This is an incredible resource for a great price. Instead of going through a variety of books and piecing things together, this pretty much has the total package and it's all in one place! The powerpoints are cool and the book is packed with many usable ideas. It even has artwork, worship suggestions and other cool peripheral ideas. I love how it's so thorough and complete. Both the volunteer youth leaders and the students have enjoyed the material. For everything you get and the price, it is well worth it!

I'd never heard of this woman. I literally picked this book up because I was desperate for something new to read. These letters chronicle her life from the moment she entered Carmel until her death. She is both simpler and more complex than St. Therese of Lisieux, but a woman completely in love with God and completely in TOUCH with love. Outreaching, unafraid to love with seemingly her whole heart. This much love is staggering. I couldn't put the book down, because I had simply never encountered such a creature. Now, I find myself, everyday, remembering one of her phrases. I will have to get the first volumne, now.

After having read extensively the writings of Saint Therese of Lisieux, I sort of expected the writings of Bl. Elizabeth to be very similar, especially since the relationship between the two is really hyped. After reading just a few of Bl. Elizabeth's letters, I was astounded by the originality of Elizabeth's spirituality.Though her spirituality is definitely in keeping with the Teresian and Johannine traditions, it places a new emphasis on the indwelling of the holy trinity in her soul. Her letters from the Carmelite Monastery she entered at age 21 are evangelical in their illustration of her joy, happiness, and love for God. I was moved to read some of her letters near the end of her life, for example the letter where she states she is suffering, "suffering enough to scream!". Her letters are quite different in tone from those of Saint Therese, and for good reason. Saint Therese entered a Carmelite monastery at the age of fifteen, after having lived a rather sheltered, pampered life. Bl. Elizabeth was a gifted pianist, loved parties, social events and beautiful clothes. This book is an invaluable tool in understand Bl Elizabeth and her spirituality. It also contains several wonderful photos, explanations of the customs of Carmel, and biographical notes. This book is highly recommended.

ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS...

Review Date: 2006-06-03
This is a well-written work of historical fiction that focuses on Anne Boleyn. It is her story, told against the backdrop of the turbulent Tudor court. The author paints a portrait of Anne Boleyn with small brush strokes, creating a picture of a fully fleshed, complex woman.
The author first shows Anne as a vulnerable, though elegant young woman, fresh from the French court and now a lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine. She is in the throes of first love with Henry Percy, the son and heir of the Earl of Northumberland. He, too, is smitten, and they plan to marry. Yet, just as she is about to realize her dream, Cardinal Wolsey intervenes, and she and Percy are no longer free to marry. A bitter Anne, misinterpreting why Wolsey acted as he did, vows to make Wolsey pay for her unhappy plight.
It soon becomes clear, however, as to why Wolsey interfered in her personal affairs. It appears that Anne has caught the eye of King Henry VIII, and nothing in England will ever again be the same. With her ambitious family in the wings, Anne leads the King on a merry chase, holding onto her chastity until the very last, while holding out for the Queen's crown.
Anne would wait in the wings all but Queen except in name, as King Henry VIII spent years trying to shed himself of Queen Catherine, his long suffering wife, under the theory that they had never really been married in the eyes of God. After all, Catherine had first been his brother Arthur's wife. This was euphemistically known as the King's private matter, though it seemed all of England knew of it and frowned upon it, due to Queen Catherine's popularity.
Still, the King was determined upon setting his first marriage aside in order to marry Anne. This matter would set the backdrop for the coming Reformation. The rise of Protestantism is evoked through the person of Emma Arnett, Anne's personal maid, making Anne's story more three dimensional, as this sub-plot grounds Anne's story in the historical context of the time.
The reader sees Anne's transition from that of a disillusioned girl into a woman with a great deal of power, who sees her power wane once the King has consummated his love and quenched his desire for her. The reader also sees Henry VIII make a gradual transition from being a king with an occasional roving eye, to besotted suitor, to a tyrannical despot, seeking to beget a legitimate son by whatever means necessary. It also explains why the King at varying times viewed Anne as his beloved, then as his Queen and potential mother of his male heir, and finally as a treasonous harlot.
Anne's story is intelligently told by an master storyteller, well-crafted and compelling. It is a wonderful work of historical fiction that is replete with period detail, political intrigues, and a shimmering panoply of historical events. This is a novel that those who enjoy well-written historical fiction or those who enjoy novels about Anne Boleyn or the Tudor court will love.

One of the very best "Anne Boleyn" novels ever written

To my mind, a really good historical, biographical novel deserves to take its place with serious nonfiction. The best that such a novel can do is to imagine the person as he / she might have been, filling in the lacunae that history leaves us. This can do as much for us in imagining the past as history does.
This novel is told from the point of view of a servant of Anne Boleyn. She accompanies Anne back home from court after her courtship with Henry Percy is abruptly broken off, and remains with her throughout her life. The story is not entirely historically accurate, but I have rarely seen Anne Boleyn so plausibly brought to life. One of the most interesting angles is that Lofts has Anne argue that she has been perfectly virtuous: she never even kissed Henry until he claimed that he wasn't married. Anne's possible reactions to her sister Mary are also very well done.
Well worth reading and pondering for anyone interested in the period.

"Confronting Abuse" is an excellent resource for all manner of abuse, also solutions... the SOLUTION part is the best. Many books reveal types of abuse and how to recognize, but no solutions. This one teaches Godly principles for LDS members and gives excellent guidance in seeking help in resolving issues for the victims as well as the offender. It addresses issues that many of us may not be aware are abusive habits...to habits that are entrenched and need serious therapy and how to get professional help. It is one of the best self-help books I have found on the subject, as well as a resource for professionals. I recommend it to anyone, but especially LDS members who have issues of abuse that need to be confronted.

Locking secrets behind closed doors, many L.D.S. members try to ignore abuse ... they're told to pray harder, talk to their bishop then the situation will change, right? Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Utah has the highest spouse/child abuse in the United States. Why? This book takes a penetrating look at the problem. It's an LDS perspective on understanding and healing. Although I do not agree with many of the solutions, it's a valuable guide for anyone who has been physically, emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually abused. One significant chapter on Elderly abuse was particularly interesting. The Church MUST face the problem squarely and this book suggests answers.

I have read several biographies of Constance Markievicz. This proves to be the most complete as well as the most enjoyable read. Haverty does an admirable job of tracing Constance's life from her sheltered childhood on the Co. Sligo estate of her Anglo-Irish family, to her years in the Arts Salons of Paris, to her conversion to a revolutionary leading the charge of Irish Republicanism and Labour. The imagery and language of this book, will make this a treat for the reader. Quite informative and well researched, I highly recommend this book.

And while getting to know them all, you will learn the tragic tale of his best friends' murder, and the incredible cover-up that was planned to keep the truth from being known about it. This book is an exciting page-turner, much like James Patterson's "Alex Cross" books. It takes lots of twists and turns as we discover what role the handsome young lawyer played in his friend's death about 30 years ago and what lengths the murderer will go to in order to keep him and his newspaper reporter girlfriend quiet. Contempt of Court is a really satisfying book. I couldn't put it down!

This book provides much more detail about how to overcome your depression-reinforcing *behaviors* than David Burns' excellent books do. It's a nice complement to the Feeling Good titles for anybody trying to make cognitive-behavioral therapy work without a therapist. Expertly written by the leading researchers on behavior therapy for depression. Fills in the 'behavior' part of the cognitive-behavior approach!!
With a bit of self-discipline, this program really works!!

I used this book several years ago, maybe three, and it was so helpful. It is much more than a pep-talk, it is a specific how-to manual that gives you concrete ideas about the steps you must take to lift yourself out of your slump/minor depression.
First, you have to get a handle on whether you are depressed (it could be something else making you blue), and how severely you are depressed. The book is designed for people whose depression scores are between 5-15 on the Beck scale (provided). If you are higher than 15, the author recommends that you give the book a try, but keep in mind that you MAY need professional assistance. I was a 23, but this book worked wonders for me, without any assistance.
The book has a behavioral approach to depression. This means that the authors believe your depressive behavior and feelings can be changed by first identifying/focusing on antecedents (what precedes your behavior or feelings) and consequences (what follows a behavior). The next step is to consciously change the antecedents and consequences of your behavior, rewarding yourself as you do so, and thereby slowly and steadily lift yourself out of depression.
A behavioral focus also means that this book will not help you analyze how you got started in your depressive behavior patterns. The authors believe it is not necessary to dig through all that stuff that in order to change yourself.
So in a way, this book is the antithesis of "talk therapy" -- I'd call this "do therapy".
The authors acknowledge that there are multiple roads to depression, that every depressed person has a unique set of problems. However, many of these problems can be lumped into broad categories, each of which is given a chapter clearly explaining strategies for improving your skills in that area. The strategy chapters include: "Learning to Relax", "Pleasant Activities", "Learning How to Be Socially Skillful", "Using Your Social Skills", "Controlling Thoughts", and "Constructive Thinking".
For my bout of depression, the two chapters I needed to focus on were "Pleasant Activities" and "Constructive Thinking".
The idea behind "Pleasant Activities" is that you are depressed because most of your interactions with your environment do not have rewarding outcomes and/or have dissatisfying, unpleasant, or distressing outcomes. So, to change your depression, you need to change the balance so that you get more positive than negative payoffs from interacting your environment, every single day.
I actually had to rate a list of 320 activities (provided) with how pleasant I found them and how frequently I was able to do them, and then use that to create an activity list with 100 things I like and am able to do. I added a few of my own that were not included in the list. Then I had to make a daily plan that made time for several of those activities every day, and I had to chart my daily mood so I could see if I felt better when I did more of those activities.
This was incredibly valuable to me, and highly effective. When I start feeling depressed I want to hole up and sleep, doing only the most "necessary" activities (which often tend to be quite unrewarding - dishes, laundry, etc...). The authors insist that you do activities you LIKE to do, regardless of their actual utility.
For me, my list includes things like carve stamps, write reviews on Amazon, watch Voyager episodes, make stuff with beads and/or fabric, talk on the phone with a friend, etc... When I feel that slump coming on, it is too easy to view these activities as TIME WASTED, something to beat myself up about. The thing I now keep in mind is that the small things that energize me and make me happy are actually IMPORTANT in and of themselves, just because I like to do them.
"Constructive thinking" was also very helpful to me, because I realize that I have these ongoing monologues in my head that are very critical and very hurtful -- I say things to myself I would NEVER say to my children, things that I know would be devastating to say to children -- and yet, I listen to myself say horrible thing after judgmental thing after critical thing to myself!!
Well anyway. It may sound like this book has a simplistic view of depression, but actually, I think it is quite well rounded. It provides the framework for an action plan to combat depression, but you fill in the details.
There are a few potential problems with this book. First, you have to know yourself pretty well in order to use the book. You have to know what actually rewards you, what your strengths and weaknesses are. You have to be able to assess yourself with the tools the book gives you. Some people may need help to do this.
The second issue is that it takes a fair amount of work to set up these monitoring and behavior programs for yourself. It takes a fair amount of self-discipline to keep following through (although you are supposed to be rewarding yourself for the steps you take). Some people may need help to do this.
Finally, I think that some people's brains may not be wired to think in quantitative terms. I tried to explain the "Pleasant Activities" list to another friend who felt depressed, and she was aghast. She said she could never rate activities, that her brain didn't work that way. So if she wanted to try this book, she would probably need help to work through it, to think about her problems in a behavioral, quantitative way.
For me, I think this was a little easier because we used ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) with my son years ago when he was 3, so I was very familiar with the concepts driving this book, and quite experienced with the work involved in keeping up behavioral programs.
Oh, one more thing, this book directly doesn't address existential dispair. But to my way of thinking, even people who are agonized over world events or "what it all means" -- these people still have to live in and interact with their environment. The more rewarding those interactions are, then, at least for me, the less crushing the "big picture" things become. And in fact, if you can get beyond despair and hopelessness, you might actually become an instrument for change, you might actually be able to do something meaningful about other people's suffering, to somehow put your compassion and angst into action.
Well anyway. That's my 2 cents about this book, for what its worth. I loved it, I credit it with preventing my downward spiral and bringing me back in touch with some of the things I need to do in order to enjoy and appreciate life.
