Bold statements are made in these essays - essentially changing the way man thought about his universe. A great study in scientific thought and materialism.

Francis Bacon was an observant and insightful student of human society and human nature, as reflected in most of the essays here. The perspective *is* a bit bourgeois, but I guess Bacon can't help having been a nobleman. A lot of the later essays in the book seem to be along the lines of "how to put people to good use." Included also in this volume is a quite detailed biographical sketch at the beginning, and some extra material with aphoristic sketch-like versions of a few of the essays, plus the "Antitheses of Things," which is quite interesting.

The language is essentially Shakespearean, which I always enjoy reading, as it gives one the sense of watching as phrases and words are coined before your eyes (Shakespeare coined INNUMERABLE words and phrases in his works, and Bacon does a few here too, actually, according to the Explanatory Notes); a refreshing change from modern language, where we basically speak in cliches. The problem is, this edition (Oxford's World's Classics) has SO MANY "translational" footnotes explaining his 17th-century word usage, that it's quite distracting and unnecessary. One has to learn to basically ignore them most of the time. The Explanatory Notes collected at the end are quite indispensable for dealing with Bacon's penchant for endless streams of Latin quotes and likely-obscure-to-the-modern-reader classical references, but the footnotes are just ridiculous. I'd guess one could reasonably assume that anyone who'd pick up this book in the first place would not need to be told that "contrariwise" means "on the contrary," "mark" means "observe," "magnanimity" means "noble, generous feelings," "overlaid" means "burdened"... I could go on and on. I don't know if other editions have as thorough Explanatory Notes as this, though; if they do I'd go with that over this edition.

As a pyschology student I bought this book in college because it was my intro to psychology class' textbook. How would I know that it would be so easy to follow? It really helped me out when I had to sit up late at night and review for the finals. What else can I say about it, besides it is a great book for anyone who wants to becomes more knowledgeable in the general field of psychology.

I had to use this book for my intro to psychology class. I planned on just skimming it to find the answeres, but I ended up reading it all. It is a great book with great stories. It is easy of follow and the definition of new words are listed on the side of the page, not in the back of the book like most textbooks. Great Book!

The book does provide a diverse range of genre. It works well as a literature textbook. However, the quality of the book binding is poor. Students purchase this $50+ textbook only to have chunks of it fall out before the end of the semester. I suppose the publisher sells more textbooks that way, since few books are resold as used books, but I can't recommend it for just that reason.

An excellent textbook for first-year college students.

This book provides a good range of diverse materials for a teacher in a first year English course. There are multiple genres and themes, a section of famous paintings for discussions (useful for discussions on literature and art), among other helpful features. The Conscious Reader is an antidote to readers which have the same standard writing for student use.

This very good book presents school safety concerns from three perspectives: (1) the high salience of current safety issues; (2) in-depth discussion of seven standards for school safety; and (3) questions that parents, teachers, and safety experts ask about school safety. He concludes with an appendix which gives the list of seven school safety standards and specific recommendations for each.

I thought this writer was clear, dispassionate, very informative, and useful. He does not have a "theory of discipline," but instead incorporates the best of both reflective and "conservative" disciplinary procedures. He is keen on building student self-discipline and safety through appropriate use of information (rules themselves), consequences (logical), resolution, and restitution; but he does not shy away from considering alternative programs. He was very informative about safety for Special Education youngsters.

Most readers for this book will be professional educators in training. It is more helpful for curriculum specialists and administrators than for teachers, but the integration of classroom rules to school-wide rules receives serious consideration.

Working for an organization dedicated to reducing violence in schools, I've had the opportunity to read many books in the past three years on this topic. Creating Safe Schools for All Children is the single best resource I've found, to date. The material was presented in a systematic way with key points for each chapter, call out boxes for case studies and recommendations, and a thorough presentation of some of the most important points of current research. I'd recommend every principal and school board member put this book at the top of their reading list.

An excellent Criminology textbook with a global perspective
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-18
'Criminology - A Global Perspective' delivers exactly what its title promises. Although it is written and published in the United States, the authors recognise that crime is not confined to the USA and they provide a wealth of data drawn from Europe and, where it is available, from elsewhere in the world. Most unusually, for an entry-level text, the book and its data are fully referenced. This is cleverly achieved though the use of a website ([...]) which is said to be updated as any errors are discovered. The tables are well presented and the text is leavened, but not overburdened, with relevant illustrations. The book is compact in size, well laid out and comprehensively indexed. Although it was published in 2000, it does not appear dated. However, five years is a long time in the life of a textbook, so maybe a new edition is due. Provided the mixture remains the same, that book should be good for at least the next five years.

Informative and Comprehensive Book for Criminology

Review Date: 2000-09-06
Lee Ellis and Anthony Walsh have accomplished what no one else in the field of criminology have done -- they have written an informative and comprehensive text that has global appeal. Most texts in this field are discipline-specific and do not include a thorough review of various other perspectives. In fact, many books that attempt to cover materials that are not in the authors disciplines often include inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading information. This book is not biased in its approach and integrates various behavioral sciences in an attempt to present a broad range of theories, findings, methods and interpretations. As a result, the reader can come to his or her own conclusions which are well informed and critical. In addition, the authors provide a wealth of resources in the form of tables, figures and references from a vast literature for the student or scholar to further investigate various substantive areas that are covered. In sum, the depth with which criminological topics are addressed is impressive, and should prove to be an invaluable resource for all interested in this field.

Book Review: Curriculum: Foundations, Principles, and Issues by Ornstein and Hunkins

This book discusses various curriculum approaches and is an excellent source of information about philosophical, historical, psychological, and social foundations of curriculum. It discusses curriculum theory, curriculum development and curriculum designs. This book explains the taxonomic levels and approaches to educational objectives. It identifies curriculum implementation models and numerous curriculum evaluation models. It ends with a discussion of curriculum issues, trends and future directions. This book is an excellent source of theory related to curriculum and should be helpful to faculty and students studying curriculum and to anyone involved in developing curriculum.

This is a very comprehensive book, and for the most part, very evenly written. Information about the history of curriculum is excellent, well organized and in great detail. Information about the processes of curriculum writing is outstanding - extremely thorough, complete and exhaustive in scope - and quite valuable as a reference. The last section of the book covers what directions new curricula might move, with information about what has changed, and predictions about what will change. Here the high quality of the writing and information evaporates, revealing quite inappropriate bias, slipshod research, vague or incorrect information, and gaps in continuity. I got more reliable, unbiased and accurate information on the last topics from a much older (different) source book.
I used the bulk of this book as a valuable source and reference in classwork and curriculum writing, but the latter part is inappropriate and unreliable for that.

Small is Large for Bacon

Review Date: 2008-07-03
This paperback book on the great British painter Francis Bacon is invaluable. Though small in size, there is a wealth of materials presented - portions of the many interesting interviews conducted with him over the years, a great amount of documentary photographs of Bacon, his works, his studio and his friends, including many color reproductions of his paintings. Also helpful to the reader is that the sizes of the paintings are given in both inches and cm, and that even the locations of the paintings in museums and private collections today are given.
I though I knew much about Francis Bacon, but the information on his working methods was new to me. Even his use of corduroy cloth to make certain effects on the surfaces of his paintings. I ended up buying three copies of this book. One for me and two for my artist friends.

Compact but concise
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-28
Christophe Domino has managed to distill a body of work into a near pocket-sized edition, but with amamzing accuracy and attention to detail. As an admirer of Bacon's work and ideas, it is obvious that a book like this would not have been possible without the seminal work of writers David Sylvester and Michael Peppiatt respectively, but it is very well done none the less. From background information on the artist to one of the most suprising collection of photographic references available to date, the author does an outstanding job of doing with this book what most books twice this size struggle with. This book is highly recommended for anyone who is curious about the work of Francis Bacon, or simply as an amazing and concise review of facts for those who are already aware of the genius of the "greatest living (now deceased) painter".

Beautifully produced, very accessible portrait of the artist

Review Date: 2000-08-30
This is a beautifully produced little book, full of excellent reproductions and elaborate pull-outs of Bacon's triptychs which give greater scope for appreciation than more conventional formats allow. Domino's text initially seems more simplistic than simple, discussing the artist's life, work, methods and themes very accessibly and predictably, but you end up with a clear sense of the art and its mechanics which might have been obscured in more technical books. It is as frustratingly ahistorical as Bacon's paintings though, and this book (as well as a recent visit to teh Dublin retrospective) tends to confirm my suspicions that Bacon was not as great as we all once thought. The book appends a section called 'Documents', full of reminiscences from acquaintances, and analyses by the likes of Gilles Deleuze.

Excellent description of the purpose and procedures of basic statistical techniques. Uses simplified formulas, and does not get lost in the math. Easy to read and understand. Good for social science and public policy courses, including public administration. Only drawback: does not effectively incorporate computer applications.

Review Date: 2000-04-20
One of the best statistics books I can think of for social scientists who are not well aquainted with statistical procedures. The book is structured in several chapters, each concentrating on one statistical problem. In the first part of each chapter the theoretical background is given, followed by examples. Then, other examples are given, so that it becomes easily understandable how to correctly use the formulas respectively when they can't be used. Finally, there is a part of exercises where the reader may apply his new knowledge, before proceeding to the next chapter. However, it is just an introduction, not dealing with more complex statistical problems. Very recommendable for anyone who needs a solid basic knowledge in statistic or who wants how to start processing existing data.
