From Medieval Times to WWII and Beyond Enchanting Pontic Time Travel Adventures That Will Surely Outwit Harry Potter's Magic

Should there be a class about history for 14-year old boys and 15-year old sisters, Marót, the 13-year-old boy in the latest adventure book, The Year My Whole Country Turned Jewish (now available through 1stBooks Library) would certainly outdo and outwit the legendary Harry Potter.

Marót, the wonder boy and his sister Chichek have traveled as far away as Medieval times through World War II and back to the present religious conflicts in the Middle East. Author, Anne Hart painstakingly recreates these memorable historical events and offers loads of adventures, excitement and surprises in her most recent book, The Year My Whole Country Turned Jewish: A Time Travel Adventure in Medieval Khazaria with the Steppe Kids.

It takes place between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea in medieval times when migrations were the day and the first crusade had only been in the planning stage. Hart is an award-winning novelist, textbook author, and playwright of a large musical and artistic family from the Greek Islands; she has written over 55 books and dozens of articles, plays and course books. In The Year My Whole Country Turned Jewish, she presents what seems to be an impossible task, bringing together century-old tales, multicultural stories and awe-inspiring historical accounts of Jewish origin.

Hart's spectacular journey begins during the 9th and 10th century at the renowned Medieval Khazaria, the only Jewish state that exists outside Israel. Here, she blends actual accounts of the Jewish struggle against Russian pagan empire and the Vikings with a gripping family saga. The story is told from the perspective of an insightful young Marót who rescued his family from tyranny.

Their journey from Khazaria overflows with memories of the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople which all played significant roles in the history of Judaism. Harts version of the book for young readers, The Day My Whole Country Turned Jewish also is published with illustrations, stories, and poems on the same theme.

Also see Hart's multicultural female sleuth books, her Armenian detective character (female) Tweechig Haroutunian, her Eygptian/Greek Mizrahi character, in A Private Eye Called Mama Africa, and her other novels listed at www.iuniverse.com or www.1stbooks.com. She writes several novels a year as she has done since 1963. This is a spectacular book in the style of Harry Potter with a multicultural nuance. Great book for young teen readers. I also enjoyed Anne Hart's DNA Detectives Series, and her novel, The Courage to be Jewish and the Wife of an Arab Sheik as well as a version and poem of Marot's story in The Day My Whole Country Turned Jewish, which is a poem, a story, and illustrations from Marot's diary. The Year book focuses on Chichek's diary story of time travel. A wonderful read for young teens with the whole family.

For the age 12-16 reader, this is the best novel I've read on time-travel adventure in 9th-10th century Khazaria. The words and imagnation from the point of view of a 15-year old girl is comparable in philosophy to the diaries of women and girls facing the destruction of their homeland and their need to find a new homeland. This is an excellent book by an author of 55 published books. I highly recommend all of Anne de Sola Hart's fine novels, particularly her series on the DNA Detectives and her romance/suspense novels listed here. This book is a winner, and from a young girl's point of view as a powerful heroine saving her people. Truly a Joan of Arc of the Volga/Caspian world of medieval time-travel. Wow! Highly recommended. I also highly recommend Anne Hart's novel, The Courage to be Jewish and the Wife of an Arab Sheik, and her novel, New Afghanistan TV Anchorwoman. Truly an international buffet!

This book probably did more to help save my current work situation than any other book I've read. I picked it up at a church library sale thinking it sounded interesting, but didn't read it until one Sunday morning when I was at a place of deep discouragement and disappointment with the new job I was in. I read about the three stages that we go through with new situations and as I came to understand the premise of the book, God began to change my heart toward the job He had given me. I have purchased it for a friend and have another copy ready to be handed out to the next person who wants to give up. God wants us to work THROUGH the circumstances He allows, not to give up in them. There are so many blessings waiting on the other side when one perseveres with God's help. I highly recommend it!

This book is full of "gold nuggets" for living life to the fullest. Ray and Anne's book is filled with encouraging words based on truth. You don't have to be thinking of "quitting anything" to benefit from this book of wisdom. It's a great book to own and one I'm sure I'll refer back to many times as I encourage myself and others to live for Zone C!

This is a book about staying power, perseverance. It is loaded with solid truths from the Bible. It points out the necessity of standing firm in the midst of difficult circumstances. A fresh perspective is given to help readers see beyond the present and as a result their hopes are built. Consider the quote on page 15, "The most meaningless statistic in a ball game is the score at halftime." From that observation they go on to describe how every situation involves a process consisting of a beginning, middle and end. They illustrate using several examples from the Bible.
They cite medical evidence that hope is a force that "leads to physiological changes that can improve the body's resistance" (p. 31). Hope is viewed as "God's gift to you to keep you healthy and positive and persevering" (p. 33).
It really gets exciting on page 36 when they tell us "What is it God created you to do in your life? He's had projects in mind for you since the beginning of time, which no one can complete but you." They base that oh Ephesians 2:10 which teaches that we are God's workmanship in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
The book contains a weath of practical spiritual advice on how to live life to the hilt, on target with focus.
Buy it! Read it! Do it!

This book starts with a graphical, three part model that forms the basis of the book. It describes each task / journey / endeavor / relationship, etc. as going through three stages - the initial startup phase, the "problem phase" and the success or maintenance phase. It then provides valuable insight to what characterizes each phase and prepares you for barriers that will occur and offers sound strategies to counter them. Forewarned is forearmed. Some would say this is pretty simple, but I think many powerful concepts are indeed simple. This is a book that you can easily read in a few sittings but it's model and message will stay with you forever. I've given copies to my 3 children and two friends - one contemplating divorce and the other wanting to quit his job. Highly recommeneded to all ages and all people. Wish I had read it when I was in high school.

Grace is the tricky part

Review Date: 2008-02-04
Anne Crosman's "Young at Heart" is a thoughtful and loving exploration of the territory of old age, a region many of us would rather not hear about until we get there. Her traveling companions are a well-chosen troupe of plain and fancy folk who have all reached the far end of the normal lifespan.

Ms. Crosman's journalistic skills are evident as she draws out her subjects and subject couples with general questions on their beliefs, their views on work, health, love and family. There is general agreement on the importance of diet and exercise, continuing the parallel journeys of learning and work unto the end, and the need to nourish and cherish connections with those we love.

Asking for advice from her subjects to the younger generation, Ms. Crosman teases out responses both thoughtful and amusing. Steve Allen counsels keeping in close touch with your inner child, the sillier the better. Marjorie van Ouwerkerk Miley wrote, while completing her college education at age 81, "Ban all mirrors!" Piano great Billy Taylor extolled the joys of passing along the gift through mentoring: "I can't give it back to Jo Jones or Art Tatum or Teddy Wilson or any of those guys. They're gone. So the best thing I can do is to do whatever I can for someone else who is YOUNGER."

Ms. Crosman's book is subtitled "Aging Gracefully with Attitude." None of her subjects shies away from the less attractive aspects of the aging mind and body, but grace becomes manifest in the energy these lively survivors devote to pushing these inconveniences into the background as they pursue their zestful explorations of this new country. Rather than viewing the journey through time as a descent into the gathering dark, Ms. Crosman's explorers report unexpected blessings: "The art of loving grows deeper, the act of learning...more precious, and the rewards of work multiply." Attainment of grace may be the tricky part, but Ms. Crosman's 57 insightful studies offer many ways to get there.

This has been one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read! I felt very enlightened by the words of wisdom from the different men and women, Anne Crosman, the author, interviewed.

I loved her writing style! She was able to capture the different personalities and I felt like I actually met with these people personally. It's the kind of book I like to go back to when I need a little motivation. Young At Heart is an ageless book and a book for all ages. It really proves that everyone of us has a purpose in life and if we don't know which one, this book gives you the inspiration so we can always be Young At Heart! Young at Heart is truly uplifting, it is a must read and a must share.

Role models for a new age

Review Date: 2008-01-24
By a "new age," I don't mean the Age of Aquarius. I mean... sixty-two. Sixty-two, which I reach next year, will be a new age for me. Statistics say with reasonable luck I should reach that new age, then seventy, and eighty, and with very good luck ninety, and... who knows?

But what will I do? Assuming that I WILL live, HOW will I live?

"Young at Heart: Aging Gracefully with Attitude" consists of fifty-seven or so interviews with good role models. Crosman says she posed them the same question: "What was their secret of living long and well?"

There are no pat answers. Crosman says up front that their secret was "not to dwell on aging," but that's no answer. It just raises the next question, HOW do you do that? The answers--specific, individual, and crackling with energy--come out in the interviews.

The style is journalistic. This, Crosman says, is what old people who are living well do, and how they do it. Most of the interviewees have unsentimental, no-nonsense attitudes. They don't say aging is great. Ruth Christie Stebbins says "This business of hip-hooraying being 100 years old--I say anybody who goes when their 80 years old is the lucky one!"

The book does not consist of abstract advice. It is fact on fact, seemingly prosaic detail on detail. It doesn't feel inspirational in the usual sense; the language is plain and colloquial. And yet something comes through.

If I--well, OK, I can't escape the song lyrics--If I should survive to a hundred and five--nobody is going to be able to tell me what _I_ need to do for myself. But here is what other people are doing. Here are people who have explored that territory and Anne Snowden Crosman has brought their reports back.

I think this book would be a good gift for anyone approaching retirement age.

Oh, the interviews are with Steve Allen, Ray Geiger, Lina Berle, Malcolm Boyd, Sammy Cahn, Ressa Clute, Elizabeth and Edmund Campbell, Servando Trujillo, Nien Cheng, Paul Spangler, Georgie Clark, Monk Farnham, Marjory Stonman Douglas, Aveline and Michio Kushi, Edmund deTreville Ellis, Martha Griffiths, Dale Evans and Roy Rogers, Jeanne Beattie Butts, J. William Fulbright, Maggie Kuhn, Patric Hayes, Lillie and Ralph Douglass, Skitch henderson, Helen Kearnes Richards, Theodore Hesburgh, Ruth Warrick, Hildegarde, John Hench, Evelyn Bryan Johnson, Richard Erdoes, George jones, Lucille Lortel, Ethel Keohane, Michael Werboff, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, J. R. Simplot, Art Linkletter, Mary Sherwood, Sarah Newcomb McClendon, Russell Meyers, Ruth Schick Montgomery, Margaret Chase Smith, Gordon Parks, Ruth Christie Stebbins, Les Paul, John Lautner, Linus Pauling, Jewel Plummer Cobb, Ruth Stafford Peale, Maurice Abravanel, Hank Spalding, Marjorie van Ouwerkerk Miley, Benjamin Spock, Dorthy Davis Bohannon, Billy Taylor, Molly Yard, and Helen Ver Standig.

This is a delightful and entertaining story of life during the WWII era. Though the family of the story is Jewish, the love, the trials, the tragedies, and the triumps could be those of any family in the world. This is a story for young and old alike. We can all relate to someone in the Meyer family. My only regret is that the book wasn't longer. I found myself anxiously turning pages to read more about Anne and her family. This story is of the same caliber as the Little House books.

"Zaidy" by Anne Silber is the story of a young girl living in an extended family; mother, father, aunt, and grandfather where each has an impact on Anne's growing up, especially Zaidy, her Jewish grandfather. You experience the era of World War II through the eyes of a seven year old girl. It's a heart-warming book that should be read by everyone, young or old. My nine-year old great-grandson and my friends up to my age, 87 years, and older have loved it.

"Zaidy" is a wonderful story, clearly written to show the love shared by a typical Jewish family. A great way to introduce students to the Jewish culture, this book also gives an inside view into a particular era in time. The vocabulary associated with the Jewish culture and the glossary are great teaching tools. "Zaidy" is a user friendly book for teachers of older students.

Anne Silber's "Zaidy" is a fine little historical, telling the story of a young girl's relationship with her grandfather in the 1940s. ("Zaidy is the Jewish word for Grandfather.) Annie, the author's protagonist, copes with a new neighborhood, the pressures of the World War II home-front, and the arrival of Zaidy. Lessons of tolerance, family, and change are stitched into the nostalgic narrative. My daughter loved this book. It is the sort of story a parent (or grandparent) used to read to children before we delegated such pleasures to the television.

If you think Mexican cooking is all refried beans and tacos, think again. This book will introduce you to the coastal cuisine of Veracruz, where Spanish, Caribbean, and Mediterranean influences all can be found. A long introduction to the region, cooking, and people of Veracruz precede the recipes, which include everything from appetizers and small plates to dessets, beverages, rice and of course seafood and meat.

Some dishes are simplicity themselves, such as the wonderful Peppered Shrimp. Others are much more involved and complicated, such as the Stuffed Boned Chicken Legs. Still, if you are truly interested in learning about a wonderful and often overlooked cuisine, there is no better Mexican cookbook I've found yet that contained so many delicious and different recipes. Highly recommended.

Mexican chef and New York restaurateur, Zarela has very decided and exacting ideas about food. She came late to the cuisine of coastal Veracruz, thinking it too touristy and modern for her taste. But she has come to love the place and opens her book with a culinary driving tour of the region, discussing terrain, local ingredients and the best restaurants. The recipes make plentiful use of seafood, various chilies, corn, beans, tomatoes, citrus and avocado.

From Almond Soup to Shrimp Salad to Totonac-Style Beans with Pumpkin Seeds to Shredded Chicken in Blackberry Liqueur Sauce, Zarela insists on fresh herbs, painstaking preparations and the finest ingredients (which she often laments of finding in the U.S.). Dishes range from simple to elaborate (more time-consuming than complicated); the photographs of the region and the food are beautiful, and Zarela's directions are clear. This is Mexican food at its finest.

In a country that is very over populated, the Garfagnana Valley of Northern Tuscany remains pleasantly remote and untraveled. Ms. Biachi does a fine job in catching the real food and the people of this region. The soups featured are treasures of Italian peasant food. The recipes are tasty, healthy and easy to make. My personal favorites are Ceci, Mele, Salisiccia e Patate alla Garfagnana and the Sausage and Savoy Cabbage Soup. The only thing better in the Garfagnana Valley than the food is the hiking.

I bought this book for inspiration and new ideas for warm, nourishing and comforting soups. I got that and much more. There are over 130 inspiring recipes for soups, each described in the context of how it fits into the lives of the people who make it. The chapters are organized by the major types of soups--broths; vegetables; bread, puree and cream soups; rice, pasta, polenta and chestnuts; farro; lentils and chickpeas; beans, fish; meats. Each chapter is introduced with an insightful overview of some aspect of the character of natives of the Garfagnana, a little known area of Northern Tuscany where all these soups originate. I've loved the soups I've made--a rich vegetable broth, wonderful by itself with Gorgonzola cheese crumbled in, even better as the base of a thick hearty soup with potatoes, butternut squash and Savoy cabbage; a rich chicken broth which served as the base for a spinach/butternut squash soup and a mushroom broth with watercress. Among the soups on my to-do list is a shrimp and baby artichoke soup served over focaccia, and Garmugia--a meat-rich soup with asparagus and artichokes used in the 1600's to cure depression. This is a cookbook to read cover to cover, soups to fall in love with, and a wonderful-sounding region in the Tuscan Alps to dream about visiting.

A friend who owns a bookstore saw me looking at this book in his store and said, "Oh, you must have this book. My wife and I have tried several recipes from this book, and we love it." For some reason, I'd never thought of a whole cookbook just for soups, but that's because (I've discovered) my imagination was lacking. I love to cook, and I love to have good stuff in the refrigerator during the week to warm up, and I like to able to throw things together. The soups here, and the theory that accompanies the text, makes all this very easy and very delicious. I've recommended it to several other friends, and they have all enjoyed it very much.

My grandmother raised her family during the depression and has always relied on inexpensive and plentiful meals to serve to her family. Soup or "Zuppa" has always been a staple in her freezer and often shows up on her table. When she received this a a birthday gift form me she was delighted. It breaks each region of Italy into it's distinctive cooking styles. There are dozens of soup recipes that are sure to keep the palate pleased and my grandmother busy experimenting with the recipes. An excellent cookbook for those who love soups!

As a book collector I have all kinds of book collections. And among my favorite children's books are the counting books. Then again, among the counting books Anne Geddes' 123 is really a winner.

Anne Geddes' photographies are the cutest. Let's start with the front cover, Three small baby bunnies in a pink basket. And Anne Geddes' bunnies, like all the other figures in the book, are real babies. And cute as buttons all of them. The same three baby bunnies are also hiding among the numbers 123 on the front cover.

The book has one page for every number, one pumpkin, two cabbages, three clowns and so on, all the way through the book.

The pictures are so perfectly done, Anne Geddes really masters this art. Looking through the book, giving attention to the pictures is sure to give you an enjoyable time.

Carry this smart coach and sell better fast and consistently

Lots of great advice clearly culled from a great deal of experience working with the best. The book is clearly organized, concise and easy to carry, all of which make it worth reading through and carrying as a coaching tool. If you're shooting for successful sales, here are 365 "triggers" that will really help you set up the sales, negotiate, close and follow through. Understanding principles and strategies is great, but worth little without application. This book is an easy way to get help with both.

I can't believe there is so much useful information packed into one small, highly readable book. While it very effectively covers the entire sales process from probing to closing, the section on negotiating alone makes this book worth its weight in gold. I return to it time and again.

Incredible content, easy to read, extremely helpful.

Anne,

I have a very important sales meeting this afternoon. I have been in sales for nearly 5 years and I have had tremendous success without much formal training. On a couple of appointments with my national sales manager, he noticed that my style was very shiny but not polished. He had asked me to read various "how to" sales books.

I have just finished reading your book "365 Sales Tips for Winning Business". In my opinion, it was the easiest most informative sales books I have ever read. I am going into my meeting this afternoon with much more ammunition than i have ever had. My confidence level has increased very dramatically. I wish to thank you ahead of time, I know i will close this customer today.

sincerely

It is a pleasure to read a food book with such vast information. With its tightly written entries, I can absorb knowledge while relaxing. I have worked with freshly prepared food and fresh produce all my life. My father is an avid gardener.
With my past 30 years of experience in restaurant work and as a produce specialist, it is uplifting to keep learning from this book. The ABC'S OF FOOD has fascinated and challenged me to broaden my horizons. I highly recommend THE ABC'S OF FOOD to any age group. --Joan Harness, Wal-Mart Superstore Produce Specialist

Ulmer and Calhoun have presented a comprehensive food library that is sprinkled with stories and anecdotes that keep the reader at full attention. It is easy to read, concise yet useful by its brevity, and gives the reader what he is looking for. It has both utility and entertainment. Bravo Ulmer and Calhoun!

ABC'S OF FOOD encyclopedia is one of the most interesting and informative books I have. For example, I assumed in eating the abalone that we ate the body. In the ABC'S OF FOOD I learned it's the foot we eat. It even explained how to cook and tenderize the foot. Most fascinating were the how and where foods, such as Hot Cross Buns, originated from. With the explanation of terms, such as Dry Water, I can now answer customer questions. I work in the food area of the largest retail chain in the world and I am asked about lots of products. Now if I don't know the answer, I use my ABC's book!
Also, reading about such down home wild foods as chinquepins
(chinky pins), hickory nuts, muskadine grapes, and pawpaws brought back childhood memories of following my daddy through the woods, looking for these, along with sassafras roots for the tea in the winter for better health. And if I got hungry while there, we ate veenie weenies (Vienna Sausages)with crackers. I wonder how many of the readers have some of the same fond memories. It would be very interesting to hear from them. I hope there is a follow up book VERY soon! Linda Clark,

I have been developing applicaitons for a number of year now with Access 97 and have many books I have used. This book has become my most recommended. I have found many books on Access to be either too basic or too advanced for me. This book talks about basic concepts and then adds enough advanced information that almost anyone could learn something from it. The concepts are explained in a very understandable way. I wish I had bought this years ago!

must for anyone who develops serious applications in Access

Client/Server Programming for Access 97 is a must have for anyone who develops serious applications in Access 97. It contains clear, practical guidelines to create and polish client/server applications using Access 97. I recommend this book to both novices and experts since it impossible to believe that there will not be something of value for anyone who reads it. It can be read cover to cover or used as a reference. As a footnote, I must also add that the paper quality is unusually good and the layouts completely avoid descriptions on one page and diagrams on the other.

Excellent coverage of the entire topic

I just finished the book and I loved it! It does a very nice job of covering the entire topic in enough depth to provide real answers, while leaving plenty of room for exploration. I'll be downloading some of the examples soon. I particularly liked the "Paired-Pages" arrangement where the right page summarizes and supplements the material presented on the left. It delivers the concepts in convenient bite-size pieces with immediate, built-in reinforcement. It will get my highest recommendation. It now takes it's place on my shelf alongside the other Access "Bible", the Sybex Access97 Developer's Handbook.
