This book is great! I think that Anne (NOT MORROW) Lindbergh's books are way too out-of-print and that Amazon (hint, hint)should start getting more copies. It's about a group of families who can't leave the street where they live. They don't age and have been traveling since 1939. They are invisible to ordinary people. A boy 'sees'one of them and is invited to stay in Pineapple Place. But the founder of Pineapple Place, Mr. Sweeney, puts his foot down...

I love this book!!!!

This book was first read to me by my fourth grade teacher and I instantly fell in love with it...I have read this book several times and needless to say I love it more and more everytime I read it... I think it is a great book that helps kids cope with issues that have become so common in our world today. I will graduate from college next year to become a teacher and will read this book to my students and hope that they will enjoy it just as much as I did when my teacher read it to me.

A good book for kids over 5.

The book is about a boy who moves from Vermont because his parents have divorced. In his new town he doesn't have any friends, until he sees a street that begins on P Street that is invisible to almost everyone but him. The people who live on this street are very nice. At the beginning the book was a little boring, but when you got to the middle it started getting exciting and I could not put it down. Towards the end, the book was exciting and a little sad. The ending was happy and sad at the same time, depending upon who you are thinking about. My favorite part of the book was when there was a party in Pineapple Place and August gave strange gifts to each person living in Pineapple Place.

A strange gift

I received this book from an uncle at my Bat Mitzvah in 1983. I couldn't understand why he gave it to me. Then I read it and understood. This book is fabulous. When I became a teacher, this book was always the first "read-aloud" book of the year. No matter how old they were, they could never get enough of it! I even had kids writing stories of their own based on this book, taking the characters to new places! It is one of the best books about friendship that I have ever read.

This is one of Anne Spencer Lindbergh's most exciting novels. For any kid who has ever crawled to the back of a coat closet, hoping in vain that a portal to Narnia would suddenly appear, this is the novel that will get you out of the house and into the streets of your neighborhood, keeping up your quest. The idea (a recurring one in Lindbergh's excellent and hilarious stories) that August Brown, a not-so-perfect child living a not-so-perfect life, can stumble upon magic in the middle of all the unrelieved boredom of modern life is incredibly appealing. That the people who live in Pineapple Place are only visible to August Brown does not make them any less real and the knowledge that even those who live magical lives have troubles which an unmagical friend can help to solve is an incredible lesson. The writers Edward Eager and C.S. Lewis would be proud of their legacy continued in such a fun, contemporary context. Visit Pineapple Place today!

A delightful read for girls

This is a lovely book. It's a book that I highly recommend to girls around third grade level. I found a few areas where the main character used words and phrases not usual to that age group --- more adult. But I expect girls today are more sophisticated than when I was a girl a few moons back.

Girls have an awful time because they have to compete just like boys. Our little trooper just wants to win a contest. Most girls are not perfect. Having to compete with the "perfect" girl is a nightmare that all girls face at one time or another. This little book will give the girl a true look at life as it is and how she can handle the will to win and yet stay true to herself.

Highly recommended.

Funny and informative

You won't believe how much good stuff
Is in this tiny book
And if you have a little girl
I'd say it's worth a look

The story's about two young girls
As different as can be
Cynthia's the perfect one
While Paula's more like me

Cynthia's always neatly dressed
Even her scrunchies match
Paula looks like she's been dragged
Straight through a briar patch

A poster project's been assigned
Only one child can win
Guess who's done and sent it in
And who's yet to begin?

Paula knows she's got a shot
She has a master plan
When "just as good's" not good enough
It must be "better than"

Slowly the project's taking shape
As she works out the kinks
"It's going to be a masterpiece"
The little artist thinks

And when the big day comes around
There is a big surprise
It seems that friendship can be found
Before your very eyes

With Craft and Science for your child
(And very funny too)
Buying this one I would say
Is something you should do

(Rated: 4.5 stars and recommended for young readers, especially girls, from about grade 2)

Poster Girl is a very special book, one that actually has a reason to read to your child or give as a gift. It is absolutely child safe.

Paula wants to build the best poster for the Open House, except she has waited until the night before it is due to start. In the search, she learns many things about trees and plants, and this information is easy for a child (or a forgetful adult) to comprehend because many details are discussed. She does get her project in on time, one day after Cynthia's.

Her arch enemy's, Cynthia, poster is chosen for the place of honor in the Open House, but the principle is so impressed by Paula's work that he decides to display both because they complement each other. Paula is not excited about this because Cynthia was a close friend three years ago, but no longer.

Now Paula finds that she must stay with Cynthia to greet people who come to the Open House. Both answer questions about their posters.

Anne J. Emerick uses this venue to open minds and teach: communication is necessary -- if you have a question, then ask; what seems to be true and painful, probably isn't; face your fears and you will overcome them; don't be so hasty to judge. There are other lessons, and each is revealed with the skill of an educator.

This is a book that I intend to read to my little frieds, ang give it as gifts to other children.

Anne J. Emerick is not a one book flash, which is evident by reading the a few pages of her next book. Poster Girl is Book One of the Friends Along the Way Series, and I highly recommend it.

Get it for the kids in your life, you won't regret it. If your child can read, then this is a book for their library; if they are too young to read, then read it to them.

Brilliantly written! Highly recommended!

With her first novel, Anne J. Emerick raises the bar for every other author of children's fiction. Her characters are very real for her target audience, and they suffer the pangs of growing up that adults can well remember, thereby opening the lines of communication about friendship, jealousy, fear of failure, procrastination and more. How wonderful for young readers to discover that other people feel the same way they do -- and that happy endings are possible!

The introduction of scientific information as part of the story was masterfully handled and will stimulate further research and the discovery of new interests!

I anxiously await Anne J. Emerick's next book, and I urge parents and teachers to purchase Poster Girl!

One Cute Read! And A Learning Tool As Well!

In this charming book by author, Anne Emerick, we meet a young girl named Paula. Paula is a free-spirited girl, one who may not always match her hair bobs with her clothes, but that shouldn't matter anyway. She didn't have to be like Cynthia that always looked perfect, and always was the pride of the teachers. The class must prepare a poster for a science project and she is determined hers will be far better than that snotty Cynthia's. After all, why should Cynthia always be number one. No, not this time. Paula decides to do a poster about the changing colors of leaves, surely hers will win. Or will it?

Written in a true style for the age it is presented, young girls will feel comfortable reading this book. They will relate not just to the characters, but to the quest of being recognized for doing a good job on a school project. They will learn, in a fun way, the reason leaves change colors in the Autumn. They will also learn that people are not always the way they may perceive they are, and who we think are our enemies may well be our friends. A wonderful story that I am proud to recommend.

There is a saying in the romance industry that few writers take chances. New writers can't, because they don't have enough "clout," and established writers won't because they don't want to "disappoint reader expectations." Luckily for fans of Anne Stuart, right from the first in her almost 30 years of writing romance, she has flown in the face of both these dictums, having made a career of doing the unexpected. And never more so than in The Right Man.

In fiction, whether popular or literary, one of the greatest gifts a writer can have is a distinctive voice, which becomes the author's trademark and is apparent from work to work. Even more wonderful than this, though, and as rare as rubies, is a writer so talented that she can vary her voice to suit the story. Anne Stuart proves herself to be such an exceptional artist in The Right Man.

I am not a particular fan of film and novelistic noir of the late 1940s and 1950s (and therefore no expert on the subject), but from the little I have watched of that art form, it is highly recognizable. I believe it was a touch of genius for Stuart to fall into this style or "voice" for writing the segments of this time travel set in 1949. The cryptic, highly structured noir style of dialogue, in particular, sets us firmly in the late 1940s, and lends itself to a concise and deliberate pacing that, while moving the book along rapidly (essential in a short book such as this), never seems too rushed. The noir voice as used here is also so highly visual, one can easily imagine the book being made into a film, with the original dialogue carried into a script intact. (Are you listening, Lifetime? )

The use of the wedding dress, which is the major plot device of the "Gowns of White" Harlequin series this book is part of, as a magical device for time travel, while not a wholly new technique in and of itself, is quite original in its execution. My three favorite aspects are these: the way the dress, like an enchanted cape from a fairy tale, never soils or wrinkles; the way the magic brought by the dress spills over into all the other major characters' perceptions, and the way we are never quite sure if the time travel really happens or is a case of mass hypnosis (though this possibility is pleasantly mystical in and of itself).

As wonderful as the magic and the noir voice are, they do not overwhelm that which is the ultimate reason fans read romance: the love relationship. In this book, we get not one, but two great pairs of lovers. The level of sexual tension and expressed passion between each duo is incendiary, and the resolution of the internal and external conflicts, both within the protagonists individually and within the two love relationships, is believable and satisfying.

All in all, this is not only one of the best romance novels I've read in the past few years, but, in my opinion, one of the best short contemporaries I've read in almost 20 years of enjoying this genre.

Thank you Anne Stuart

Leave it to Anne Stuart to twist this plot line around (and around)and make it work. Tackling a bit of time traveling in a shorter book is difficult at best, making it work as spendidly as she did is a rare feat indeed. Brava, Anne!

As another reader mentioned, I only wished it were longer so I could have enjoyed my time in the (multiple )lives of Susan and Jake that much longer. I can't wait to see what she does next!

Santa's Snow Cat is a great Christmas book to share with family and friends. It has become a new family tradition for me to read Santa's Snow Cat to my kids on Christmas Eve. It's a grand mix of fantasy, traditions and truth. The story is set on Christmas Eve and takes place in New York City. Many of the famous places in NY are pictured in the book like The Twin Towers, Empire State Building, St Patrick's Cathedral, and the giant snowflake that hovers above 5th Avenue during Christmas season.
I think everyone will enjoy this book. It's absolutely my favorite book all time.

This book is a must for Christmas, and anyone who loves New York. Snow Cat falls out of Santa's sleigh one Christmas and is dropped into New York. Unhurt she visits different landmarks such as the Twin Towers, Rockefeller Center, and more. Snow Cat meets up with many "look-alike" Santa's, but never hers. Eventually Santa finds Snow Cat and brings her back to the North Pole.

This book is beautifully illustrated, and a must for any cat lovers or anyone looking for a new Christmas story.

This book was about 12 year old Sarah who lives in Puritan New England. Her mother is no longer living and her Father is thinking about marrying a woman Sarah doesn't care for. On the Sabbath, a very strict day in Puritan Society, Sarah walks home with her best friend Elizabeth. But before she walks with her she gets a coat from Elizabeth's brother, because she is cold. So they walk, and Elizabeth slips. But after she realized how fun it was she did it some more and Sarah just had to try. But they were doing something awful. Laughing and playing on Sabbath. The woman Sarah's dad wants to marry hears them and walks over to get a closer look. She reconizes Elizabeth but she mistakens Sarah for Elizabeth's brother (you know, she's wearing his coat). So she runs off and tells everyone. But Sarah feels guilty. She should be the one to blame, not him. Sarah faces moral dilema and tries to do what she knows is right in her heart.

Brings Puritan Massachusetts to life.

Sarah is a twelve-year-old Puritan girl living in Massachusetts in 1651. She is dreadfully unhappy because she fears her widowed father plans to marry a strict woman who dislikes Sarah and considers her to be poorly behaved. Playing on Sundays is strictly forbidden by the Puritan church. But one Sunday after a snow storm, Sarah and her best friend, Elizabeth (whose parents are considered to be somewhat freethinking for Puritans) can't help themselves, and they start to play in the snow, when they notice someone watching them and flee. Later, Mistress Goddard (Sarah's potential future stepmother) comes forward and announces that she saw Elizabeth and her brother Roger (she thought Sarah was Roger because she had borrowed his coat) broke the rules of the Sabbath. Now Roger will be punished when Sarah is the one who broke the rules. Can Sarah find the courage to come forward with the truth? I highly reccomend this excellant, detailed historical novel.

I liked it! Mary Anne's kind, tender heart gets her into trouble, but I admire how she takes responsibility for her mistake and willingly takes the elf job to pay for it! Also touching is how Mary Anne feels so sorry for Angela, the homeless girl, that she cries quietly under her elf head. Her tender heart is endearing; and her strong sense of responsibility is to be commended. It's hilarious how she goes to extremes to hide her secret job from her friends and boyfriend because she's so easily embarrassed!

I found this book really blunt. It is written in a really symplistic way (easy to read). There are some really insightful points, a different way of looking at it...if you will. Honestly, it did make me see "shacking up" in a whole different light. I liked it....but wouldn't give it a five (but then again I'm not doing it) (and wouldn't for sure now) So I guess the book does work after all!

After reading it ( I finished it in 6 hours)the next night when my "friend" came home from work (late as always with an exuse) I told him he was moving out on the weekend. I just have to say one thing. This woman is really brave! It's about time this book was written by a woman who put herself on the line about her choosing to shack up and then to tell the world she was doing it! Nobody wants to look bad in front of others but she doesn't care how she looks, she just wants to help other's from choosing this really painful lifestyle! I couldn't have done it, that's for sure. She totally condems herself for doing it! How many of us would talk about our private lives to the world and risk the ridicule that would come from others? No one that I know of! I sure as heck wouldn't. I could see where some people would take offense to it because she's so straight forward about her opinion but she scolds herself while telling others how bad it is for their well being! How brilliant is that I must add! Anyway, I loved the book, there were so many points that I never even thought of! Read it if your shacking up, it's an eye opener. By the way I would never shack up after reading it!

I came upon this book in a very simple and strange way when a total stranger lent it to me at a time in my life when I was searching for meaning. I have read this beautiful book 4 or 5 times and I get someting new out of it every time. The stength in forgiveness and prayer is mystically simple and yet imperative in our moving forward toward God. I have bought many copies for friends who are equally mystified. I really cannot describe it except to say that it will change the way you look at your life and the lives of all God's creations.

You can't help but connect with this book. It is a primer on spirituality, an owner's manual for anyone with a soul. Read it and then keep it around as a reference book.

Reading this book is a remarkable and worthwhile experience.

From a reveiw by Wm Airth-Kindree, author and publisher/Lyonesse Press: "From these encounters, Anne comes to understand that when we offend another, however insignificant or reprehensible they may seem, we distance ourselves from our source of love and goodness, our God. What we do to or for little ones, we also do for ourselves, and for our Lord and for all of our others. When we visit prison or hospital, we effect the very universe, even as ripples from a thrown stone change all of the dynamics of the pond. Anne's angels proclaim that we are all one and that what we do, whether for good or for evil, influences everything else, and even returns to influence us. The Good News which is so often relegated to dry pages in dusty corners, under Anne's hand once again glows with life, fresh and exciting and above all, convincing."

I believe this book is invaluable to those of us blessed with years of formal religious training, as well as those newly seeking faith. Sometimes religious training has the unfortunate effect of encouraging walls around people, rather than the bridges we need to build. I think God knows we need messengers like Anne Carroll Decker in every age to remind us that we are, above all, eternally connected as a family. If you begin with this book, you will want to be sure to continue with Anne's "Circle of the Soul."

After reading and re-reading Ms. Decker's book with our Women Together Church Group, I can believe that the messages contained in the book could only have come from an angel. Ms. Decker herself came to speak to our group on two occasions. After both events, myself and others in the group came away feeling that we had been part of the encounter! After you read this book, and if you are fortunate enough to meet the author in person, your spiritual life will never be the same. You will learn to listen to the quiet voice of God when it speaks inside of you.

We bought this book for my son at 6 months. By 9 months, he was opening it, and touching the pages. His favorite is the back page where he can feel the spiky bale of straw. At 19 months now, he still enjoys turning the pages. He also has the Touch and Feel Dinosaur book in the same series by DK. If you venture into that one, just be prepared for the stickiness of the T-rex's tongue. I've seen it make several adults jump a bit. :-) All-in-all, these books encourage young children to turn pages and interact with books, and they grow with them too. My son will now sit, point and name what he sees, jabber a/b the contents, and let me read the text to him. We liked this tractor book enough for our son that we bought 2 additional copies to give as gifts to friends.

This was a 2nd birthday gift, and my son really enjoys reading it -- he comes running and quiets right down anytime I ask him if he wants to read it. Good tractor pictures and some animal sounds -- a fun book.

He loves his tractors....

The little one had a copy of the tractor board book, but it was smaller and falling apart. I ordered him this one and he loves it even more than the first one. There are pictures of animals and a farmer along with the pictures of tractors. It's great for any little one who loves tractors and animals.

I've been a faithful user of the Lewis & Doorlag book since its first edition. Each subsequent revision has added substance and useful information that makes buying it worthwhile. Of all the introductory texts on special education, this one is the most concise, reader-friendly, practical and up-to-date. It has invaluable teaching strategies and resources to inform the practice of special educators and diagnosticians. The only downside that is consistent across all editions is the unevenness of its content. In virtually every chapter about a given exceptionality, say mental retardation, more emphasis is placed on nature of the disability and teaching strategies than on its causes. Therefore, when using this book as a teaching tool in college, it has to be supplemented with other resources that do more justice to the etiology of each special need.

A must have for anyone who interacts with children!

I originally purchased this book for an education courss. This book offered insight on the inclusion of Special students in a general education class. It offers insights on how to best teach students with various needs including learning disabilites, physical disabilties, and other disabilties. As a teacher it taught me what my resources are. I learned the benefits of inclusion and the positive results that special students need. If you are taking this class they also offer outlines for every chapter at the cwx.prenhall.website as well as testing resources. This edition is almost exactly the same as the 6th.

Informative and Easy-to-Read

I am a contract instructor who uses this book for an undergraduate level "Exceptional Children in the Classroom" class. I chose this text because it is practical and not as dry as Heward, another widely respected author of special education texts. Many strategies are provided for meeting the needs of students with disabilities as well as gifted students, those who are at risk, and those who are linguistically and culturally diverse.
