"This book is the funniest dog book I've ever read, and the photos are GREAT! All the dogs are very cute, and the story is funny. Mark, age 10."

It's hardly high society, but don't tell the dogs at Goody Beagle's favorite venue that their dog park is anything but THE place to go for socializing and maybe a treat or two. "Dog Park Diary: The social round of Goody Beagle" chronicles a week at the Robinswood Dog Park in Bellevue, Wash., as told through the eyes of ... you guessed it, Goody Beagle.

A keen observer and somewhat opinionated hound, Goody introduces the reader to his many friends. She also offers commentary on other dogs at the park and explains proper dog park etiquette, including the all-important meet-and-greet. Of course, doggie greetings involve a bit of sniffing, but as Goody explains, it's important to know who is friendly and who is not. It's also a great way to size up new visitors or find out what kind of mood regulars might be in that day.

Goody's owner and the author of the book, Kim Pearson, has successfully found the voice of her canine companion, which makes this 60-page book entertaining and an easy read. Readers who love dogs will enjoy hearing what Goody REALLY thinks about the park and its frequent visitors. The book also includes photographs by award-winning photographer, Anne Lindsay. No dog diary is complete without a pictorial romp in the park with Goody and her friends.

A dog's life may not be laced with as much drama as those of their human counterparts, but they love life and their human companions. And when they interact, they can be very much like humans as well. On second thought, perhaps there is a place where the "Dogs of Society" howl. There's no better way to find out than to pick up a copy of "Dog Park Diary" and settle back for a look at Goody's world through her soulful eyes. Maybe you'll find out just why dogs enjoy being dogs. One good sniff goes a long, long way!

How refreshing. Try to pick your favorite day in the diary, they are all great. Going to the dog park with my dogs has increased our bond even though I still can't speak dog. The lessons in manners from Goody and her friends will give you some idea of what your dog is trying to tell you. The photography couldn't be better. Everyone should enjoy Dog Park Diary.

Dog Park Diary is entertaining on several levels. Adult dog owners will concur that the human attributes ascribed to the various breeds are very perceptive (trust me, I once owned a beagle!). Kids will enjoy the dog interaction through the text and photographs. Additionally, Dog Park Diary serves as a great guide for potential dog owners as to general breed characteristics, especially charm and temperment. A very original book!

Follow Goodie the beagle on a weeks worth of visits to her local dog park in Kim Pearson's new book
"DOG PARK DIARY the social round of Goody Beagle"
Goody shares her experiences and insights as she sniffs snacks and socializes her week away. She introduces us to her friends and enlightens us to the ways of the different "clans" as she describes them. The photographs beautifully bring Goody's story to life. This book will make you want to get in on the fun so grab a leash and your dog and read it at the nearest dog park!

At first glance, when you look at this title and the picture on the book of this very different trilogy and look at the category (fantasy)it's placed in, you might think that this is a book about a shining, knight that lulls dragons to sleep, kills them, and gallops off to marry a maiden in her rich castle. Or, you might think that it's a story about a funny, assertive girl that jus "happens" to discover that she has the power to make legendary creatures come to her. But, it's neither. Instead of reading boring old books that are versions of old fairy tales, this is a completely new plot. In the story, Menolly, the main character, finds that she has a talent for playing instruments, and singing in a Hold where everyine, except her teacher, Periton, shuns her for not being a hard-working woman whose life revolves around fishing. She discovers that her teacher wasn't just a grumpy old hermit halfway to the middle of nowhere, but he used to be a highly respected MasterHarper of the acclaimed Harper Hall, where all musicians first start learning. He sends word to his son, the current MasterHarper, and the whole musical world starts searching for Menolly, expecting an amazing, boy apprentice that even grumpy Periton praised. If you want to find out more, you'lll have to read the trilogy of the Dragons (Dragonsinger, Dragonsong, and DragonDrums). Oh, and why does it have dragons in it? Beacuse, Menolly just happens to own nine fire lizards, which are small, miniature, dragon-like legendary creatures. I would highly recommend it!

Music for Your Eyes

Review Date: 2003-01-24
This is a thoroughly enchanting series. It is a great introduction to Pern for younger readers. The first two books follow the story of Menolly, a young girl who has a gift for music. When her family will not let her use and enjoy her gift she runs away and eventually gets herself to the Harpers Hall where she could study music.
The world of Pern is enticing as well. It is a world which although somewhat similar to earth, has a great problem. Every 200 years they are bombarded by a deadly life form, thread, which falls to their world from an erratically orbiting planet. To deal with this menace, they have bred huge flying dragons that spew flame to sear thread from the sky before it hits the ground killing whatever it hits. Related to the dragons are their smaller cousins, fire lizards. Both creatures have the ability to mentally impress with humans making a lifelong telepathic link brom human to dragon or firelizard. During her adventures after running away, Menolly manages to impress 9 fire lizards. This makes her somewhat of an expert as she has more than anyone else on the planet. It also makes her an object of jealousy.
The second book continues Menolly's story through her first week at Harper's Hall. It was not an easy week as Menolly has to put up with much jealousy and meanspiritedness from the other girls at the school who are not anywhere near as talented as her, but she gets to study music. By the end of the week, she has managed to carve out a unique place for herself. Dragon singer is very much a story of a young girl's coming of age that can be identified with by teens, male and female alike.
Dragon Drums, the third book in the series almost feels like an intruder because it does not carry on Menolly's story. It is the story of her young friend Piemur, a young male apprentice singer in the Harper Hall. Piemur is quite a character whose claim to fame at the Hall is his beautiful soprano voice. When his voice changes, his tenure at the Hall must undergo a change and Dragondrums is the story of his growing up. Dragon drums is not as focused in its plot line as the earlier two books because McCaffrey uses this book frequently to further her story line of the whole Pern series, thus one is introduced to many more characters and much of the greater story of Pern. It is a good link from reading the Harper books to getting into McCaffrey's other Pern books.
I believe that McCaffrey's strongest point as a writer is creating characters that the reader really feels are real people. It is easy to root for her good characters to root against her evil characters. However, the characters are three dimensional characters, not cardboard cut outs. The world of Pern is unique and well developed. This series is a good introduction to Pern and it is also great for those who have read the other Pern books and are looking for more insight into this creative world

Great book with up-to-date information. Book goes into some detail about starting a nail business as well. I was impressed with the quality and the extensive information, techniques, tech tips and excellent pictures. The heavy, glossy pages mean durability when returning back to the book for reference. I would highly recommend this book to any nail tech or nail tech student. It's a book well worth the cost and a priceless addition to my collection.

I bought this book halfway through doing a nail technician course and I found it fantastic. Great tips and hints, gives good advice and explains everything clearly.
My favourite parts were the trouble-shooting pages with explanations for common problems and how to solve them. There are also good sections on learning to be a trainer, nail art and entering competitions.
If you are a complete beginner like me then this book is perfect.

Even though my daughter is 6 months old now, I was crying over and over reading these women's different stories. As a somewhat "edgy" mom, I thought I was completely alone in the way I thought and felt motherhood. These women's stories made me feel a lot less alone even though a few absolutely broke my heart. You will read some of them over and over. I'm so glad a friend gave me this book as a gift because I probably wouldn't have come across it on my own.

I just bought this lovely book for my daughter who is facing a pregnancy alone at 26- Of course I had to delay sending it to her so that I could read it from start to finish- very absorbing- I hope it will help her to realize that she does not have to fit any certain mold to be a mother- This book includes 30 different profiles of mothers. My daughter's story could be #31. I think these women's reflections on what their children mean to them and the changes in their lives will be very helpful to my own daughter. I recommend it for anyone contemplating parenthood. I think it is more helpful than any how-to book could ever be be.

This book is beautiful and moving-- the voices are real and diverse, the photography is stunning, and the content meaningful. As someone who is still contemplating having children, I wanted to hear about it "first-hand," and this book gave me a lot of insights. I think it would be helpful to anyone (male or female) considering children, as well as for those who have just entered the realm of parenthood. You won't regret your purchase!

This book was one of the best gifts I received upon the birth of my first child. The interviews really capture the incredibly diverse voices and experiences of motherhood (parenthood). Listening to these voices--from a physically disabled parent, single mothers, teen mothers, career-oriented parents, lesbian parents, a terminally ill mother, and many others--gives an amazing insight into how real people approach the incredibly important experience of caring for a new human being. Each of the mothers interviewed addresses issues, concerns and fears that I, too, struggle with as I approach the new task of being a mother. This is NOT a "how to" manual, but reading the narratives aloud to my husband enabled us to verbalize and address many of our unvoiced concerns about our new responsibilities and life style. Fabulous narratives and wonderful photographs. New parents will be up to their ears in "onesies" and rattles--this book makes a wonderful gi! ft, by focussing on the phenomenal experience of being a parent.

For the beginning psychology student, or for someone who just wants to learn some of the basics, this is a good book.
I used to for a class and it is quite informative.

It teaches many of the psych terms and gives examples of how the ideas apply to real life. It also gets a little into the biological things having to do with psychology, but not real deep.
A few entertaining things are in there as well, like small comic strips to demonstrate their points in a humorous way.

Awesome for intro. to psychology

It seems that many other books in psychology do not offer information in such a broad and defined view to the wide content that creates Psychology as a science. I would recommend this book to someone instead of the For Dummies or Complete Idiots Guide series. The logic behind many concepts are shown in cartoons, pictures, and presentations. I would say this book, in many aspects, is descriptive.

This book includes the following:

- Diseases and disorders

- Cognitive science (learning, developmental stages, etc.)

- neuroscience/neurophysiology (schizo mind, neural connections)

- Psychophysics, which describe how the human body interprets information through their senses.
(THIS IS NOT IN A LOT OF PSYCHOLOGY BOOKS, VERY NECESSARY TO LEARN)

- Psychobiology and evolutionary genetics

From the vantage point of a historian, I value this book as a lavishly illustrated and researched book about the clothing of an era, and how that clothing reflected the intense cultural changes of the 1960s. The outstanding representation of the society of the decade with photographs, drawings, album covers, movie posters and art brought the text to life.

As a Baby Boomer, I saw this book as a nostalgic glance at my school days -- virtually a yearbook for graduates of the Mods, Rockers and Hippie school of fashion.

Fashions of a Decade: The 1960s is highly recommended for the history student, fashion student, or anyone looking for an authentic look into the heart of an era. Brava!

In baseball, a pitcher is said to be "sneaky fast" when his deliveries, although appearing relaxed, and even slow, arrive at home plate so quickly that the astonished batter is rendered defenseless, overwhelmed by their suddeness. By the same token, the writer of this wonderful collection of poems should be called "sneaky profound." Her approach eschews all pretension, refusing to indulge in verbal pyrotechnics or high-flown mannerisms, so that her language, albeit rich and broadly drawn, becomes practically transparent, never intrusive, leaving the reader overwhelmed by the suddeness and depths of her insights into the human dilemma.

These are the stories of a seeker of wisdom who has chosen to search not in the esoteric, or the recherché, but in the places most accessible to her sensibilities, the places of the heart--lovers, husbands, children, friends, work, and play--and to bring forth from those places a vision pregnant with meanings. From the ordinariness of chopping wood and carrying water she has fashioned a bridge to the numinous.

This is a book of riches. Meditative, eloquent, and wise, Anne Valley-Fox's poems rise gently to the surface of consciousness and reach outward with the grace of ripples on a still pond. Both sensual and spiritual, they know of joy and grief, of loss and redemption, of the mystery that hovers always beyond our grasp. With unforced artistry and an appealing clarity of style they present a moving tableau of the transitory fragments that make up a life; they are poems to fill the day with new awareness.

I've learned so much from this book, and I continually turn to it for guidance and information.

When studying human sciences one has to read the widest variety of literature, be it fiction or not. A good friend of mine recommended me to read this book, as well for my studies as for him to know my thoughts about this topic.
I was grasped instantly by reading the first chapter, but got intrigued very strongly by reading further on. At the university and also amongst friends and fellows we discuss all kinds of human problems; in this case anorexia as well. A few female co-students/friends are suffering from this cruell sickness too. All of them, no matter how hard they tried to recover before, seem to stay turning around in a sort of devilish circle, the same way as is written about by Mrs. Beattie. So I recommended them this book, hoping they will get their full health back again very soon: that's what real good friends are for...

The author uses a very direct style in describing what all she went through since her youth, which makes this writing for certain easily accessible to all readers. This is not the first title I read about eating disorders; the others were from professionals, people with a medical background. However, RIGHT HERE I found out about the EXACT causes and triggers that start up anorexia nervosa, bulimia, etc... A lot of things - KEY ISSUES - I read elsewhere, now seem very, very doubtful to me, especially after having discussed this subject with some reknown doctors, psychiatrists, even fellow students who know more about these topics. And OF COURSE after those several times I had the opportunity to talk and discuss with my "wizard", my good old friend who gave me this book and ... already had done his own research; for his advice ànd for the book I will always be grateful to him.
AT MY TURN, I can recommend this book VERY HIGHLY to all people, especially to those who suffer from eating disorders. For they will see lots of myths broken down and above all how one person, ALL BY HERSELF, found out HOW TO STAY ALIVE and be able to function in society and at home in a normal way. To be read and the word spread!

My name is Anne Beattie, I live in South Shields, England, I am the author of 'From Grey Soup to Gateau', and I have suffered with various eating disorders and clinical depression for almost 30 years now, but thankfully I am a whole lot healthier these days and the worst days are past.

"SYNOPSIS OF BOOK....... The six chapters of this 184 page book depict the experiences of Anne Beattie, from her first few months of life to the year she wrote this book at the age of forty. The book tells of her troubled background as seen through the eyes of Anne herself, written from the point of view of the child as each event happened . The whole book is in the first person and it draws the reader through every experience as if they were travelling that road themselves.

It gives a detailed and emotional insight into eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and compulsive overeating, as well as clinical depression and the long term after effects of a traumatic childhood. It will help those who are going through any of the traumas that Anne experienced, as well as helping their families, friends and the medical professionals involved comprehend what are often very misunderstood illnesses. "

I hope you enjoy my book and that it helps you towards recovery

FINALLY ... THE TRUTH ABOUT ANOREXIA

I read this book - written by an anorexia patient - with growing interest and astonishment. AND reread this a second time as I wanted to be sure, because the events had me so tightly in their grip from the very first pages, as I had almost "eaten" the words, the evolution at the first reading.

My eyes and my spirit had "the immense pleasure" to read about THE TRUTH CONCERNING ANOREXIA, bulimia, etc... AND THE DEPRESSION(S) that is/are attached to it. All of this THANKS TO the fact that this book has been written in a comprehensive way BY A PATIENT WHO MANAGED TO SURVIVE ANOREXIA (+ other eating disorders), WHO HAS FOUND THE BALANCE, THE SOLUTION TO BREAK THROUGH THIS TERRIBLE VICIOUS CIRCLE OF ANOREXIA. For about 30 years she has been living in and with this horror. NOW she is finally able again TO LIVE IN A NORMAL WAY, just like we do. Don't be afraid to read this: the author doesn't juggle, throw with difficult medical terms at all!
What is quite interesting as well is that the book can be read on two different levels, in two ways. Whether as an intriguing biography OR as the history of a person (or of a disorder) who suffered from anorexia, bulimia, depression(s) AND MAKES US CLEAR HOW SHE has been fighting all those years against THE MISERY and finally found the solution, the exact balance... TO SURVIVE those problems. This is a real "PREMIERE" while the other works concerning this/these subject(s) have been written by professionals and/or authors who have never been the victim of this horrible sickness.

THIS BOOK reads like "a train", is very well readable and understandable (the first time I read it in one day and a half...). About "THE PLOT, THE REAL ORIGIN" of anorexia and its consequences you will find here NOTHING MORE THAN THE TRUTH (SURPRISING AS SHE IS !!).
VERY WARMLY RECOMMENDED FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART TO ALL OF YOU: PATIENTS, FAMILY, FRIENDS ... AND PROFESSIONALS. THIS IS A GUIDE THAT YOU WILL CARRY WITH YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE !

I bought this book as my wife has suffered with eating disorders all her life and I was amazed by the way it touched me. I have never truly understood these illnesses before I read this book - never really felt what my wife was going through. But this book explains it ALL in a simple way that touches the soul. The author is more honest about her experiences than I have ever know any other writer to be, and I am sure that anyone who reads her book will come away feeling as if they have been somewhere very special indeed. Highly recommended. Thank you!
