Refreshing new approach

This book is simply that.... refreshing. The approach of assigning credit to the African 25th Egyptian Dynasty of Kush is really well explained. And also, traditional ideas about "Divine intervention" or "rats who ate the bowstrings of the Assyrians" are dismissed with good enough explanations.

I'm Convinced!

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. Before I read Aubin's book, I went out to either purchase or research about 10 books (excluding the versions of the 4 bibles I read ) that covered the subect matter. His explanation is the only plausible explanation I've read to-date. What a great mystery that was well argued and the wonderful detail that he presented was excellent. I read the whole book in about 2 days as if it was a mystery novel. It is great to know a that "white person -a father" wrote this book because it strengthen my faith in mankind, regardless of race. History should be about facts and not racial agendas, black or white.

I also happened to luck-up on a copy of James Henry Breasted "A History of Egypt", one of the writers mentioned in "The Rescue of Jerusalem". What a racist this guy was, who at the time was consisdered the premire expert in Egyptolgy. I'm glad I read Breasted's book myself to verify the accuracy of Aubin's quotations. Boy, he was right on the button concerning Breasted comments as well as the other theories that really doesn't add up.

I also read "What If" by William H. McNeill, who stated that the retreat of the Assyrian army was one of the greatest turning point in Western and therefore the world's history. Unfortuntely he believed in the "plagues theory". However, A 2nd review of the Aubin's book back cover now lists this author as a convert.

From my research into the biblical story of Jewish deliverance, The rescue of Jerusalem is the best source I could find, with clear and untterly convincing points.

Henry Aubin examines this biblical story with the uttermost scrutiny from most, if not all, the modern available evidence.

One of the ten most interesting books I have every read

Henry Aubin with Rescue of Jerusalem, has opened a whole new way for me to look at history and religion. Henry is a Canadian Prize winning journalist and his perspective compared to certified historians makes the writing much easier to digest. His sense of drama lifts this detailed and accurate history to an art form. Don't be afraid of the footnotes. They are there for "doubting Tomases" and in no way detract from an exciting read. Congratulations Henry, I can't wait for another one. Lets hear more about these forgotten but vital parts of history.

Ahh...Paul is the master of big thinking. I am by myself with a draftsman, using email. I only used 5% of the stuff, however it was great. The BEAST ADT shines, this is the Rolls polish, someday (when I die) I will put it all in place. :)

this is one case where "It was worth the wait!" Until now the only source i trusted for getting answers for how to deploy ADT3_3 was the Autodesk Newsgroups. What Paul has done here to collect his vast experience and knowledge of the product into a complete thought and then run it through the Autodesk gamut of approval is nothing short of tremendous.

Look -- let's admit it, ADT is a small BEAST. It can take months to implement some of these concepts fully into your firm. And if you think you will come to all the same conclusions Paul does on your own your crazy. I refer back to my brother who is in the music business "You have to know the rules before you can break them!" Paul knows the rules.

for lack of space i will comment only on content here . . .

i dove in this past weekend. i scanned 8 of the 13 chapters. (chapter 13 is available on the web site only). you don't have to read the book in order but i suspect to use it is as a guide you would need to follow it in order. So far i have found many good suggestions. and a few healthy disagreements too. it is really good reading!!! the same nice balance of technical assumptions and laymans terms that we have come to expect from Paul.

i foresee it becoming the guidebook for implementation as Autodesk Press intended for many offices. and for others such as mine it is an excellant balance and check to review current implementation. I also look forward to editing some of the included cd-rom content for documenting my own implementation, something i never seem to get to.

here's a couple specifics:

Pro's
page 41:
I agree with "include an OBJRELUPDATE/all statement in your Acad.lsp file."
Realizing that regenall does not regen adt objects was very helpful.

too many more to list.

Con's
page 47:
I don't agree with "Optimize for Speed check box in the Object Snap area . . . it is recommended that you not activate this feature"
I find little use for the extra snapping on the effected objects, and in a production environment; file sizes are large enough that performance would surely be sacrificed.

enjoy. cheers,

matthew

A Fuller Picture

This book should be used in conjunction with the Mastering Autodesk ADT 2007 or Mastering Architecture 2008 books. This is more for the person that sets the standards. If you are like me, a pretty much one man team, then this makes your understanding of ADT a lot more comprehensive. It explains a lot more of the "why" than the "Mastering books" did. My picture of the project got a lot bigger frame as I was going thru this book. It is written in such a way that you can go from the beginning to the end, as usual. But, it is also written so that you can go & look up certain areas that you have questions about, go to that part of the book & get your answer without a loss of understanding because you took it out of sequence.

I would recommend this book to any user of ADT or Architecture from intermediate & up. I also would recommend it to any CAD managers or those that want to be CAD managers. If you want to get the most complete education of ADT or Architecture you can have, get both books, the one for this review and either Mastering AutoCAD Architecture 2008 or Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007, depending on which program you have. I would also recommend getting The Illustrated AutoCAD 2008 Quick Reference (Illustrated AutoCAD Quick Reference) or the year that matches the year of your program. It doesn't contain the ADT or Architecture commands but does a great job on the AutoCAD commnads & system variables.

This is an excellent companion to Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007 and in many cases picks up where MADD leaves off. If you are using MADD to get up & going with ADT and find yourelf thumbing the index thinking "There's got to be more detail", it is here. Detailed information and sound advice for figuring out and making sense of the whole Projects, Display, Styles and Objects systems is here.
We are a 2 seat high end residential firm. I have been using ACAD since R9 and ArchT as an architectural front end for 10 years. ADT2007 is my first go at ADT. It is definitely complex & multi-layered, but I believe that it will improve the quality & timeliness of our production. This book is an integral part of the process. It's worth it.

Mastering a Tough Subject

Review Date: 2004-11-24
I almost didn't buy this book as I have had previous experience in both Viz and Architectural Desktop; but, the price was right and I figured what the heck, it'll give me something to do over the holidays.

I'm very glad that I made the plunge because this book made me realize how little I did know about a very tough subject, optimizing the ADT building model in order to produce very realistic renderings with reasonable file sizes and render times. In fact, the two chapters on models is a "must read" for anyone who wants to be able to render ADT models in either Viz or VizRender.

Since both authors are architects, this book centers on producing outstanding presentations using VizRender. Their lighting techniques (both interior and exterior) and their recommendations for tweaking materials and render settings provide a clear path towards that end. It would be difficult to read this book and not become an accomplished renderer. In addition to the easy to understand text, there are lots graphics and a whole section of colored plates that illustrate the desired rendering results for each chapter. Finally, there are plenty of bonus excercises and excerpts to expand and sharpen the newly learned skills.

This book is definitely a must for anyone who wants to be proficient in using VizRender with ADT and several copies should be on the library shelves of any firm or school using or teaching those products.

I took a autocad class in college and this was not part of the program. I recently purchased the entire program for myself and wanted to learn this aspect of it. This was a great help, I found it easy to learn and a great reference tool until I got the hang of the program. Highly Recommended!

It should be compulsory to read this book. The author is fascinating and her life extraordinary. It makes me want to do greater things with my life, to live my life more interestingly, and lets me escape the doldrums of the everyday.
I thorougly recommend this book.
My first encounter with Ms St Aubin de Teran was with "The Hacienda", which is read at least three times a year.
If you shelter a sensitive, adventurous spirit, READ THIS BOOK.

i stumbled on to Lisa St.Aubin De Teran's book, valley in italy in a used book store and have read everything i can get my hands on since. Memory Maps is by far the best memoir of hers, it is well thought out and concise. Memory maps gave me insight into why she became a wrtiter and why she is so passionate about travel. I loved visiting so many remote places, I found myself jealous over and over again as i sat reading on my lunch break with a nine to five job! It must be amazing to take off for a remote island for six months or travel to africa to a place she couldn't even find on her atlas! wow!

Above all, I have found myself completely addicted to her writing style, to her family and their adventures. Each book I have read gives me more and more details that for some reason leave me wanting even more. I would recommend this book as it stands or read it third: Hacienda first, Valley in Italy next and this as the third memoir to complete her story (up to present that is).

I am hoping she will write a fourth memoir, I need to know how Isuelt, Alex, Florence are doing. Certainly she has had more adventures, that is a given.

I had never heard of the author or the book, but bought it as one of three books to sustain me on a two-week trip in Asia. On more than one occasion, I was asked by strangers what I was reading that made me lol. This is, quite simply, one of the best books that I have ever read. There is a sadness over the failures of human nature with a sweetness and lyrical humor. More than once, I thought of Cervantes. Only here, you get Castro and a whole, wide, cast of characters. A classic.

hi:) this is my first time writing a review... and I am so proud that I am writing this review for the book I am translating from English to Turkish:) I can say that this book is fascinating. Teran has made her best efforts for writing this book. Otto is a great character, who has a very very different life than you would imagine... I am laughing and I am crying at some pages... but I am really having fun while reading and translating:) so, what I can say is that you really have to buy and read this book and have a journey throughout in otto's life which passed on the WORLD:)

sensuous prose captures place and passion

Review Date: 1999-08-02
The craze for Italy following in the wake of Frances Mayes brings this exquisite novel to America at last, nearly three years after its UK appearance. Set in mid-nineteenth century Italy,it's the story of a sculptor's love for a woman called Donna Donatella, and the huge and fabulous house he sets out to build for them to share. Donna makes only the briefest of appearances in the story - out of which Gabriele, the sculptor, conjures a passion and an obsession, which manifests itself in the palace. Lisa St Aubin De Teran's magical prose makes this slow, subtle tale genuinely gripping. Her lush and evocative use of words - she is one of the finest stylists in modern English language fiction - is nevertheless very precise. You will picture Venice clearly in your mind through her remarkably fresh descriptions, and see each stone of the house as it evolves. A book to revel in, to take time with, to read and read again. And to lead you to the seven earlier novels of Lisa St Aubin De Teran.

Truly a great story. It started out very dickenish like a tale of two cities and then moved in her own style. Whats even better of her writing is the fact is that both the story and characters give the reading a tremendous boast. So many writers today suck because they are only good at one or the other. Her creativity in her writing is truly unique. Its truly a great moving story but the ending dragged on about the palace a little too long. Even still, I think I want to read more of her work since I am now a fan (which I do not become that often).
