with him on every point. Sometimes when reading Beale there are so many references to apocalyptic literature and other sources that one can get overwhelmed. Osborne doesn't give as many references, but the other reviewer is correct...he's easier to read than Beale or Aune. I have several hundred dollars of the best commentaries I could find on Revelation. This one is one of the few that almost always makes it in my book bag (and it's pretty thick). I am unwilling to go without it when I have the potential of preparing a sermon at home rather than my office.

He sets apart special comments and exegetical points in shaded frames for quick reference. One time when we were discussing a particularly detailed and crucial point in class Dr. Beale excitedly said, I've got to call Osborne about this....which shows that if one of the top scholars in the world on Revelation is excited about calling Osborne...he must be great. And as I've used him, I agree. His stuff is great.

When they diverge, I usually go with Beale, but Osborne makes one think carefully and helps you work through issues in a different way than Beale does. The big differences are that Osborne has smooth reading, fewer references to research on most points, but about as much material in general as Beale.

Any pastor who is preaching from Revelation should refer to Osborne as well as Beale for indepth background on almost every nuance of the text one can imagine. So although I cannot say I agree with every single point in this book...it's easily a five star commentary that you need in your library and open on your desk as you research the textual issues and depths of this incredible grand finale of the bible...the book of Revelation.

Excellent for students and teachers

More accessible for the student than Beale, he is very readable and lucid and the layout is clear. He compares the views of different commentators (useful because he includes Beale and Aune). He deals with most options on difficult passages before coming to his own conclusion. Despite its size he is not over detailed. His interpretation is eclectic, i.e. he combines preterist, idealist and futurist, with the futurist being primary rather than idealist. Premill on chap 20. Uses his own translation of the Greek, which is better than the NIV. He is very useful on the Greek and Greek text is transliterated. Footnotes are kept to a minimum and textual variants are left to the end of each section. There is a good bibliography and four indexes. The introduction is short (49 p) but adequate for the student. Comments on a paragraph at a time, individual verses are not indicated, which is a pity. He is a little weak on numerology and sometimes fails to see or mention contrasts such as the new Jerusalem the Bride and Babylon the whore. Overall however, a very useful commentary, which I highly recommend for students, teachers and preachers. I found him hard to put down, he reads so well. He bodes well to become the standard evangelical commentary for students.

The best balance commentary on the Revelation

Review Date: 2006-08-21
As a Bible teacher I have read many commentaries on the Revelation. I have taught every verse of the Revelation 3 times and have a different view than the one Osborne has. But in saying that I find this particular commentary the best balanced and clearest thinking of any I have read. It is not a technical commentary but I find it as useful as those that major in handling the original language. So read commentaries that agree with whatever view of interpretation you hold to - then sit back and really enjoy and be challenged by this clear writing scholar.

No, this is not a story about Princess Emeralda and Prince Eadric.

This new story, which is a prequel to THE TALES OF THE FROG PRINCESS, visits Princess Emeralda's aunt....as a teenager!

Living in Greater Greensward with her mother, father, and sister, Chartreuse, Grassina is not expected to do much. Chartreuse was first born, which means she will be both Queen and Green Witch. All Grassina is expected to do is to marry a prince.

When the King gives their mother a bouquet of flowers the family curse turns her into a nasty hag and also disperses of her Green Witch title. Now Greater Greensward has no Green Witch to protect them.

While doing a meaningless task for her mother, Grassina hears word of werewolves invading towns and nearing Greater Greensward. With no Green Witch, who will stop them? Its up to magic-less Grassina, runaway Haywood, and a snake named Pippa to save the kingdom.

As a fan of THE TALES OF THE FROG PRINCESS, i thought this was a good prequel. The book reads smoothly and gives Grassina more personality than that which we already knew. If you read the books released before THE SALAMANDER SPELL you know the outcome, but nevertheless it's a good read.

Eleven-year-old Randy Wilcox and his friends, Stewart, Jeff, and Hal, think that life in New Market, Virginia, is boring. They are hoping that their little town is more exciting than they think it is, so they buy a police scanner. Besides, they want to own their own detective agency someday, so knowing police codes could come in handy.

While the boys are getting ready for the camping trip, news comes across the scanner of a bank robbery. The boys decide to continue with their plans for the weekend and continue packing--after all, the bank robbers will be long gone and their trip will be completely uneventful--or will it?

This is an exciting read guaranteed to keep the reluctant readers attention. I didn't find anything I disliked about Secret of Abbott's Cave. My son is anxious to get his hand on the book and read it for himself. The Police Codes are at the back of the book. Which my husband that was cool, since he works for our local Police Dept.

They decide to get a police scanner radio so that when crime happens, they can be at the crime scene. When they go to Sunday school one day, they get a new teacher and have a lesson that will affect their future adventures. The teacher talks about how Jesus made a blind man see, and they did an activity where the Sunday school class was in total darkness and some of them had to go through a blind "obstacle course".

Randy and his friends like cave exploring although they haven't explored any caves yet. They take a class on safety and what to bring in caves. Later on, Randy and his friends go to explore a cave on Jeff Steven's uncle's property. When they get picked up they hear the police scanner talking about a bank robbery and two suspects that were on the run. When the friends reach their destination, the set up camp near the cave and in the morning, they see the two bank robbers go towards the direction of the cave. In the morning the friends go in the cave and find the money and later the robbers come and follow the kids deep in the seemingly endless cave. Through great leadership and trust, Randy and his friends make it out the cave safely and end up getting the robbers arrested. Randy and his friends come out as town heroes.

The author really made this book easy on the eyes because it didn't have many "big" words. Also, the author wrote in such a way that I could picture exactly what was going on, such as when Stewart was looking down into a hole in the cave and dropped his helmet. I could hear the flashlight coming apart from the helmet and breaking into the wall.

I like this book because it was easy to read, yet it had me sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen to the kids in the next sentence! This book is great if you want a quick read and like adventure books. Also, this book is intended for the younger ages, but in my opinion anyone of any age could enjoy this delightful book. And it comes with an extra feature at the end, a list of Hampton, Virginia's 10-codes and fire signals! I recommend that anyone who is at least a little interested should buy this book.

Many times in marriage, ministry and with relationships in general, "things can go south for unexpected reasons" and the more one does to correct the problem seems to only make it worse. There could be a relational transference occuring. This book does a great job in identifying such and provides steps to take for healthy resolution.

McIntyre's book is an absolute MUST read for the lay or professional pastoral worker/counselor. Her insights regarding the dynamic of transference are penetrating and relevant to a proper understanding of the subject. Whether you are being transferred onto, or have engaged in this behavior yourself, McIntyre's book illimunates the subject in such a way as to enlighten the reader to the harmful effects of pressing transferences, the appropriate measures and precautions to take when we're the object of transference, as well as what to do if we're the one in transference. A much needed and useful tool in spiritual and emotional warfare.

The book i personally found very helpful in my own family setting as it looks on why people transfer their emotions onto others. It deals wisely with the need to find wholeness in our relationship with God - to open the memories which when repressed can lead us to transfer onto others. For the one transfered upon the importance of holding onto the truth and not wallowing in a reactive and subjective attitude is made clear. The book has helped me feel less alone and fearful in response to others' transferance and also my own unhealedness. I recommend the book as a 'restoring' book to those 'subject' to their own unresolved needs and those of others.

McIntyre's book is an incredible testimony of personal experience in emotional enmeshment and the underlying spiritual and psychological issues that accompany it. It is also an incredible explication of how this common emotional condition is connected to christian concepts of idolatry. For those who have been caught up in the emotional turmoil and conflict that is common in these kinds of experiences, especially when they come out in a church, counseling or ministry context as well as interpersonal relationships, this book can bring insight and clarity to the spiritual and emotional underpinnings of this common condition. Contrary to some interpretations, this book does not label "transference" as "sin", but rather points out from a testimonial and pastoral perspective how the dynamics of transference play an integral part in emotional enmeshment, emotional dependence and emotional idolatry in present relationships. It also covers well how to deal with it outside the therapy office in the contexts in which it can occurr. It is not a substitute for more in-depth psychological understanding of the concepts presented, or for therapy where it is needed. It is a great book for gaining insight and initial understanding on a pastoral level about issues that are tumultuous and confusing in nature.

The Spirit Garden has taken it's place on my book shelf of "favorites only." This is the shelf I return to when I want to re-read a book that touched me profoundly in its first reading. David is the real deal and a gift to anyone who shares any time with him whether through his written work or through a personal reading or conversation. His obvious gentle and loving demeanor provides a safe space for your personal growth, communication with the other side, healing and the connection with your divine guidance.

What a blessing to be able to read a candid account of someone who is walking the walk---owning his gifts and using them in service of a healthy, happy, high vibration world. Reading about David's journey from his childhood to today not only will wake you up to your abilities and gifts but give you courage to own them and use them too. I highly suggest going to his website for additional information about his medium and psychic readings, photos and spiritual concepts (such as chakras). This man is more than an author, medium and psychic but a teacher as well.

It is more important for me, as I progress on my own spiritual journey, to learn about not only the amazing things that intuitive (mediums)people can do-but the not as amazing experiences as well. If one is psychic (we all are to a degree), then one is all day every day! What is life like for a medium, day in and day out? How did he (or she) discover that he was actually-psychic? As a child? In adulthood? I enjoyed reading and learning about the life of a medium reading Mr. Baker's book and it is obvious by his story that he 'walks his talk', and he has experienced life in all its fullness; the ups and downs. I find I learn more by hearing the whole story, and David Baker put his heart along with his wisdom in this book. He includes lots of info in the back which is very helpful for further reading, etc.

David Baker's journey has been one of amazing interactions with the spirit world. If you've ever had a psychic experience or a brush with the 'other side' this work will inform, educate, validate, as well as entertain you. And if you haven't encountered spirit yet, but simply want to learn more, you'll be taken by the hand and guided in between the human and the spirit world in this wonderful book that reads like a fiction novel but is much better because it is all true. Simply reading this book will help you understand the journey of awakening that occurs as one learns to trust their intuitions and experiences. You will be inspired to develop your own gifts and talents and share them with the world for the betterment of your own life and the lives of others. Thank you David for the courage to share your journey with the world.

Great book, easy to read. The author describes transitions in his life, growing up with psychic abilities and how he uses this gift to help others. In his book David Baker defines what psychic gifts are so that the reader may understand and follow the story of his personal journey becoming a medium. I highly recommend this book. Reading this book may help one to discover what their own psychic gifts are.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down. It is smooth sailing and I wanted more at the end. This book is dynamic and filled with true life experiences. Even though, as a child, David did not understand what these gifts were, he was aware of certain feelings and visions of angels and ghosts. It was as he grew older and was on his own that he truely began his journey to discover what these experiences meant. David openly discusses his childhood and life. He reflects back to realize he always had these abilities. On his journey of self discovery he describes incidents that clearly demonstrate how these gifts evolved. Throughout his life David found himself in desperate situations and turned to God and the Divine support staff of angels, ascended masters, and spirit guides. They always came through for David and his gratitude is expressed in various ways throughout the book. David goes to rock bottom and makes it back again in this touching and inspiring true story to become a very gifted spirit messenger with an increasing following as he brings messages of love, healing and forgivness from spirits of deceased loved ones.
