This book sits in my powder room and not only do I still pick it up and get a giggle now and then, but my guests always emerge from the loo with a smile, too!

I got this book for my mother, along with the other one recommended by Amazon to buy together, and it's very funny. I was looking for something that would give her a lift and it definitely did; she enjoys them quite a bit.

The book I Remember the Alamo, by D. Anne Love is a breath taking book that shows what it was like to have lived during the Mexican and Texas war. People in this book go through horrible and great times that make you notice how much you have in life that you take for granted. This book has made me think of how hard it would be to be put in such a situation like some characters are put in, in this book. They have to go through such hard times, that it will change their life completely forever. Reading this book has changed my veiw on what happens in war. This book is truely one of the best books i have ever read. It made me think of what it was like to live back in the time of war, and being a girl who had to go inside the Alamo, and leave everything she had back at home. I Remember the Alamo experiences themes of family, love, friendship, and sadness all at the same time. You will never want to put this book down until you're down!

I am a 4th grade teacher in Texas. I teach Texas history and we have always complained there were no Historical Fiction books we could use in our classrooms to support our Social Studies Curriculum.
That has all changed now! This book moved me to tears several times. It describes the essentials of Texas History in relation to the Alamo, Texas Revolution, and The Runaway Scrape. The story brings a very personal twist to living in Texas during the time of the Revolution as well as a very moving look at friendship and how they can support you through times that are utterly devestating. I recommend this book to everyone!
I love this book!

I read I Remember The Alamo by D. Anne Love. This book was about an eleven year old girl named Jessie. In the beginning of the book, Jessie's dad announces that he wants to move to Texas. The next day, they are on their way. When her family arrives, Jessie becomes friends with a Mexican girl named Angelina. However, they have to meet secretly due to the war between the Mexicans and Texians that is about to begin. One day,Jessie's father and old brother announce they are going to fight for Texas. While gone, the rest of the family hides in the safe Alamo. Suddenly, the family gets some shocking news, however, Angelina knows the truth! What happens next? I won't tell, you'll just have to read it.

I liked how the book was very exciting and really grabbed me into it. Especially towards the end of the story. I recomend this book to people who like to laugh, and yet learn. D. Anne Love definitly knows how to write great childrens books.

This book taught me a lot about friendship. It shows that no matter who you are, you can have a friend from a different culture. After all, the hand of friendship has no color. This book also shows that war doesn't solve problems. When you think about it today, you know it was wrong because a bunch of people from different races live in Texas. I would consider this book my favorite, not only because it is great, but how it has a moral too!

Anne Compton is a 24-year-old paralegal living in Chicago when she purchases a book with a mysterious inscription by a woman with the same name. Anne is compelled to discover the story behind the sad words and unwittingly unearths a decades old murder, power gone awry, and a tragic story of broken hearts. A personal journal from the past leads Anne to the still very much alive and malevolent killer. As Anne's quest to uncover hidden truths consumers her life, she finds that she is facing decisions and dangers she is only beginning to comprehend. I'm Sorry...Love Anne documents Andrea Peters as a writer of considerable imagination, originality, and story-telling skill. I'm Sorry...Love Anne is a thoroughly entertaining read from first page to last. Also very highly recommended reading for the mystery fan is Andrea Peters thriller, Four Crows (0975893327, $14.99).

This book is an easy read and contains lots of practical suggestions. I particularly like the way it is organized, making it easy to refer back to important points when you need them. Prior to a meeting, parents can use the checklists provided to make sure they have all the information they need to be fully prepared. It's an ideal resource for parents whose children are just beginning public school as well as for more experienced parents who are looking for new ideas. As a preschool teacher, I have already added it to my school library.

Ethereal beauty

Review Date: 2008-04-18
These photos create a unique sense for which I have no good words. The cover image gives an example: Stiffly posed, but without real tension, pale and luminous, and somehow beyond reach of human touch. Many of Tenneson's figures are swathed in flows of gauze or something just a little heavier. Only a few photos feature the clean-shorn model that appears on the front, but I find them appealing in that extra degree of nudity and truth to the body itself.

Several of these photos capture ranges of the human spectrum that others often ignore: a male model with whitened beard and sagging skin, a heavy-set woman with rolling curves, wide-eyed children in chaste and formal poses. The most remarkable among these remarkable photos might be a sequence of four, showing the same woman and child. The first three show the burgeoning pregnancy with the child inside, the last shows the newborn infant, held close against the belly that contained her just one photo ago. I understand least the images in which a seminude model is carefully capped, her body exposed and her hair hidden - or, more baffling still, only partly hidden. Understanding is over-rated, though, and not necessary for many kinds of appreciation. Whether I understand or not, I appreciate this memorable collection.

Surreal, beautiful photographs.

Review Date: 2005-01-17
Most of the photos in this collection have been shot in a form of lighting that causes a slight, white blurring of the image. It causes the image to have a surreal effect, and it is dramatic. Looking at the images causes an impression at two different levels. At the general level, you are seeing an image as if you are looking through a very thin white sheet. Underneath that, there are very subtle messages in the photos. On one page, there are photos of a nude woman at three points of her pregnancy and one after birth, with the newborn baby at her breast. The message here is obvious, but most of the rest are far subtler.
Most of the pictures are of a human form, and while there is some emotion on their faces, it is very low key and subject to interpretation. In looking at the same photo, you can see sadness, low-key joy and perhaps a hint of boredom. I looked through the book several times, scanning the photos, studying them sector by sector, finding new interpretations each time I delved deeper into the image.
Tenneson is an excellent photographer, her hazy white light technique of shooting adds a quality to the photos that gives them a spooky quality. However, they are also beautiful.

Stunning!!!

From the haunted old woman to the progression of the pregnant girl to the androgynous figures, every image in this book carries a power that reminds me of the cinematic.

What a wonderful book! There is a story in there which will touch any woman (or man) from any background in so many ways. I am of an age where I was touched in particular by two themes - aging/dying parents and menapause. Joan Halperns story of her mother's battle with cancer, was my mother's story ten years ago. Joan Isom was talking about her mother, but my grandmother will be 100 this year, and I know the feeling of not wanting to leave her to the night. And I definitely related to Tricia Lande's "menapausal madness", but I am waiting impatiently for Elayne Clift's "postmenapausal zest"! This book is a treasure!

I gave The Leap Years at Christmas to several friends and relatives. One wrote me that she took her copy to the edge of the Grand Canyon on the eve of the millennium and sat in the snow as she read, her feet dangling over the edge. Another friend took her copy to the gym, sat on an exercise bike, tears rolling down her face, as she read "On Loving Ethan." Hope, pain, risk, loss, transition, and love are a few of the themes embraced in this collection of nonfiction by thirty women of all ages and cultures. "Running Woman" and "Toast" made me shout with laughter while "The Night Ahead" brought quiet tears of empathy for the author and her mother. After reading this book I am even more respectful of women's resilience when confronted with change, loss, and love.

This book is about a diner cook who loves to eat healthy food and we find out what happens to that food in this well written and illustrated book by Paul Showers and Edward Miller. There are little experiments and up close photos of digestive organs which can delightfully gross out your child while one reads and learns about this important system of the body.

My 4 year old daughter wants to be a doctor when she grows up so I am always on the look out for books about the body. I love all of the "Let's-Read-And-Find-Out Science" books and they have several very good books available regarding how the body works.

These letters are the life and thoughts of an honest-to-God human female--a real woman, not a trumped-up tricked-out product of society. She is inspiring, honest, real, and as wild and natural as Africa itself was during her time. Every woman who has truly lived, even a little, will see herself in these pages. I reread it every few years as a pep-talk for courageous living, humility, and honesty. I will forever feel sad that she had to leave Africa.

I actually had several of Isak Dinesen's works - "Out of Africa," her seven tales, and her book of letters. I hadn't seen the movie and I honestly wasn't even that interested in Africa or Danish people. But I'm fascinated by women's letters, and that is why I bought this book. I have read these letters and nothing else by her, to be quite honest, and these letters have inspired me to read more of her writings (once I stop finding other women's letters in book form to read).

I share all of the other reviewers' observations and feelings toward this book, so I won't repeat them. One thing I will add is that it is truly fascinating to read passages of her letters that have to deal with hunting game ... I don't know much about Africa or its colonizations, but if I recall, the colonizing didn't start until late in the 19th century - when "game" was more than plentiful. Even with this in mind, I couldn't help but be appalled when she recited the numbers of animals that were killed simply for sport. This bias aside, these letters made it easy to see how animals became endangered and extinct.

Obviously, there is more to the letters than hunting - otherwise I never would have read the entire book. Karen Blixen was obviously a very determined, passionate woman and this came through in her letters. Her voice and her descriptions of her life in Africa made these letters worth reading to someone who previously had no interest in the colonization of Africa.

"... huge distant blue mountains and the vast grassy plains before them covered with zebra and gazelle, and at night I can hear lions roaring like the thunder of guns in the darkness". Passages such as this one make it worthwhile to read this book. Karen Blixen is a master at poetically describing her foreign surroundings. If you enjoy the movie and the book Out of Africa then you will enjoy reading this book. Although at times the letters are repetitious and the author tends to ramble on, it is still an interesting book as it allows the reader to look through a window into Colonial East Africa from 1914 to 1931. The reader is able to go into Karen Blixen's mind and follow her daily struggles, joys and sorrows during her long stay in Africa and through her many safaris. This book unlike Out of Africa is not written through rose colored lenses. As you read this book, you feel a much harsher Africa. Also in this book she writes about her lover Dennis Finch-Hatton and doesn't hide the fact that she's crazy about him from her family. I highly recommend this book to any fan of Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen.

There's no better way of getting to know the real Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen than by reading her Letters. Blixen shares her life with you a letter at a time, and in such rich detail that one feels a bit inclined to purchase a ticket to Kenya and appear on her veranda for tea!

Blixen's deep love for "her people" finally comes out in its truest sense in that she considered the African natives her soul mates.

The letters to Ingeborg, Aunt Bess, and brother Tommy, reveal (to me at least) that Blixen felt a greater kinship and sense of mutual acceptance with her "black skinned brother" than she did with her Danish relatives.

"Letters From Africa" is essential reading for any Dinesen fan.

Better than Out of Africa

Isak Dineson, or Karen Blixen, was a fascinating woman. Most people know her as the main character from the movie Out of Africa or as the auther of the book of the same name. While the movie and the book are both good, I feel that this collection of her letters gives the best picture of who she was and what was important to her. The struggles of trying to make a go of her farm are heartwrenching, but the joy she expresses in her surroundings is enchanting. She describes the people in her life, especially the Kenyans who worked on her farm, so well that you feel you know them almost as well as you know her. Her description of the Europeans who lived in Kenya for economic or political reasons has enough of compliment and criticism to seem much more fair than many books from the colonial era. By the end of the book, it is easy to think of Karen as a friend.

This four volume set is an absolute must read for all Christians. The information in these four books is so amazing that you will not put them down. These books answer all critics of the bible who say that the information in it is not reliable. Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich gives a detailed account of the ministry of Christ with a tremendous amount of information not given in the New Testament. Among the things that she reveals is Christ's journey to Cypress and his preaching the Gospel to Jews and Pagans there. When reading these four volumes you feel like you are watching a video of Christ's life with so much detailed information about people and places not mentioned in the New Testament. A detailed history of Salvation is given from the time of Adam to Mary's death. An absolute must have for your library.

I read these books 45 years ago but gave them away when we moved to another location. After finding out that "The Passion of Christ" movie was based on Catherine Emerich's cloistered life of visionary expierience, I wanted to read them again. As they had been out of print 45 years ago - I didn't expect to find them now - but God bless Amazon.Com for having them available. The details contained in the Life of Jesus Christ revealed in these documents are awe inspiring and deeply revealing to the true nature of Christ and His Mission. This knowledge balances out that of an anti-christ philosophy that one finds prevelant in today's society. I recommend them highly!

This book is simply great! It fills in a lot of gaps in the Bible accounts of the prophets and Jesus. The energy expended by Jesus and John the Baptist in their ministries is captured in full colour with details of places, the customs of different peoples, in rich description, which makes it all the more convincing since the visionary had never known to have been at those places or known these sitting in Germany! At the same time there is no indication of someone else of more sophisticated knowledge having written these things as her simplicity shines through at times that only serve to authenticate the book. I was particularly touched by the accounts of John the Baptist and came across with a feeling of awe for the tremendous workaholic (if you can call it that) spirit of our own Lord who never seemed to tire of doing His work. A book that will definitely deepen your faith and give wonderful and beautiful details not found anywhere else. When I first started, I found the initial accounts between creation and Abraham a little hard to believe but found that the author actually cross references the same later on in the next three books, in another period as actually influencing pagan beliefs. But the rest is such easy reading especially when trying to understand the gaps in the four Gospels. I also found the reason that the visonary "sees" for God allowing creation to continue uptil the present time from the fall of the angels very convincing. An excellent set of books worth every penny, absolutely worth reading over and over to understand the contributions of the holy men of old.

I read this book set 15 years ago, when it was in a smaller print. I was half way through when I resolved to mark the most interesting things the next time I read them (highly recommended). These books are some of the most unique reading that I have ever done. The books start with creation and the fall of man, and end with redemption, but with details that are nowhere else available. The names and relationships of many, many people are given, along with customs, dress, landscapes, colors, smells, temperatures, and many other details that are available only to one who was actually present at the time. Many times, the current state of things are compared to what they were 1900 years prior. The biggest impact of reading these books is the realization of the incredible energy that Jesus expended in teaching, exorcising devils, and curing all sorts of diseases of both body and soul; and how His enemies, the Pharisees, chose to kill Him, rather than lose their cushy, powerful and prestigious positions. The Biblical revelations are nothing short of incredible. The most interesting Biblical revelation for me is the detailed description of the contents of the Ark of the Covenant, and how one item from the Ark was used at the conception of Mary.

Jesus told Anne Catherine Emmerich that she is the greatest visionary to ever walk the planet, but this did not effect her humility. She is a very holy nun who gives us a new perspective on Jesus and fills in the information the bible leaves out. For instance, the sinner who Anoints Jesus with costly perfume is Mary Magdelan, and she is the sister of Martha and Lazarous. Buy the books they are worth every penny. I am living in Germany and paid the international shipping. My order got messed up and I only received the second book. It took me a week to read it. Amazons customer service was great, they reordered the four volume set and paid the shipping, the next time I only received the first book, finally they reimbursed me and told me I could keep the two books. Hopefully they have fixed the problem by now. I am waiting for a reseller to sell the 3rd and 4th books singularly. If this doesn't happen, I plan on reordering the entire set.

Fleur Stanhope is an Australian woman and a cancer survivor. She travels to England, home of her ancestors, to open a shop for the summer. This is to be her last adventure before returning home in Australia and settling down. There she meets Patrick Donnelly. The attraction is mutual and immediate.
Before I read this novel, I wondered what was the big deal? One or the other would have to give in if they wanted to remain a couple. Having read this author's other works, I figured the story would engage me, and it did.
Anne Whitfield's talent is evident as she tells her tale, and convinces you that although Fleur and Patrick share a deep love for the other, there is no way they can remain together. Long distance doesn't cut it. Neither can make the sacrifice of leaving their family and moving to the other side of the world, and be happy. Or can they?
I loved this story. The characters ring true, and you root for them to get together and remain together. Another plus, the author writes so well about Australia and England, you'd think you've been there while reading the story. I highly recommend Long Distance Love.

Much to her parents chagrin, Fleur Stanthorpe is once again off gallivanting half way around the world. This time she's swapped her homeland Australia for Whitby, England. Fleur's rented out a shop in the quaint, historical town for the summer and intends to run a bookstore café. A promise she made to herself during her battle with breast cancer. A sort of last hurrah before finally settling down in Australia, with hopes of marriage and possibly a family.

What she never expected was for tall, dark and delicious Irishman Patrick Donnely to step into her life in England. Though the man is sex on legs and a nice guy to boot, they both know anything between them would have to end along with summer. His successful posh restaurant is in England...her life and future in Australia. However their emotions and intense attraction for one another cannot be denied. But come September, will they be able to fool their hearts into believing they were only meant for a short summer tryst? Or can a love between two souls be strong enough to survive any distance put between them?

Ms Whitfield has written a beautiful and emotional short story that captures the fumbling insecurity of two people falling in love. I laughed out loud more than once. The main characters come alive on the page and seem real enough to phone for a chat. I fell a little in love with Patrick myself and rooted for this couple to find happiness. I highly recommend this read and cannot wait to read more from this talented new author. Well done Ms. Whitfield.

Anne Whitfield's novel Long Distance Love is a heartwarming read for modern woman faced with today's problems. Cancer survivor Fleur fulfils her ambition to visit her roots in England before she settles down in her beloved Australia. While she hopes for a little adventure when she opens a bookshop, she hardly expects to find the love of her life, the owner of a trendy restaurant, two doors down. When family matters call her home, how can their fleeting moments of happiness survive the thousands of miles between them?
Whitfield draws her characters with a light and loving hand and pulls us into a world that spans the oceans and touches our hearts.

Free-spirited Fleur wants one last adventure, while the devastatingly handsome Patrick needs to learn to fly. Together, they build a passion for love and life. Anne Whitfield made me care about the characters (and drool over Patrick) from the very first page to the last. She is a writer to watch and I'm anxiously looking forward to her next book!

Fleur Stanthorpe is a native Australian. Having survived a brush with cancer, she's indulging in one last adventure before returning home and settling down. Her idea of the perfect venture is setting up a small shop for the summer in England so that she could experience life as her ancestors once lived. Falling in love wasn't part of the plan.

Patrick Donnelly is the owner of the classiest restaurant in Whitby. Originally from Ireland, he moved to England after his divorce. He'd once dreamed of opening a chain or restaurants, but given up on that ambition when his ex-wife demanded half of his business in the divorce settlement.

Fleur's traveled to many destinations all over the world, her family should be used to her wanderlust. Her entire family had all been very supportive of her during her two year-long fight against cancer. None of them understand Fleur's need to travel to England and set up a bookshop/café, but they support her in this endeavor. Once Fleur's arrived at the building she leased through the internet, she's faced with a lot of cleaning, redecorating, buying furnishings, as well as stocking the shelves. All daunting prospects, but she looks forward to the challenge. Before she's even finished moving her stuff into the flat above the shop, a sinfully sexy man introduces himself as Patrick, the owner of a restaurant just up the hill. Fleur hasn't been this attracted to a man in a very long time, but she isn't looking for a summer romance. Patrick isn't looking for romance either. He's considered the area's most eligible bachelor, but he's drawn to Fleur and has no intention of resisting the allure. Fleur says she's only in England for the summer, would a summertime fling be enough to satisfy Patrick's craving for Fleur? Will Fleur really be able to leave the man of her dreams in England and return to Australia at the end of summer?

Anne Whitfield's LONG DISTANCE LOVE is a very sweet romance that is truly a pleasure to read. Patrick and Fleur make a perfect couple. I loved watching their relationship develop. They both know that Fleur will be returning to Australia once the summer's over but that doesn't stop them from indulging in their mutual desire for each other or the heartache that comes from knowing that their time together is limited. You also meet single mom, Rachel, early in the story. She befriends Fleur and is soon helping her in the shop. She's a charmingly upbeat character and everything one could hope for in a friend. I love that Ms. Whitfield uses the local dialect throughout the story, it adds to the authenticity of the tale and gives it an old world feel. This is the perfect feel good story and I'd definitely recommend it.
