I have a variety of products from Anne Taintor. I just love her humorous expressions combined with old photographs. This organizer is unique. Being a writer and keeping a variety of journals of thoughts, I try to organize them so I can find them quickly if ever I need to. I was very pleased with this product, needless to say.

Anna Taintor's work, including this organizer, is fantastic. I bought this for my wife.

"Jewish Mothers" is terrific. The diversity of subjects, storytelling images, and biographical essays are excellent windows into the variety and complexity of American Jewish Womanhood. The opening essay about Joyce Antler highlights the importance of Jewish family attitudes in promoting the success and strength of so many of these subjects. The photos which accompany each essay illuminate the experiences and personalities of each woman. My favorite is the joyful exhuberant joyfulness of Rachel Eitches as she nurses her twin babies. Great shot. Readers interested in women's issues, Jewish life and culture, and intergenerational relationships will find this book stimulating. Makes a great bat mitzvah gift.... Alice Gross

Truth is more fantastic than fiction.

Joe Wilson would likely be the first to admit that many contributed to the creation of Xerox. But he was the glue that held everyone together. Without Wilson, adoption of the technology might have been delayed by decades. Computer printers would have remained impact devices for decades longer. The laser printer might not have seen the light of day until recently.

There are so many remarkable facets to this story, that if it were a work of fiction readers might criticize the plot for being too fantastic and contrived.

First, the technical inventor, Chester Carlson, was listed as one of the richest men in America in the late 1960s by Forbes Magazine. He wrote the magazine informing them that they ranked him too high because he had donated two-thirds of his fortune away anonymously in earlier years.

His mother died as he was entering his teen years and his father had tuberculosis. Chester had to work for a living as an adolescent. Despite this, he somehow graduated from Cal Tech during the Great Depression.

Second, when Wilson's company was looking for funding he sought financial partnerships with every important office equipment company in the United States, but was turned down in every instance.

Third, IBM declined to partner with Xerox in the formative years. They hired Arthur D. Little to do a nearly year-long study of the product potential which concluded that the market size was too small at only $200 million. Later, after Xerox was an obvious success, IBM told Wilson that it should be granted an exclusive license to compete so that Xerox would not run afoul of antitrust regulations.

Fourth, during an era when the company was a shinning success, Wilson's publicity-hungry lawyer permitted Life Magazine to prominently feature a story implying he (the lawyer) was the "man behind Xerox". While this infuriated his wife, Wilson seems to have been largely silient on the transgression.

Fifth, xerography was invented during the Great Depression, in an era that was risk averse. It was brought to commercial success by a lab in Columbus, Ohio and an modest company in upstate New York. While the cities were far from being technological backwaters, neither were they the putative leaders.

The story inspired me to start a Wiki on this book.

How Joe Wilson transformed Haloid into Xerox

This notable biography recounts the remarkable story of Joe Wilson, a shy entrepreneur who overcame tremendous technological and business challenges to develop an entirely new photographic process and create the Xerox Corporation. Wilson was a powerful but quiet leader who motivated employees, family members, business associates and his community to achieve the impossible. Charles D. Ellis presents a comprehensive portrait of the man and his times, highlighting the roles of luck and perseverance. He tells how Wilson built a revolutionary machine even before he had a market and, in that process, pioneered a new technology and transformed his grandfather's small company into Xerox. The story is slow at times, but we highly recommend Ellis's inspirational business profile to those who enjoy stories of legendary business leaders and the companies they built.

Leadership must Have Soul

Joe Wilson led Xerox through more years of uninterrupted growth at a more rapid pace then achieved by any other company. This fact is sufficient motivation to read Charles Ellis' comprehensive and compelling story of Joe Wilson and the creation of Xerox. Most business aficionados think they know the story but this book will truly open your eyes and mind. Mr Ellis' thorough research and deft prose reveals the true leadership genius of Joe Wilson. The Xerox journey, from it's humble Haloid beginnings, through the twists and turns resulting in the introduction of the 914, reads like an adventure novel worthy of Eric Larson. The introduction of Joe Wilson to Chester Carlson, the inventor of Xerography, was just the beginning. The author provides countless examples of situations that could have derailed the success of Xerox.Examples include Homer Piper's invention of Haloid Record during the thirties. Without this milestone,Haloid would not have survived the depression and therefore Xerox would not have evolved. The author also explores how Xerox managed to avoid being acquired by the mega Corps.,once the potential of Xerox was understood.Tom Watson, IBM CEO, stated that failing to pursue the acquition of Xerox was the biggest regret of his career. It's almost a foregone conclusion that GE would have purchased Xerox if,at the time,it wasn't distracted by developing the technology for color TV.The true genius of Mr. Ellis'is his ability to bring Joe Wilson alive through the pages of this monumental work. Joe Wilson's leadership, vision, passion and creativity are a wonder to behold. His true commitment to customers, shareholders and employees are truly inspiring.Even with the technology, Xerox would never have been successful without Joe Wilson's commitment to R&D,his insight in developing his management team, his dedication to employee relations. The list could go on and on.Two other areas that are worthy of highlighting. First, the author explores Joe Wilson's dedication and unselfish service to improving the social welfare both in his community, country and globally. His undying commitment to diversity and the bold actions he initiated to bring the dream to a reality are inspiring and should serve as prime examples for present and future business leaders. Finally, the in depth profiles of all those VPs,managers, engineers, employees, suppliers, that actively and unselfishly shared Joe Wilson's vision and who turned it into a resounding success are truly a joy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has even a passing interest on what it takes to be a successful and compassionate leader in business.

In times of NAFTA, the relations between Mexico and USA are very unstables: indocummented migration, racialism, intercultural commnuciation, etc. are topics very importants for them, and they're shaped in Carlos Fuentes' La frontera de cristal. This novelist, maybe most important of today's Maxico and Latin America, give us a nine shortstories of love, immagination, and hope about of possible mexicans and gringos cohabitation in north and south of Rio Grande/rio Bravo for to go through the crystal frontier.

Geddes' book, A Labor Of Love, is truly inspirational. There's a softness to her tone that is warm and inviting; like having a cup of java with a friend. She talks a little bit about her life, but mostly this is a journey about her rise to fame as a renowned baby photographer. She talks a little about her struggles, a little about how she achieved certain looks, and why she chose the path she chose. The photos, of course, are phenomenal!

I truly enjoyed the Labor of Love: An Autobiography by Anne Geddes. I have always been fascinated with the pictures of the babies in the yearly calendars. It is so great to read the stories about the babies and to see how some of them have grown over the years. This booklet is a treasure to have and it sits on my coffee table in my living room to be easily accessible to my family and friends. I purchased the book as a Christmas gift to myself and it was truly worth it!!

This book is an excellent introduction to the study of the English language. It has useful examples and is written in an engaging style. It makes for an extremely interesting read. What stands out most is that you require no prior knowledge of language or linguistics to understand the concepts that are highlighted in the book. It is a book that gives you all the basic knowledge you need about how the English language works. This is certainly a comprehensive and accessible book for anyone interested in language.

This is an excellent introductory textbook for first year undergraduates of Linguistics. This book covers the basic concepts across most of the major areas in Linguistics, equipping students with enough knowledge to advance into more specialised fields later. At the same time, the concepts are elucidated in a clear and systematic manner that helps to engage the students in a non-threatening manner. What is really useful and different about this book is the teaching of concepts in a pro-active way, and thus the whole process of reading and learning becomes one of discovery, rather than a passive prescription of theories with a predetermined perspective.

An valuable resource, and certainly a good textbook to have at any level.

Using `The Language of Language'

I've been using `The Language of Language' for freshmen students of Linguistics and find it a great improvement on most other books I've used. For one thing, this book is written to encourage active learning rather than passive reading of new concepts. Through the process of grappling with the puzzles and exercises, an amazing amount of `new' knowledge is generated and a lot of argument as well, some of it spilling over into out-of-classtime debates and questioning. This is mainly due to the way the book is conceptualised as a journey towards understanding language -- making the path challenging but never intimidating; sometimes debatable but never dull. This is exactly what freshmen need -- I can see them referring to this book even when they go into the higher levels of academia, whenever they need to refresh their knowledge of the basics. Above all, this book proves that humour and scholarship can be combined in a way that is very appealing to students.

This book is a joy to read and an excellent text to use for an undergraduate Introduction to Linguistics course. It is different from many of the other textbooks that I have read or used in that the authors do not attempt to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field, but rather are deliberately selective in the materials they choose to present. I like the selective aspect of the text as students are not overwhelmed with details, but yet enough details are provided for students to appreciate and understand the core concepts and issues relating to language structure and use, and to learn to think like a linguist. The explanations are clear and often followed by real life examples and analogies, and the suggested activities, which reinforce the concepts discussed in the text, are fun. I like the fact that the morphology chapters are sequenced before the phonetics and phonology chapters. I think that the level of words is more easily accessible than the level of sounds for beginning students, and the particular sequencing presents a gentle transition to the more technical aspects of the course.

Altogether much more than "just a book" and invaluable for the group leader. I just hope Anne Bruce's next book takes on the lonely entrepreneur.

This was the textbook for an introductory course in business law I took. It does a great job at laying the groundwork of the US legal system and explodes many common myths. A large amount of material is covered clearly and consisely. The chapters on contracts and constitutional law alone are worth the price of the book. The authors do a good job hitting the high points and not getting bogged down in details that are inappropriate for an introductory course.

There are a few typographical errors that carried over to the thirteenth edition and ought to have been caught. Because this is a survey course, the reader may find supplemental material such as a law dictionary necessary to understand some of the finer points.

Informative, enlightening, and well-organized.

Like many Americans, I didn't know much about our country's principles of government or its legal system. This book helped me to become more knowledgeable about both. I admit, this is not reading I would choose to curl up with in front of the fire; this was part of a requirement for my MBA. However, I will remember what I've learned in this text long after my class ends. Having previously been clueless about the legal system, it is now exhilarating to read about, say, how the nine US Supreme Court Justices are dealing with the aftermath of the Gore vs. Bush debacle and actually understand what is going on. The chapters are well-organized and easy to understand. There are even helpful study tips and ways to brief a legal case in the beginning of the text. After completing this book, I not only feel better equipped to handle business decisions, but also feel empowered and enlightened for better understanding our great country.

I am not normally a fan of the short story genre -- usually short stories are all about plot or Some Grand Idea, and you have to let them go just when you're starting to get interested. Rebecca Meacham's stories are full of beautiful, knowable characters who draw you in from the first sentence and allow you to sit down, stay awhile, and learn something about someone who is, at least a little bit, just like you. Each story is complete, complex and satisfying, if sometimes heartbreaking and even devastating. It's the details about the characters that make the difference...the wry humor of a pregnant art teacher trying to hide her growing tummy while fending off possessive parents, the woman who is so nervous about socializing with her neighbor who has just lost a child that she rationalizes fixing a "quick Beam and Coke" before the party starts, the awful detail of an anorexic teenager planning every minute of a day. Meachem's insight into such vastly different human beings is amazing. I can't wait for more.

Let's Do is hands-down one of the best collections of short stories I've come across. The characters were described as people "we don't want to be" and yet, each of them evoked a measure of empathy as I read. The way they spoke and the things they thought were incredibly honest--a testimony to Meacham's talent. There is a frankness to her prose that is endearing. She isn't afraid to probe the raw spots of people's characters, however uncomfortable it may be. At the same time, the collection has its share of hilarious moments: thoughts and actions and mis-guided intentions that made me laugh out loud. This was a great holiday read. Enjoy!

There are surprisingly few books written for siblings of adult children.
I find this odd since the majority of us are siblings, and who knows an adult
better than his/her brother/sister. I purchased and read this book for my daughter
who is grieving the loss of her brother. I found it an easy read, yet reflective
of the bond between two sisters.

Letters to Sara is a must read for anyone that has lost a sibling, but is just as significant to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. The "letters", often very intimate, made me truly feel Anne's tremendous sense of loss for her sister Sara. The book helped me to understand the stages of grief and I realized my own sorrowful phases were a natural progression in healing. The "letters" tell a sincere and candid story of two siblings so different, yet so devoted and they genuinely define the meaning of "sisters". The book is an emotional and frequently funny tribute to Sara's life and I cried many times - for Sara AND Anne, but also for my own grief over the recent loss of my father. Reading Letters To Sara will help reassure that however you suffer through the death of a loved one, no matter how different it appears to others, it is totally natural for you.

Grief takes on a uniquely different dimension when trying to come to terms with the loss of a brother or sister; after all, siblings are linked literally from birth to death, unlike any other form of familial relationship. The loss is so deep that it's like a real part of you has died at the same time. "Letters to Sara" is one woman's wrenching attempt to make sense of the basic unfairness of death, and these letters become a vitally necessary form of self-therapy to try to understand all of the "whys." Far from gloomy, however, author Anne's concise insights are sometimes profound, sometimes simplistic and oft-times humorous. Just like life itself.
While each of the letters is quire short (indeed, the entire book is quite a quick read), each addresses a central question that Anne ultimately answers herself, at least partly. In this wrenching journey, written over a period of three months following her sister's untimely death at 54, Anne agonizes from phase to phase as part of a long healing process that is just the beginning. Death, like life, is irrationally unfair, and Anne experiences flashes of frustration and anger -- with herself, with her brother in law, and even her sister Sara -- trying to work through the process of being left alone as the last survivor. At the core of all of this is the central question: how to adapt to a life without a loved one.
Having recently lost my own kid sister, it was difficult to read this book at a single sitting without breaking down, as the questions posed were both uniquely personal while at the same time universal. Similar to the author's situation, I knew for some time that my sister would not win her battle with cancer, no matter how valiantly she fought. But no matter how foreordained the loss of a sibling may be, you can never really prepare yourself for the huge void that the death of a brother or sister creates. Anne approaches her own grief on a systematic basis -- talking with friends, reading endless books about grief and bringing unresolved questions to her own therapist. This approach helped her to better undersand the process, if not the resolution.
"Letters to Sara" ended up becoming a sort of memorial to Anne's older sister, whom she had idolized her entire life. At one point, she admitted that Sara's "Carpe Diem" personality -- seize the day! -- was the critical philosophy that made Sara's life an incredibly full one, even if tragically short. For anyone going through this very personal trauma, either approaching the inevitable or dealing with the final reality, "Letters to Sara" will serve as an invaluable map to ultimately coming out of the darkness into the sunshine. While things will never be the same, the concept of living every day to its fullest is truly a legacy which will help those who survive heal over time. "Letters to Sara" will provide help, insight and -- best of all -- hope to anyone wondering how they can ever face the future after such a devastating personal loss.

Letters to Sara: The Agony of Adult Sibling Loss
Anne McCurry has accomplished something really unique in her creative tribute to her beloved older sister. Using the style of letter-writing to portray her deep, agonizing loss, she effectively draws a picture of not only the important, much-too-young life that was lost, but also conveys such a strong sense of her own personal loss. I lost my own kid sister last Thanksgiving; unlike Sara, my sister's death was sudden, unexpected and shocking. I found limited resources available in the weeks and months that followed to help me navigate through this enormous crisis.

Now, nearly a year later, I've found some good resources that are helping me to gain perspective. So many of Anne's observations are universally applicable to any grief situation, but with the loss of a beloved sibling, particularly an only sister who was close in age, I could really relate to her analysis that the word "sister" is now a painful one. Anne's experiences with her friends, who want her to "get over it" truly resonate. As if we will ever get over it! Anne's reflections helped me to see that what I'm feeling is not unusual.

Anne's message of continued devotion and loyalty, long after death has separated the sisters and her pledge to keep Sara's memory alive are beautiful, sincere thoughts. I will hold this delightful book close to my heart as I continue to navigate this very tear-stained and slippery slope. I know now that many others have walked in this lonely territory before me; while that gives me no comfort, it provides me with the belief that I too will survive this. Thank you, Anne, for this gift to all of us who have lost a sibling.
